    I'll start off again (I'm 2.1 in v1).

I'm usually Maggie or Meg and as you might suppose very proud of my
scots ancestry. I'm an engineering manager at PCSG in Littleton, and
have been at DEC 3.5 years almost to the day. I've 3 adult children and
one grandchild scattered all over the country, am unmarried, a
psychologist by training, and I love cats (support 5 at present),
traditional folk music, and asian food.

One of the things I'm proudest of is helping get this community of ours
started; it's even in my vita!

    					in loving Sisterhood,
    					=maggie

2.2Holly HendricksSUPER::HENDRICKSThe only way out is throughSat May 28 1988 14:1915
I work in Software Course Development which is part of Ed Services,
and I am located in Nashua, NH. I co-moderate several conferences
on various work-related and non-work-related subjects.

I've been involved with Womannotes since its early days, and have
been a co-moderator since early 1988. I got interested in feminism
when I started taking Women's Studies courses in college, and have
    been interested ever since.

When I'm not writing courses or moderating conferences, I'm working on
a master's degree in computer science, listening to or playing folk
music (especially British Isles and hammered dulcimer), playing with
cats, doing genealogical research, or riding my bicycle.

    Holly
2.3Liz AugustineMEWVAX::AUGUSTINEPurple power!Tue May 31 1988 20:2619
I'm Liz Augustine. I've been at DEC for 7 years, and am a Software
Engineer in the AI Group in DLB (Marlboro, MA). Right before coming to
DEC, I was a secretary at M.I.T. I started out here at the bottom of
the Wage Class 4 ladder as an administrative technical assistant.
Somehow, I managed to convince my bosses to let me try programming for
a living. About 5 years ago, I went back to school part time and
eventually graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science.

Even though I've been aware of women's issues for years, I've learned
a tremendous amount by reading and participating in Womannotes. Through
the file, I've met and become friends with women whom I would never
have encountered otherwise. Thanks, Maggie, for starting Womannotes.

Outside of work, I enjoy bicycling, swimming, cross-country skiing,
puttering in my garden, watching all the seasons, and playing with
    my cats.

    Liz
2.4Bonnie ReinkeVOLGA::B_REINKEwhere the sidewalk endsWed Jun 01 1988 15:5923
I'm Bonnie Reinke. I've been at DEC for 4 years and I am a Planner
II in the Options Business Unit Materials group in WMO (Westminster).
I currenty play a reporting role in the Low End forecast group,
determining forecast accuracy. I'm still at the bottom of the Wage
Class 4 ladder but am looking for ways to move up. Recently I completed
my fifth APICS course and I earned my CPIM in December (Certified
    in Production and Inventory Management).

Before coming to DEC I taught courses in several colleges, including
Middlesex Community College and Cambridge Junior college. I've taught
Biology, Oceanography, Anatomy, Chemistry, and Ecology.

I have been married for 21 years and we have five children (one
home grown and 4 adopted) the oldest of whom is a freshman in college.
My husband also works for Dec.

I first became aware of womans issues when I heard Betty Friedan
speak at my college during my sophomore year. Like Liz I have learned
a lot from reading this file and am very glad that Maggie started
    it!

Outside of Dec I enjoy gardening, reading (esp science fiction)
    and water color painting.
2.5Robin WheelerVLNVAX::RWHEELERLaughing with the sinnersThu Jun 09 1988 13:4317
Time to finally introduce myself -

My name is Robin Wheeler, I work in MR01 as a systems
analyst. I am 25 years old, and have been with Digital
for 9 years - I worked nights after high school, then
hired full time after graduation in June of 1981.

I am the single parent of a 19 month old son, named
	John - after my father.

I have a wide range of interests - quilting, photography,
muscle-cars, traveling (more in New England)

	/Robin

2.6Usa "Ann" PhilpottCSSE32::PHILPOTTHe's the colonel, I'm the boss!Thu Jun 09 1988 16:5527
This is the most appropriate place for this, but not strictly
appropriate since I don't *do* anything at DEC (my husband works
       there, not me...)

From time to time, my contributions will appear, and this is just
       a place holder...

My name is "Usa" (Thai for "dawn") though I prefer to be known by
my nickname, which is "Ann". I was born in Khorat, Thailand and
came to America last year, where I met my husband...

My mother owns a restaurant in Khorat, where I was working as a
chef prior to coming to America. Several of my recipes have
appeared in TLE::COOKS (the only other place I contribute...)

Due to the vaguaries of the American immigration visa system I
currently can't take paid employment, and am looking forward to
getting my "green card" so that I can stop watching so much TV,
       and get back to work.

       /. Ann .\

(freely transcribed into English by /. Ian .\ since my English
       isn't too good...)

2.7Beckie GreenhalgeATPS::GREENHALGEMouseThu Jun 09 1988 20:1414

I am the Release Engineer for the Advanced Technology Products
& Services group in Spit Brook (ZKO) working primarily with
    	the developers of VAX SPM.

I'm a single parent of a 19-month old son (Shawn) who takes
up most of my time. Before Shawn, I studied voice for about
five years. Now, I try to fit in some practice time whenever
possible. Shawn likes to dance & sing when mom practices so
    	that's a help (sometimes).

Other than that, we live in Nashua, have 1 cat and 2 goldfish.

        Beckie
2.8Dondi LaRueRAINBO::LARUEtheory vs reality syndromeFri Jun 10 1988 11:349
I am Dondi LaRue Tomkinson, Platform Engineering at LJO2. I am
building a lab and will run it when it's here! I came to DEC about
six weeks ago from the world of printed circuit boards.

I have two teenage sons, have a long distance marriage to my ice
climbing partner, make quilts when I can, blacksmith a little and
sleep in my spare time. :-).

2.9Catherine T. IannuzzoMOSAIC::IANNUZZOCatherine T.Fri Jun 10 1988 14:5330
I'm a principle software engineer with PCSG in Littleton, currently
working on DECwindows. I've been with the company for 11 years in a
variety of organizations: operations and diagnostics in the Mill,
Technical Languages in Tewksbury and Spitbrook, IVIS in Bedford and
Burlington, and now here.

I've worked my way up the hard way, after dropping out of college to
live in a yoga ashram and get married. After two kids and all the bean
sprouts I could stand, I went back into the real world. I took naturally
to software, got a divorce, retrieved my maiden name, and never looked
back.

I've usually thought of myself as having a feminist point of view, but
my understanding of what that means has grown and developed over time.
My life journey has brought me to identifying myself as a radical
lesbian feminist -- a vantage point from which I see many interesting
things. I enjoy endlessly theorizing about human behavior in my spare
time.

When not dissecting the nature of patriarchy, I read, garden
compulsively, and enjoy progressive theatre, samurai films, and the
blues. I force myself to enter the annual Boskone Science Fiction Art
Show, so I'm required to get out the pens and inks at least once a year.
If you end up on my Christmas list, you are likely to receive a
crocheted table runner. I still like to think of myself as a fencer,
although my back may never lunge again.

I live in Jamaica Plain with my 12-year old daughter and my 14-year old
son, and when they grow up I'm going to buy a motorcycle and become
irresponsible.
2.11professional wordslingerDOODAH::RANDALLBonnie Randall SchutzmanFri Jun 10 1988 19:5823
Bonnie Randall Schutzman, principal software technical writer in
the VIA Applications writing group. I just sent the CDD/Plus
Call Interface Manual to the printer.

