6.1you won't have Mez to kick around anymore :-)ULTRA::ZURKOThere's a million ways to get things done.Thu Apr 26 1990 15:414
I've been accepted to GEEP. I've been accepted to MIT's Masters' in Industry
program. I start in Sept on my Master's in CS.

As dick nix-on used to say...
6.2Can you keep your DEC acct while you're gone?TLE::D_CARROLLSisters are doin' it for themselvesThu Apr 26 1990 15:5211
Mez,

Congratulations!!!

But...

does that mean you won't be *here* anymore?

I do keep my DEC account; in the Masters' in Industry program, I do my Thesis
back in industry [DEC], though I have an MIT thesis advisor, and I have to
present it and all that stuff.

It does mean I can't actively co-mod come Sept. I'll be taking at least two
courses then (for some reason GEEP doesn't want me to take more than that 1st
semester; they're into risk reduction), and I'm assuming I'll have to pull hard
for two years to get the MS.

It's Graduate Education <something> Program, or something like
that. You take a leave of absense and go to graduate school.

Getting in is very difficult, so I am impressed as well as pleased.

Actually, GEEP is more than a leave of absence to go to school - DEC *pays* for
the school, and pays your full salary and benefits, as well as books and
relocation, etc.

Lust, lust, lust.

*sigh*

I'm really proud of three things:

    1) I've also been accepted to the GEEP (Graduate Engineering Education
Program)! (Congrats, Mez!) I was accepted at all three schools I
applied to and spent this weekend thinking HARD about where to go.
I'll be attending UMass/Amherst for a Masters in Industrial
Engineering, Human Factors specialization (computer user interface
design), starting in September, for two years. Yay!!

    2) I have so far been following my two New Years' resolutions posted
in V2. I feel really good about that!

    3) I'm in a singing group (the Copley Cats) who have been talking about
doing a professionally recorded tape for five years...we went to the
studio and recorded it last week!

For every tough decision and change, there is the resolution after the
storm...the sun appears, the world glistens anew, and the air is fresh!

Doug Bonin, a senior writer in the CUP/Applications & Systems Group

coauthors of the paper are engineers in the Secure Systems Group:

Oh my! Thanx Margaret for mentioning it, and folks for congratting me! I think
I slipped in a mention of it in a reply shortly after the conference, in
the context of another discussion all together.

This following should be in a hot buttons note :-). I was second author; I did
the second most work. The following ordering pisses me off royally:

---->>Paul Karger, Drew Mason, Cliff Kahn, and Mary Ellen Zurko.

It ain't alphabetical; in fact, the first three names _are_ listed in the same
relative order that the title page listed them in. I know that not all papers
order authors by amount of work. Paul did by far the most work, and we all know
we owe most of it to him. But I was _very_ happy to receive the award.

As a friend said "This just proves what we knew all along; SVS looks good on
paper". Ouch!

It's interesting that in scientific/medical papers the most powerful
positions for the listing of authors are first, second and last. I
think this is widely known in medicine, and the position of last is
most often the one belonging to the department head without whose
guidance and direction the research would never have been done.

I don't know if this is also so in engineering.

Yay! Less than 7 weeks after knee surgery I completed a 22 mile bike ride on

recently, i spent an evening in a red-neck bar with two wild

I actually stood up in front of a microphone and spoke in public.

Last night I testified at a public hearing on environmental issues. I
was petrified! I really wanted to not do it. I felt strongly enough
    that I managed.

When I finished, the crowd at the hearing applauded. Seems I had
managed to stutter out something halfway sensible. Astounding.

Now I am hoping that I'll never have to do it again. But if I have to,
I think I'll probably survive. Yipes.

6.43Who's Who North America - Women in American Business - 1990BIGRED::GALETexas? yep, I'm hereSun Jul 29 1990 04:2218
I just got a letter in the mail today, asking for a bio on me, as it
seems I have been nominated (and accepted) for induction into the 1990
Edition of "Women in American Business", the directory of American
businesswoman published by Who's Who North America.

I'm STILL trying to figure out in MY mind who nominated me, (I can send
an official letter requesting the name - which I plan to do), all it
says is that the nomination is by selected nominators, business leaders
themselves, who are allowed to nominate three women each year. The
guidelines they are to use are as follows: "A woman you have come in
contact with in a business situation who you consider to be among the
top 1% of all businesswomen, in terms of professionalism and
    performance on the job."

Anyway... for me, after I got over the shock, I though it equaled an
accomplishment that someone thinks that highly of me...

