1002.0. "Leather and Suade, esp Cleaning them" by POWDML::MARTIN () Tue Aug 27 1991 11:22

Does anyone have suggestions on how to lift stains out of leather and
suades, especially tough stains like oil and coffee? Can it be
done at home? I'm looking for a method beyond rubbing the stains away
with saddle soap, sandpaper, brush, etc.

Any comments on leather goods in general would also be interesting.

1002.1Talcum powder is great!MR4DEC::MAHONEYTue Aug 27 1991 12:4113
I used to clear oil stains from suede leather with talcum powder rubbed
into it, then brush it away with a nice clean brush... (a tooth brush
is great for that), repeat if necessary. If the stain is old I don't
think it will work though, this is a good remedy for stains that happen
at the time... a quick 'dose' of talcum powder will completely eliminate
the stain. My mother used to do wonders with leather and she could
clean just about everything out of all types of leather... (Spanish
leader is famous for its quality and she knew how to treat them)
unfortunately, I don't have her expertise.
A good cry cleaner's will give you advice besed on the nature of the
    stains. Lots of luck. Ana

Haven't tried it yet, but I recently heard a recommendation to use
Simple Green (a commercial biodegradable cleaner) on leather, uh,
gear...works well on tough stains (including protein stains, like
juice, grass and blood) and doesn't damage the leather.

Since I'm up to my rear (literally) in leather (I only have
5 saddles! (-;) you get to know what will clean and what
not to use. Murphy's Oil Soap....No! It leaves a film behind
that causes a whitish substance on the leather, and mildew...
A good saddle soap and a damp (not wet) sponge will work wonders
on leather....leather needs moisture to stay supple, and saddle
    soap cleans and moisturizes.....
I clean all my boots, dress or riding, with saddle soap and then
I use a spray laquer designed for leather. It puts a like-new
shine on the leather boot, and resists dirt and mildew, etc.
On my everyday saddles, I use the laquer, too.
