712.0. "Nov 12 Pro-Choice Rally in Washington" by PROSE::BLACHEK () Tue Jul 25 1989 19:10

There will be a pro-choice demonstration on Sunday, November 12, in
Washington D.C. This is Veteran's Day weekend, so perhaps some sites
have that day off. Or maybe your kids will if you want to take them.

I have heard that it might be just a demonstration, no marching in the
streets. I'm sorry I don't know the specifics yet, but when I do I'll
post them here. (Unless someone beats me to it.)

However, the date is now firm, for those of you who want to make
    reservations.

I'll be there! I'll be organizing buses from NH and will put in the
    details as we get them.

The goal is a million people--let's start our count!

712.4Mobilization Details from National NOWPROSE::BLACHEKTue Sep 19 1989 18:5822
Here are some details about the Mobilization for Women's Lives:

The mobilization will be held at the Lincoln Memorial, from noon to
4:30 on Sunday, November 12. It will not include a march.

On Monday, November 13 there will be a lobby day to contact your state
    legislators.

Any group of 20 or more can be classified as a delegation. All
delegations must register with the Mobilization office no later than
    October 20, 1989 by calling (202) 331-0066.

Special seating is available for the differently abled. There will be
    signers for the hearing impaired.

There is no special request to wear white. But as usual, the colors of
white, purple, and gold will be used on the banners. You can't go
    wrong with those colors!

    See you there--in the crowd!

712.5Buses from NHPROSE::BLACHEKTue Sep 19 1989 19:0112
NH NOW is sponsoring buses that will leave from three different NH
cities. You can board the bus at Manchester, Portsmouth, or Hanover.
The buses will leave on Saturday evening, on November 11 and will get
into DC early Sunday morning. The buses will leave DC after the
mobilization and get back into NH in the early hours of Monday morning.

The buses will cost $55 a person. If you are interested in a flier for
the buses, please send me mail.

    Thanks!

Well, as long as its safe to jump in the water ....

Boston NOW will be having a Mobilization/Rally organizers meeting this
Thursday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m. It will be held at 100 Arlington
Street, which I have it on good authority is right next to the
Arlington "T" stop. These meetings will be held every Thursday evening
    from now until November.

The purpose is to find people willing to help out in calling other NOW
members, distributing leaflets, helping organize transportation, form
political action committees ... you name it. We explain what it is
we're doing and help you decide how you'd like to help out.

If Boston's too far away, the Worcester NOW chapter meets every Tuesday
evening at 7:00 pm in the Worcester YWCA (ask at the desk, as we tend
to float). These tend to be more "workie" type get togethers.

Just fyi - according to my calendar, this conflicts with Gloria
Steinem's speech "Democracy and Feminism in the 90's" on Thursday,
Sept 21, at 8pm at Clark University's Atwood Hall.

Oooh - NOW meetings where you "float" at the YWCA at "workie" type get
togethers :-) ? That sounds like fun!

How did =wn=ers stay in touch and organized during the march in April?

Did many people stay in the same place? Are there any such plans for

712.35Let's brainstorm!SYSENG::BITTLENancy Bittle - hardware engineer; LSETue Oct 03 1989 16:0515
What are some ways we could effectively get across our message
{my interpretation of which is 'abortion should be safe, legal,
and funded'} at the rally, in addition to a banner and chants ?

	Remember,
         * brainstorming means no idea is dismissed as dumb or unreason-
able; analysis takes places after all ideas are received
         * the more visual, the more effectively your message will
carry in a rally-type situation given today's media
(recent example - the protesters of MA cuts in mental
health funding carried caskets at the State House last
week creating a very effective message for both the Boston
Glob and the local newscasts to carry)

  Northern California and Beyond...

                   PRO-CHOICE MARCH AND RALLY
TO PROTECT WOMEN'S RIGHTS & SAVE WOMEN'S LIVES

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1989, San Francisco, CA
Sponsored by NOW and Bay Area Pro-Choice Coalition
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

We did it again. We took to the streets of San Francisco yesterday, for
an assembly, a march, and a closing rally...to gather our strength, to show
it, and to make our statement. This was the first big rally in California
since the Webster decision was announced. Last April 2nd, SF marched with
some 25,000 people. Yesterday, some 60,000 people joined us! It was huge!

