611.0. "WN Lite: Where would you take YOU?" by RAMOTH::DRISKELL (seeking optimism) Fri Jan 04 1991 00:15

Where would you go if you had 24 hours to spend, by yourself,
and could magically be anywhere, anytime, with no outside worries?

Where would you take yourself for a good 'pampering'?

611.1to the beach!RAMOTH::DRISKELLseeking optimismFri Jan 04 1991 00:1930
Since I asked, I'll start. (It seems like a good time for more 'lite'
    topics..)

    Where would I take me?

To the beach. On Cape Cod. It would be 3PM, I'd be sailing a Hobi
Cat, drifting with the wind on the Bay (Western) side. Trailing behind
me some water & wine. Just before Sunset I'd dock my boat on the
western tip, wander down the sand, and sip wine & collect sea shells
and memories as I watch the sun sink out of view. (Of course, this is
a perfect summer "sunset" day, just enough clouds to create beautiful
    colors w/o bringing any rain.)

Later I'd have dinner in P-Town, at an outdoor cafe, and watch the
people pass by. After dinner I'd wander through the shops, increasing
my jewelry and novelty collections. 'Long about midnight I'd head back
to my cottage, for a late nite dip in the fresh water pond that's the
back yard. I'd fall asleep listening to the sound of the waves
crashing on the beach in the distance.

Early morning ..(OK, OK, mid-morning!,,, :-} ) would find me back on
the beach on the ocean side, alternating swimming with watching the
surfers. Perhaps joining in a pick-up game of volleyball. Perhaps
just relaxing in the sun. Snacking on the gourmet pic-nic I brought.
Unfortunately, all too soon it's 3PM again and my 24hrs are over.

My idea of summer bliss, solitary style. 'Course, still not better
than great s... (ooops, wrong topic!)

611.2Caneel Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin IslandsNEMAIL::KALIKOWDNutcracker Protocol Honeymoon SuiteFri Jan 04 1991 00:413
Been there twice, last time about 10 years ago in a previous life.
Heaven on earth. I don't wanna describe it, too great, but I *will*
say I wanna return at least once before kicking off... Hoo-Hah!!!
611.3lazy...LEZAH::QUIRIYChristineFri Jan 04 1991 00:4530

I just did this recently. :-)

I'd be on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. I'd get up at 6 a.m.,
take a *hot* shower and have a cup of coffee, maybe a bowl of cereal.
Pack up my supplies for the morning in my day pack. Go outside, get on
my bike and ride 10 minutes through the lifting fog to the beach. Walk
the beach, keeping an eye out for treasures, watch the pelicans and the
terns dive for fish, watch the mullet swim by, occasionally jumping out
of the water and landing with a flat slap. Watch the sky change from a
gray-purple to mauve to a soft yellow-pink. And the water changes colors,
too. Dolphins swim by off shore.

At about 10:00, get back on the bike. Ride to the inn and jump in the
pool. Change into not salty-and-sandy clothes and relax in the
courtyard with a good book. Ride into town and have lunch; either a
great souvlaki at the town beach or a crepe at a little "French" cafe.
Scan the local paper, browse the shops, ride down to the marina and
    watch the sailboats.

Back to the beach at about 5:00 to stroll the pier and talk to the
people fishing, and watch the sun melt into the water.

Ride home in the dusk. Watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy :-) and
then have dinner. Read some more, color with colored pencils, work on
a really good fantasy and go to sleep early.

What, I have to go back to work?

    Christine

I'd take myself on a plane, with me piloting, to a grass landing strip,
that has a few trees off to the side, and in the middle of the trees, is
a green-blue spa, with WARM WARM water. I'd take myself, and my
pic-a-nic basket, and enjoy a day in the sun, with no one around, with
the spa for dipping in, a good book to curl up with, and cheese and
diet-coke (no wine, I'm flying) in the basket for my hunger....

Once I finished my book, and my skin is dry enough to put my clothes
back on, I'd fold up the blanket, pack up the plane, and head back into
being a full time mother/career person.

Flying home the long way o'course :-)

all the places that came to mind, i'd want to share with my sweetie.

