910.0. "== wn lite == Favorite Movies of All Time" by LEZAH::BOBBITT (invictus maneo) Tue Dec 26 1989 12:56

I *know* there's a wn-lite topic devoted to favorite movie roles, and
how they made you feel (topic 776), but I wanted to start a topic on
favorite movies, because I saw some of mine over the holiday and they
    made me feel particularly good.

So, without further adieu, here are mine (so far):

    Fantasia (animated)
    Singin' In The Rain
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Harvey
    Heavy Metal (animated)
    Rock & Rule (animated)
    Phantom Tollbooth (mostly animated)
    Dead Poets Society

910.4Flicks I've liked well enough to buy the tapesMOSAIC::TARBETTue Dec 26 1989 14:5115
The "Star Wars" trilogy for class-act technology...and Princess Leia
"Indiana Jones and..." for beautifully updating the 30s serial
Disney's "Alice In Wonderland" for the CC, mostly
"Witness" for the evocative portrayal of Amish life
"Bedknobs And Broomsticks" for great fun and dynamite animation
Clint Eastwood's "Any Which Way" duo for its easy-going cliches
"Aliens" for the strong characterisations of women!
"The Frisco Kid" for low-key, kindly humor
"True Grit" for a period recreation and an ending better than the book.
"The Karate Kid" for zen and an upbeat story
"The Russians Are Coming!" for a *beautiful* ending
"Miracle on 34th Street" because I still really want to believe.
    "Seven Samurai" for individual characterisation
"Dingaka" for beautiful music...albeit a racist story
"Magic Boy" for being (to my western eyes) superbly japanese.
910.5TINCUP::KOLBEThe dilettante debutanteTue Dec 26 1989 15:002

Maggie and Lorna, "Witness" also is on my favorite list...
It has arguably one of the most intensely suspenseful
movie scenes I've experienced : the bathroom scene at
the beginning of the movie where the Amish boy Samuel
"witnesses" the murder and how he subsequently evades
	being discovered.

Doctah, "No Way Out" impressed me for having a rare
	truly-shocker ending and for a well-done (IMHO)
sex scene in the limo after Kevin Costner asked to be
taken on a tour of the monuments :-].

Lisa G., I thought I would be the only person in the world
to get a kick out of that very *weird* video, " Tampopo".
If you're looking for something *very* different to rent, this
	is definitely it!

The Boys in the Band - the most wonderful, sensitive and genuine
portrayal of male homosexualilty I have ever seen. Have seen it
about 12 times and would change my plans to see it again.

Rain Man - only twice, two days in a row.

Easy Rider - 15 times over the years.

Windwalker - a hauntingly beautiful film.

Desperately Seeking Susan - Madonna can't sing, but she's charismatic.

A Man Called Horse - only twice. Pity.

Little Big Man - 5,6 times. A masterpiece. ("You want to eat?")

Man in the Wilderness - 3 times

    Jeremiah Johnson - 3 times

Midnight Cowboy - 3,4 times ("You're the only one, Joe")

Cat People - 3 times. Decadence and a good blood and guts scene.

Cuckoo's Nest - the movie, the book, the play - it's brilliant.

The Hunger - classic, beautifully photographed decadence; it stars two
of the most photogenic people in the world - Catherine
Deneuve and David Bowie. Yeow! ("Are you making a
                 pass at me, Mrs Blaylock?")

me, right?) :-) I fell asleep during one of her movies at a party

Re Nancy & "Witness," I think it also has one of the most romantic
scenes of all time, when Harrison Ford and Kelly McGinnis (?) start
dancing in the barn. *sigh* (I loved it)

I also like "Desert Hearts" and "Something Wild," both mentioned
    by others.

Two others I enjoyed a lot were "Desert Bloom" and "My American

"Picnic at Hanging Rock" was the first Australian movie to
achieve international acclaim. The unique imagery and mounting
suspense surrounding the mysterious disappearance during a picnic
of 3 girls from a French boarding school make this movie one of
          my all-time favorites.

I've had two women praise a movie that I just cannot remember the
title to. It's something about "swimming with mermaids" and both
women claimed this was one of the greatest films ever.

Does anyone know the correct title?

Maybe "I Heard the Mermaid Singing"? I've never seen it, but I've
thought about renting it a couple of times -- the cover blurbs say it's
great. :-) It's about a quirky, original woman.

A movie that had fantastic music, magnificent scenery, and
a heart stopping ending ...... The Harder They Come.

As I remember the only places this movie showed any length of
time was in Cambridge, Mass & SanFran. Kbear

Or was it "I Have Heard the Mermaids Singing"?

How could I have forgotten "Plan 9 From Outer Space"? The worst best
    movie ever made.

    Dirty Dancing
    Lucas
    DARYL
    Witness
    Suspect
    Criminal Law
    No Way Out
    A Room with a View

I just saw a movie this past weekend that I'd add to my list of
    All Time Favorite Movies:

"My Left Foot" starring Daniel Day Lewis. A wonderful movie!

    "Driving Miss Daisy"
"Born on the 4th of July"
"Glory" (one of saddest movies I've ever seen in my life)
