Hi everybody, In a mad moment of spring and Friday afternoon I've
made reservations and decided to come to visit you all. I'll be
staying with Joyce (thankyouthankyouthankyou Joyce). And I can't
wait to meet everybody. I AM SO PSYCHED OVER THIS!
I'll be completely shy at first and totally rowdy once I know you.
You may need some time to recover after us mountain mammas get
done partying. And the altitude's in my favor, I'll be getting
high on the extra oxygen. liesl

Don't believe her.....leisl? shy? I seem to remember a

me to be rowdy. We saved that for our trip to Medieval manner later on.
I promise to try and maintain a low roar at the party. Of course with Steve M
and Mel provding music I may end up singing (you don't have to be good at it
to be allowed do you?){
And as for ME being rowdy Kathy, we won't even mention when Steve and Joe
couldn't catch you on the way down. ;*) liesl

guitar and practice. I felt really frustrated at the recent =wn=

chords couldn't remember any lyrics. But, then, with Steve and Mel,
there wasn't much slack to take up. :-)

I was out there I drank a 6-pack, and barely got a buzz. And I'm

As for Leisl, I've seen her be shy and withdrawn. Maybe she should

| Um, Eagles, I think there is a fairly obvious reason why parties
are all womannoters or Humanrelations types...with a sprinkling
of Friends perhaps...Those are the notes files that sponsor parities!
I suspect that if someone was to volunteer his or her place
and announce the party in the various files like soapbox and
carbuffs and moans etc. that you would get quite a noter turn out...
tho very likely not of the folks that go to =wn= and H_R parties.
In general the one all noter party I went to struck me as too heavy
on the drinking and too light on the conversation...the reverse
of most =wn= and h_r parties.

I take EXTREME exception to this statement! I have never gone for the clique
scene and I never intend to...the party was announced and anyone can come!
Everyone will be welcome there and we'll have a great time!
If you wish not to come to the party that is YOUR decision and your decision
alone...but don't say that you weren't welcome there...you have no one to
blame but yourself if you feel that way. Whether read-only or not, i've never
heard ANYWHERE in this note that people are not welcome....If someone
gets that impression it definately come from inside them, not from
anyone here.
kath
BTW: there *IS* a MOANS luncheon on Sunday the 8th in Marloro. Anyone is
welcome to come...the invite is in MOANS. (Can you stand meeting me at
two parties????) :-)

> there used to be a common file ? DELNI::NETPARTY.Note ?
> .. and for whatever it's worth we agree that file-specific clan
> gatherings serve a useful purpose for that particular group.
Eagles, as you well know, Mike Foley started that file and
it was discontinued when he moved jobs and didn't have the
computer space for it or the interest or what ever any more.
Anyone with a problem about the loss of delni::netparty can
either write to Mike and brainstorm about ideas to open such
a file up again and/or start such a file themselves.
Steve, I don't think you meant it that way, but your note came
over like you were some how blaming =wn= and h_r noters for
the death of the older parties that you knew. It is true that
it is a different group of people that gather for these parties
and it is often that many of the same group of people are on
the party list. But I don't think there is a problem with
that. The reason we all go to the parties is that we are friends
or have a common interest in similar things or want to get so
know people we only know from node::name. Is that so much different
from the first notes parties? Yes, it is a different group of people
but we are not deliberately exlusive, infact at =wn= parties we
make a concerted moderator and member effort to be sure we talk with new
people. Somehow, I kinda doubt that happened at the early noters
parties...except perhaps to see if this 'new person' had a 'rep'
in the file. (and I say this from what I gather of other old
noters, not as a critcism of you and your warm friendliness to
this person as a new noter.)
> However when read-only noters or those who read/write mainly
> in work-related conferences tend to feel slightly uninvited,
> clearly the desirable social interaction among digits is lost.
um, eagles, how do you suggest that the =wn= and the h_r crowd
deal with this issue? We have no way of reaching out to those
who only write in work-related conferences. Nor do I feel any
responsibility to same. and in re 'read only' we almost always
have 4 or 5 'read onlies' minimum at =wn= events, and some of
them keep coming back..other than that I, as a moderator, have
no other answers...people have to reach out on their own, I do
try very hard to talk to and befreind new people..but none
of us are superwoman/man in re parties. I went to my first noters
party scared and nervous and made friends that night. I can only
encourage others to do the same.
and really what does =wn= notes owe to "real Noters (mostly males)
[who] never read Womannotes...and ....[the] really nice people
who work for digital [who] just find the Human Relations conference
to be...."
We have parties for the people who read our file, H_R (primarily
Steve Lionel at this point) sponsors parties for those who read that
file. Kristy Gleason sponsors parties for the Friends file. Meigs
Glidewell sponsored a party that she announced in this file for
displaced midwesterners. I am sponsoring a birding trip for those who
follow upnrth::wild_birds. Are you honestly saying that any of those
people owe anything to the vast noters audience that does not follow
Birds, or Friends, or Womannotes, or Human_Relations, or Parenting
or Feline or Canine (to mention other files that have parties.)
For heavens sake, if you want another 'general noters party' contact
someone who has sponsored one before, or put a note in soapbox looking
for a place...but don't write notes complaining that =wn= and h_r parties
have become an exclusive clique...we aren't ....but we do attract
particular types of people...and those that liked the older semi alcoholic
noters bashes will be as uncomfortable at a =wn= party as I would be
at a car buffs party.
Bonnie
> Do you have your secret map to the gathering-of-the-faithful ?
> Will you be spared having to "interact" with any of "them" ???
What do you meant by this? I keep a list of those who come to =wn=
parties and send them mail when there is a new party...does
that make it a list or map of the 'faithful'? I really don't
understand what you meant by this, could you explain?