6.48Change of CustodyCSC32::HADDOCKAll Irk and No PayMon Jul 30 1990 15:4824
The weekend I flew to St. Paul, Mn. to pick up my two children who
were living there. This month I was given custody of three of
my children. The fourth, my oldest son, I've had custody of for
the last 4 years, and my oldest daughter has been living with us
for the last year on a temporary change of custody. This brings
to an end a 9 1/2 year struggle to regain custody. I don't have time
to go into all the gory details right now, but the fight and the
change *was* necessary.

One of the main things I used was that violation of visitation is
also a violation of the children's rights and impairs their emotional
development. My ex is also wanted in Colorado for three counts
of contempt of court and will have to spend 29 days *in jail* if she
ever returns to Colorado (for starters).

I owe a lot to my 15 year old daughter who had the courage to defy
her mother and go into court and tell the judge just what was
*really* going on with her mother. I also owe a lot to my current
wife for standing by me these last eight years, six of them married.
She is also happy about the change.

This is really a little one, but it has made me smile for two days:

When your boss is having some trouble computing from home, and you
suggest that it might be something in his account, and he looks at you
in that really great way and says:

"I think you have a real future in System Management. You seem to

Some of these are entirely legitimate and even useful. On the other
hand, they are published for profit, generated from sales. I get heart
warming "nominations" a couple of times a year, soliciting biographical
details. I'm sure that at least some of these are generated from
membership or targeted mailing lists, not actual nominations. You can
bet that returning the bio will result in a generous offer to let you
buy the volume that features you.

In order to get into the "real" Who's Who's, one has to be nominated by
someone already listed there. The criteria include professional and
extracurricular accomplishments. If you know someone listed there,
s/he would probably inform you that you had been nominated.

I've finally moved into my new house! My old house is rented and I've

They never had a very big one at our townhouse. I wake up to birds and
crickets instead of tracktor-trailer trucks and boom boxes.

After a surprise rejection of my mortgage by the DCU, I thought I'd

This weekend I managed to overcome a life-long fear of heights combined
with a deathly fear of failure, cut through impending panic, and
climb a rock, all the way to the top. I tried last week, and failed
miserably...this week, I psyched myself up, practiced my relaxation

I was still a good person.

My divorce, after 3, almost 4, years of stalling around will be final
sometime in November. But that's not the accomplishment. The
accomplishment is that I've let go of the hurt and anger. It's taken me
a long time but at last it's gone.

I was out riding Saturday and, as I usually do, was thinking on things
great and small when it hit me. I could look back with love and
fondness for the good times and sorrow for the bad times with no taint
of bitterness. I'm glad that even in the times I was hurting I did not
lose myself to revenge in the pain of the moment. I would not have
liked myself much if I had. I could enjoy the beauty of the prairie
grass and the warmth of the sun with no thought that it was ruined for
me because other things had not worked out.

I've often read the following poem in the last few years and finally it
    became real for me. liesl

Last semester at school I had this really horrible teacher. Among his
many horrible habbits, he constantly reffered to women as girls. I put
up with it for the first few classes, but one day he pointed to a
picture of Diane Fossey and referred to her as "the girl on page..."
Well, after class, I gave it to him; I told him how offensive this was,
etc. I didn't think it did any good, but I felt better.

Last night I was talking to a woman and she mentioned that she had him
this semester. I mentioned that I couldn't stand him and mentioned that
I thought he was a sexist pig. She asked me if I was the one who yelled
at him for calling Women girls. She said everytime he starts to say
girl now, he stops himself and says, "I mean *women*..I got yelled at
    for that last semester"

Maybe this goes in the "there's hope yet note" but I' really feel I

I placed this in another notes conference last night - just wanted to
share it here also, since most of you knew of my endeavor...

Well, I knew sooner or later (really I knew yesterday :-)...) that I would
be allowed in a plane all by myself...

So: Here's the important details:

What: Cessna 150 Commuter N11638
When: 8am, 24 October 1990
Weather: Clear, smooth, slight crosswind from the left

How did I feel? Nervous as all get out, I thought my palms would never dry
up!...

Went up this am, did about 4 Touch and go's, Todd fussed at me a little for
diving at the runway at the very end, for lowering the flaps BEFORE I
throttled back to 1600 (oops, I knew better!)... did another simulated
engine out, and got fussed at for not hitting 70 quickly enough, so he had
to add a little power to get me to the runway... but all in all, the 4 were
really pretty good... Todd wasn't in all that great of a mood, so anything
I did do wrong, he was EXTREMELY picky about... He had told me yesterday I
would solo this AM, and I was beginning to wonder, since he wouldn't get
out of the darn plane!...

But 5th time in, he told me to call a full stop... and I knew, damn, I
wish there was some way he could just disappear out of the plane, without
that FULL stop :-)...

