         The Passing of Friends

         ---

You know, I have a favorite poem. It's by Robert
         Frost...

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
and sorry I could not travel both
         	and be one traveler
long I stood and looked down one
as far as I could to where it bent
         	in the undergrowth,
then took the other as just as fair
though having perhaps the better claim
for it was grassy and wanted wear...

Well, I won't bore you with the whole thing, but I was
thinking of it today because I was thinking about what
life would be like without Steve Mallett to call up on
the DTN when I needed a smile, or a verbal kick in the
ass, or silence on the other end.

Yes, yes, I know I have his home phone number. And I
know that I will see him as much [probably more,
actually] then I saw him when he worked here. I know all
         that.

But my heart aches none-the-less for knowing it. And I
will miss you 'Spider' on the net and on my answer phone
and from my messages from the secretary to call Steve
'Mallard'...[some battles are not worth fighting...]

I will miss your candor and humor, your pain, your
insights...even your pithy rejoinders...[well, maybe not
so much those....{grin}], and I will miss my best friend
who had the balls to tell me when he thought I was being
an ass. There is nothing so precious as a friend who
loves you too much to lie.

So, anyway...I was feeling sorry for myself today, because I
was going to miss you. And then I remembered my favorite
         poem...it ends:

Oh, I saved the the other for another day,
yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted that I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this somewhere
         	ages and ages hence.
Two roads diverged in a wood and I,
I took the one less traveled by
and that has made all the difference.

And, I realized that I could not wish you anything but
luck and love and the courage to walk your own 'less
         traveled' ways.

         Peace, my friend.

         Melinda

    Friends
    -------

    Friends remain, always
Like mountains, like the wind in winter
    Lingering, noteless, hesitant
    Whispering rumors of sunshine
    And summer
    And dreams of dawn.

    Friends remain, always
As if the flickers of truth one finds in books
    Could fill the need temporal
But the remainder of the tomes
    Sit, unsplayed, on shelves
    With others similarly shut
    Constant and waiting.

    Friends remain, always
Like a flower, come to rest
    Hastily pressed
    In heavily bound pages
    To be recalled as if
The ghost of occasion had been saved
With the pale petals and now-fragile leaves
    Of long ago.

    Friends remain, always
Memorable, like the taste of rain
The shimmer of first rainbows dancing
    Of spring's turning back
    The white-velvet coverlet of winter
As if she had never left
    Just slept, alone, aloof
    In vivid dreams of renaissance
    And return
    And renewal
    Friends remain, always.

Thank you so, my good and dear friend, Melinda; I am so very
honored. And I cannot conceive of a greater, more cherished
gift than the loving care of such a friend whom I so greatly
admire. I will truly miss the fellowship and community of
NOTES precisely because of people like you. Most especially
    I'll miss Womannotes.

Thank you, Mel, Maggie and all of you who've sent such kind wishes.
May the god of your understanding bless you and all the wonderful
people I've come to know here with serenity, courage, wisdom, and joy.

a friend is always welcome, as the sunshine or a song
but mostly when the tide has turned and everything goes wrong
when castles seem to crumble and our dreams would fall apart
in desperate moments of regret and loneliness of heart
the friend who still is true to us, however dark our shame
who would not even be the last, to criticize or blame
but who would comfort and console and struggle day and night
in every way in our behalf, to help us in our plight
who still is faithful when it seems our bridges have been burned
the friend who backs us up, when all.....the other backs are
	turned.

	--Unknown

I won't say goodbye to Steve because he'll always be a part
of my life. We may not be connected by computer anymore, but
he'll still be an ever-present force in my life.

	Best wishes my friend.

Steve,

Take care. I'm sure I'll see you around. If not, I'm sure I'll see
you playing at Grate Woods sometime. Hey, I heard the Grateful Dead
were looking for a new guitar player ;-)

	Date: Friday, July 27, 1990

	Time: 7ish - 11ish

Place: the pleasant, relaxing, cozy, intimate environment
of David Wittenberg's abode in Hudson, MA.

I also like Lorna's idea of a Friday party and dinner
	earlier that week.

re: Bonnie and Lorna and "sharing"

	(scolding voice)
Now I _know_ that both of you know my opinions on
"sharing" as you spoke of it, and how contrary it
is to your representation of them!

And Bonnie, I am well-aware of the definition of
"polyandry" -- that's what I meant!! (that was
what Margaret meant too, as her suggestion to the
	dilemma presented ;-)
( but polyandry is not in my AHD, while polygamy and