I've been with DEC since January 1980 except for a year on my own
when I finished the SF novel I had been working on for several
years and wrote a second novel. I'm now working on #3, still
science fiction, although I have a contemporary-lifestyles tale in
    the oven, too.

In the course of my life I've been a hippy, a single mother, an
impoverished graduate student [English, specialty late medieval-
early renaissance drama], a yuppie [I have to admit I like the
money...], and now the mother of an adolescent. You will probably
hear almost as much about Kat, age 14, and Steven, age 4, as you
    do about me.

In the copious free time I have after work, novelling, and kids
are taken care of, I like to cook, do needlework, and write long
argumentative responses in notes. My father-in-law told me once I
    should have been Jewish.

I'm Janet Bader, more commonly known as -sunny-. I'm a Security
Officer II with ABO and have been with Digital since 1981.

I recently completed cross-training in the Materials Acq. department
as a Purchasing Associate and hope to move into that department
on a permanent basis with the new fiscal.

I just finished a fascinating workshop provided by UNM's Continuing
Education Program called "How Successful Women Manage". It only
served to reaffirm my faith in our sisterhood.

I am a disabled Army Vet and have strong feelings about that. I

Hi! I'm Roberta and I work in Bedford (BUO) for DIS Training.
My job title is Admin. Secretary, but lately I've been doing the
Department Coordinator's work since she is on a leave of absence.

I'll be married for five years this October to Jim (EXIT26::STRATTON)
and our son BJ will be four years old this September. I like to
read, bowl (10-pin), sew and spend time with my family and friends.
I recently started to trace my family tree, I've gone back four
    generations already.

If anyone is in Bedford for training, stop by and see me.

Lee Tatistcheff - Lee is short for Lizinka which is long for Liza
which is short for Elizabeth (my ELF registration).

I'm 25 now and have been with DEC for just over 2 years. I work
in NRO, the Material and Technology Analysis Lab, as an Acoustic
    Microscopist.

I live just outside of Boston (Newton, in transition to JP) with
my ex-kitten, now fat Morris look-alikw, Noah.

I have been described as radical feminist, middle-of-the-roader,
and sell-out, depending on who's talking. Myself, I don't like
    labels much.

I have a few hot buttons, but as long as no one is pushing them,
I tend to be rather quiet in =wn= these days.
2.17JENEVR::CHELSEAMostly harmless.Mon Jun 13 1988 17:306
I joined DEC in October '86 as a software specialist providing support
to the field. I hold a bachelors degree in history and computer
science. I'm toying with the idea of going back to grad school,
but I can't decide which field to pursue. I'm happily single and
living alone in Nashua - which is expensive, but worth it. (Living
    alone, that is.)

I've been with DEC for 7 years and hope to retire here. Gee, can
    I retire at 40?

    	I'm 29 and holding.
I like music, birds, men, nature, horses, reading, etc.
I'm currently learning about the human potential, and am quite amazed.

2.20new to Womannotes...BLITZN::LITASISherry LitasiTue Jun 14 1988 15:5326
Sherry Litasi, at CXO (Colorado Springs) since May, 1987. Currently
a Sr. Programmer Analyst in MIS working on Manuf. Finance applications.
    I Love it!

I tried to read womennotes last year, but became discouraged when
in a day there were over 100 unseen notes, not to mention tons of
history. With a new file, maybe I can keep up! I also read Human
relations, mennotes, singles and lots of actual technical stuff.

I separated from my husband of 17 years on April 2nd and am really
enjoying my life as a single person. Tom and I get along really
well now and share custody of our 12 yr old daughter. I have
rediscovered "dating" and have a lot to learn!

Other important stuff: After hiding out in a fat body for the last
10 years to avoid my confusion over men and sex and career...and
previous sexual harrassment...I have my act together! I've lost
35# so far, with 20 to go, all thru exercise! I love feeling
strong and healthy and in control of my body! Body image is a real
problem, but I suppose you have all talked about that already.

My participation in the file may range from reading to lots of
writing depending on the subject...I hope to learn a lot from
    all of you.

2.21From out in the fieldNAAD::SPENCERHolly SpencerTue Jun 14 1988 19:0920
Holly Spencer - I just started reading this notes file.
It's rather verbose, and about the 50th on my list, after DNT,
ETHERNET, SNA, X25, DNA PHASE V ... and ONTOLOGY, so I doubt if
I'll keep up.

I work in the field, as a network consultant in the DNT.
I'm part of Software Services, and I deal with our large customers
in the Route 128 Area, designing and recommending networks. I spend
a lot of time keeping up with industry, technology, and Digital's prodigious
lists of products and services, and their myriad undocumented interactions.

The job is great, though quite demanding. Informal "networks"
of people are as valuable as are actual, hands-on communications
technology.

I have a partner and a 5-year old son, and we now live
in a 60-year old house in Brookline. We have a cat named Big Kitty.
I like to garden, bike, ski, read, and get together with people to talk.
I appreciate the tone of sisterhood, and the sense of "we're on
this small blue-green planet together" in these notes.
2.22formerly 2.39 -- moving up in the world!ISTG::MEEHANLife's too long for uncomfortable shoesTue Jun 14 1988 19:3023
My name is Margaret Mary Meehan, alias m3 (pronounced m-cubed). I have
been working at Digital for over nine years, the last six of which have
been in the AI Technology Center as a product manager. I have been a reader
of Womannotes from the start but I do not write much. I prefer to save my
energy for the front lines, a place where I often find myself -- much to my
chagrin.

I am the Margaret that lives with that lives with Hal Shubin (of note 3.12
fame). Since word has gotten out that we will marry soon, many people have
asked me if I plan to change my name. I am fine-tuning my response, but it
is usually something like, "We each plan to change our names to a
contraction of the two -- probably 'Meebin' so that my nickname does not get
corrupted. Also, that gives Hal a chance to move up the alphabet, although
that probably doesn't matter now that he is out of grammar school and
probably hasn't been lined up alphabetically in a couple of decades."

I am currently looking for a new job and trying to plan a fun wedding. When
I am not involved in either of those pursuits, I like to eat the wonderful
food that Hal cooks, read, do aerobic exercise, go to the movies and hang
out with my friends.

Several things have changed since I wrote my into in V1 of Womannotes.

I still work in the Mill, but am starting to cast my eyes towards
NH for a job. I was just promoted to Department Coordinator III,
but am looking to get out of admnistration and into something more
technical. I am going to school and plan to enter a Master's program
in the fall of '89 for a masters in CS.

I just got married this April and I live in Nashua, with my husband,
    Jon Callas, and 2 cats.

I enjoy reading, designing and sewing clothing, fantasy role playing
games, mystery games, science fiction conventions, and cooking.

    Linda L. Huxtable (2.217 in V1)

Work: Software Specialist in Software Services, KCO, Great
Plains District. I do lots of programming, which I both
enjoy and do pretty well. I've been with Digital since Oct
'87, and I'm really enjoying it so far.

