478.0. "=wn= lite - your favorite vacation spot" by TYCOBB::TPSEC (Lynne S...Noting BIG TIME!) Thu Mar 02 1989 16:40

During the fall I finally took a trip to Walt Disney World in
Florida, and found it to be the most fascinating place. Some of
the attractions were absolutley fantastic!!! Not to mention the
beauty and atmosphere of WDW, which I was also very impressed with.

To all the people who have been to this marvelous place, what were
your favorite attractions? What were the attractions that were
not so impressive? What was your overall opinion of WDW.

I was very impressed with The Haunted Mansion, with it's unbelievable
special effects...yeah the "ghosts" actually look real.

Pirates of the Carrabean and the Jungle Cruise with the animated
    figures were very impressive.

It' a Small world was also fantastic..and yes, you will be singing
    the song for weeks....

Space Mountain is an expierience in it's self!

As for Epcot Center...it was absolutely beautiful. The "World
Showcase" with it's many countries was fascinating and educational.
The resturants were exceptionally great, and "Future World" was
    very interesting too.

I would advise anyone to at least go once in your lifetime!!

478.1EPCOT - The Living SeasSLSTRN::DONAHUEThu Mar 02 1989 19:1127
My parents took my brother and I to Disney World in Florida when
we were young. I thought the Haunted Mansion was the best attraction,
along with the 20 Leagues under the Sea.

My husband and I went to Disney and Epcot two years ago. Hubby
never went to Disney (deprived child). He thought Disney was great
for children, appreciated the Haunted Mansion and the 3-D Michael
Jackson thingie, and then we continued to Epcot.

Epcot was FANTASTIC! It is the grown-up Disney World. We stayed
in the Living Seas for three hours, went through all the international
exhibits, and got to go through all the other areas - the farming
of the future, the space exhibit, etc.

We had more fun at Epcot, although I must admit I'm looking forward
to taking our six year old daughter to Disney sometime this year.
We went alone on vacation then, and kept saying to ourselves the
whole way through Disney ... "Suzanne would LOVE this! Wish she
were here!" Disney should be seen through the eyes of a youngster
to be fully appreciated. The look of joy on the children's faces
    is unbeatable!

    Just my $.02

478.2I love Mickey!NYEM1::BENNETTButterflyThu Mar 02 1989 20:0326
My Husband and I just got back from Disney in December. What a
perfect time to go, no crowds, or lines.

It was my first time but my Husband had been there many many times,
so he knew his way around the park like the back of his hand. When
we walked into Disney all I could do was gasp, I could not believe
how beautiful and how clean the place was, it actually brought tears
to my eyes. My Husband took me straight to "It's a small world"
he wanted me to see the best ride of the park. It was wonderful,
and that was just the start of my visit.

The parade of the characters was wonderful, Mickey's Birthdayland
made me wish that I had a child to bring with me. There was a little
girl on her Dad's shoulders in front of me, with her mouseketeer
hat on and the expression in her eyes and face when she saw Mickey
brought more tears to my eyes.

I could go on and one forever, I can't wait to go back with my child
   and see there expression.

M-I-C (see ya real soon) K-E-Y (why? because he likes us) M-O-U-S-EEEEE!

478.3Disney/Crowds...WFOV11::GONCALVESThu Mar 02 1989 22:4532
My husband and I went to Disney World for the last week of
1988! We spent New Year's Eve watching the show and fireworks
    in front of Cinderella's Castle.

It was a lot of fun, but the crowds weren't worth it. We totalled
our complete hours of staying there for the week and we only had
a 3 day pass - it came out to 32 hours!!!!!!! Oh my feet!!!

Yes, I agree. Disney is fantastic. We decided one evening to
dine on the Empress Lilly. I must admit, it was the best dinner
we had down there the entire week. We even ate at the Bistro
de Paris in the French building. What a trip!!! The waiters and
waitresses were all from France. I ended up buying the Mickey
Mouse cookbook because it had a lot of the recipes that they cook
down there. I've tried a few, and it's been a treat up here in
New England. But I just can't find the Red Snapper......?????