It seemed to take FOREVER for him to sign the log book, and the medical
certificate (forever = minutes ticking like HOURS!)... his instruction,
back taxi to 34, radio the back taxi, and radio crosswind, downwind,
base, and final. Two touch and go's and then a full stop, but if I felt
uncomfortable at any touch and go, to go ahead and make a full stop. A
handshake good luck, and off I was sent...

So... Back Taxi'd to 34, and the plane looked more nervous than I did, I
think (centerline, WHAT centerline :-)....)... took off, OOPS, you guys
are right, the plane DOES climb faster without all the CFI weight... I was
SHAKING like a leaf!... Came around, onto final, and I can't seem to get
it to 70 for ANYTHING, so added power did the trick, came in for probably
the HARDEST landing I've ever done, but it wasn't a bounced landing, so I
felt good,, back up, and my heart and soul is screaming... WOW.... I DID
IT!... I actually took it up, and back down again, the second time, the
crosswind and I had words on the landing, but I held it somewhat okay (any
landing that you can fly away from is a good landing?), and the third was
terrific!....

I found myself having to apply power on final with all three, so that's
something to work on...

But... I have been walking on air ALL day... Going up with/without Todd
on Friday morning, and then ALL by myself from start to finish (Todd won't
even be there) Friday after work...

Next stop.... Cross Country to San Antonio....

Thanks to all who have helped me get halfway there...

Also, a computer program I wrote for the Boston Marathon will be used at

All the "pace" and "split time" numbers you see on tv during the race
come through that program.

I should be easy to spot -- following up on an in-joke, I'll be wearing

    EXCELLENT RAINIER SYMPHONY

KENT- The Rainier Symphony opened its 10th anniversary season with a
crisp and enjoyable concert last Saturday in Kentwood High School's
    auditorium...

Saturday's show featured a mix of old, new and less familiar works,
guided under the competent baton of conductor Joseph Pollard White...

The show's highlight is its world premiere of conductor White's
'Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra', featuring soloist Rob Shuster on
    tuba.

White's piece is contemporary in nature, making interesting use of
percussion, of changes in tempo and the unlikely tuba...

The concerto demands a lot of Shuster, but he is largely up to the
challenge. The deep tones of the instrument suggest a certain power. a
certain gaity and yet a certain sadness. It is an interesting and
vibrant work, and makes the evening well worth the price of admission.

    etc.

    Dear .121,

Martin volunteered to work in the Treasury Department for Noreascon
Three. (He also gave a talk about voice synthesis, with DECtalk
samples from the early days on.) We had ordered propeller beanies
as one of our sales items, and they were shipped to us in two
batches. (Meaning: As fast as they could make them, or some such.)

The first batch arrived before the convention actually started, but
not the second one. Since Martin was staying at home, unlike Some
People, and since he knew where the storage depot (a.k.a. Debra's
porch) was, he picked up the (large, clumsy, but lightweight) boxes,
and got them delivered to the right people in the middle of the
Hynes Auditorium in Boston. It was messy. He knew when he agreed
to do it that it would be messy.

I'm glad Martin snarfed up his beanie immediately; they sold like
hotcakes, and there was even a pilferage problem.

Well, I survived Sunday's New York Marathon, running a personal
worst (by 25 minutes) of 4:39:57. This was the hottest weather since
my first marathon at New York, 1984 (the worst marathon weather they had ever
had), so I was extremely cautious, drinking about a gallon of water Friday
and Saturday, and about the same amount on the course. We ran in 70 degree
heat (I heard both 72 and 75), with a light cloud cover, a slight breeze,
and reasonable humidity; all of which helped. Even more helpful was the
immense amount of water on the course: during the last half of the race,
it seemed that there was water every half mile.

I went out at 9:00 pace, which I knew I could hold for a long time, walked
several water stops to make sure I got plenty of water in me, and
hit the half marathon in 2:03 -- right on schedule, or maybe a few
minutes slower than my "fast" limit. Then, a few miles later at the
15 mile mark "hill" (the 59th St. bridge), one knee started hurting,
and I started walking/jogging/limping/stretching until the 20 mile
field hospital, where I stopped for a massage. Then I continued on,
walking when jogging hurt, to the finish.

Since I've been running well under 20 miles/week (though with a number of 10
mile runs, and one hilly half marathon), my only realistic goal was to finish
and I'm quite happy with my accomplishment, such as it was.

Martin.

ps: I also managed a 4-computer network that provided split (intermediate)
times in the press room, using several friends to do the actual work. That,
too, worked perfectly even without my being nearby.

pps: I do not recommend drinking a gallon of water before going to a
Broadway musical.

6.146Justine Sullivan and Dale Hall, in performanceDCL::NANCYBeverything merges with the nightMon Dec 03 1990 05:4538
This is about an accomplishment of 2 members of our
community, Justine Sullivan and Dale Hall.