Personal: I've been living with/married to my best friend
since we moved in together in May '83. We have no children
:), no television :), and no cats :(. We both read lots of
science fiction and fantasy, as well as a good smattering of
other stuff. I've lived in the Midwest (Kansas now, Oklahoma
originally) for most of my life, and (mostly) I like it here.
I have a mild hearing loss and wear hearing-aids in both
ears; sometimes it's frustrating, but mostly neither I nor
anyone else notice much...Although people occasionally ask me
about my "British accent," which I attribute to the hearing
loss and reading unpronounceable words at a tender age. :)

I live in Weare, NH with three cats and a goose. I enjoy country
living, motorcycles, home remodeling and construction, flying,
handguns, model trains, and woods work.

    Well, that's all for now.

2.26Alex Alexandra - RTOUNTADA::ALEXANDRAWed Jun 15 1988 10:4832
My name is Alex Alexandra and I am living in Munich, Germany at
the moment on a 3 year contract from DEC UK.

I have worked for DEC since February 1988, starting life as a secretary
and gradually moving on to do implementation for European projects
and now, finally, managing my own project. What I'll do after the
3 years are up I still haven't decided.

I live alone with my dog and enjoy reading, cycling, walking, gardening
and cooking. I am doing a correspondence course on interior design
and collect 19th century (or older) silver watches.

Some years ago, I changed my name to Alex Alexandra (the Alex bit
is original). I felt I needed a change of perspective. After my
experiences and personal growth since then, I may change it again
when I return to the UK, to reflect the person I have become. My
experiences the first time were positive, though the reactions I
got from other people were very interesting. One woman told me I
shouldn't change my name because it was my family name! I wondered
what her reaction would have been if I had told I was changing it
    because I was getting married!

This is the first time I have been involved with womannotes. I found
the backlog of the first one rather daunting. I hope to be able
to keep up with this one.

    Regards,

    Alex

2.27Signing In...JENEVR::LEEWed Jun 15 1988 14:0032
    HI Everyone,
I just started reading this notes file (version 1) not long
ago. Am glad to a notes file like this and look forward to putting
    in my two cents.
I'm labeled a Software Specialist here in Merrimack NH. I've
been with my group, SWSE/ACES, since joining DEC some 4.5 years
ago. I support Ultrix and anything that will run on it including
    the worksystems software.
Before DEC, I worked for a consulting firm in California, and
before that, I was in school in Berkeley where I received my bachelors
degree in CS. Originally from Calif., people in the Northeast can't
figure out why I moved to Boston. Let's just say that I needed
a change and I got it! Not that I'm engaged to be married, it looks
like I'm going to be out here a lot longer than I had intended.
(God, I'm not looking forward to more cold New England winters.)
Actually, I'm glad I came out here. I've met some great people
and made some close and lasting friendships not to mention my fiancee.
What do I do in my spare time? Up to a month ago, I was involved
in community organizations, sitting on the Exec Committees. Loved
doing it, but it takes up a lot of time. After 3 years I made the
difficult decision to quit. Other than that I go to school part
time at nights working towards an MBA. And what little time I have
left, I jog, cook, and for the time being, I'm planning for the
BIG wedding day. I wish there were two of me to do all the things
I want to do (like reading notes files).
Before signing off, just want to mention that I'm a feminist
    (according to my own definition).
    					Ms. Brenda

This notes file is great. I wish I started on this a lot sooner.
    Better late than never, right?
2.28Jenny TurajCTCADM::TURAJWed Jun 15 1988 14:1929

I'm Jenny Turaj. I'm a technical writer out of the ASD group in
Merrimack, but my office is in Chelmsford. I've been a writer at
DEC for about 4 years, and before that did a master's in writing
at CMU. Before that I was an English major, but that doesn't pay very
    well.

I recently moved from the Boston area to Dracut so I could afford
to live alone, which I love. I now have a cat, but she doesn't talk
on the phone or watch TV or take long showers, so she makes a good
    roommate.

Since I'm still fairly new in town, I'm interested in making some
new friends in the Lowell area, and am particularly interested in
biking partners. Send mail if you're interested.

Besides biking, I like to read and sometimes write for pleasure.
I enjoy movies and music and theater and swimming and will try camping
this summer. Friends have called me a new age flake, which is pretty
    much true.

I used to read V1 of womannotes occasionally, but was overwhelmed
by the 22,000+ unseens I had. So, I'm glad for a new file. I've
learned a lot from womannotes, and have made some wonderful friends.

Glad to be here and looking forward to keeping up,

    Jenny

2.29Barbara Haslam - SLOHENRYY::HASLAM_BAWed Jun 15 1988 14:2928
My name is Barbara Haslam, and I am the Systems Manager in the Salt
Lake City, Utah, office. I'll be starting my 5th year at DEC in
August. I am happily married (finally!) and currently have 4 of
my 7 children living at home, plus one of my grandsons.

My husband, Michael, is returning to school for his third
degree--this time in Communications Disorders. He is hoping to
combine his engineering, programming, and audiology degrees and
    work in audiology (hearing) research.

Until recently, I co-owned a toy store where I spent many hours
of "spare" time after work. I also cater VIP affairs for companies
and private parties. Other outlets for my need to be creative include
presenting seminars both professionally and unpaid for women's groups,
divorced singles, and church groups in the SL valley. I consider
writing a book last year to be one of THE high points in my life
because I wasn't sure I could do it, yet I did.

At home, my children are Erin, age 8, Tom age 10, Jennifer, almost
17, and Mary Beth, almost 19 and the mother of Bobby who is 18 months
old. Of necessity, the children are highly independent, so it is
difficult to say how we manage to stay a close family, but we do.
At least, when we see each other, it's a lot like seeing a friend
we haven't talked to for awhile, so we share a lot about what's
happening in our lives, and in this way, remain close.

Other things I enjoy are sewing, reading, music and art, and
    communcating with other people.

I'm Lory Lee. I've been with DEC for 9 years, and I am a Senior
Software Engineer in DSPG located at ZKO.

I have been in and out (mostly out) of the woman notes file since it
first started. But this is the first time I signed in. Don't ask why
I never signed in before, because I don't know why,

Interest: arts & crafts; reading murders mysteries; music - classical,
new age and rock'n roll; skiing - downhill & cross-country.

I'm Jody...I've worked at DEC for over a year, and I am a technical
    writer with CUP in MR0.

I have found this notesfile, in its past incarnation (and more than
likely in present and future ones) to be alternately touching,
troubling, teaching, and rib-tickling. I feel very at home here,
surrounded by many kindred spirits (of both sexes).

I enjoy reading...a lot...I also play piano, lift weights, write
creatively, listen to music (new age, jazz, rock, classical).
I look forward to continued growth via this file.

This must be my lucky number. I'm also 2.32 in the first version
of womannotes. I'll give you an update on me because things have
changed quite a bit since that introduction. I am now the U.S.
Area Business Support Group Product Manager for Storage Systems,
Networks, and Communications for systems products (now that's a
mouthful). What that all translates to is that I make sure that
the field is ready to service the new products as they are announced
and shipped, and that the service strategies make sense. This is
a step up for me from my last position as Program Manager over in
NPO at the Mill, but I can say that this one will definitely be
challenging. I've been at this job for all of 2 weeks now, so I'm
spending a lot of time defining my role and making contacts.