I even ran into a fellow Dec person in the Moroccan building.
Incredible! They were down in Florida for two weeks!!! My husband
ran into an old high school friend who was on his honeymoon. We
travelled around Epcot and watched the Illuminations with them.

To me, the Illuminations is the best!!! But I can't wait for all
the planned items that Disney has to open up. The future is at
    Disney. That's for sure!!!!

    Just my $.02,

The best time to go there is in October. We went this last October.
Spent a week in the area, 3 days at Disney. From the time it opened
until it closed at night. Longest wait was 15 minutes. I can't put
into words the feeling we had. Every time I see the TV advertisment
for Epcot I want to go back.

By the way do you know what EPCOT stands for ?

Lynne, thank you for your idea of entering this note here.
However, there are two conferences that have rather extensive
coverage of Disney world. They are indmkt::disney and jpoind::holiday_
travel. I really think that a note here just on Disney world would
be overly duplicating other available files and distract from the
major functions of the womannotes file. Perhaps we can change this
    to a =wn= lite - favorite vacations?

for now I'm going to set this no write but if I get mail so
requesting I'd be glad to resurect it as a 'favorite vacation'
    note.

Another Favorite Vacation spot for me is Cape Cod. We usually stay
in Wellfleet and the beaches on the National Seashore are gorgeous!
There is also Provincetown nearby for shopping and peoplewatching!

Going to the Cape for a week is the perfect escape!

Well, there is this mountain peak that's kind of away from
the others. The summit is above tree line, but the trail leads
through a nice pine forest with lots of little streams. The 360
degree view from the barren summit is a beautiful set of ridges
to the East, West and North, with a fine valley to the south. It
alone is worth the hike to get there and back. It's a real nice
place to go to get away from the world, admire God's handiwork, and
think about things. I'd tell you were it is, but then I couldn't
go there to get away from the world.

I had a wonderful time going to New Orleans, followed by a 4-day
cruise on the Delta Queen. By going just after Thanksgiving, with
a group tour, the cost was reasonable.

2nd favorite - skiing in Summit County, CO, especially in March.
All through school my family managed a week of skiing in CO each
March. We used to say all the rest of the year's skiing was to
get in shape for that week.

I love mists over the mountainsides and down in the valley hollows
up in the Napa, Alexander, and Sonoma valleys, and touring the back
ways of the wine country on sunny autumn days. Tasting, looking,
breathing, meandering around in the wine country is my favorite
vacation. Thats one of the reasons I moved to the bay area.

My favorite vacation was BERMUDA. We've been there twice. Once
without our children and once with them. The is absolutely beautifull.
Their main income on the island is tourism, so you are treated like
royalty. It's very expensive but worth every penny. Also it's
only an hour and a half out of Logan. AHHHH pink sands, 75 degree
ocean 85-90 degree wether and tons of sunshine.

Our second best trip was Disney World. We had never been. We last
summer and stayed at a Golf Country Club that had everything. We
spent four days between the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. We are looking
forward to goinh back. They're are always adding new attractions.
This spring the opening of MGM Studios is going to be happening.
We also went to Sea World which was wonderful, plus golfing and
laying by the pool. What a blast.

Our third best was a long weekend on Nantucket Island. This is
a small version of Bermuda, But not quite as warm. We did swimming,
biking, and some walking and so many other things.

There's still so many things to see and do.

We went to Hawaii for the first time last year. Visited three islands:
Maui, Kauaii, and Oahu. During the entire week we spent in Maui,
we both thought we must have died and gone to heaven. I didn't
know places that beautiful and tranquil *existed* on this earth!
I was so mellow by the time we left, I could hardly walk!

Kauaii was pretty, but seemed much less Hawaiian and more Americanized
    than Maui.

Oahu was like being in New York City. We won't go back there again.
    Ever.

Anyway, Maui was more wonderful than I could ever have imagined,
and we're both looking forward to going back.