Saturday night, Justine & Dale performed at Crone's Harvest
in Jamaica Plain to a full-house of approximately 70 women.

The evening started with some informational announcements,
including news of the Dec 18 speaker, Mary Daly. Feminist
comedienne Betsy Salkinds was introduced, and gave a mostly very
humorous 30 minute performance. I say "mostly" because some of
the performance dealt with some pretty heavy topics that (IMO)
were intended more to inspire thought than laughter. My two
favorites were 1) What she said to the man in charge of a pro-
life organization at a demonstration..."You know, if you'd just
quit f*cking us, you wouldn't have this problem!" 2) Something
about mailing used tampons to Chief Justice Rhenquist with
instructions to resuscitate, inseminate, and (save?) the egg.

Ms. Salkinds introduced Justine & Dale to a rousing round of
applause. Dale played the viola (pronounced vee-o-la ;-) in
accompaniment with Justine singing. Some songs Justine sang she
authored, some were written by other artists. All of the songs
told stories, some were humorous, some involved current political
themes. There was one intermission where we were able to mingle
with the performers and other women in the audience, followed by
a parody of Margaret Thatcher by Betsy Salkinds where she
answered questions from the audience speaking as Margaret
Thatcher. Justine Sullivan & Dale Hall performed the 2'nd half
of the performance and ended the evening with an encore to a
          rousing round of applause.

Justine, did anyone ever tell you that you sound like Carly
Simon or is it just my ears ;-)?

               Congratulations, gyns.

6.154sometimes standing up for what you believe in works!DCL::NANCYBTue Mar 12 1991 04:18131
This is about an accomplishment that came about from standing up
for what I thought was right. I almost didn't take the risk, as
I was concerned about the negative repercussions that could
occur. The following is not the most popular subject to discuss
here, but another =wn= encouraged me to enter it, so here goes.

The February, 1991, issue of Guns & Ammo magazine had a column by
Jeff Cooper, an ex-marine who is prone to calling female police
officers "cop-chicks" and saying other derogatory things about
women. In this column, Cooper talked about how self-loading
pistols aren't suitable for women, and how women ("cop-chicks")
weren't suitable for police work. In the **same** issue, Cooper
responded to a female-reader's letter expressing her offense at
similar remarks he made in an _earlier_ column by saying
something like, "I don't know where you got the idea that the
term 'chick' was derogatory", and that he thinks women should
stay out of "the mud, the blood, and the beer".

What annoyed me so much about Cooper's column was that he used
the term "cop-chick" again in the very same issue where he
responded to a woman who expressed her offense at the comments.
To me, it looked like an immature way of saying "in your face",
"I don't care what you think", "I can say what I want", etc..

          I wanted to write G&A a letter, but didn't because I was afraid a
letter against what Cooper said would harm the chances of G&A
some day doing an article about AWARE.

That weekend I was at home doing AWARE stuff on my computer, and
my friend Eileen was doing homework downstairs. The Feb 1991 G&A
was on the coffee table. I suddenly hear a few expletives about
Jeff Cooper and a few other derogatory comments about the NRA,
guns, etc... When I thought about how many other women would
react as Eileen did, I decided to write a letter to the editor of
          G&A. The letter follows:

          =================================================================

          Dear Mr. Bell,

In the February, 1991, "Letters" section of Guns & Ammo, reader
Darrien Michael wrote how comments such as Jeff Cooper's "cop-
chick" would only worsen the problem of women being taken
seriously at gun stores and ranges. In "Cooper's Corner" of the
very same issue, Mr. Cooper displayed his defiance of the words
of Ms. Michael and other women whose opinion she voices. Once
again, Mr. Cooper used the term "cop-chick" to refer to a female
police officer, and suggested, among other things, that self-
loading pistols are not suitable for women, and that women are
          not suitable for police work.

I well understand that Mr. Cooper is of a different generation
and background than I am, and that this has undoubtedly affected
his perceptions of women and their "proper" roles in society.
Changing his mind about women in general or female police
officers in particular is not my goal. I merely wish that he
would not use Guns & Ammo magazine as a place to vent his harmful
          feelings and prejudices.

          Why?
Because Mr. Cooper is alienating the same women that I am working
          very hard to reach.

Last year, I and other women firearms owners in the Boston area
who are concerned about the rate of violent crime against women
founded We are AWARE ==> Arming Women Against Rape and
Endangerment (while) Advancing Women's Armed Rights through
Education*. We are AWARE is a source of information, education,
and support for women interested in learning to use firearms in
self-protection. We offer: presentations to women's
organizations on "Making Informed Decisions about Self-
Protection", basic firearms safety courses geared towards the
needs and concerns of women, Cap-Stun(TM) (chemical aerosol)
training courses, referrals to organizations offering both armed
and unarmed methods of self-defense training, and a quarterly
newsletter which features relevant articles and describes our
          activities and future events.

