585.0. "=wn= lite Who was the first noter you ever met?" by WMOIS::B_REINKE (bread&roses) Sat Dec 15 1990 19:40

This came up at the dinner at Maylings' last night. I mentioned
that the first noter I'd ever met was Kerry Faulkner (because I'd
come to his defense on a note in soapbox on vets ...I thought he
was a woman at first! sigh, for those who don't remember Kerry that
is a long story.) He introduced me that same evening to Steve
'eagles' Thompson, Lorna StHilaire and Mary Pare Stanley.

and out of that meeting and further corespondance with Lorna and Mary
I orgnized the first womannotes party. (Ancient history now.)

Anyway, we went around the table last night (at the suggestion
of Christine Quiriy) and everyone recalled the first 'noter' they
    had met.

and in thinking about it, I realized that I'd met both Pat White
and Eric Osmon years ago as part of a group of people who
got together to play chamber music at each other's homes. (I was
    a dedicated audience! ;-} ).

So who was the first 'noter' you met, and what were the circumstances?

the first three =wn= noters (and in fact, the first noters) i ever
met were beth keltz, with whom i played chamber music; the late
great sandy ciccolini, who drank me under the table; and our own
nancy bittle, who set up a dinner at amory's at which event i met
    a number of dear people.

The first noter I ever met was Steve Eagles Thompson, but it was
because of a string of replies in human_relations, where I offered to
buy him a drink because he thought I sounded unfriendly, or angry, or
bitter, or *something*. I can't remember exactly what it was about
now. It was 4 1/2 yrs. ago. Later the same evening, I met Mary Pare,
Bonnie Reinke and the infamous, but charming, Kerry Faulkner.

Now I'm trying to remember who I met next. I think the next noters I
met must have been the ones who attended the first womannotes party
that Bonnie organized because of our correspondence. I can remember
    meeting Liz Augustine at that.

Of course, in a way, the first noter I ever met was Rik Sawyer, because
I met him before I had ever heard of notesfiles, and he was the person
who told me about womannotes. I remember he said, As a matter of fact
there's a notesfile you might find interesting....

since he was chief architect of the group I joioned, then Tamzen Cannoy
and then later Nancy Bittle, Maggie Tarbet and Margaret Russell.

A pretty good initiation, in retrospect, wouldncha say!

Last week was teriffic -- I met *so* many great folks at the =wn=
parties. It's so much better to know the people behind the names! For
example, I found out that "bean sidhe" is Gaelic for "banshee" which I
thought was so very appropriate for a bean-counter... :-)

It was 1985 and when SEXCETERA was up and mature Noters were noting. I
was intrigued (who wouldnt be). Thru that notes file and others I
noticed Gale Kleinberger was a name that appeared often. She was
working in my group at the time. She was the first 'noter' that I met.
Soon a group of noters got together occassionally for lunch. That is
how I met my husband. He was also a noter in the building.

Ill always be grateful to Gale for that.

I believe Gale Kleinberger was the first active noter I ever
met as well. And when I met her, I couldn't believe I was actually
meeting *THE* Gale Kleinberger! ;^) (She seemed to appear in most
of the files I was reading at the time! Me, being a novice, read-
only noter was rather intimidated by that! )

My first Noter's party was almost two years ago (April) for
Andy Leslie at the Commonwealth Brewery. That's when I met MikeZ,
Jerry Eckert, Mike Foley and scads of other people.

POETS in summertime '88; Chuck rancho::price, Joel ophion::gringorten,
John wcsm::germano, Jim wcsm::daly, that first night. Joel and I
roomed together for a year and a half, and Chuck was the person who
told me about the open rec and encouraged me to interview for the
position I now hold. Within a few weeks Tony Purmal and Charles Haynes
had made POETS, so they were the first folks from =wn= I met. Following
that, I met a huge group (over 70 people) in April '89 in Washington for
the big Pro-Choice march...including Peggy, Maggie, Lee, Bonnie, Robin,
Catherine, Anne Marie, Annie, Liz, Pat, Marilyn, Les, David, ... and

The first noters I met were at the comic shop in Nashua, that I
frequent. I never got their names and couldn't recognize them if they
walked up to me now. The only ones from WOMANNOTES are D_CARROLL
(dbang) and Justine Sullivan at the concert at ZKO. I'd still like to
be able to spend more time talking with them and with others in this
file. I understand a lot of us were mystery personages at that concert,
to bad. Bonnie Rienke and I have tried twice now to meet and no luck.
    I promise someday Bonnie.

