    G'Day,

Although I have said in the past that the chances of me visiting
the states is pretty remote, it may now be somewhat more of a reality!
A number of shops in Sydney at the moment have a VERY good promotion in
that if you spend over $1000 on anything they will GIVE you two return
tickets to the USA to be used within the next 12 months. There is of
course one catch :-(. That is that you have to spend at least 14
nights in a Hyatt hotel at your own expense. These range from
A$160-350 per night. If we go for the cheapest we will be up for about
A$2500 which considering the normal return air fare is about A$1500
each without any accomodation is pretty good.

We are building a house at the moment so spare cash is
non-existent, except for the $1000 for the dishwasher that will get our
free tickets, but I'm pretty sure that in the latter part of the year
we may be able to find some and come and visit some of you folks and
Disneyland and all the other 'touristy' places. We can stay for up to
45 days and as long as the minimum 14 are spent with Hyatt we can stay
whereever we like for the rest of the time.

Will definately let you all know if/when we will make an appearance
on your distant shores! Looks like it's time to start studying the
maps to see where all these places are .....

    David.

As a moderator, I would also like to say farewell, and ask you to
promise to play nicely together. Will you do that for me? Why
are you smiling like that and shaking your heads? *sigh* Well,
will you promise to only bonk each other over the head *once* per
altercation? No? Look, come sit here, and I'll explain something:
You can't teach anyone anything by beating them over the head in
a notefile, any more than you can teach anyone anything by running
them through in the real world. Trust me.

Will you at least promise to think twice before that *second*

Well, okay, I guess that's the best I can expect.

    Ahem...Your attention please!

My 19 year old daughter, Jennifer, will be in Denver for two weeks
beginning this Sunday, September 16th. She will be in training
classes during the day, but will have her evenings free. If any
noters in Denver have daughters or sons in the 19+ year old age bracket,
Jennifer would love to have some company to spend time with. She
will have her own rental car, food expenses paid, and will be staying
at the Marriott Courtyard, but she will not have much spending money.

Jennifer enjoys dancing, good conversation, bicycling, aerobics
and body building. She is very intelligent and has an excellent
sense of humor. (She is also *very* attractive.) If any FRIENDS
want to show her around, I would appreciate it!

Please write me at SLOVAX::HASLAM or HENRYY::HASLAM_BA to let me
know if you or your daughter or son may want to meet Jennifer, so
I can keep her informed as to who may be calling.

15.48A visiter from Oz (maybe) .....LRCSNL::WALESDavid from Down-underThu Jun 27 1991 03:3622
    G'Day,

My wife told me last night that she wants to go to the US in late
August. Why couldn't she choose late June so I could have come to the
    party!

Anyway, we have relatives on the west coast with whom we will be
staying for about 2-3 weeks. I would like to meet any =wn= people
around the San Francisco area while we are there. I think I have also
convinced her that we really have to go the east coast so I can meet
a lot more of the =wn= crowd. What I need to know is what is a flight
from S.F. to Boston likely to cost? Also what about accomodation? We
would probably only be in Boston for a day or two so we aren't likely
to qualify for any extended stay rate reductions.

We are going to see the travel agent tonight and then we will know
if we can really afford the trip or not. At least I will have a couple
of months to organise a gathering of the =wn= clan if we do make it
    over there.

David, a plane ticket between the east and west coast currently goes
for about $350. Don't worry about a place to stay - I'm *quite* sure
someone in the community will offer you a bed for the night. Maybe
even me! (Unfortunately, I can't now, because I don't know if I'll even
be living in the same apartment in August.) And if worse comes to
worse, you can get a hotel in the area for $40-50 a night.

    Can't wait to meet you!

15.51A place to stay in NHSMURF::CALIPH::binderSimplicitas gratia simplicitatisThu Jun 27 1991 15:2015
David,

Consider this an official offer of a room if you make it to New England.
I can provide a nice quiet morning-sun room with twin beds in an 1846
house (somewhat modified...) that is occupied by us, our three Siamese
cats, and our seven goldfish. In the woods around us live woodchucks
(marmots), skunks, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, and the occasional
rabbit - and lots of birds. The food is passable fair.

