i personally am not a member of the NRA, and sometimes
get angry at that group, but the way that he described
it as a sporting association, i can't stay mad at it.

NRA does not equal allowing people to walk in off the
street to buy guns, it does mean people getting together
    to share a hobby.

now as for the political activists who get together and
try to make purchasing guns too easy.....but they are
not the NRA. maybe a fraction of it, but they are not it.

For reminding us that the real problem is not how to define legally how
you can insult another group using "artistic expression," but the
social aspects of WHY SOMEONE WOULD WRITE, PERFORM, PRODUCE, ETC.,
MUSIC/ART THAT PROMOTES HATRED OF ANOTHER GROUP IN SOCIETY IN THE FIRST
PLACE, and why that hate-mongering gets popular support...

And for urging us to DO something about it!!!

Jody's note was short, sweet, and to the point. Maybe some people can't
deal with the "take your marbles and go home" theory, but the fact is,
its d***ed effective. And considering the frequently underlying

I like to nominate a Special Award to the person who first
suggested in V1 or V2 that there be a Hall of Fame topic.
In my desperate attempt to catch up from a two-week vacation
(and having ~2000 unseen notes), I'm skipping more notes
than usual -- I mean, there were over 200 unread replies in
the Processing Topic alone! -- and because of this topic,
I've seen some fine notes that I would otherwise have missed
(especially the aforementioned cry of anguish from Lee).

The entire FWO B/G/L string. Although I won't participate in the note,
respecting the FWO limitation request, and happy to do so, I am
learning so very much about people whose orientation is the same as
mine, but whose gender is the opposite. It is so difficult, sometimes,
to avoid sterotyping, as most of the people I know that are out about
their same-sex orientation (Female and Male) seem to fit some of the
sterotypes. They are people, human beings, deserving of my respect and
everone's respect. This NOTE, # 47 and all replies, is really helping
me by giving me more insight into the participants in this file and how
they live their personal lifstyles and the reasons for it. Bravo to all

I think that one of the keys to dealing with sexist/racist/homophobic
feelings is to learn to deal with people as human beings first, then
    green/blue/red/black/brown/white second.

That seems to be a very dividing point in this conference and one of
the reasons that so many persons respond so negatively to some notes.
Say you have a gay Asian supermarket bagger. There are those who don't
want to go down his aisle because they look at that person and all they
see is GAY or ASIAN and they know they don't like GAY or ASIAN. There
are others who see SUPERMARKET BAGGER and will go down that aisle, and
as long as the SUPERMARKET BAGGER packs the groceries in a satisfactory
manner they won't care whether SUPERMARKET BAGGER happens to also be
GAY and ASIAN. The person did the job that was required in the
    situation.

You said what I've felt better than I could manage to express it.
And I think you've described a significant source of the
misunderstanding that occurs in this file. So many of us are
very sensitive to the topics we discuss here, and want this to be
a place where we can discuss these issues openly. When the
issues are discussed impersonallly, it can really sting.
I thought your note expressed this well, but also with
sensitivity to those who may not be aware of this difference in
approach to the topics, and the problems it engenders.

Thank you, Justine. I know you spoke for me; I think you also spoke
