810.1HelloHelloNECSC::BARBER_MINGOThu May 09 1991 22:4933
    Hello,

    My name is Cindi B-M, and I, am a notaholic.

    I first realized the problem when
    I found myself giving up most breaks/lunch hours/ and many
    after five hours just to keep remotely up with replying in notes.
    My co-workers began to think I was anti social, since I
    never left when they were going out.

    I realized it was getting worse when my husband started calling
    me up from home and saying "Are you noting again? Stop reading/
    replying and come home."

    I knew it had gone too far, when I found myself loosing a
    friend over speaking styles in notes files. My noting
    persona had gone awol and was spilling into my three-D interests.

    I have to get a handle on it somewhere.

    I know, it is kind of silly to note a notaholic problem.
    But that is just the kind of irony and exploring them with others
    that caught me in the first place.

    I'm going to try to fade, not out of anger, fear, or supression...
    but out of a need to get back to my original state.

    The next time my husband calls me at 9PM and I am at work.
    I want him to say as he used to "Working again? Come home."

    But I am not a workaholic. So that is OK ;->

    G'Day,

    	If it were only Notes that I try to keep up with it would a breeze.
    I'm also pretty active on USENET and the BBS scene too and they can
    take up a LOT of time.

    	As for noting from home, I do it all the time. I find Sunday night
    the best because the net is pretty quiet and therefore fairly fast. My
    wife often calls out at midnight on a Sunday night wanting to know when
    I'm coming to bed. "Just another five minutes ..." is my reply, hoping
    she'll go to sleep and I can stay for another hour or two :-).

    	What I'm really looking forward to is the release of the DECpc
    notebook. With that I can go to bed and take the computer with me,
    plug it into the phone line and away I go ..... (my wife doesn't know
    of these plans yet - wonder what she'll think?)

    On a more serious note (if that's allowable in this string ;-)...

    Notes addiction - to the point where it can interfere with
    working and cause stress - seems to be fairly common.
    I believe it doesn't get discussed because everyone is
    concerned about giving fuel to those who may want to shut down
    NWR conferences etc., but I know quite a few people who
    seriously consider that they have a problem.

    I've also heard from a counsellor who works with a lot of referred
    DECcies that many of them refer to themselves as "notes addicts"...

    Several of them have been trying to find out if there's
    a way that they can disable their own personal access to Notes.
    Anyone know if this is possible?
    I'd heard that you can do it for your own account, affecting only your
    own access, and that it would need to be switched on again by the
    system manager (possibly a good deterrant!).

810.11LEZAH::BOBBITTLift me up and turn me over...Fri May 10 1991 12:0520
    I think people who are "notes addicts" cannot blame the medium, or the
    people in it, or the fact that there are so many notesfiles. I know
    alot of the people who find Dungeons and Dragons evil because it leads
    youngsters to jump off buildings or get lost and starve in caves simply
    don't realize it's a function of the PEOPLE WHO PLAY IT. some people
    will take things to an extreme. Some people WILL OVERDO. If it's not
    D&D, maybe it will be a religious cult. If it's not VAXNOTES, maybe
    they'll spend too much time on USENET, or taking too many coffee
    breaks, or whatever.

    My main fear is that notes often takes the blame for reduced
    productivity, when in fact there is such a thing as SENSIBLE NOTING,
    just as there is such a thing as FUN D&D, and although there WILL be
    people who cannot handle moderation (no pun intended) of these things,
    the media themselves should not suffer the brunt.

    (sorry, I seem to have wound up on a wee soapbox there, apologies)

    You mean you log out when you make love?

    The ex-girlfriend of a classmate of mine defined a hacker as
    someone who after making love rolled over to check his mail. There
    was no question that he was still logged in.

    This may be why my wife moved the terminal out of our bedroom when
    she moved it. (Of course, it's more likely that she wanted the
    space for her dressers.)

	This could be done by putting an ACL on the NOTES executable that
	disallows execute access from your account.

    Re .11
    I absolutely agree with you, Jody.
    The medium should not be blamed.

    However, if individuals do acknowledge that they have a personal problem
    with it I believe that they should be able to disable their own access.

    And I suspect that many people would like to be able to do this
    but don't ask how for fear of the medium being blamed and the whole
    thing getting shut down.

    And thanks Andy - I'll pass that on.

    About the home thing. I have one, but there is that "USE
    of Bandwidth thing" and the phone bill that bothers me.

    Also...
    My SO doesn't call then..
    He walks over... and says ..
    "Are you ever going to stop caressing/toggling those keys?
    I know... It's the keypad isn't it? You long to control
    it? You love the way it responds to your touch, and then
    says what you want it to say."
    And I, guilty, look away... log out, and form my replies
    away from the phone. Sometimes I make written outlines.

    So I note away from him. Where I will not be disturbed.
    In the end...
    I wind up noting alone.

    I have been told to watch out for SOAPBOX. They say it is some
    of the strongest stuff out there.

    Just a little fix,
        I think I am done now.
           I might just go get some chocolate, a Pepsi, and get
           back to my manuals. Lunch hour is nearly up.

nah, soapboxers are okay, just attention-loving little monsters, kinda like my
nephew when he was three-years-old, but better at invective. Make sure to wear
your thickest skin, and pick you fights carefully. And Kath is absolutely right,
things get a lot nastier here than there. Don't ever bother asking for a
hug there, you won't get it, but sympathy might be offered spontaneously.
Can't speak for how it was there when they were under attack (as we were here
last year), only for lately. Somewhere in the TrueConfessions string I gave my
reasons for liking the Box.

anyhow, I'm here in this string; that should tell you something...

810.19set command/del=notesTRIBES::LBOYLEAre you now, or were you ever. . Sat May 11 1991 20:046
You can disable notes by putting
    $ SET COMMAND/DELETE=NOTES
    into your login file. Of course, you can enable it again by
    changing the login file, but it does increase the distance slightly
    between you and notes. I do this when I'm working on a project
    and want to avoid notes for awhile.
810.20Betty Ford Notes Center approach?STAR::BECKPaul BeckSun May 12 1991 02:2624
    Another approach to self-imposed control is to put the line

    $ no*tes :== @sys$login:notes

    in your LOGIN.COM and write a NOTES.COM which contains something
    like

$ day = f$cvtime("today",,"weekday")
$ if day .eqs. "Saturday" then goto imbibe
$ if day .eqs. "Sunday" then goto imbibe
$ now = f$time()
$ hour = f$cvtime(now,,"hour")
$ if (hour .lt. 9) .or. (hour .ge. 17) then goto imbibe
$ write sys$output "%NOTES-I-TCHTCH, just say no to notes"
$ exit
$
$imbibe:
$ define /user sys$input sys$command
$ notes := notes
$ notes /interface=character 'p1'
$ exit

    Problem with this is if you know you've done it, you know how to
    undo it.
