286.0. "Favorite Female Vocalist- Cast Your Vote" by USCTR2::DONOVAN (cutsie phrase or words of wisdom) Mon Aug 13 1990 06:10

Who is your alltime favorite female vocalist and/or musician and/or
    songwriter type person?

    I'll go first:

Anita Baker---I just bought her Rapture cassette. This is by far one
of the best recordings I have ever heard in my life.

Sheena Easton--Wow, can she hit those high notes.

Sarah Vaughn--By far one of the greats. She will be sorely missed as
she passed away earlier this year.

Bette Midler--She sings from the heart.

Alberta Hunter--I heard her on a special which cronicled her life. She
sang the blues at age 92 like no youngster ever could.

    G'Day,

Depends on the mood. If I want nice relaxing female music then
Barbara Streisand is the way to go. If I want something with a little
more blast then it's pretty hard to beat Tina Turner.

    David.

Linda Ronstadt - who can sing *anything* and make it work

Janis Joplin - "Down on Me" is still one of the hottest tunes ever

Melissa Etheridge - my first impression was 'the next Springsteen'.
(Yah, I know, weird.) So much energy, so much
                        lyrical genius.

Does anyone know the name of a new Brazilian singer who recently performed
in Cambridge? I heard her on the radio but didn't get her name. I think
both her first and last names begin with M. Sort of a combination of
folk and rock music I think.

Barbra Streisand - one of my favorite albums is the one of
    				all the Broadway musicals.
Ann Wilson - such a powerful voice.
Alannah Myles - not one song on her album that I don't like.
    			Beautiful, strong voice..the raspy kind.
Madonna - not as a person but I do like her voice.
Gloria Estafan - love her voice, her versatility in her music
and her strength for fighting so hard
to come back from her accident.
Cher - again not as a person but her voice.

	- Barbra Streisand (don't like the SONGS she sings, but that's a VOICE)

honorable mention:

	- Paulette Carlson (of Highway 101)

A second on Etta James, torchy blues, Seven Year Itch is a *grand*
album. All the songs are great.

Billie Holiday, what can I say? Her voice is liquid velvet. "Strange
Fruit" is a haunting and terrifying song. She goes from light and easy
to deadly serious in the range of what she could sing.

Joan Biaz (sp?) her songs led a generation to protest injustice.

Grace Slick, she lead us through the acid nights. Feed your head.

Koko Taylor, "I'd Rather Go Blind". Another great blues voice.

Plus many of the others already mentioned. liesl

Joan Baez! --- a definite favorite of mine

plus just about everyone that you all mentioned.

    I'd also add:

    Meg Christian

    Holly Near

Judy Collins (if no one else mentioned her)

I'll stop there, but I'm sure I'll think of more as soon as I get in
my car and turn on the stereo. There are lots of singers whose voices
I like, but who really knock my socks off with one or two of their
songs. Like, Sandy Denny with "Who knows where the time goes"
or Faith Nolan with her cover of "Shake Sugaree."

Lea Salonga, who currently plays the lead in MISS SAIGON.
I thought she was in fine voice on the Original Cast album,
but to hear her live was is virtually indescribable. Such
    passion in her singing!

Mike Oldfield has featured a number of female backup vocalists on
his albums. I don't know if she's on FIVE MILES OUT, but the one
he's featured most often, I believe, is his sister Sally. She's
an equally talented musician, who has a number of her own albums.
Unfortunately, she never hit it big in the US, and only her first
album was ever released here. She seems to be big in Germany,
however, and a little less so in the UK, and I've got about a dozen
UK or German import CD's of hers. She and brother Mike also put out
an album together in the late 60's under the name "Sallyangie".

Thanks. I had forgotten that his sister Sally worked with him too.
I don't think she was the one on Five Miles Out though. Maybe. I've
only seen three MO albums here in the States. I was shocked (and
completely thrilled) when I was CD shopping in Germany and found
over 15 of his albums I never knew existed, on sale. Woof! My charge

This is really pulling things out of the back of my mind, but I think
they're a couple of women who put out an album of all cover tunes and
one original, with the original called "I Spent my Last 10 Dollars on
Beer and Condoms" or something similar. Music was definitely guitar
based, although I can't remember whether it was more folk or rock
    oriented.

The "Beer and Condoms" song was mildly popular at WMBR, but then again
I might have the wrong band.

I have a 2 Nice Girls tape - I like it.

The quote previously mentioned is "I spent my last ten dollars on birth
control and beer/life was much easier when I was sober and queer." The
quote alone is worth the price of the tape. :-)

2 Nice Girls also won some award or other recently from some group or other
along the lines of Gay and Lesbian Anti-defamation League. aren't you glad
you asked? :-)

I'll second D!'s opinion of Two Nice Girls album, 2 Nice Girls. I like
it! Nice vocals and lyrics. I don't know who to compare them to.
They're in a class by themselves.

At one time I thought I'd type in the lyrics to "I Spent My Last $10"
    but then...nah!

_i spent my last $10_ starts like this...imagine a twangy hurtin' song
    in 3/4 time...

when i was a young girl like normal girls do
i looked to a woman's love to help get me through
i never needed any more than a feminine touch
i hated the thought of kissing a man
    	it really was too much

i did not drink; i did not smoke
i did not say `god damn'
i was polite; i was sensitive
    	before i loved a man
my family were proud of me
    	proud of what i am
    	and then along came lester
and my tale of woe began...

they have an album (_2 nice girls_, mostly originals), and an ep (_like a
version_, mostly covers). the high point of _like a version_ is their
astonishing version of _i feel love_...

    enjoy!