I've been at DEC for about 6 1/2 years, and have made lots of friends.
I live in Bolton with my husband, Mark. In my spare time, I'm making
the curtains for our house and I enjoy all kinds of crafts, cooking
    and eating.

I enjoy womannotes, though I tend to be a read-only member.

Hi everyone... My name is Kathryn and I work for the Computer
Images Group in Bedford, MA. I'm a senior graphic illustrator
(computer-graphics, that is) and I've worked on and off at DEC
for the past ten years. When I wasn't living here, I lived in
San Francisco (mostly) and Norway and Denmark. I live alone,
but not for long. I'm getting married in October and I'll be
an "instant mom". My future husband has a seven year-old son
named Craig and I always look forward to the weekends that he
spends with us. I was married before, but I have no children
of my own. Well, I guess I do in a way. I've got two cats that
are mother and son and their names are Florence and the Cowboy.

I'm so glad this conference has re-started... I guess (like a lot
of others) I was a little intimidated by the size of V.1. I'm
basically a read-only type, but I may join in some discussions
if I've got something to say. Mostly, I learn quite a bit from
    the rest of you. Thanks...

Hi, I'm Robin Aagesen. I have been working for Digital (GSO) for
2 1/2 months now as a Sr. Producibility Engineer. So far, I love
both working for DEC and my new job.

Prior to my move to South Carolina, I lived in Florida for 20+ years,
which is where I started in this crazy business of PWB manufacturing.
I was born in Newport, R.I., but with my father in the military,
we did alot of "2yrs here/there" before he retired in Florida in
1966.I think the "here/there" routine is what prompted my love of
    travel!

I am 31 yrs. young, parenting a new 11 wk old pup (:)), and enjoying
the new changes that this career move has provided.

I have been read only in this file for over a month, and now that
I'm officially "signed in", I hope to contribute some of my own
    perspective in the ongoing conversations!
2.37Another woman of note...EDUHCI::WARRENTue Jun 21 1988 16:4532
My name is Tracy Warren and I've been a mostly read-only womannoter
    for two years.

I'm 30 (I still have a hard time saying that) and I've worked at
Digital in Education Industry Marketing group for four years. I'm
currently a Sr. Marketing Specialist and in need of a change. Most
of my prior experience (here and at other companies) is in marketing
communications (and some tech. writing). I've worked 30 hours/week
for 13 months now (though that's changing in July), and I feel pretty
good about setting a precedent in my group and showing it can work.
We now have two other women who have gone to part-time (20 hours each).

I have a wonderful husband of 3 1/2 years named Paul, a beautiful,
18-month-old daughter named Caileigh (well-known to Parenting noters),
and (might as well announce it here...) another one on the way!

I have a degree in English and am going part-time for an MBA (but
I don't take classes in the summer). I am also co-owner of a new
small business (a bookstore named Bookends that opened in Westboro MA
on Feb. 29th and sells used and new paperbacks; we have a great
SF section). And I'm finally working on doing some serious writing
(trying to get published and everything!).

In my spare time (ha, ha) these days, I go boating, read non-stop,
note, and spend as much time as possible with my family. I _don't_
cook, clean house, or do anything else that doesn't feel necessary.

I was a feminist before I knew what the word meant, and I'm becoming
more radical (not there yet) with each year.

    Hi,

I have been a reader for several months now (about 6), and have
been rather casual about it. I have finally realized that I always
    have been a feminist.

I work at ICO, in Chelmsford, Mass., live in Salem, N.H. I am
currently a Project Manager for the Field Manufacturing Information
Center, and am looking for a new challenge. I have been with DEC
for 5 years. When I am not working, I like to go camping with my
husband and dog (children (4) have all graduated out of the nest),
in our motor home. I do all the driving, etc., because my husband
is slightly disabled. That means I earn the bread too. I learned
to ski (down-hill) last winter, and am looking forward to next.
Most of the time I imagine I will be a 'reader', but might find
something interesting to contribute now and then!

Oh!! by the way, my first name is Nancy.....

Career: I joined Digital in 1968 to develop an automated test system
for our first COBOL compiler (PDP-6/PDP-10). Most of my time at DEC
has been in management: Software Quality, Industry Standards,
Applications, Storage Systems Quality. I am now Product Strategy
Manager for Service Industry Marketing. Service Industries are the
corporations whose product is a service: Financial, Telecommunications,
Media, Utilities, Transportation, and Wholesale/Retail. (Digital does
not classify Government as a service!!).

Before Digital, I taught school, and had several programming jobs. I
have a BA in ornithology and zoology (birds and animals).

Non-work interests: I am involved in feminist thealogy: reading,
participating in groups to revision theology/philosophy/psychology
from women's experience, and leading the UUA curriculum "Cakes for
the Queen of Heaven", with Peggy Leedberg and others. I am interested
in integrating feminist values into society, writing women back into
history, and living in harmony with the earth.

I live on an old farm in Harvard, Massachusetts with five cats, four
laying hens, and a huge dog (Great Pyrenees). I also have bats in the
barn, barn swallows in the garage, and swifts in my chimney. I grow
herbs, perennial flowers, and a few vegetables.

In my copious spare time I am an adult advisor to the UU church youth
group. I enjoy opera, chamber music, contra and square dancing, murder
mysteries, history/herstory, and poetry. I have no time for housework!!

most of that time. I am the Toolmeister for the ToolShed as
well as being a system mangler and a friend to creatures with

In one of my many personalities I am a mother of two grown children,
my son is 20 and my daughter is 18. They both live with me (this

In another guise I am a proponent of Feminism - but I am by no
means a radical feminist. Pat White and I have been leading workshops
on Feminist Thealogy over the past two years - together and separately.
That is where my sign-off tag comes from.

    Hi!

Paula here..been with good ole' DEC for 20 1/2 yrs.
Started out at the Mill as a switchboard opertor (two
position) and had lots of funny experiences with the
paging system! Got into the secretarial field, and
two years ago, after some hard work and nagging got
promoted to a Financial Analyst. My main responsibilities
are doing graphs. All those colorful little charts...I
love them! It's tough breaking away from the entry level
WC4 scene (as I noticed a few of us have).

Personal: Am married (for the second time) to a wonderful
guy who loves to plant flowers...if you reside in the
Hudson facilities, you all know him (he's the telephone man!).
I have one son, Richie, 16 years old, who is only
recognizable with a computer at the tip of his fingers,
and three step children, Rich - 23, Christine - 21, and
David - 19. I am working towards my Associates degree
in Business Management, love to play in the yard, take
trips to Bermuda (yearly), clothes shop, needlepoint,
and various other sundries. This notes file is great!

Gak - another introduction note! See also notes 2.53 and 2.226 in the
old conference, and - for a really entertaining note with lots of extra
details - 920 in WORDS::WHOAREYOU. [And when is VAXnotes going to
    implement automatic cross-referencing? :-)]

I'm a Senior S/E with BOSE in ZK, and have been with DEC for nine
(!) years now. I'm 36, recently divorced, and live in Nashua with
    my two cats.

I like this conference because I like noting, I like reading, and
in general I like discussing just about anything - *except* how
a conference should be run. (Or jazz. But anything else goes.) I
don't like shouting, whether verbally or in writing, and this
conference seems (most of the time) to allow more reasonable discussion
than most of the other chat-type conferences.