As before, (see 325.217) we assembled from 11AM onwards in Justin Herman Plaza
at the Embarcadero end of Market Street. This time, they had an official
march count sign-up sheet, and we were continuously urged to be sure to get
signed in. Many organizations had buttons or tshirts or bumper stickers to
sell, and lots of leaflets were flying around. The line ups included college
groups, political groups, women's organizations, gay and lesbian groups,
educators, health-care providers, clinic defense groups...many others, I can't
recall them all! We stepped off around noon.

Due to construction on Market, we detoured up Pine for several blocks, then
turned back towards Market along Kearney. This was novel, because Pine goes
between many big tall office buildings and the noise was tremendous. It was
fantastic shouting our chants in that echo chamber! It became a little tough
just before we turned onto Kearney because Pine starts climbing (this *is* SF)
and it was harder on our elderly marchers, and those pushing strollers, etc.
Getting back to Market was only a mixed blessing, because with that many people
in the street, you can't see very far in front of you and the trolley tracks,
potholes, street gratings, manhole covers, and curbs were treacherous.

The signs seemed to me to be much more varied this time; many, many individual
efforts. (I'm drawing a blank on the words, sorry.) The Clinic Defense group
had a huge multi-section placard which was most impressive. My voice quit
about two-thirds of the way along the route, and mine wasn't the only one; but
we had lots of help and the noise and energy levels were maintained. I was in
the NOW section, more or less staying within sight of the Palo Alto banner the
whole trip. We got to the Civic Center Plaza about 1:15...passing donation
collection points and a row of porta-pottys (18 or 19; lines looked to be
about 4 or 5 deep at that time.)  The weather was cooperative most of the day;
mostly sunny, an occaisional cloud, intermittent breeze; until around 3, when
the clouds stayed and it got chilly. The Civic Center Plaza was lined with
groups collecting petition signatures, selling shirts and buttons and stickers,
and with some food available at the back end.

Our speakers included California Representatives to the US House of
Representatives Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi, both instrumental in
defeating the Hyde Amendment and finally getting last week's funding
bill (to fund abortions for pregnant victims of rape and incest) passed
after 10 years of defeats.  They told us that the House is waking up;
that the groundswell of support raining into their mailboxes since Webster
has shocked many of the complacent members. They warned us, though, that
our opponents will work to defeat Pro-Choice members and candidates through
means direct and indirect; we *must* make certain that our Pro-Choice
legislators *know* that they have our support. The politics of this fight
are going to be long and probably dirty; make your views KNOWN to your reps!

Other speakers included the Lieutenant Governor of California, the State
Attourney General, former SF mayor and now gubernatorial candidate Diane
Feinstein, Norma M(?) (sorry I can't spell it; she is also known as Jane
Roe), Pat Norman, and a host of others; teachers, labor leaders, Hollywood
activists, city and state elected officials, leaders from NOW and Planned
Parenthood and coalitions statewide, the son of Alan Cranston (who read a
statement from his father), and many others.

We had some musical entertainment from a group known as The Ultras, and an
educational presentation (!) from Fat Chance Belly Dance, which was well
received...as well as something I won't even pretend I understood, which
seemed to be about armed women fighting in Mexico 75 years ago, alongside
men, done to martial music, with dance, rifles, and costumes. As an
alternate to the speeches the entertainment was needed...though unusual.

Local TV coverage slotted the story 2nd (behind the Bay Area World Series
Game 2 as lead) or 3rd (behind the Series and the Tokyo Stock Market report).
Coverage was mostly favorable, though one station gave OR the chance to
comment, despite the fact that the Pro-Lifers didn't even show up to oppose
us this time. Balancing that, they pointedly mentioned that early police
estimates of 30,000 were never raised, and reported that the organizer's
count was 60,000. Hopefully they'll report it when the signatures are
counted. They did include numerous camera angles of the gathering filling
the Civic Center Plaza, from very high up; fewer street scenes than I'd
have wanted, but a couple.

