412.0. "All I want for XMAS is..." by BTOVT::THIGPEN_S (I donwanna wearatie) Mon Oct 01 1990 15:37

I remember a columnist wrote an article one year entitled "Working
Woman's Christmas List", which I found highly amusing, then and now.
(Regrettably) there are ALREADY Christmas displays in some stores,
    which triggered speculation.

What do YOU want for a holiday present this year?

In the article, the very top of the list was:
    	Wife, preferably the Stepford kind.

I guess I wouldn't want a third life-partner, one is more than enough
for me! but I wouldn't mind hitting the lottery and hiring a
housekeeper. I hate housework and cooking.

Enter your list items, both frivolous and serious.

I'd like a really comfy chair with a footrest, a good reading light, in
front of a fireplace complete with woodfire, a window to look out of,
an unending supply of good books (Ursula LeGuin, for starters), and

I'd have to go along with the idea of having an all purpose
    cook-cleaner-gardener-plumber-handyperson-phone message
    taker-nanny-shopper-accountant-parental bad guy. I've been a single
parent since my daughter was 10 months old (she's 6 now) and I get so
tired of having to do everything myself as well as never getting a
break from being the parental bad guy (you know, the one who always
    says "No").

It's not asking for much, is it? ;-)

    I always *say* I'd like a maid/housekeeper/butler/gardner/decorator/etc...
but what I really want is the *time* to do all those things myself, and
still be able to enjoy my carreer. Money is nice, but I really don't
need more (unless someone wants to pick up college tuition for my
    sons).

With *time*, I could spend it with the kids, make bread, clean my
[somewhat filthy] house, plant a new garden, train the dog better, go
on long weekend ski-trips, read, relax, chop wood, take a hike, ...

wouldn't want anybody to think of me in those terms. :-)

A new kitchen with LOTS of storage and especially a _really_good_
    _gas_range_ with *two*ovens*.

Lots of light, well laid-out, and aesthetically pleasing to the
    eye.

Also, it should have a door, so I can leave it messy when I want
    to. :^)

    Peace.

No arguing, no regretting of the last years, no regrets
concerning my moving out from my former boy friends apartment
and taking a new one of my one.

and I really would love to find my future husband, knowing
from the first moment that we suit together perfectly, that
we are GLAD to have found each other and that we know
that love and marriage needs people who WORK on this and
not only taking this for granted and doing nothing.

And I would wish that I will forget the 3 years with my former
boyfriend, being able to have a new relationship (hopefully
the last one and ending in a happy marriage) without
    thinking of the last one.

re .66, .67, .68, it's so depressing to see how many single women wish
they could meet a compatible, etc., man!!!! There are so many of us
single women and not enough desirable men to go around!

Your wording is interesting, how would you define a desirable man?

Wouldn't any free "desirable" man not only be looking for an
abundance of single female, but an abundance of *desirable* single
    females?

Cuts both ways, I would guess....
Otherwise it sounds like these lonesome wmn are looking for a
"desirable" man (whatever that is - seems to imply some qualitative
stuff) but men are looking for anyone free....

Or maybe that's the way it is?

Those single people (i.e. both women and men) that have difficulty finding an
"acceptable" partner generally have set their criteria too high.

Why do people look for someone more perfect than themselves?

    Re .76
It emerged, in a discussion in HU_REL I think, that when people
described their "perfect person" they often seemed to describe
a perception that they would aspire to themselves.
That is, they described to an extent how *they* would like to be seen.

Maybe that has something to do with it?

412.80YOU HAVE A POINT, RICH, BUT.......ASIC::WELCHWed Nov 14 1990 00:1116
Since I seemed to start this with my .66 I think I want to interject
something here.....I agree with you, Rich, that many times people do
set too high standards for themselves, but also feel strongly that all
too often people (in general, male or female) don't give themselves an
opportunity to take enough time, casual time, to get to know someone
for who and what they are before deciding it's a "No Go".....An initial
encounter may not offer everything that one would hope to find, but in
my late husband, I initially thought "I'll never date a bald man..."
but I learned to know him, and love all the other things that were the
best of him. We married and were totally happy until the day he died.
If I had done, as is so often done, and said"No thanks" after our
initial encounter I would have missed out on one of the dearest and
best people I have ever known. So, I think what I'm trying to say is,
sometimes we don't overset our requirements, but we never get that
chance to know someone or for him/her to get to know us.....That, I
think is what bothers me more about now in my life than anything...

Believe me I don't know anybody in the military (including myself) who
actually wants to "go black" in the gulf.

But if President Saddam believes, or comes to believe, that public
sentiment will stop the Western nations using force to get him out of
Kuwait then he'll just stay there for evr with a smug little smile on
his face working out who to roll over next (after all he has imperial
"historical claims" dating back to the Assyrian empire on most of the
    Middle East).

Hitler played these sort of bluffs and until he attacked Poland nobody
was prepared to call him: Saddam may be expected to do likewise until
somebody objects forcefully to his knocking over the next domino. Worse
if the US, UK and France walk away from this one he will gain great
face, and become de facto what he has always wanted to be: effective
    leader of the Arab-Islamic world.

He may not be a very nice guy, but he has proved himself a damn fine
poker player: the time is approaching for us all to see the cards ...

Note that his terms for "talking" are that "the Israeli-Palestine issue
be top of the agenda" - and if he manages to get talks on that basis
then he can withdraw from Kuwait still knowing that he has won and
Anmerica is no longer a factor in Middle East politics.

I shan't continue in this string - I note on this topic in other more
appropriate fora - but I will say this one last time that this isn't
about oil - nor about Texaco - nor about western economies. It is about
a direct attempt to take overall political control of the Middle East,
and then - and only then - to bring the Infidels of the West down. If
we don't face him down now then in five years he may control Saudi
Arabia and the rest of Gulf and after this there won't be a thing we in
the West can do to stop him short of all out nuclear war (it is however
a very good scenario for using neutron bpmbs so if we back away now we
    should restart development...)