I believe in fairness, but must admit that it is not always easy
    to define - or implement.

followed by one or more kindhearted translators, who do what they
can to turn my writing into something that the common vulgar can
understand [Ed note: smiley face by author].

I've been working for Digital for 4 years now, three as an
apprentice bookkeeper and 1 as an assistant bookkeeper. I've
been working for a year on a programmer-analyst degree in night
school; I'd like to get into the software development field,
and then into project management. I am what you might call
a "self-made-girl". [Ed note #2: that last one was easy.]

I like sailing, the sun, and the ocean. I like nature and the
beauty of simple things. I play the piano, I cook for the art of
cooking ... and for the pleasure of eating, I draw and I write.
That's all done none too seriously -- I do it for pleasure and to
express myself. I also read an enormous amount. And I'm very
talkative, too. [Ed note: Another smiley face].

My head is always filled with ideas for new projects. I'm a
romantic, too, but not to the same extent. And I love my friend,
       David.

I am a woman, therefore a feminist. I hope to have children,
but I wouldn't want to quit working, to depend on another for
support. I like being responsible for myself.

       I am 21. I am Jewish.

       Shalom.

I'm so excited: A *new* Womannotes conference. I felt so far behind
on the last one that I never looked at it much. Hopefully, this
    time I'll catch up.

Personal Info.: I'm an Exec. Sec. working for the head of Software
    Licensing and Pricing.  I've been with DEC for over seven years;
working in Finance, Litigation, and Valuing Differences. I've found
myself a terrific manager now, so I'll probably be with the group
for a while (I've been here two years already).

When I'm not working furiously, I attend Clark University's adult
education program, trying to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree
with a double major in Business Administration and Psychology. I'll
be in my Senior year there after two more classes! I'm married
(it'll be 10 years on the 25th of this month!!) and we have no
children (but we do have our dog, Kat).

I'm Martha Phinney. I'm a Financial Cons. in Industry Mkt F&A (since
November 1987) and have been in the Finance world for about 4 years
now. I just completed my second degree from BU (Bus Admin) as my
first in Pre-Vet wasn't helping much with computers!

I've been married for 3 years this past April - not all was happy,
as a matter of fact, 2 1/2 of those years were kind of hellish.
I began reading womennotes last December when I needed a shoulder
to cry on regarding my marriage. I'm happy to say that things
have turned around considerably (with the aid of counseling I'm
sure) and for the first time, I'm seriously considering (and looking
    forward to!) our first child.

I've been with DEC 10 years and have a lot to be thankful for in
terms of the opportunities and advancement I've experienced.

I'm looking forward to contributing more in this 2nd version of
womannotes. And I want to thank the friends that have responded
to my entries in the past - it made me feel awfully warm inside!

My name is Justine. I've been reading Womannotes for most of
its 2 years, but it took about a year of reading before I
started writing. Politically I consider myself to be just slightly
left of center, but I wish I were much more radical. I really admire
strong women, and one of my personal goals is to get arrested for
performing some wonderful act of civil disobedience.

I've been with DEC just over 4 years. I started out as a TAG (DEC's
internal temporary group) and then got a permanent wage class 2 job
at the training center in Bedford. About 2 years ago I got hired as a
Technical Writer in Maynard, where I work now. It was tough making the
jump from wage class 2 to wage class 4, but I was fortunate enough to find
a hiring manager who saw real promise in my writing samples and who was
willing to take a risk and develop me as a writer. That "risk" seems to
have paid off for both the manager and me because I've been doing really
well in my job, and I like it.

In my other life... I've been going to school forEVER trying to finish my
undergraduate degree in Sociology. Sociology has almost nothing to do with
Technical Writing, but I like it, and I just want the darn diploma at this
point. I started out as a full time student, but I "ran away" to be with
an older, graduating student (long story...) That relationship was not
good for me. There was a huge power differential between us, and my
already-low self esteem just about withered away in the +/- 4 years we
    were together.

While we lived together I went to school off and on - we relocated a
couple of times because of her work, and all I could get (with no
degree) were low-paying jobs. Getting hired at DEC really helped me
gain some valuable skills and some financial independence, both of
which helped me gain the self confidence I needed to get out of the
relationship (though it did end very badly... at least it ended.)

For about 2 years after that, I lived alone and focused on getting my
professional and personal life in order. I spent time in therapy and
did a lot of good work around what led me to choose such an abusive
relationship. I made friends, started dating people who appreciated
my intelligence instead of feeling threatened by it. Then I got this
job, found a wonderful sweetie, and promised myself that I would take
at least one class each semester until I finished. And Finally! I
    will finish - Next May!

This intro has gotten longer than I intended it to be. But many of
you have shared a great deal of yourselves in this file, and I
realized that while I'm often quite liberal - double meaning intended
:-) - with my opinions, I haven't talked much about my life. I'm glad
to be part of this community. I'm delighted to see women reaching out
to each other and working to make this file a safe place to talk about
issues that are important to us.

I've been an intermittent read-only follower of Womannotes-V1 for a
couple years, but typically months behind. I did finally catch up,
just before the switch to Womannotes-V2. I'm really glad this conference
has survived all the debates about FWO notes, how the conference should be
run, what the tee shirt slogan should be, etc. etc. My compliments to
the moderators for their skill, care, and patience. And my thanks to
the rest of y'all for making this such an interesting place. I'm
pretty shy and apt to remain mostly read-only.

I work in Software Services doing VMS support. In general, that means
I read VMS code to figure out what it means and tell other people.
In particular, I work on the VMS Internals and Data Structures book
and on a VMS troubleshooting course and its student guide, bugcheck.mem,
about crashdump analysis. My favorite work thing is a nice juicy crashdump.
I feel very fortunate in having a niche that meets my interests as well as
it does. The down side of that is how easy it is to do little else.

I've been at Digital 15 1/2 years, all interesting and challenging,
most really good, a couple really awful.

Outside of work, I read science fiction, feed birds, try to garden,
and do needlework, mostly knitting. Jim, my SO, also works for Digital.

I've been married and divorced, once each, almost 20 years ago.
I gave up my name that once and was elated to get it back again.

    Yes, I do windows!

I joined Digital in January, moving here from Denver, where I worked

gotten use to being lost all of the time, I am really enjoying getting
to know the area! (I have adopted a "who cares what direction we
are going -- isn't this pretty?" attitude)

Back when I was studying (and I use that term lightly) to be a teacher,
one of my professors told me that I had better get the sarcasm out

Well, here I am programming computers.

Well, I've put this off for long enough...

I'm Carol Johns, a Software Specialist on the Language Support Team at the
Colorado Springs Customer Support Center. I started working for Digital in
1983 as a temporary CRR (I answered the phones) and worked my way up so that I
am currently a Software Spec II. I love my job and currently support FORTRAN,
C, GKS (graphics), and am learning LISP. Occasionally I support BASIC, ADA,
COBOL, PASCAL, etc, etc. I also was loaned to another group for a few months
to write part of a graphics application to be used here.

