405.0. "FALL COLOR ALERT!" by NYEM1::COHEN (In search of something wonderful) Wed Sep 26 1990 13:43

Okay folks, I need some help here....and all you have to do is look out
your windows in the morning and let me know.

I don't believe any of the "fall alerts" that the NY newscasters tell
me...and I'm dying to get up to the New England area and see the
    gorgeous colors.;..

So, if you could alll let me know w3hen the best times are around your
areas, maybe I can plan a trip...my sister lives in edford, MA, and I
have a possible future sister-in-law (jumping the gun?) in Hampton,
    NH...

    HELP!

I'm no expert, but I think you should plan on coming around
next week or so and visiting first in NH and then in MA.

Well right here around Marlboro (Worcester/Boston area), we're at about
10-15% color, but the first colors to come out are the reds and oranges
and yellows of the swamp maples, the sugar maples, it's all the bright
colors. When the oaks join them in darker shades as we reach peak
foliage, the exciting contrast between green and yellow/red/orange is
reduced. I'd say wait two weeks before coming up if you're going to be
in this area. The whole foliage season moves from north to south, so
it's probably prettier up in NH right now.

I wouldn't hit southern Mass. for a least 3-wks. I was up towards
Maynard last weekend, and there were more colors than here, but,
    not peaking yet.

It seems to me that the colors that are out now are much prettier
than the beginning last year...the view out my back door is going
    to be fantastic..

According to our local (Boston) weatherpeople, the peak areas are all
in Northern Maine, N.H., and Vermont. This is usually pretty accurate.
Depends on things like heavy frosts, rainfall and cloudy weather. The
sunny, cool, crisp days bring out the best colors.

In about 2 weeks it should be really beautiful in central and southern
N.H. I live in Huidson and work in Nashua and I can testify that it's
begun but is no where near being what it could be yet. I am surprised
that the low lying marshy/swampy reagions haven't turned yet. They
usually beat the higher/drier areas by about a week.

Disclaimer: Actually all of the above is just the story we hand oput to
tourists. We just haven't had time to get everyone in the state
together for a weekend and go out and dye (non-toxic foodcoloring only)
all of the leaves in the state to bring in the Fall dollars from
    sightseers. :-)

    Third week in October.
    It's gorgeous every year.

Recommended places: the Lake District, Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Avon
or most bits of wild Scotland.

Those brown palm trees, Roger, will likely *never* turn orange.
Until a good rain washes all the soot off 'em, maybe.

Your best bet right now would be to head up to Vermont.
I was in Stowe in '87 the first weekend in October and
    	it was gorgeous!

The traffic going north on Rte. 495 in Mass. at 4:00 this afternoon was
just about bumper-to-bumper. (It was bumper-to-bumper at the
interchanges -- slowed down, real close bumper-to-bumper; otherwise, it
was spread out, fairly fast moving b-to-b.)