The only other NOTER was a person not from this file, but from one I
know longer frequent. She's in CXO and came East for a training course.
We have been electronic friends and phone friends here and outside of
work for a couple of years now. Anyway when she was East, she came to
Hudson, N.H., where I live, and we went to dinner. So far she is my
    closest NOTER friend.

The first noter I ever met is read-only in this file, but active in
other files. At the time I met him, I didn't even know what NOTES was,
but he introduced me to NOTES and noting, and also married me (though I
don't think NOTES had anything to do with that). Now, if you don't
think Ron counts, then Maggie Tarbet and Marge Davis Hallyburton were the
first noters I met -- at From All Walks of Life 1989.

I met Penny Smith McIntyre through NOTES when she used to note here.
Later, we met in person when she came to Salt Lake to teach a class
for us. I've also met Nanci VanFleet in person. (She put Jennifer
and me up for several days last year, or should I say she put up
with us;)?) Nanci, in turn, introduced us to Liesl, Carla, and
Sherry Litasi at a party she threw in my honor. The day after that,
I got to know Ken Stewart from FRIENDS. We share the same birthday

It's hard to say who was first. I've been with DEC for 6 years and
didn't start noting seriously until 3 months ago. Before I started
noting I interviewed Charlotte Richardson (she didn't take the job),
Jim Mackin interviewed me (I didn't take the job) and I also had met
Jody Bobbitt. And there's probably a lot of other noters I met not
knowing they were noters. Just after I started noting the first noter
I met was =maggie. I was so new to =wn= at the time I didn't realize
who she was until afterwards. (=maggie do you even remember? Kathy
Kelly introduced us.) Then I met E Grace, Martha Walker and Christine

the read-only closet. I followed a man through the door, to find out
later that he was the guest of honor! Nancy Bittle shepherded me
into the door. I sat with Martin Minow, D!, Sharon Walker, Jerry
Boyajian, Jim Mackin, and Nancy B. I remember Jody passing around
a picture of her in chain mail, which I never got to see. I also

The first individual I met who notes is Peter Conklin, when he managed
an engineering group in Merrimack and I served as his CSSE rep. Peter
still hosts the machine for the DIGITAL notes conference.

In 1985, Steve "Eagle" Thompson was the first person I met as a result
of noting. Together, we attended a Soapbox party at Corky Towle's and
met lots of other 'boxers and denizens of the MaDhOuSe (WhoAreYou). At
early netparties, I met Don Topaz, edp, Sandy (Tortorino) and Andy
Fraser, Jerry Boyajian, Jim Burrows, Simon Szeto, DTL, Steve Lionel,
Alfred Thompson, *** Kristy ***, Tom Blinn, Dennis Hagarty, Tamzen

Kleinberger, Peter "Q" Quodling, Nisreen Sunaa and Steve Hird, Roger

womannoter I met was Liesl Kolbe at a Notes DIG, Digital Interest
Group, function at IDECUS. I also met my good friend, Joyce LaMotte,
    through notes.

Noting brought together a number of couples I know, and I credit notes
with introducing me to my husband, John Hallyburton. John read the
OTHG, Over The Hill Gang, party notice in Singles; I read it in
NetParty, and we met there in May '87.

Meeting noters was one of the reasons I moved up to N.E. ;^).

Liz Augustine was the first noter I met, because we worked in the same
building. Many of the others I met 3 years ago at a -wn party at Dave W's
house. The one that sticks in my mind (even if she wasn't the "first") was
Jody B. But when you meet that many nice people, it isn't important who was

Hmmm. After just talking to Christine Quiriy on the phone, I have to
state that I have a habit, (good, bad? You decide) of calling up some
of the people who write to me and viceversa, off line. It helps me when
I read their notes and letters. It's fun to read a note in the writer's
voice. (in my mind) I try not to be a pest and a couple of us have
become "phone chums" that way. At work at least. Maybe this should be
in true confessions or someplace, but by talking to these people, I
    feel I have met them.