Nashua is about 35 highway miles from Maynard and is therefore close
enough that a party would make sense for gathering up a fair number
of us to meet you. It's also only abouot 45 miles from Boston should
you care to play tourist in the Hub.

15.53Can we afford it - I hope so!LRCSNL::WALESDavid from Down-underThu Jun 27 1991 21:2117
    G'Day,

Thanks for the offers of accomodation! We went to the travel agent
last night and worked out that the trip is going to cost us about $1000
more than we first realised. We have to decide now if we can afford
this extra or not. We don't have long to make up our minds as the
fares have to be paid about 6 weeks in advance.

This should really go in the 'I hate' notes but it is relevent to
this. I hate all the stupid rules that the airlines put on cheap
fares. At the moment there is an A$1050 return fare to the US but you
can only stay for a maximum of 21 days. We want to stay for 4 weeks so
the airfare rises to A$1399! $350 more for what??? We're still using
    two seats on the plane.

    David.

15.54WE'RE COMING!!!LRCSNL::WALESDavid from Down-underSun Jun 30 1991 10:5034
    G'Day,

We've booked the trip! We leave Australia on August 14th so we
will arrive in San Francisco about the same time we leave (shame it
will take us two days to get home). So far we have only booked the
main air ticket as we haven't finalised the rest of the itinery. We
think we'll stay for about 3 weeks on the west doing Disneyland, Las
Vegas, Grand Canyon and any other touristy things we can find. Then
well head east to see all (most) of the =wn= crowd!

Now it's question time. What else is there to see in and around
Boston? It took some convincing on my part to get my wife to pay about
$700 to go to the east coast just to meet a bunch of 'computer people'
but I told her there was lots of other things to see too :-).
Basically what I'd like to do is maybe arrive on thursday or friday.
Visit head office and take a look around have lunch etc (is that
possible???). Then if one of our great party organisers could get a
few people together on say friday or saturday night that would be
great! Even if this isn't a huge =wn= party I still want a =wn= name
tag from Maggie! I hope somebody can arrange that.

As far as accomodation is concerned, what I might do is let the people
who have offered to put us up figure out would be the best to do it.
This is because you know where you are in relation to each other and
head office and any likely venue for a party. When I know for sure
when we are coming (in the next week or so) I'll let you know and we
can sort something out. The amount of organising this trip is taking
is amazing. I'll need the holiday to get over it!

So today is June 30. We leave on August 14. Carla, how many days to
    go???

Boston: There's the Museum of Fine Arts, The Institute of Contemporary
Arts, Harvard Square, the Common and Garden (and you must take a ride
on the swan boats). There's Newbury Street for shopping/browsing, people
watching, with the Ritz Hotel at one end and Tower Records at the other.
I agree with the suggestion that you take a day trip to Sturbridge
Village. You should also go see a Shaker Village, maybe the one in
New Hampshire. Go to the top of the Hancock Building. Visit Faneuil Hall
(More shopping opportunities) and the North End which feels a lot like
being in Europe. Take a ride on a boat that tours the Boston Harbour.
Visit the Concord Museum and the deCordova in neighboring Concord and
Lincoln. Attend a contra dance (beginners always invited). Go to the
Computer Museum and Children's Museum. Eat dinner on the waterfront.

I second the last few recommendations - even Sturbridge Village (Living
History Centre?) and Newbury Street (have a "crunchies" breakfast at
the Harvard Bookstore Cafe), and try and have a meal at a Publick House
    (The Wayside Inn, for example).

How long will you be on the West Coast, and where? (I should be
charging admission for viewing what an earthquake can do...and how long
it takes to fix it - we live in Loma Prieta).

I'll put my two cents in. You might consider:

The Higgins Armory Museum - largest arms and armor museum in the
western hemisphere (swords, helmets, suits of chainmail
etc.). Located in Worcester, 35 miles west of Boston.

Old Mystic Seaport - Whaling museum with one of the last remaining
wooden whaling vessels. Lots of buildings and exhibits to
explore. Sail and steamboat rides on the Mystic River.
Located in Mystic Connecticut. (Sort of a nautical
    		Sturbridge village).