| Speaking as one who attended the *first* "official" Noters Party...
There's a good reason why there's no general Noters parties these
days. The Net in general, and the Notes community specifically
have just gotten too damn *big*.
The first official Noters Party was organized and announced in
TRIVIA (it may have also been announced in another notesfile or
two) at a time when a significantly large portion of the Notes
community participated in TRIVIA.
Over the course of the next couple of years, the parties got larger
and larger, as the community got larger and larger. The last =wn=
party had an attendence that was equal to or greater than that
first Noters Party.
Just because there's a narrower focus for the attendence list doesn't
mean that it's a clique.

Eagles, this is getting a bit out-of-hand. I resent your
implication that those who 'note in work related' conferences have
been left out and that the rest of us aren't working. Hmm, it
seems to me that I've known Steve Lionel, Mike Foley, Bob Holt,
DougO, Suzanne Conlon and a few others as much in VMSNOTES as in
=wn= or H_R. All of us have been known (especially Steve and Mike)
to write many helpful work related notes. Suzanne has forgotten
more about clusters than most of us know. Most of us also note in
many work related conferences.( especially the notes_bugs
conference ;*)). I moderate 4 CSC work related conferences in
addition to the 10 work related ones I read every day and the 15
or so that I use occasionally. I suspect most of the moderators
wouldn't care to have to deal with party notes.
It seems to me (IMHO) that you are just feeling sorry for
yourself. If I had thought this was a clique only party I'd hardly
have thrown caution to the winds and considered jumping on a plane
to go stay with someone I've never met (who offered her place
without ever having met me). You are creating your own heartache
and can change soothe it if you want to. liesl

| In stating that =wn= and H_R parties are cliquish I wonder if the
complainer is really saying that in order to receive directions
one must sign in and therefore commit to being there. When they
in fact would like to be an unexpected guest.
The folks that have opened their homes to these parties have been
extremely generous. They work hard to be good hosts or hostesses
and they plan their parties in such a way that they continue to
be good neighbors.
I am looking forward to a good time on May 5th as I have had at
other parties. If you want to go but do not want your name on a
public list just send a mail message to Steve and he will be glad
to include you in the mailing of directions without putting you

528.37 | | QUARK::LIONEL | The dream is alive | Sun Apr 30 1989 14:33 | 16 |
| Joyce is right - the reason we ask people to sign up is so that we
have SOME idea of how many people are coming. I don't see anything
wrong with this. Anyway, if this is a clique, it's a darned large
one!
One thing I'm pleased to see is that it's NOT the same group
every time. Yes, there are a few regulars, but the number of people
signed up who haven't been to the past parties is larger than the
number who have.
Personally, I dislike the larger parties, especially the ones at
restaurants, as you just don't get a chance to meet and talk
with everyone. But that's me, and I don't insist everyone feel the
same way.

Steve EVEN at the womannotes party, some of them get to be so large
that you can't meet and talk with everyone. I don't think that the large
party that you are having is any different than the ones Kristy had
at Chopsticks. I'd hate to see a comparison wrongly made. If there
is a difference, its that its cheaper to have one at a house, and
a terminal is available for over-the-pond type noters...

| Re: .38
Well, Gale, I did say that it was just my personal preference. I have
had no problems getting to talk to everyone at the =wn= parties I
have attended. At the last party that both you and I were at, you
only stayed for a short time, under an hour I think. Perhaps that may
have influenced your feelings on the matter.
It's just my observation that at the "restaurant parties" I have
attended, and I admit it's not many, most people stayed seated at
their tables and that there was limited mingling. Perhaps you've seen
others that were different.
In no way was I trying to make a value judgement, I'm sorry if you
read one into my words.
As for the subject of terminals at parties, well... I've never quite
seen the point of that. To me, the idea of noters parties is for the
noters to get together and interact face-to-face. To have them show
up and then sit around a terminal all night (slight exaggeration here)
is not my idea of a good time. After all, we talk over the net to
people all the time. I understand how the folks from far away would
like to feel included, and perhaps something can be done, but I've
seen such activities just take over at parties and it seems to me to
put a damper on the socializing.
What I enjoy about the =wn= and H_R parties I have attended (as well
as the one in Colorado earlier in the month) is that people shift
around and engage in conversations with different folks, and don't tend
to stay in the same tight circle all night. And I hope to encourage
that this Friday.

Seeing that true Winter is is really in the dead of January, and by that
time most of us will be needing a lift from being worn out from
Christmas shopping (those that still have some left to do that is)
The WINTER Human Relations Party is booked for the 27th of January,
from 2pm to Midnight(ish) at the Shrewsbury Commons Clubhouse,
Shrewsbury, Mass.
Since they asked for (and recieved :-)) a LARGE damage deposit, we have
to be neat that night :-)... Smoking will be outside, and there are no
cats :-)
This also gives the Colorado crew that wants to come three months
notice for savings, and my house will be open to any that would like to
stay over for that evening.
