1012.0. "The Womannotes Soapspeak-English glossary" by DEMING::VALENZA (Note to the Trashcan Sinatras.) Fri Aug 30 1991 13:50

Since this notes file has seen a lot of examples of Soapspeak lately, I
think it would be useful to have an official Soapspeak to English
glossary. This would be helpful in several ways. For one thing, it
would allow us to understand notes that we might otherwise falsely
construe as incoherent gibberish simply because we don't speak the
dialect. Secondly, it would prevent us from false characterizing
anyone as a bad speller, when in fact they are using the *correct*
    spelling for their dialect.

If anyone has any information on differences in grammar between
Soapspeak and English, that would also be useful.

    hahaha....

so, I'm reading this topic, saying to myself "What the heck is he
talking about?! No one talks about soap operas, or uses soap opera
lingo in this file! And what *is* soap opera lingo, anyway?!"

Sometimes, I'm not even the sharpest *spoon* in the drawer!

femniac, feminazi - "endearments" (no insults permitted) used to refer
     to feminists;
parking-lot crowd, pahking lotters - descriptive term for individuals
who believe the solution to third world nations' defiance of US
administration desires is to turn those nations into parking lots, ie,
     via nuclear war.

The dialect is actually rich and useful to painting vivid word
pictures; though practitioners seldom seem to actually communicate
ideas; often preferring the enragement of the holders of opposing
viewpoints as a means to hide their lack of support for their own
positions. Sadly a glossary such as this will do little to communicate
the true nature of this dialectical style.