The Castle Restaurant - Located on the shores of a lake in
Leicester, Massachusetts. One of the finest restuarants
in the U.S. Expensive, but worth it.

Hope this gives you some ideas. Enjoy your visit.

    Have a GREAT day!

    A few more -

Quabbin Reservoir, the largest artificial drinking-water reservoir
    in the world.

The Basketball Hall of Fame, in Springfield.

Mount Washington, in New Hampshire. You can hike, drive up, or
take a train to the spot with the highest wind velocity ever
recorded, some of the worst weather on the planet, and if you're
    lucky, beautiful views ;-)/2

Salem, Massachusetts, is an interesting town.

    	The Witch Museum
The House of the Seven Gables
the oldest candy shop (in NE? US?)
a comparative newcomer to the candy business, Harbor Sweets*
    	Pickering Wharf (shopping and food)

    * At Harbor Sweets, they offer a free sample of candy when you visit -
    I recommend the Sweet Sloops.

In Boston, walk the Freedom Trail and spend time at Quincy Market.
Nearby is a street in which is embedded brass trash.

In NH, drive north to the mountains to see the Old Man. Stop by Castle
in the Clouds in the lake district.

Drive along the coast of Maine, too.

I live in souther NH, stop by if you like. I have a guest room (and a

David,

If you decide to stay with us in Nashua, there are some easily-reached
attractions in this direction, too.

Canterbury Shaker Village Museum, Canterbury, NH - several
other attractions in or near Canterbury, such as a furniture
	    maker and a potter
Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, NH
Strawbery Banke 18th-century reconstruction, Portsmouth, NH
(Yes, that's *one* `r' in Strawbery!)
Monadnock Music Festival (orchestral concerts Aug 17 & 24,
chamber concerts Aug 27 & 29, concert performance of Virgil
Thomson's opera "Lord Byron" Aug 31) - I can get you tix for
any of these (assuming reimbursement, of course. :-) )
Downtown Live concerts in Nashua's Holman Stadium (Michael
Bolton Aug 23, Bonnie Raitt Aug 28, Allman Bros Aug 31) - I
can probably get you tix for these, too.

Don't try to overdose - pick what *you* want to do. If anything - it's
okay to sit and veg, too. :-)

I will post my full itinerary in a day or two but for now I'll let
you know that Ivy and I will be arriving in Boston about 11am on
Saturday 7th September. We will be staying at Liz Augustine's place -
thanks again Liz. We will be in town until the following Wednesday.

As for a time to get together with the masses, how about Saturday
night? We will only be coming from Orlando in the morning so the
travelling wont worry us and more people should be able to make it on a
Saturday night. Now I'm not going to be able to organise this from
here so are there any volunteers? Don't know what the best idea is, a
party at somebody's place or a restaurant outing etc. Personally I'd
prefer the former as it is a little easier to mingle with everybody.
It will be almost three months since the Fifth Anniversary Party so
everybody should be ready for another get together.

I'm planning to take 3 months off next summer and go to France and
maybe Ireland (2 months in France and 1 month in Ireland). I haven't had a
summer off since I was 16, and I've never been outside the USA. I
studied French pretty seriously in High School and College, but I've
never been a very good speaker, and of course, I'm rusty, so... this
    will be quite an adventure!

Anyway, I'm writing about this here because I want to find out if there
are any Womannoters living in France and Ireland. If you're there,
could you write to me and let me ask you some questions? I haven't
decided yet where I'm going. I want to find out about women's and
lesbigay communities, music (places to listen and perform), and cost of
living. I'm hoping that I'll be able to rent a room in someone's house
    to keep costs down.

So... if you live in France or Ireland or have travelled there
extensively, I'd love to talk with you.

    Thanks!

    G'Day,

Looks like we may have picked a bad time! The following Friday is
no good as we leave Boston on the Wednesday (11th). We were originally
coming the weekend before but realised it was the Labor Day weekend so
we delayed it for a week.

    David.

Humm, David, if all Australian men look like Mel Gibson then you have
nothing to fear. Although most of us will bark at you. :^)

Just as long as you don't behave like the actor who plays
    Crocodile Dundee.

Well, like I said, I can't plan on being back in time for Saturday, but
if someone else wants to arrange it, don't let me stop you!