OK, folks. The political battle lines are being drawn in the states and
at the national level. Rallies were held last week in Florida, and in
several other states on Sunday (though Trenton is the only one CNN covered).
I think Los Angeles is next week; and I know DC on November 12th is less than
four weeks away. Do what you gotta do. Hope to see you in DC...

So, I assume it's the same this time as it was last time -- find
a facilitator and ask where they've put us on the grid.

And hey! My 74 year-old mother is going to overcome her fear of
flying to meet me in DC for the rally. She wanted to know how come

Thanks for the more specific questions!

We are not yet but will be an official delegation. I put off
registering us and was worried, but several phone calls to the NOW
"action center" in DC have put my worries to rest. There is no
registration of us as individuals; we are Women of Note.

However, delegations will not be plotted on a grid as they were
last time. This means that we have to decide our OWN PLACE TO MEET.
(I was wrong in my last note; I was assuming things would go on
    as they had before.)

    From the Mobilization Fact Sheet:

Assemble by 12:00 noon, Lincoln Memorial Grounds. Demonstration
will be completed by 4:30 p.m.

They request that two people from each delegation be marshals
(to keep the delegation together). I don't know what one has to
do to be an official marshall.

They also request that we dress in white.

I'm not sure yet what I'm doing once I get to DC. I do want to hook
up with womannoters/DECcies/friends-of-same for the rally, so I'd
for there to be a set meeting place. I'd feel comfortable if thought
I'd be able to (at least) find the WoN at the Lincoln Memorial grounds.

712.62question about being an official delegationLYRIC::QUIRIYChristineSat Oct 21 1989 19:5819

It's my impression that the impetus behind making Women of Note
a delegation in April had to do with providing a way for all those
marching to find each other. Since that service will not be provided
to delegations for this rally, we don't need to do this. I've got
till November 3rd or so (don't remember the exact date right now) to
mail in the form. The form has a line for each member and spaces for
their address and phone. I'd still like to do this, just to "let them
know we were there". Whoever would like to be counted as WoN, send me
your name, address, and phone. (And those of you who are bringing
or coming with non-WoN readers. Now, I don't normally like to give my
phone number out; if anyone has this same reluctance, I'm sure name
(and maybe city and/or state) would be sufficient. This just struck
    me as mildly strange phobia...)

Also, they sent me a really nice poster that I can make copies of.
If anyone wants a copy, let me know.

I assume that the address requested is "where you live" not "where
you work" (i.e., mailstop). I don't know that it makes much
difference, but I also assume it will mean getting lots of unsolicited
mail (which you may not want to receive at a work address).

712.65Grassroots pressure for gridsPROSE::BLACHEKTue Oct 24 1989 16:0223
There was a board meeting of the NOW groups in the Northeast on Sunday.
(New York, plus the six New England states.) The board was very upset
to learn that National is not planning on using the grid system. They
are planning on putting pressure on National NOW to get them to use
it again. It is just impossible to think that groups will be able to
meet each other at other locations. There are also may be
counter-demonstrations in the area, which would further complicate
    meeting at other sites.

It is a much more empowering experience if friends can meet and share
the experience together. I can't believe that National can't work out
    the details.

Also, last time I never did see the WmNote banner, even though I looked
for it. I think finding a group in a crowd that huge is more difficult
than any of us might think.

Anyway, if I find out what the decision is about grids I'll put it in
    here.

712.69WHERE THE BANNER WILL BEMOSAIC::TARBETSama budu zabyvat'Wed Nov 01 1989 16:0223
The banner will be located at the Reflecting Pool, either on the side
nearest the Lincoln Memorial or, if the squash is too great (as Bonnie
expects it will be), then on the opposite side from the Memorial. In
any event, if you go around the Pool, you will definitely find it and
us! We'll try to get there early, which should be easier as our hotel
(the one Robin booked rooms at, thoughtful woman that she is; see her
earlier response in this string if you want to join us) will be within
    walking distance.