The biggest obstacles we face are gender-based stereotypes that
have taught many women to needlessly fear or avoid guns. Mr.
          Cooper's use of the highly-circulated and well-respected Guns &
Ammo magazine as a soapbox for his notions about women could ef-
fectively squash the efforts we are making at the grass-roots
level to raise a positive AWAREness among women about firearms.

                                             Sincerely,

                                             Nancy Bittle
                                             President, We are AWARE

                   We are AWARE / P.O. Box 255 / Maynard, MA / 01754.

          =================================================================

I mailed it to Mr. Bell and *many* others on the masthead of G&A.
This is a technique I've used before to get something published
and it has always worked - don't just send your letter to the
          editor to one person, send it to several on the masthead;
someone's is bound to agree with you, even if it's not the head
editor ;-). For all I knew, Mr. Bell might have agreed with
          Cooper!

Anyway, 2 weeks ago I received an express letter from Red Bell
requesting that I call him as soon as possible regarding my
letter. I wasn't sure what to expect. During our phone call, he
said that he was appreciative of my perspective and didn't feel
it was being represented in G&A. He wants me to write articles
for Gun&Ammo !!!!! He never really said much about Cooper; he
just emphasized he'd like to see my perspective in G&A (he
sounded like quite the diplomat ;-). He mentioned that his
women writers try to be so much like "one of the boys" that he
didn't think the woman's perspective was being heard. I told him
I didn't think I would try to be like "one of the boys" ;-).

G&A has a circulation of around 600,000 and an estimated
readership of 4 million. I had to restrain myself from doing
          cartwheels around my office ;)!

Through G&A, I probably won't be reaching the people I'd like
most to reach (women non-gunowners who haven't thought about
personal protection). But hopefully I would be able to reach
those women and men who could *organize* and effectively reach
out to help educate others in their locales.

                                                       psyched,

(Okay, some of it's not crap, but I've decided he's enough of an

Nancy, you might want to send Mr. Cooper a copy of Ayoob's book
on the semiautomatic pistol for police work wherein he proves
that auto-loaders are *superior* for persons of smaller build
    and lesser hand strength.

Background: Some years ago, the FBI was succesfully sued because
their handgun qualification course was geared to the revolver. The
'standard' in the revolver field is the Smith & Wesson medium-frame,
a design which dates back to 1899. This was back when the typical
cop was a strapping big lad (your archtypical Officer Paddy O'Malley.)
Ayoob successfully argued that forcing prospective agents to
qualify with such a gun was discriminatory against women and
smaller-than-white-average minority men. As a result, the FBI
was forced to revise their training.

    Nancy,

Don't be so sure that you won't reach some of the women you are
attempting to. My first exposure to G&A came while sitting in the
waiting room of an ER waiting for results on X-ray's. At that time I
was not a gun owner, nor did I have any interest in shooting. But I
was bored, and it looked more interesting than the two-year-old "Good
Housekeeping" magazines on the table. An article written by a woman
from a woman's perspective certainly would have caught my eye.

I'm officially registered back in school for my B.S. in Comp.Sci.
They didn't accept 25 of my previous credits (72-74 I was working on
a Theatre Arts/Spanish double major, so I didn't expect everything to
transfer over) so I'm now 6 credits short of being a junior. I'll be
taking a 4 hr. written expression exam at Glassboro State in April for
6 freshman english credits (I'd placed out of freshman english via exam
back in 72) and that should take care of my sophmore year. This is
Thomas Edison State College, so they accept CLEP, Portfolio Assessment,
Life Experience (exam or presentation), Telecourses, Videocourses,
Guided Study (through the mail) and Independant Study. I've already
seen 4 other exams I can take for 12 more credits. Even though
my mgr. said it was not a good idea, bad timing, not necessary, I did
    it and I feel terrific!!!

I'm the only one who went directly to college from high school in my
immediate family, was the first grandchild out of 36 on my Mom's side
of the family to go to college. But I left after 2 years and although
I'd taken part time classes here & there, I wasn't really concentrating.

Eduardo (baby brother 34 yrs. old) graduated from Rutgers (part time at
night) two years ago and my parents flew in from P.R. for his
graduation. Now he's going to law school at night. Victor (35 yrs. old)
graduates from Rutgers (part time at night) this june and my parents are
flying in for his graduation. I'm 36 now, but I'll be done by 40
(Class of '94!) and although my Dad won't be here (I fully expect him
to be sitting in a comfy cloud, watching the whole thing!) my Mom
and brothers & sisters-in-law definitely will!