Why don't we plan on a dinner somewhere for the Tuesday before you
    leave?

If that is a better option then let's go with it. You are certainly
one I was looking forward to meeting D! so I don't want to miss you.
Of course a party on Saturday night as well as the dinner is fine with
me if everybody else wants it too. We were originally thinking of
going to New York for the day on Tuesday but we can change that to the
Monday if we go to dinner on Tuesday night.

I've only got a few more days access to the net so if anybody has any
plans let me know soon or at least let Liz know before 9/7.

    David.

    G'Day,

Well this is it! Today will be last day on the net (unless I log
in from home). Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
Still don't know anything about Tuesday night - just let Liz know.
I hope Lorna will be back in time. I think you said that you were back
on the 10th so maybe you will be.

Also, can whoever has got the =wn= album please make sure that
somebody who will be where I will be gets it so i can check it out. I
want to see all the photos from the 5th Aniversary Party!

Many thanks to Charles Haynes (and Janice Comstock!) and Ray Davis and
Fredrick Ward for entertaining me so eloquently in San Jose last
Monday! Despite what it looked like, I thought the food was great (I
kinda made it into a color collage worthy of the average 3 year old!)
    and the company was peerless!

It was a pleasure for me, as well, to meet all of you.
Sorry the time was so short. I would have enjoyed spending more
time. Since you (Lauren) stated that this was your first and
last visit to the West Coast [ 8-{ ] then perhaps I'll have
the joy of meeting you sometime again on the "right" coast.
And Charles, and Ray, it was good to meet you, as well.
Perhaps we'll run into each other again sometime, too.

I, too, will be in Boston's vacinities (for personal fun; no

Well, David off the net now, I guess, but I'd still like to get a
dinner together or something for him. My schedule has finally firmed
up some, and it turns out that the best time for me would be Sunday the
8th. Of those who wanted to come to this, for how many is this a
possible date? Afternoon or evening? Anyone know whence he can be
    reached? Ideas?

Frederick, if it takes a trip back east for you and I to find an excuse to
meet, so be it ;-) (our buildings are less than 10 miles apart...). Do you
know/prefer the Greater Maynard area, or Boston? Lets plan to get together
for dinner sometime during the week following Labor Day, and make it open
for any who'll join us. Restaurant will hate us, but hey, we're tourists.

I can dig it, Doug! ;-) Heck, it's more fun meeting 3,000
miles away, isn't it? (This way we can never blame our own back
yards, huh? :-) ) Sort of reminds me of sexual habits I have
always believed...that is, if one wanted to have sex (and I'm talking
a bunch of beliefs from nearly two decades ago, so please forgive
the limited thoughts...) it was always better to find the girl next
door----at the beach, preferably hundreds of miles away. (Seems that
it was somehow less emotionally "dangerous" if *done* someplace else.)
(And before anyone jumps on me...I never took vacations and never
went anywhere away from home...:-} )
OKay, sounds like a nice idea...Sunday is firmly taken...other
days are still up for grabs (although either Wed or Thurs is also
going to be used...) So, maybe off-line I can give you a number to
    reach me and vice versa?
I believe I will be somewhere around Leominster most of the time
(with at least one planned day in Cambridge) if this helps. I don't
know the area so maybe you can figure it out?

After talking with Doug, it was determined that Thursday
was the only day *we* had in common...meanwhile, a DEC friend of
mine set up a Thursday evening dinner in Littleton. So, I will
extend this to anyone who may be interested in meeting those who
will be there to be greeted at a place (unknown to me) called the
Yangzee River (sp?) on Route 10. We plan to meet for dinner at
6 p.m. There will be others there some of whom participate in
Womannotes and some who participate in a few other conferences.
Since this is likely to be my only trip to Boston for a while
(next year I'm going to Europe -- Barcelona, primarily) I would
very much like to take advantage of it and would definitely enjoy
meeting anyone who would like to drop in, whether for a hello or
    for the evening.
I don't know if reservations are required or not, and don't
know if numbers are important, but if you are fairly certain you
are going, then I will take the information and pass it along.
I will be here (in Ca.) until Saturday morning.
Doug, I hope this can work for you, too.