I did a 24 hour trip two years ago and I would love to do a similar
trip again. My mom, my sister and I went to the Bahamas for the day.
We left early in the morning, the flight was about three hours. We
sat on the beach for a while then in the afternoon we browsed through
the local shops. We had dinner at the hotel and then enjoyed a few
hours of gambling. At 10pm we boarded the plane to come home.

Now would be a good time to experience some hot sun and sand again.

I'd be on the coast of Maine in the middle of summer, a hot (well, 80
degrees is hot for the coast of maine) day with a light breeze and at
least 10 miles visibility out to sea. There'd be lovely food for
nibbling (a picnic basket perhaps), and a good friend or two, and
there'd be a high tide for the surf and a low tide for beachcombing and
looking in the tidal pools. There'd be visitors bringing smiles and
hugs, and there'd be several locals who brought by some old stories of
the island and its people. There'd be a trip to the small library at
the point of the island sometime in the afternoon (walked, not driven)
to skim all the best parts of all the books I loved there in younger
years. At night, there'd be fireworks over the water, and the sound of
the ocean to sing me to sleep.

611.11Anywhere at my choice of season?CSC32::M_EVANSFri Jan 04 1991 13:278
Anywhere in the Wiemenuche Wilderness near a good trout stream or lake
in the early summer after the ice out and spring muddy water. Both the
fly rod and the spiining rod and a generous selction of Flies and
lures, a bottle of Kardhu, or Nokandu, for the afternoon lazies, and a
great assortment of decadent backpacking food.

the woods. a view of mtns (far) or water (near) or both is nice but
not necessary. quiet. I'd bring food, sleeping bag, matches, pocket
knife and hatchet, and a new book. No tent, I'm going in mid-summer
and there's no rain forecast for days! Oh, I'd bring my new binocs
too. I'd walk in, pick a spot near running water, and settle down.

If winter, I'd do much the same, 'cept on x-c skis.
611.13SUBURB::THOMASHThe Devon DumplingFri Jan 04 1991 14:0916
	Devon, anywhere in Devon.

Walking along the coast, on the beaches, swimming in the sea,

Or, on the moors, walking the tors, taking the car for an "airing", and
	eating an icecream,

Or, in Plymouth, doing some shopping, walking to the barbican for
a cup of tea, and scones.

Or getting up early to watch the fish being landed,

Or sitting in a pub chatting to the locals and playing darts,

EPCOT Center at Disneyworld, Florida, in the section with all the
different countries. What a great place to wander around and explore.
It just so happens on this day that there are just enough people to
make it fun, but not so many that it feels crowded. It is also 80
degrees and there is light breeze blowing.

Light lunch in Germany and Dinner in the upstairs resteraunt in France.
Since this is my day to do whatever I want, I have decided that I don't
want to be alone, so my husband will be with me.

Actually we went to Disneyworld on our honeymoon and it was great.
Strolling along throught the countries in EPCOT together was the
perfect mix of fun, learning, relaxation, and activity.

Thanks for the note, I just feel like I went back there for a few
    minutes!

That one sounds good, especially the part about expecting a visitor.
I'd add a snow storm after the visitor arrives. A good blizzard, with
drifts up to the eaves, and enough food and other essential to last for
    a couple of weeks.

well, if I really wanted to _pamper_ myself ...

I'd take myself to a fine hotel ... say Claridges or the Ritz or the
Plaza or the Empress ... and make a few calls to clothiers to bring
around pretty things for me to look over for an evening out, to a
bookseller for delivery of the latest 'must read'. After outfitting
myself for the evening from the skin out, I would take my lovely book
and have a long fragrant soak with some Mumm [no, not _in_ the Mumm].
Then I would have a massage and a manicure, and then a leisurely light
supper on the terrace. After supper, I would go to the theatre or
symphony or ballet. When I returned late, there would be piping hot
French roast coffee, buttered croissants, fresh strawberries and white
grapes waiting for me. I should then read myself to sleep and sleep
until the sunshine woke me the next morning.

    Alternatively ...

I'd take my sleeping bag, my diary, Dune, and some oatmeal biscuits
up Boulder Canyon and just read and write and watch and think and
    meditate.