The first "Valuing Differences" notes conferences noter I

Well, a couple of Noters I've known for what seems like forever,
as I've known them in the B.D. (Before Digital) days. Jim Burrows
and Ann Broomhead among them (in fact, it was Ann's Ex who was
responsible for getting me in the company).

And a couple of noters I met B.N. (Before Notes), such as Dick
    Curtis and Eagles.

I'm not sure who was the "first" not counting the above. I was an
attendee at the very first Noters Party at Bill Wyman's place in

The first person I ever met who later became a noter was my husband
to be, in the last months of 1965. The first person I ever met who
later became a noter and who is still a noter was Mauritz Fredriksen.
He hired me, so I met him before I joined DEC, which means in early
October, 1969. The first person I ever met who later became a noter
in Womannotes was Arun Sankar; we joined DEC at the same time:
mid-October 1969. (When she reads this will be the first she is
aware of it, however, since I was married and using my married name
at the time.) The first person I ever met who later became a noter
in Womannotes with whom I have interacted was Jim Burrows. We met
at Boskone 8, which means in late April of 1971. The first person
I ever met who later became a noter in Womannotes with whom I have
interacted and who is still active in Womannotes is Jerry Boyajian.
We met a few hours later at Boskone 8, during the seminar with Larry

I first met after I became a Womannoter, and like that.

    Small company indeed!

The first people I met through notes were from the Singles notesfile.
Not sure that counts, for while it is surely through notes, maybe of
the people in there aren't "noters" (that is, they don't note outside
of Singles.) The very first was Barton Fiske. *sigh*

The first =wn=er I met? It was at a party two and a half years ago, at
David Wittenberg's house...I can't remember who was "first", but the
people who stand out in my memory are Bonnie R., Steve Lionel, Martin
    Minow, Ann Broomhead.

The first =wn=er I met in a context other than a party was Rachael
    McCaffrey (2nd Lt. USAF :-) )

And speaking of Sandy Ciccolini, where is she these days? Haven't seen
    her name about "town" recently!

I was at the same DEJAVU gathering Carla went to. So the first noter I
ever met was Carla. :-) It was a nice tone to set for my noting
    future!

    This is cute reading!

I knew a lot of people before I started noting, which is how I got
started noting. John Parodi would be the one I knew first, since
I met him on my first day on the job, and didn't meet Don Topaz
    until day 2.

The first person I met strictly through notes was Jon Callas. In
the GRAMMAR conference, we got into an argument about the usage
of the comma in English. We're still friends.

The first person I met through Womannotes was the charming but
    screwed-up Kerry Faulkner.

The first time I really remember meeting any NOTERS (as opposed to
people that I met who might dabble in notes, but weren't NOTERS per se)
was the first weekend I spent in New England.

Friday night was a Human_Relations party at Steve Lionel's
Saturday night was a Heavy_Metal party at Bill Akin's
Sunday afternoon was a Moans party at Horsefeathers

I can't even begin to name all the people that I met in that weekend.

The first noter I ever met was Harry Rose, when I was temping at the mill,1985.
We were having some problems trying to do some things in NOTES, since I
was just learning and he called down Kerry Faulkner. I met them out one
night at some small bar in Sudbury, near the mill, and met eagle that one
and only time. Anyone know what happened to Harry or Kerry? Last time I
knew Harry left the company. Don't know what ever happened to Kerry.

I met Mike Hanam through the games notes file via mail. We finally met at
a noters luncheon that Kristy Gleason put together at a Chinese Restaurant
in Acton.

That's about it. I've never had the courage to go to another luncheon since
I wouldn't know a soul.

Harry Rose joined the army about 2 years ago. He was going to get
trainin in electronics and the like. I haven't heard from him since.
    Hope he's okay...

Did Harry work for the data comm group in the mill? I may have worked
    with him for awhile.

Yes, Christine, I believe he did for a while. I knew him electronically
around early in 1986 and I know he was in the mill then.