Special nametags will be made for everyone who appears on Christine's

include (a) nickname (b) relationship to you (friend, spouse, daughter,
etc) if for someone else and (c) node::account. The nametags will be
    with the banner.

As with our other events, the banner will have ribbons to be signed by
all of us. PLEASE only use the stubby black pens that will be attached
to the banner: they're indelible, but the blue ones that some of us
used in April aren't and nothing I've tried (including varnish) seems
to be able to keep the marks from running, smearing, and becoming

Most rooms can support more than 2 people (in April we stuffed 5 people
into one, I slept on the floor in my sleeping bag, very easy on the
budget) so if you're tight for money, check around with others who are

Since Sir Reginald Ascii managed to get _his_ collating sequence
accepted by Babbige rather than the more sensible one Lady Ada Lovelace
    designed.

    You should know that, Mez.

Nerds must think alike :-). That was my first thought too.

Second thought was that the little nerd must have meant
            alphabetical-ascii (impressive for a manager-type, huh? :-)

Don't feel bad, Mez, she misspelled Charles (I think it was

I've just found that I will be going this weekend - and we have
one or two spaces left in the car, if anyone wants to join us -
come on, do something impulsive in a good cause. We will be leaving
sometime on Saturday, not sure of the details yet. We *may* have
a place to crash, but don't know for certain yet, if not we'll
probably find a place to share around Baltimore, and drive in Sunday
morning. The car will be starting from Merrimack, NH, with a pick-
up in Littleton, Ma (me). Call me if you are interested...

For those who wanted to go, but couldn't, here are a few of the more
original or amusing slogans (there were others that were more
    blunt/shocking, but I won't enter them here):

"Not every sperm deserves a name!"
    "U.S. out of my uterus"
    "Contraception not contra aid"
"BOONE, N.C.: Good ol' boy for CHOICE"
"Don't count my eggs before they're hatched"
"Free Barbara Bush" (I like it but nobody else seems to think it's
    				funny!)
    and ... my favorite ...
"No, Mr. Quayle, ROE vs. WADE is not two ways to cross the Potomac"

Seriously, though, folks, it was a peaceable, orderly gathering of
people. A few chants, some songs, a lot of posters, and a LOT of short
    speeches. I got there around 11:15 and stayed until 2:30 -- I'd
estimate I heard about 20 speakers and 4 singers in two hours! I was
on the Mall until 4:00-4:30, and saw that there was a march at the end.

All ages were represented (one slogan said "Republican Grandmother for
Choice"; one tot wore "A Choice"). Lots of college students, some high
school students. Lots of people from California who roared every time
their state was mentioned! Both men and women were there. Speakers
    were _mostly_ women.

Interestingly enough, I didn't see ANY counter-demonstration at the
rally itself. Did anyone else? Did anyone watching TV coverage see
    any? What happened Saturday?

    Pam

P.S. It was really nice to meet people from the notesfile and put
    faces to names!

    Another good one I saw:

"Get your rosaries outta my ovaries."

    And for Nancy b:

"Gun owners for choice: Bear arms, not unwanted children."

Some people from Wisconsin were spotted with a sign reading:
"Cheeseheads for Choice". That got my funny spot going.

I heard there was a counter-demo over by the ellipse, but neither
did I see or hear any counter-demos.

Mez & I had the "HONK if you're PRO CHOICE" sign on her car and
collected quite a few enthusiastic honks both going down and coming
back. We also got a few serious glares, frowns, and thumbs-downs. But
the most nervous-making was when we were passing thru Hartford on the
way back and suddenly heard right behind us the pull-over-and-stop
*woop* of a cop's siren. With hearts in mouths we swiveled our heads
around to find a young cop in an unmarked car grinning and giving us
    the we-shall-overcome clenched fist.

It was really a swell rally. Our community fielded about 40 people and
most of us stuck around for the final group picture with the banner
(well, pictureS really...I musta had 6 cameras draped around my neck at
one point) and then went back to the hotel for a beer and unwind.