Um, well, I did that Talent Show thing at Buddie's last night, and...
I won ($100 - I didn't know about the cash prize)! People seemed to
really like my stuff. The first song I did is kind of a light, funny
blues song, and people clapped to the beat (more or less, nothing like
playing with a metronome with a few beers in it :-), and when I played
my second political, serious, quiet song; the place got very quiet, and
some folks seemed quite moved. It's pretty hard to get a rowdy,
noisy crowd to quiet down for a serious song, but they did.

I had a great time! Some wonderful DEC friends came to cheer me on
(thank you for coming all the way to Boston at 10:00 pm to hear me do
two songs!!!!), and that felt really nice. After they announced me
as the winner, folks asked (dare I say clamored? :-) for an encore,
so I played another song, and I was joined by "Cher." I've been
invited to come back and perform as a "guest performer", i.e., not a
contestant, at future Talent Nights --- they're going to have it every
Thursday night for the next 7 weeks. If I decide to go back, I'll
    announce it here.

I added a few names to my mailing list and even sold a tape (my first
sale) -- I even signed it! This is very exciting for me.

This is a small one, but I'm feeling pretty good about it:

At last week's "Community Crime Meeting" in Porter Square, AWARE
had a table of fliers and literature. After the meeting, the
head of the Sexual Assault Investigative Team for the Cambridge PD
said to Lyn that he had picked up some of our literature and
** learned a couple things ** from it.

Also, I'm glad I took the Cambridge Chief of Police to task at
the microphone (during a Q&A session) about the "we don't give
permits to broads" comment to a woman in Cambridge. He tried
to get away with, "but I'll give FIDs to any woman who wants to
carry Mace" and I interrupted him with:
"which you _know_ is ineffective on someone who's drunk, on drugs,
insensitive to pain, or in a highly emotional state", and
    	he said, "yes, that's right". !!! I couldn't believe it !!
Here he was talking about women carrying Mace and he **knew**
it frequently doesn't work !! I think the audience of 361 was
    	very surprised to hear that.

for Vice President for the upcoming year, but turned it down because
I didn't have the time needed to do all that the job consists of.
I did accept their offer to run for Treasurer and will be installed
    on May 1st.

I will be recognized at the National level in June for completing
the Effective Speaking Program and Focus on Women. (The National
Convention is being held June 13 - 16 in Natick)

After Roberta's note, mine hardly seems much but...

I worked all day in the garden Saturday and Sunday, one whole day
spent whacking out a stump where I wanted to plant flowers. I felt
strong (if exhausted), tenacious (maybe -- stubborn), but most
of all, I felt like my body belongs to me again. I'd been so ill
for so long and now I feel powerful again. Yippie!

And then I planted flowers. Guess what, my eyes and nose work pretty
    good, too.

Yes, after n years in Edu, I received my promotion to Instructor III,
effective June 17. For those of you who have been here, it sometimes
feels like it will never happen if you were hired in as an OA person,
and as a woman, you started a job level lower than your counterparts in
training to begin with, and (I wish it wasn't still true) have to work

But it is nice to get the recognition. Certainly would have been nice

    my piece so far!

        THE DAY I'LL BE BORN
    by DanielS. Katz (1991)

	He will not see me
	sitting in the back pew;
	He will be dead,

	but I will be there,
	in gaudy, flowered shirt
	and brushed jazz shoes,

to stand over his open casket
and poke his waxed, rouged cheek,
	leave a deep thumbprint --

not as deep as the mark
	he burned into me.
	The scar still itches.

I've a knack for the macabre,
	my blue black skin
	under layers of pink,

	glimpses of me
	underneath
	the mask --

	a shard of bone,
	a fingernail
	or a shy smile.

	Do I look so different?
	My wide, glistening eyes
	and heaving chest

	will calm soon.
	You can touch me
	and I will not flinch.

	I will smile for you,
	broad curl of the lie,
and you will not know the difference.

It is a game we play,
	the same smile I wore,
	the same eyes,

	until they are knocked out
	into the purple night
	and I am left here,

	blank face, blank stare.
	I have acted his play
	and want to dance,

	feel the soft, packed earth
	under my heel and kick
	the fresh-carved stone,

shout our names into the night,
	link arms and whirl
	across the new grave;

	We will dance outward then,
	spinning ourselves from shade
	and into warm sunlight.

I'm playing the part of Officer Krupke in "West Side Story" in a summer
stock group, Stage One, in Manchester. The play will be at the
Palace Theater in Manchester, NH, the next couple of weekends. I am
completely in awe of the other actors (is that term unisex these days?)
with speaking parts, as they are all experienced pro's, mostly from
NYC. And I was feeling rather inadequate. But last night the director
said my main scene worked and he didn't have any changes to suggest
so I feel really great today. I do not aspire to become an actor, but
I have a lot of fun doing it and certainly don't want to mess up the
play for the others. Even though I only have 9 lines, I deliver the
first scripted line of the play and I'm center stage as the curtains
    close, so it's exciting.