My favorite vacation was in Hawaii a few years ago. Spent a week
on Oahu and a weekend on Maui. Should've been the other way around,
but we had a wonderful time. I agree with a previous reply that
Oahu isn't as nice as the other islands, but once you get out of
Waikiki and up toward the North Shore of Oahu it's very nice. The
Honolulu/Waikiki area is like New York City with palm trees. We'll
be spending our honeymoon :^) on the North Shore of Oahu in October
and I'm REALLY looking forward to going back!

Second favorite was in Walt Disney World. Last time I was there
was in August, just before they opened Epcot. I'm dying to see
Epcot and absolutely loved the Magic Kingdom!

Third favorite was a weekend my fiance and I spent in San Diego.
We did all the touristy things like Tijuana, the zoo, found this
wonderful little italian restaurant, it was a nice, romantic, relaxing
    weekend.

Although I hated Florida when I was down there a couple of years ago, I will
say that Epcot blew me away. The best part was Kraft's exhibit called "The
Land" or something similar. My friend and I did the usual "tourist" stuff there
and found out that we could get a special guided tour by a U. of Arizona grad
student of the behind-the-scenes stuff going on in the agricultural research
area. That alone made the trip worth while ... can't understand why there were
only 4 of us in the group getting the tour, though... ;^)

Another fun vacation area is West Virginia and Virginia in the beginning of
April. Harpers Ferry is a really quaint town in W. Virginia and the trees in
the Shenendoah valley take on the most incredible hues of purple and pink and
red before the leaves completely come out. Plus there are lots of fawns and
small bunnies to be seen. And the added bonus is that the park isn't crowded
since its not yet prime season.

Moosehead Lake in north central Maine has to be one of
the most beautiful spots on this earth. Still underdeveloped,
it's a great place for flannel shirts and jeans, watching the
lake change colors as the sun moves across the sky. We go
each year for a week and just forget about the world.

There's lots to do up there -- boating, hiking in Baxter State
Park, whitewater rafting on the nearby Kennebec or Penobscot
Rivers, or just vegging (as we do).

The lake, for those who don't know, is called Moosehead because
it is shaped like the antlers of a moose. The lake stretches
over 46 miles north, and looks different from various places.

As for tropics: St. Thomas and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
are both lovely, though the former is touristy. We've stayed
at a beach resort called Bolongo Bay, located outside of the
hubbub of Charlotte Amalie, but close enough to get a great
dinner and watch the sunset. St. John is a beautiful island,
with Trunk Bay listed on the Top 10 Beaches List in the world,
as well as great hiking and camping in the U.S. Virgin Islands
    Park.

Great morale booster to think of vacatin spots in the midst of cold,
    winter days!

Sister-island to Antigua in the Caribbean, it's largely uninhabited
outside the one village of Codrington. Hub and I were there in
February of last year and I WANNA GO BACK! In four days on five
different beaches, we saw a total of 3 other people!

It's not a place for everyone, because it's completely undeveloped for
tourism (except for one *very exclusive* resort which is entirely
self-contained and where the Royal Family of England has been known
to vacation! At $750-$1200 per day, needless to say we did _not_
stay there!) No shops, no nightlife, no restaurants - not even
a paved road. Just lots of unspoiled tropical island, wildlife,
80+ degree temps and deserted pink & white beaches. The *perfect*
    place to just R E L A X X X and forget about the rest of civilization.

Antigua (where we spent the second four days) is a 15-minute shuttle
flight away. Antigua's much more developed for tourism, but is
still very peaceful and quiet. The English Harbor area is just
beautiful, and Nelson's Dockyard has a fascinating history as one
of the principal ports in the Caribbean.

    We'll definitely go back someday!

My favorite vacation spot is Hawaii on the islands of Oahu and Kaui.
When I go to Oahu, my favoite place (I wouldn't stay anywhere else)
is The Royal Hawaiian on Wikiki Beach. Also on the North Shore
is Turtle Bay. My next vacation I'd like to go back or go to either
    Bermuda or WDW.

I hate it when (oops, wrong topic!) I ask a question and I think
my meaning is clear but it isn't! Now that it's been established
that Kokomo exists, let me re-phrase my question:

Is there really such a place as Kokomo (yes), and if so, (here's the
part I ass-u-me'd I implied) where is it specifically?