Originally from Southern California, I attended college in San Diego, and my
family is from the South and the Ozarks. I have a B.A. from San Diego State
University in Psychology and a minor in Business Administration, Management.
I have also studied Computer Science, Mathematics, French, Russian, ASL,
Spanish, Anthropology (under Shirley Strum), and Art History.

I came through Colorado while singing with an evangelistic team, and later
returned here to live. It was a wonderful move. I really like it here.

On a personal note, I am married to a wonderful woman and we have one son,
Evan, born on March 11, 1988. We also have 3 kitties and an Arkansas box
turtle named Terra who just sort of "appeared" one day.

I have been reading/writing to Womannotes for a LONG time now, and really
enjoy it. I have made many, many friends here, and I thank you for being you.

am on loan to the course development/writing department where I am
updating a course on VAX RALLY. I was an engineering writer at my

I graduated with an English/Communuication Arts degree from
Ursinus College outside of Philadelphia and moved to New England in
the fall of '84. I had never set foot in this area of the country
before. I am really growing to like it up here.

I spent my life growing up all over the country as my dad was in the
Air Force and we moved every 3 or 4 years.

I enjoy participating in and watching all sports, especially tennis.
I love to write in my spare time and want to someday complete a
novel.

After discovering womannotes was starting a second volume, I jumped

I've been thinking that I ought to introduce myself, as I've been

I am only going to be here for four more weeks, I don't know if
it's appropriate. But here it is anyway...

My name is Diana Carroll and I am a summer intern in the Mill.
I'm from RPI (or Rensselaer, as they insist on being called nowadays)
in Troy, NY (USA!). I'm a senior in Computer Science (next fall.)
I'll be headed back to school in four weeks,
which is both good and bad. (I like school, but I like summer...)
I like science fiction, scuba diving, talking (and talking and talking)
    eating out and music.

Unfortunately, I made it almost the whole summer before I discovered
=wn=, but now it's my favorite notesfile. BTW, has anyone else read
soc.women on the usenet? I got so turned off to that, everyone
was so vicious and flames abounded, which was one of the reasons
I didn't check this group out earlier - but this is so civilized!
Everyone seems so reasonable and open minded... I love you all!

Another BTW - I *love* getting mail...

Hi...I really feel like all I do is introduce myself in these

Bio data: 22 years old (I still watch the Disney channel though),
degree in English with a minor in Computer Applications (I'm
tired of explaining it but it means I can dabble in programming
and I can pick up computer "stuff" easily), went to the University

to San Angelo,TX for 6 months of Inteligence school (probably
in March of '89, working as a secretary in MRO3 but they discovered
that it doesn't keep me busy so I'm also working with MTBF/MTTR
PID info, and this sentence is much too long and doesn't even
    	have a verb.

I'm interested in this conference because ND, which I LOVE,
only went co-ed in the early '70s. The ratio is still in
the guys favor and there is a lot of tension between the
    	two sexes as a whole.

I miss college already and I miss my friends even more so notes
is my way of having discussions about many topics just like

be to be treasurer for Noreascon Three, the 47th World Science
Fiction Convention. Some of you have already volunteered to help
in this enterprise, but more are always welcome. Other activities
I engage in are needlework, research into intriguing little byways,
and role playing, both tabletop and full-scale.

I figured I should update my intro, since everything about me has changed
since V.1 (except my name, which be changing in 65 days). I was
working third shift and hating it, but I got a new job in PKO as
a Technical writer. (In fact, I owe this in part to a womannotes
party where I met a tech writer. I told him I wanted to be a t.w.
when I grow up, and he told me how to put together a portfolio,
which I did, and got the first job I applied for.) I have moved
to Arlington, and will be getting married in October. I will be
changing my last name to Ryan, not for un-feminist reasons, but
because I think Irish last names are neat.

I had an intro in the old file, but it's time for an update anyway,
    so...

I'm a Software Corporate Account Manager, located in Dallas, and
dedicated exclusively to Texas Instruments. My job is to keep them
happy and in a buying mood! Seriously, I manage the sales efforts
for large opportunities as well as resolve internal Digital issues
that affect my customer. It's an exciting job.

I've been with Digital a little more than 10 years. Spent the first 7
in Charlotte, N.C. in Software Services. Then I became a unit manager
and moved to Birmingham, Alabama for two years. In March of '87 I got
married to another Digit and we moved to Dallas. I have officially
declared that I'm NEVER, EVER moving again!

My husband is an office consultant in the A.C.T. here. In our spare
time we're slaves to a house, yard and garden, and we go sailing every
chance we get (which isn't nearly often enough!).

I've been in WOMANNOTES for, oh, about a year I guess. I've really
enjoyed getting to know all the folks who participate in this
conference, and have learned a lot by reading all the different
points of view. Can't wait to get my T-shirt!!!!

As a new person on Womannotes I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Pat Ryan. I'm an Executive Secretary for an Engineering
Group Manager at the Mill in Maynard. I've been in the secretarial
and/or office management field for many years. About a year ago
I got my Associates Degree in Business Management and am now thinking
of making a career change, hopefully within Digital.

On a personal level, I am in my late 40's, divorced, have three
grown sons who have all left home. My babies now consist of four
cats (yes, really, I have 4). Seems like everytime a child leaves
home I replace them with a cat. I am a liberal, a feminist, I write
poetry. Like to travel, read, go to concerts (particularly symphony).
Don't know what else to say about me except that I am glad I found
this notes file. Hope it will be a resource for networking with
    other women in Digital.

2.88Greetings from TexasDPDMAI::JAMESWed Aug 31 1988 19:5731
HI! My name is Kathy James. I'm an Admin. Secretary in the Austin,
Texas sales office. I've been with Digital for 5 years, 3 years
in Atlanta, Software Services secretary/customer assistance rep/tech
writer and 2 years here in Austin. I still don't know what I want
to be when I grow up (I'm 36.) I have so many interests.

I was a music education major in college; however, I dropped out
after 2 years to get married so I could help my husband (now ex)
through college and graduate school. To make a long story short,
I got a divorce from my brilliant, extremely talented, egotistical
husband, remained single for about 5 years, met/lived with/married
my brilliant, handsome, egotistical husband Randy and we are the
proud parents of a 3 1/2 year old son "Sparky" (Samuel Robert).

I love classical music, reading, time alone, a clean house (even
though I have to do it myself), cold weather (I didn't leave
Massachusetts because of the weather), the ocean (I'm from Plymouth,
Massa*tooses*, as they say down here), singing to myself, entertaining
the office, our 2 dogs (Harley and Kelly), our cat (Foots), my 3
sisters and 2 brothers, and my parents who just moved to Claremont,
New Hampshire. I also love my mother-in-law who is one of my closest
    friends.

I HATE fire ants, hot Texas summers, *ss kissers, sales reps who
act like children, I could go on.

I'm more of a reader than a writer in notes files. I seem to express
myself better in person. Thanks for listening and I look forward
to being a part of WOMMANNOTES.

11 years and 1 month (as of tomorrow), starting in the (yuk)

the NY/NJ region. I'm married to another Digit (we met while
I was in the mailroom scenario) and will celebrate our 2nd

an Australian Shephard named "Nikoma". I love Stephen King
    novels, noting and other "stuff".

