A large lexicon yielded (yelt?) these capitalized palindromes:

Abba Ada Adda Adinida Ajaja Aka Akka
Alala Amma Ana Anna Arara Asa Ata
Atta Bab Bob Eve Ewe Kassak Kazak
Malayalam Mam Nan Ofo Oto Otto Pop
Samas Senones Seres Sis Sus Tat Tebet
Uru

I suppose you can discard Bob and Otto and Pop right off the bat. I sheepishly
suggest that you strike Ewe as well.

Ada, Anna and Eve have already been contributed.

The only other words which I am sure I have heard as girls' names are Ana and
Nan Many of the remaining words may not be names, or come from cultures I am
not familiar with; some could even be boy's names. However, they might have
wonderful meanings.
				Hope this helps,

> Why does the list in .16 contain "Pop" but not "Mom"?

Because the lexicon it was drawn from contains "Pop" (and "pop") but not "Mom"
(or "mom"). I don't know how the lexicon was composed, but it may mean that no
one ever had to use it to spell-correct a document with [Mm]om in it.

If it's any consolation, it does contain "mum" (but not "Mum").

Could be that both "pop" and "mum" occur in American English
as words in their own right, whereas "Mom' does not.

Very clever, DanaD. I THOUGHT someone might pick me up on that one.
I can't tell you how many times I tried to rewrite that sentence in

This has been loads of fun. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
My husband has his heart set on "Hannah". Our only fear is that it
seems to be experiencing a resurgence in popularity. We don't want
her to be one of six Hannahs in her kindergarten class.

    Derek:

Just to set your mind at ease:

If you've been following the replies to my original note, you've seen
some of the suggestions people have offered. I'm sure most of them
are tongue-in-cheek, and no one would dream of using them for the very
    reason you mentioned.

They are silly and contrived, but you have to admit, it's been fun.
I opened the conference just to see what people could come up with.
But your point is well taken. I'm sure there are people who have no
comprehension of the effect a silly name (or initials) will have on
    their child's pscyhe.

My husband is an Irish National, so we looked closely at Gaelic names,
but in America, most of them would sound downright cruel (Gobnait?).

    - Carolorac

PS: I once knew a man named Alexander Mlodzianowski. The couple next
door to me are Adelard and Fabiola. I once worked for a check printing
company and placed orders for people named Brand New O'Brien, Mary
Golden Brown, Mary Christmas, Candace Kane, Chris Cross and Estella
Faggott. We've all heard the story of the twins, Ura and Ima Hogg.
There was a man convicted of arson in New Hampshire with the last name of
Lalumiere ("the light"). A Catholic cardinal in the Philippines has
the unfortunate last name of Sin. I could go on.
Perhaps this begs the birth of a new conference: SILLY NAMES/REAL PEOPLE.

Re funny names: Try doing some genealogy and you'll turn up lots of
interesting names. My favorite of those I've found is "Wealthy Lauretta
Shafter"; wishful thinking, I wonder, or descriptive? ;-) [And I'd hate
to have a name like that at income tax time.]

Re palindromes: one of the suggestions was "Mairiam" - turns out that
"Mariam" [not "Miriam", though it may have originated as a misspelling]
is a family name of ours, so it's pretty close. Alas, whenever I read
"Mairiam" I think of "Mairzey doats," so I couldn't in all honesty
    recommend it...