I always get a chuckle out of the song because Kokomo is in...

Indiana. It's a small city with a heavy industrial
and agricultural economic base, and not 'resort-attractive' by any
    stretch of the imagination.

My *favorite* vacation spot is Glacier Park in Montana during
the summer (that means July or August) when the glacier lilies are
blooming. I've been there several times and am always re-impressed
    with its grandeur.

You'll never forget driving up the Going-to-the Sun highway
-- built in the 30's, it is the only road through the Park.
There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails, lots of mountain goats,
delicate flowering plants, deep glacial lakes, and glaciers of course.

I have three favorite vacation spots. A high priced vacation
spot, a mid priced one and a low priced one.

My favorite costly place for a vacation is Hawaii. I've been
there twice in my adult life and loved it both times. I went to
Honolulu once and don't intend on staying there again. It reminds
me of a smaller version of Los Angeles in a nicer location. I'd
like to see the rest of Oahu, but not from Honolulu. I stayed on
Maui twice and love it there, but I'd like to try Hawaii and Kauai.

My favorite mid priced vacation is getting a room in San Francisco
for the night and spending a couple of days there. We live 50 miles
from the city, but staying there overnight is still special. We
like to visit the crumpet bakery, kick around the park, visit the
museums, shop on Union street and generally have a great time.

My low cost vacation is backpacking in The Emmigrant Wilderness.
Its just north of Yosemite and is a gorgeous place, lots of granite,
beautiful lakes and streams. It even has a very unusual lake for
the Sierra Nevada. It's a small lake, but it has a pebble beach
from wave action caused soley by the wind. The waves are about
6 to 9 inches tall, but they're very out of preportion with the
    size of the lake.

I don't know about driving, but I certainly won't ever forget
bicycling up Going to the Sun highway. I spent 4 hours in my
lowest gear wondering if I would ever get there (in sleet of
course, since it was August). Beautiful views when the fog lifted,
and a wild ride down after thawing out in front of the fire in the
    ranger station at the top.

I have very fond memories of both Glacier National parks (one in
the U.S. and one in Canada), as well as Banff from that trip.

Make it 3 votes for Glacier. The BEST 9 days of hiking, rafting, and general
relaxing place I've ever had. I don't know when, but I know I'm going back.

Kathy:

Which Glacier? The U.S. Glacier park joins with the Canadian
Waterton national park to make an "international peace park".
Canadian Glacier national park is a couple of hundred miles north
    of the peace park.

Been to Hawaii twice since '87. First time spent 10 days on
Oahu. Did everything conceivable (except the Polynesian
Cultural Center...) and had a fantastic time. Favorite
place was in the middle of the island between the mountain
ranges (there's a name for this place, but it's too late
at night to remember...). Loved the drive from Waikiki,
around Diamond Head and up the eastern side of the island
(towards and beyond Sea Life Park). What a gorgeous place!

Second time spent 5 days in Lahaina (on Maui) -- it was just
okay. Did all the touristy things... Hana, Haleakala (froze
our buns off, depsite being dressed for it...)

Spent another 2 days at Volcanoes National Park on the eastern
side of the Big Island. Lots of fun and quite educational. Drove
across (the southern route) to Kona and spent 3 days. Wish I'd
spent it all in Kona. Hawaiian royalty spent their vacations and
holidays in Kona... and it's no wonder... want to go back again
and drive the Saddle Road across the island. Want to go back
again and drive the northern route across the island...

    I JUST WANNA GO BACK!

My favorite place is the Schoodic Peninsula, part of Acadia National
Park in Maine. There are places where you can walk off the road,
down the rocks, toward the ocean, and, if you're lucky, encounter
   no other people.

My idea of heaven is sitting there in the sun with my SO and watching
the tide come in and listening to the ducks gabble as they swim by...
I like to watch the barnacles feed, too, and look for the occasional
   seal coming up for air.

   bliss.

Just got back from my first vacation in nearly 3 years... I keep
thinking "and this time last week we were..." doing this and that.

So -- this year's favourite vacation was Bonaire N.A. (in the
Caribbean). Don't go if you don't dive.