Speaking of pictures, one of the funniest things for me was to see how
many random people came up just to stand in front of our banner and
have somebody take their picture! Kinda neat, albeit weird.

    	Santa Cruz County
    	Still stands for Choice.

There were many more student delegations than in
April. I saw banners and shirts from MIT, Tufts,
Tufts Medical School, Wheaton College, Wellesley,

Clark University, Holy Cross, Vassar, Mount Holyoke,

*sigh* I'll bet RPI wasn't among them.

As much as I loved RPI, one of my major disappointments with the school
was its combination of apathy and conservatism. I just know that they
would never get a delegation down there, let alone get enough money through
fund-raisers to fund it! I was so looking foward to being in the heart
of America's socially concious and activeyouth, but, at least in Troy, NY,
the student activism of the 60's in long gone. It is good to see that
at *some* schools at least *some* people are willing to stand up for something,
still.

(We had an abortion rally once to which about 20 people showed up. We
had an apartheid demonstration that got about 100 - many from neighboring
schools. We had a Take Back the Night rally to which about 50 people
showed up. This out of a school of 5000.)

Has anyone mentioned the nouveau-monument on the grounds of the
Washington Monument? It stood about 12' high, 18' across, and 6'
deep, looked like marble, and was engraved with a phrase which I
can't for the life of me recall...something like this:

                         DEDICATED TO THE WOMEN
                          WHO LOST THEIR LIVES
                          IN ILLEGAL ABORTIONS

It had six photos and life-stories of women who had died, with flowers.

We won't go back (to those days).

I'm finally caught up enough from it all to spend some time here.

I've talked to a lot of people who went to both the April march and
this rally. Most seem to have preferred April, since they felt more
    involved by marching. Comments??

I liked this rally better, but for somewhat of a selfish reason. I got
to be one of the people carrying the state flag/NOW state banner. (We
took turns.) It was really terrific to be so close that you could
actually see the speakers. I got some great pictures, or at least I
think so...I can pick them up later today.

We also got some celebrities to sign NH NOW pennants to auction off at
our next fund-raising auction. We got Peter and Mary of Peter, Paul,
and Mary to sign one. Kay Weaver on one. Ronnie Gilbert and Pete Seger
on another. Molly Yard and Ellie Smeal on another. I can't remember
    the rest.

Did anyone go to Kennebunk who would like to report on that rally?

And did everyone from NH see NH NOW's full page signature ad in the
Boston Globe NH Weekly section? If not, I have it in my office in ZK.
It was so exciting to realize that we got enough people involved to
afford a full page ad. And we've had a good response from it with
other people wanting to get involved too.

I don't know how Ken knows (in .105) that the people attending the
    pro-choice rally were not poor.

NH NOW had about $2000 donated to help those who could not afford to
go otherwise. We gave that money (in varying amounts) to about 50
people. Do poor people wear a label or have some obvious characteristic
    that I don't know about?

I too think that .105 should be moved. It is inflamatory and there are
plenty of places to discuss this topic. This note is not one of them.

I was thrilled to see so many young (under 40) women and men
at the rally, I was also thrilled to see so many old (over 42)
women and men there. Since we were all there for a peaceful
rally in support of women's lives, I did not expect anyone to
tell me explicitly what I need to do to be counted. And since
my daughter was there with me - she is no longer a student,
she no longer has a job, and she managed to loose most of her
belonging over the past month and only had $20.00 in her pocket
I guess she could be called poor - or maybe I should be for
having to supply her with food and shelter and hand-me-down
clothes to wear. But then I have a good paying job at DEC
and of course I am not poor so she couldn't be either or
maybe if we take an average of her income and mine (not my
son's he is a student and doesn't count) then we both could
	be poor.

	Anyway I digress.

I don't judge the worthliness of a cause by the "types" of
people who show up at rally but by the behavior of those
people when they are in groups that number more than 10 people.

Peaceful interaction speaks louder to me than any retoric
	or harangue on action.

BTW - I really liked Evelyn Murphy's speech.