If all goes well (fingers crossed here) I'll be heading out

Just to let you know where I'm coming from in any replies I

My name is Jan Ritari. I'm with AISC (Admin Information Services
Center) in CHM. Our group does high-level summary reporting for
senior management. We also design reporting packages for specific
products/product families. I do decision support, providing
information on sales of specific products/product families or to
specific customers. Sometimes I get off-the-wall questions for
order information that need to be researched (these are my favorites).

I've been with DEC for 8-1/2 years starting in GIA (a storefront
in Nagog mall), then to Stow and now in CHM.

I've been a widow for the past 2-1/2 years after many happy years
with a *really special* man. Our children (25 and 19) still live
at home. We all have pretty busy social lives and even though we
live in the same house, we're rarely all there at the same time
(except to sleep). I'm in the MBA program at Clark University's
Boxboro campus and have only 9 more courses to go. I'll need some
finance courses to graduate, but I'll take only the bare minimum
required -- number crunching isn't my thing.

I love to read and to write letters. I think I have a good sense
of humor (though I've never heard anyone own up to not having a
sense of humor) and I love Monty Python (my son introduced me to
them). I've done some travelling (not nearly enough) and intend
to do a lot more as soon as I finish with college tuitions (mine
    and my daughter's).

You'll probably be seeing more of me in this conference now that
I've got my feet wet here.

After some reading here, not introducing myself would give me a
kind of voyeuristic feeling - so: my name is Christiane Weyrich,
but everbody (still) calls me Pony - I used to wear a poney tail
when I was a child. I've been with Digital Munich for almost 11
years now, started as a temporary replacement and never had planned
    to stay....
Before that, I did some (mostly American) literature at Wuerzburg
University (a town about 300 km north of Munich), focus on poetry
    - a nice thing to starve on...
I've never been married and have no kids. I'm with a wonderful man
(10 years already!!!), but we don't live together; he helped me
a lot in learning about women's situation - I never thought there
was a real problem until I started working; you hardly experience
    it in school or university...
I'm really happy I found this file, and some of you already seem
quite familiar to me ;) If anybody ever comes to Munich (for the
Octoberfest, for example...) please DO CONTACT ME.

    regards

My name is Nancy and I'm from Kentucky.

I am:
- Technical writer for about 5 years
- New to DEC as of 6/20/88
- Writer in the PC Systems Group in Littleton (LJO2)
- Happily married for 26 years
- Mother of two sons, 20 and 17
- Seminary graduate (BU, 1966 - before the influx of women into seminaries)

I have been:
- Licensed preacher (United Methodist - first licensed in 1958 or 59)
- Director of Christian Education (about 14 years, UM and UCC)
- Director of a career assessment and job-hunting-skills program for
       Displaced Homemakers (CETA-funded, early 80's)
- Belly dancer (I highly recommend this for feminist women - interested
  in discussing?)
- Leader of women's (and sometimes men's) consciousness-raising workshops
       (early 70's)

Interests:
- Psychology (developmental, social, and organizational)
- Music: folk, country, and classical
- Theology (to some extent)
- Politics (sorta')

Curious about:
- Feminist issues that are important to people today - I have been somewhat
out of touch with women's groups for several years as I worked to learn
about computers and become established in documetation, enjoy teen-age
sons, be supportive to my husband in his fledgling business, etc.

Looming Crisis:
- "Facing Fifty" very soon!

I just realized I haven't properly introduced myself.
    Here goes...

Jodi Newell, recovering perfectionist, 12.5 years with DEC.

My first 8.5 years were spent making excuses for the Computer
Special Systems (CSS) division of Digital in California. I was
involved in electro/mechanical design and drafting.

When CSS West transferred it's businiess to New Hampshire I opted
to take a job with the Southwest Area Software Services group as
their Marketing Communications Specialist. That was fun but I missed
the technical side of the business. Four months ago I transferred
    to the SWA Proposals Group.

I am now in charge of proposal graphics, proposal graphic standards
and any odd graphics job that comes along. No, I do not do garage
    sale signs!

I am married. Just celebrated 15 years of marriage to a man I have
known since second grade. We dated for 6 years before getting
married when I was 20. We have two children, a 3 year old girl
and a 1 year old boy. Live and work in Irvine, California.
I am 35 years old, 5'1", medium build.

I am addicted to notes and have considered seeking professional

Hi! I am Dorothy Dixon and I work as a Software Documentation
Editor for SWS Pubs and Techologies at Parker Street in Maynard.

I have been with DEC for 5 years, with this same group. I started
out as a Word Processing Operator and 4 promotions later, I am
now an Editor. I am sorry to say, however, that I must now look
for a job outside of the company. I have just had a baby and
(after much thought) have decided that I need to spend more
time with him. [Sam is 4 months old]. I approached my
manager about working part-time, be he denied it. I have
had no luck finding part-time work in the company, so now I must
start looking outside the company. I am disappointed for a lot
of reasons. One of those reasons is Womannotes. I have
been reading and learning for 2 years now. =WN= has been a
tremendous help to me. There was so much I was feeling but
couldn't express, and =wn= helped me understand alot of what
I was feeling. After reading for so long, I've just started to
participate and it feels good. I will continue to participate
    as long as I can.

As I said, I have a 4 month old son, Samuel. He is the center
of Richard's and my life. I am also the step-mom to Richard's
3 children from his first marriage.

Well, that's enough for now. I am looking forward to becoming
a member of the warm and supportive family.

I'm 26, married (but that may change soon...) to a self employed
engineer, no kids, live "out in the boonies" in the house my husband
built. I have many interests but too little time.

I really enjoy this file as it makes me THINK even though I'm not
contributing a whole lot. (I'll try but I'm a bit shy)

2.105Amy Asbury, finally checking in...JJM::ASBURYWed Oct 05 1988 13:5928
    Hello,

Since I've been reading for a long time and writing in this conference
for quite a while as well, I figured I should introduce myself.
    (finally!)

My name is Amy Asbury. I am 23 years old and single. I am currently
working as an engineer in the VAX Workstations group in The Mill,
although, I am hoping to change this in the near future. I graduated
from WPI in May, 1987 and have been in this job since July of that
year. I am currently attending Babson College at night, working
    towards an MBA.

I have a lot of strong feelings and opinions about a lot of issues,
but I also try to listen to viewpoints that are different from my
own. I mean, really LISTEN *and* hear, and try to understand where
they come from. I also am trying not to be judgemental.

My main goal in life is to be happy. I also want this for all of
my friends. (they are slowly getting used to me asking "but does
it make you happy??" instead of "why on earth would you want to
    do *that*??")

    That's all, I guess.

     -Amy.

    Hi there,

Val Pollard, co-creator and co-moderator of the "other" women's
conference - Euro_Woman. I decided it was about time I introduced
myself as I've entered a couple of notes in here.

I work in Financial Operations as Secretary to their Manager, Brian
Totham. I'm a temporary, and have been temping at DEC in one position
or another for nearly a year now. I started out with CSS while
they were still in Reading, and then moved into Finance. I'm on
the look out for a permanent job with DEC at Reading.

Outside work my hobbies are reading, writing poetry, amateur dramatics
(I'm a member of the newly-formed DEC Reading Amateur Dramatic Group),
playing darts (I play for my local pub) and socialising generally.

I'm divorced, 31, and share a house with three other women. I have
one child, a boy, who lives with foster parents.