This Sunday night I'm going to be on the radio!!!!!!! I'll be on
WEVO (New Hampshire Public Radio) from 7:00 to about 7:30.
Holly Hendricks (a fellow DECcie and Womannoter) is one of the hosts
on the weekend folk show, and she's invited me to be her guest!

She'll play some things from my demo tape, ask me some probing
questions :-), and have me play a couple things live. This is very
exciting for me. If you live in New Hampshire (probably Northern Mass.
can get it, too), I'd love it if you would tune in and send me some
    support over the airwaves.

It's 89.1 FM in Concord/Manchester. It can sometimes be pulled in from
northern Mass. People in the Keene area can sometimes get it on 89.5,
but it's not a very strong transmitter. 89.1 is the strong one.

Holly is one of several hosts on the folk show on WEVO every Saturday from
7-11 and every Sunday from 6-10.

ADMIRAL HOPPER AWARDED THE NATIONAL MEDAL OF TECHNOLOGY

WASHINGTON, DC -- September 16, 1991 -- President George Bush today
awarded The National Medal Of Technology to Rear Admiral Grace
Murray Hopper (USNR Retired).
Admiral Hopper, a senior consultant at Digital Equipment
Corporation, is the first woman to receive America's highest
technology award as an individual. The award recognizes her as a
computer pioneer, who spent a half century helping keep America on
the leading edge of high technology.
Jill S. Baylor, the president of the Society of Women
Engineers who nominated the admiral, accepted the award on her
behalf in a Rose Garden Ceremony. The 84-year-old Admiral was
unable to attend the ceremony.
Admiral Hopper was one of 18 individuals to receive the 1991
National Medal of Technology, which is administered by the U.S.
Department of Commerce's Technology Administration. The award has
been presented annually since 1985 and reflects contributions to
the economy, environment or social well-being of the United States.
Admiral Hopper retired in 1986 as the U.S. Navy's oldest
officer on active duty and began a new career at age 79 at Digital
Equipment Corporation. Her retirement ceremony took place aboard
the USS Constitution, the Navy's oldest commissioned war ship.

Until recently, Admiral Hopper had been actively representing
Digital at computer industry forums, making presentations on
advanced computing concepts and the value of information and data,
and serving as a corporation liaison with educational institutions.
At the time of her retirement from the Navy, Admiral Hopper
was assigned to the Naval Data Automation Command in Washington,
D.C. Much of her military service was devoted to keeping the Navy
on the leading edge of computer technology.
Admiral Hopper was born Grace Brewster Murray on December 9,
1906 in New York City. She began summering in Wolfeboro, N.H., with
her family in 1907 and regards the town on the shores of Lake
Winnipesaukee as her second home.
She is a 1928 graduate of Vassar College with Phi Beta Kappa
and a Vassar College Fellowship. She continued her education at
Yale University where she earned an MA in 1930, and PhD in 1934,
together with election to Sigma Xi and two Sterling Scholarships.
She also attended New York University as a Vassar Faculty Fellow in
1941.
In December 1943 she was sworn in and in May 1944, she joined
the United States Naval Reserve and attended the USNR Midshipman
School (W). After graduation she was commissioned a Lieutenant (JG)
and ordered to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at
Harvard where she learned to program computers. In 1946, she was
returned to inactive duty, but she continued to serve in the Naval
Reserve and rose through the ranks retiring in December 1966 with
the rank of Commander.

In August 1967, she was recalled to active duty, rose through
the ranks, and was appointed on November 8, 1883 as Commodore. The
title of that grade was changed to Rear Admiral on November 8,
1985.
During her career Admiral Hopper has taught at several
colleges and universities, including Vassar, Barnard, Harvard,
University of Pennsylvania and George Washington University. She
also worked as a senior mathematician at Eckert-Mauchly Computer
Corporation in Philadelphia and helped program the UNIVAC I, the
first commercial large-scale electronic computer. She remained with
the company when it was bought by Remmington Rand and later merged
with Sperry Corporation.
At her retirement ceremony from the Navy, then Navy Secretary
John F. Lehmann Jr presented Admiral Hopper with the Distinguished
Service Medal. More than 40 colleges and universities have
conferred honorary degrees on Admiral Hopper, and she has been
honored by her peers on several occasions. She was the recipient of
the first Computer Sciences "Man of the Year" award. Her entry in
"Who's Who" takes 34 lines to thumbnail her accomplishments,
appointments and honors.

