986.0. "The Big E!:1991" by WFOV11::BAIRD (IwonderifIcouldbeyourmiracle?) Thu Aug 22 1991 08:11

I was asked to put info about the Eastern States Exposition in the
    file, so here goes.

What: A *large* fair held each year in the same Permanent space.

    When: Sept. 11 thru 22

    Where: West Springfield, Mass.

Price: $7.00 at the gate, $5.00 advance--tickets should be available
    	in most N.E. sites.

Time: Each day from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm

    What's there??? you say?

Well, there's enough to do there to take up a whole day and possibly
two. It's more than a fair, in fact around here it's refered to as
The Big E! (no, nothing to do with E Grace!!)
Here's some of what goes on:
A circus, an "A" rated horse show, stunt car show, musical acts, midway
rides, agricultural events (sheep, cows, horses, etc. good educational
stuff for the kids--in all of us), bungee diving show, crafts, product
displays and can't forget the Avenue of States--a building for each of
the N.E. states showcasing their specialties (or as I call it, eating
    your way through N.E.!)
Oh, mustn't forget the *food*!! Everything from baked potatoes to
hot dogs to ice cream to fried dough! A junk food lover's paradise!
Oh, I forgot to say that the admission price covers *all* the
activities once you go through the gate--except for the rides and food
and any other "merchandise" that you purchase!! Come with your check
book or credit card cause you *will* be tempted by the merchants there!

Here's a list of the musical performers:

    Loretta Lynn
    Mary Wilson (of the Supremes)
    Charlie Daniels Band
    T. Graham Brown (Taco Bell commercial)
    Patty Loveless
    The Osmond Boys (second generation!)
    The Marvelettes
    Rebecca Holden
    Tom and Dave Wopat
    The Hollanders

Let me know if you need more info, or call 1-800-639-2908

    enjoy!

A word to the wise - go on a weekday if at all possible, unless
you _like_ dense crowds. On weekends, arrive early.

    RE: The big E!

Hahahahahah...the first time Debbi said this to me I thought she was
talking to me about E Grace also :-)

Yes!!! Count me in on the fair. I'm going to try to get some other
people to go. Junk food? Did someone say junk food???? Yeah! Do you
they shortbread there? I love shortbread, and choclate and...oh darn
I"m getting myself hungry. Better stop.

So what weekend are you planning on going DEbbi? Sept. 14,15 or Sept
    21,22?

986.5Little E goes into Big E how many times?WFOV11::BAIRDIwonderifIcouldbeyourmiracle?Fri Aug 23 1991 02:2733

Looks like E Grace has a new nickname! ;-) The little E!
Vertically challenged, indeed! Better than being horizontally
    challenged, I suppose!! :-o

Yes, Laurie, junk food as far as the eye can see!! I don't eat
much for two days before hand, so I can enjoy myself and not worry!
Ummm! Thin, crispy onion rings! Tempura veggies! Belgian waffles!
AAccchh! Now I got myself hungry! See what you did, Laurie!! ;-)

I think the 14-15 sounds better to me, a lot of people wait for
the last weekend to go. The note about a lot of people on weekends
is right, but the place is really big so can accomodate them. The
biggest problem is the traffic. I live just across the river from
the fairgrounds which is normally a 10-15 minute drive. During the
fair, I don't even *think* of going anywhere near the Big E unless
I'm going there. That simple little drive would turn into a 1-2 *hour*
ordeal!! But, going there is no problem-- *I* (along with most of the
area residents!) know how to get around the traffic and come in the
back way. So it takes 20 minutes, better than sitting in line!!

If anyone would like to go and needs a place to stay, I can offer
floor space to those hardy souls with sleeping bags! Also kitchen use
and Cable!! What more do you want?? Ok, so I have Nintendo too!!
I can also check with some of the others around here to see if they
have any space. There are lots of motels near the Big E, but most are
    probably booked.

Anyone need directions?? Let me know.

    If you're going, enjoy!!

It really can get very crowded on the weekends. The last time I went
was about 10 yrs. ago and I was in a human bumper-to-bumper, slow moving,
line with my husband and daughter. Suddenly I felt trapped and spying
an empty picnic table between exhibits, I turned to my husband and
said, "I've gotta get out of here! I can't take it anymore!" and
ran over to the picnic table and sat down, and it felt so good to be a
little further apart from my fellow humans! :-)

Don't forget freshly made maple walnut ice cream, maple frappes,
turkey dinner, calzones, bachlava, stuffed baked potatoes. Now
    I'm really hungry.

My girlfriend and I go to the BIG E every year. I feel that we
both walk so much we can eat like pigs!! Also a nice place to do
    some Christmas shopping.

Across from all the state buildings is a little shaded garden
spot where they serve wines and cheeses. It gets overlooked
a lot, and makes a greta break from the throngs. Come to
think of it, why am I telling you?
