648.0. "Do you carry a tune?" by CSC32::M_VALENZA (Make love, not war.) Wed Jan 16 1991 19:38

Personally, I *can't* carry a tune. I can't even carry tunes with the
any word resembling "carry" in it (thus I can't carry "Carrie Ann" by
the Hollies). I sometimes get carried away and start singing with the
car radio, but if anyone ever heard me they would probably try to carry
    me away.

So, the question of the day is: Do you carry a tune?

I learned to sing on key a mere few years ago. I have a small range
where I can sing loud, and a larger range where I can sing softly. If
I'm singing with other people, I need to have the top part or I can't
really hear myself and lose the whole part I'm trying to sing.

and, btw, *I* think you can sing in a really groovy, unique way,
    Mike....

1st impulse answer: you mean you *can't*? :-)

my mom couldn't carry a tune in a locked suitcase. my dad loves opera,
but come to think of it I've NEVER heard him sing a note.

I have what I call a "Musically Associated Memory". Other folks tell
jokes, or make puns. I can come up with an appropriate snappy little
musical snippet for almost any situation, tho sometimes it's obscure to
    everyone but me...

The secret to singing on key is to listen to your own voice.
I've been singing since forever. I useta have a good voice, but 2
things interfered. First, I started smoking (at 21, what a fool) :-(
Second, and at the same time as (1), when I was living on a kibbutz
there wasn't much to do for entertainment, so I sang. I must have sung
every song I knew (and that's a lot) at least 500 times, and I finally
got tired of my own voice, and quit singing for about half a year.

    Yeah, I carry a tune.

Actually, given *any* sort of choice, I'll sing the harmony. :-)

And like Sara, my "trivia" skill is having a snippet of song as
an answer to almost any question. Used to do it all the time in
high school, which drove some of my friends nuts. Led to my scenic
design teacher, during a lecture on why musical sets are seldom
done in a "realistic" mode, (because in real life people don't go
around bursting into song) to come to a dead stop, look me straight
in the eye, and say "Well, *most* people don't".

No, but that never stopped me. It's one reason my wife divorced me.
(seriously) I can't sing well to save my soul. I do insist on singing
along with the radio, especially when I'm in the car in traffic. I do
get looks and it used to drive my ex up the wall. "Stop it. You're
making a fool of yourself and me." I, of course, kept it up as it is a
    harmless little quirk.

yes, I carry a tune ... in a basket, in my heart, in the trunk ...
everywhere it's legal [or I can get away with it]

My cats don't like me to sing to them ... probably because I generally
dance them around when I do ... Milo particularly hates it when I sing
    'Land of Canaan.'

Rick can abide my Irish tunes, my Spanish tunes, and just about
anything off of FNX ... but he carries himself out into the yard when I
revert to my Latin or Italian tunes ... _hates_ the Carmina Burana and
    Gregorian Chants

I particularly like the resonance I get on the high notes off the
windshield in rush-hour traffic ... but go through monstrous pangs of
insecurity when I change cars until I find the right harmonics for the
    new windshield.

Nope, not to save my life. But, it doesn't stop me, music is my first
love, and Jim Morrison's music my second (he couldn't carry a very good
tune himself in a lot of his songs). My son (21 months) only enjoys a
hand full of songs that I sing to him, and the others make him run
    away like a scared deer.

I don't care how badly I sing though, I still howl with the car radio and
I love to have a friend in the car that sings as poorly as I do join in
at the top of their lungs too. :^)

After all, I am Elvis's Love Child.

648.19CSS::FRASERBut I don't have an accent; you do!Thu Jan 17 1991 18:045
Nope - I sing in the key of the back door. I play guitar well
enough, but when I add voice, my little Siamoose mog looks up
at me soulfully with a concerned expression that says "I hope
        it stops hurting soon!"

I love to sing. I haven't got the pitch or tone control I had when I
was a little monster in a Kiwanas Boys Choir, but I still use the voice
anyway. During the first hour or so of the day is best, my bass is
strongest before my vocal cords tighten up or the stress of daily life
wipes out the low notes. Used to have about 3 octaves...but I haven't
    checked in a long while.

Annie, are your cats more concerned with the slow "Land of Canaan" from
"Closer to Fine", or the fast one from "Strange Fire"?

I think I can carry a tune. I was always chosen to sing lead solos
in Junior and Senior High. I love to sing and do so as much as
possible. One can always tell when something is bugging me because
the radio will be on and I won't be singing along. My son loves
it when I sing to him, although it's usually made up songs that
include his name. And if I don't know the words, I'll hum or whistle.

Well, I don't like to brag, but I did sing professionally, that
is, people threw money at me. (nobody does that anymore, sniff).
Up to the ripe age of five, I would sing to the crowd waiting to
enter my Dad's carny sideshow from the soundtruck, along with
whatever pop record he was playing to attract attention.
    (A you're adorable, B you're so beu-tif-ul, C you're a cutie...
-guess the decade!-). Anyway, i had blond curls, a rosy chubby
face, a male shirley temple! Well, hardly male, i mean, puberty
came along twenty years later and changed my voice forever, ruining
my singing career, unless you need someone to harmonize with a
washtub base....i coulda been wayne newton, if they'ed neutered
    me early enough...mwr

    I think I do - no-one in any of my choirs has kicked me yet. :-}
But then, I sing in a mob for company - I'm too shy to solo.
And in the car I turn the tape up really loud....

Main thing is - I *love* to sing, and hang the accuracy!

All the time -- it seems most of the time I have a song running through
	the back of my head.

Also, when I play my radio in my cube, I'm constantly joining in
for a phrase or two, until I remember I might be disturbing someone
and shut up again. (Although I haven't had any complaints yet)