On learning to see things in a new way:

I need to order wood for my woodpile, so decided to measure how much I
have left from last winter. I also needed to restack my two small piles
into one larger one. When I uncovered the pile, I discovered snake
skins and panicked. Before calling my "unwanted animal remover" (I do
her spiders, she does my mice), I talked to a friend about it, and got
some tips. Yesterday, I approached my woodpile again, said in a loud
voice "Snakes, get out of my woodpile" and set to work slowly,
carefully lifting each piece of wood to be moved.

I didn't see any snakes, but did collect quite a few skins.

And then I ran inside and called my friend and announced that I'd moved
the wood. She told me that in Native American cultures, snakeskins are
highly valued. It turns out that it's painful for a snake to remove its
skin, but also necessary -- the snake "grows out" of its former size
and needs new skin. It rubs against something rough (hence the
woodpile) in order to free itself. This is so symbolic for me; in the
last few weeks, I've been letting go (more) of past constraints and old
pain. I've been acquiring "new skin" with which to face the winter. And
I now have a snake skin as a trophy and as a reminder.

> But, what's an herb beer? Sounds kind of funny. And what kind of herbs
> did you use?

Well, as many a homebrewer, and many a cook has discovered, you just never
know what may suggest itself to you as an interesting ingredient while you're
whipping something up. In this case, our beer was modified by the addition of
honey, grated ginger root, and stick cinnamon, to the wort. Just about any
spices will result in a beer you could categorize as an herb beer. We called
that one "Gingersnap!"

Beers can use other plants than hops as flavourings. Ones used
in the past are nettles, rosemary, alecost (costmary), gruit (a mixture
of herbs) and even ground ivy. Once the hop became established
though, use of other flavours/preservatives declined.

'Mock beers' are also made using Apple, Beetroot, Bran, Cherry
Dandelions, Elderflower, Ginger, Honey and on and on....

    Just to rathole this further:

Horehound has also been used in the past as well. The first beers
brewed in north America were "Spruce Beers", since there were no
hops at that time here. The young tips of the spruce tree were used as
    the bittering agents.

Way to go D!!! I want my own copy! Which Harvard
Square bookstores carry _Bad Attitide_ ?
	(any near the T?)

None, as far as I know. The only three places I have *ever* seen it
for sale were New Words in Inman Sq (unfortunately far from the T, but
usually no problem parking), and Little Shop of Horrors and Glad Day
    Books, both in Copley Sq.

A lot of people have asked me where they can get a copy, so I'm going
to go ahead and post the address, but first a disclaimer...

_Bad_Attitude_ is a Lesbian SM 'zine. That's SM as in sadomasochism,
and they make no bones about it. It's not heavy SM (at least as far as
what's out there). The pictures (not very many, all black and white)
are tame - a few are sexually graphic, almost none are SM-ly graphic.
The stories range from vanilla but outrageous to heavy bondage to
almost-rape scenes to intense master-slave situations. The magazine
caters to Lesbians *into* SM, rather than the casual browser who wants
to learn something about the subject - so it makes basic assumptions
about what the audience understands. The basic assumptions include,
among others, and understanding that the stories are *fantasies* and do
not represent anyone's actual desires, necessarily; that all *real* SM
is consensual; that a lot of women like reading about things that bear
little relation to reality; and it assumes a basic "vocabulary" - that
is, common themes (such as master-slave, "daddy"-"boy", etc).
_Bad_Attitude_ is not a good place to learn about SM - if you want to
do that, I have suggestions, write me. Sort of like, if you are
starting to learn about physics, first you learn about straight-forward
Newtonian physics. Only after you have a firm grasp on that do you try
to learn the twist of Einsteinian physics - starting with BA is like
    staring with relativity.

Anyway, my point is, if you can't handle 1) sex between women that not
only doesn't involve men, but to which men are completely and totally
irrelevent and 2) fairly graphic stories about SM, don't read it.

That all said, if you want to order a copy, here's the address:

    Bad Attitude
    PO Box 110
    Cambridge, MA 02139

Back issues are $5, my story appears in Vol VII, Number III.

Subscriptions, if you are so inclined :-) are 6 issues for $24.

    Enjoy!!!

I just got through taping a segment for the local cable TV show, Focus,
on NOW. It went really well!

This is a significant achievement for me, since the last time I was on
TV I froze, and it was live. Four seconds of pure hell. Maybe the
Focus taping will eradicate that experience from my memory bank.

Also, I'm going to be speaking at Boston College next month to a

I've read the story D! published in Bad Attitude, and I'm impressed.
Lesbianism isn't my thing, but that doesn't matter here -- what I'm
getting at is that D!'s story is as good as anything else in the mag,
and better than most. Nice mood setting. I thought it was too short,
but that's the frustrated author in me, and D! explained why it was
that short.

Well done, D!! (That s D! with an exclamation point, you see...)