Look forward to contributing more actively,

Hi my name is Judy Pilotte, sometimes called Jude. I work for GIA
Materials and Distribution Organization in BPO, Marlboro Mass.
My title is Information Systems Consultant. What that means is that
I work in MIS and that I lead projects with resources scattered
all over the world. It makes the job very interesting.
I am married (number 2) and have a wonderful husband, an 8 year
old daughter by my first marriage. I also have a step-daughter,
12, who lives with her natural mother. I live in Hudson Mass.

    Its pronounced WOOL-LOCK-O-WITZ. ;^)

I'm in my second week as a Commodity Manager at LMO2 located in
Marlboro. My previous job was as a Component Engineer and when
I started at DEC almost nine years ago I was a Financial Analyst.
I think DEC is one of the few companies around that allows such
    job flexibiltity.
Outside of DEC I work part-time as a Nautilus Instructor at Your
Life Center, a health club located in Auburn. Its fun and gratifying
at the same time. I work-out primarily with free-weights and some
of my other interests include hiking, bicycling and cross-country
    skiing. But I'm *NOT* a jock. ;^)
I also enjoy cooking and baking (thats one of the reasons I have
to exercise so much!) and on ocassion I'll do some needlepoint.
I also like to read and try to read a few books a week, ranging
from psychology to sci-fi to mystery. Being single lends itself
to alot of free time. ;^)
I have been reading this notesfile for quite awhile and have learned
alot from many of the contributions. Its comforting to know that
I'm not alone in many of the things that I have experienced over
the years. I have been read-only for the past year but I intend
to make the time to contribute to this notesfile.

I read a lot -- mostly science fiction, mysteries, and trendy rubbish.
I've sold poetry and non-fiction to national magazines, and once spent
two years building a sailboat from a hull and deck kit, though I'm
no longer interested in boats.

I am the youngest elder in my (Presbyterian) church. (Elders are the

I look forward to reading more, and maybe even contributing a note or
two!

Well, now that I've finally entered a reply somewhere I guess
    I'd better introduce myself.

I graduated from Tufts and New England Conservatory last May with
a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in jazz piano. I'm currently
working in the PIMS project (part of PIMO) by day, and trying to
practice and play music with other musicians by night.

I come from an almost embarassingly stereotypical lower middle class
liberal Jewish New York family. My father died when I was eight
so after this point I was raised by my mother alone. I have only just begun
to appreciate what this undertaking entailed, and my respect for
her increases as I age (23 at present and very depressed about it,
    I must say).

Even though my father died when I was so young I still feel that
he made a strong impression on me somehow. My political views are
closer to his than to my mother's (more leftist than hers),
and often in a conversation with my mother in which we disagree
about something, she'll tell me that my father said the same thing
I'm saying. This goes for my musical views as well, as my father
was a musician, even though the only thing he really knew about
jazz was that Louis Armstrong could really sing a tune! :^)

Anyway, I am constantly amazed not just by how much sexism there
is (which I expect from idiots) but at how many INTELLIGENT, decent
people refuse to be called feminists. I don't know what the problem
is that people have with this label. So let it be known, I am a feminist.
You really can't not be one if you are going to pursue male-dominated
fields like music and software engineering. It also helps that
I am a fairly strong-minded, confident person, so I don't get fazed easily.

I live in Somerville, since September in my own apartment for the
first time ever and I love it. I don't get the slightest bit lonely.

I feel a little "inferior" to some of the womannoters whose notes I have
read. I have never been married, divorced, gone through intense
sexual reorientations, or done any of the exciting things everyone
in this file seems to have done. I hope I will have lots of exciting
life experiences so I have something worth contributing. (Sorry
for being facetious. I hope no one takes it for disrespect. Actually I
    am half serious).

Looking forward to lots of cool noting.

    Roberta

P.S. If you want to know about upcoming gigs, let me know and I will put you
    on my mailing list!

2.115Long-winded again :-)STC::HEFFELFINGERTracey Heffelfinger, Tech SupportWed Nov 02 1988 16:5698
This is a bit longer than most of the intros here. It's a bit
more detailed than I usually write (athough it fit right in in the
notefile it came from). But since I 1) hate writing intros, 2) had
just written this one within the last week or so for another note file,
and 3) was pretty pleased with the overall balance of this one, I
decided I'd just move it part and parcel over here.

I was born in Akron, Ohio in 1961. Moved to South Carolina
between 2nd and 3rd grade and been here ever since. (Although I
have stubbornly held onto my northern accent.)

Was probably the only avowed atheist to attend Furman University, a
small Southern Baptist liberal arts college. Here I got my degree.
Majored in Computer Science and Business and minored in Math and
Music (Vocal Performance). (Can you say overcommitted? I knew
    you could!)

I joined DEC here in Greenville, S.C.(Printed Wiring Board shop) in
June 1983. I did a stint as an Application programmer supporting
various Financial Applications. After 2 years, I joined the Tech
Support group. I'm still here today as a Sr. Systems Analyst doing system
management of 3 clusters and tech support for programmers and end users
alike. I do all hardware configuring and ordering for the plant. I'm
also the local expert in System Security. (Expert is a relative term
and in this case is sorta damning with faint praise. :-) )

I'm another singer. I usually sing contralto or tenor. Then
I took voice in college and was informed that I was actually a
coloratura. (For those non-musically inclined, a contralto is the
lowest female voice and often has a heavy or Wagnerian tone. A
coloratura is a soprano (highest voice) whose tone is light and
agile and suited to singing very baroque or ornate music.) While I
stood there with my mouth open, my voice instructor informed me that
often women with extremely high vocal ranges can sing quite low as
well. The ones that are musically inclined are often stuck into the
alto section when young because they can hack the tougher role of
singing harmony. After working with her for three months I had a well
developed 3 1/2 octave range. I hardly ever sing "right" nowadays; I
do no significant training/practicing at all so my range has dropped
back to about 3 octaves (and on bad days a little less than that :-)).
I really miss singing "professionsally" but the time that I need to
keep "in shape" and the opportunites to sing the things I want to sing
in the environment I want to sing them are practically non-existent.
Nowadays I limit myself to singing around the house and in my Church
choir. (8 people; I'm the only soprano. We refer to ourselves as the
Clemson Unitarian Universalist Mass Chorus and Tabernacle Choir, "the
only choir whose name is bigger than the reality!")

Currently, my political convictions are mainly disgusted.
I decide things on an issue by issue basis, but I usually end up left
of center. (Sometimes just a little bit left; sometimes way the hell
out in left field.) I've only been old enough to vote in the last two
(pres.) elections. I voted independent once and libertarian once. I
don't plan to vote this year at all. (Yeah, yeah I know. I'm
disgusted with myself over this, but the choices were so uninspriring
that I flat missed the deadline to register.) (We moved this past year so
my registration is no longer good.)

My religious convictions are not something I usually discuss
in public. I no longer consider myself an atheist, but I'm certainly
not Christian either. I'm attracted to some of the ideas in neo-
paganism, but so far that attraction has remained an intellectual
one and not a spiritual/emotional response. Depending on the phase
of the moon, I waver between agnostic, theist, and animist. For
now I feel at home with the Unitarian Universalists.

My interests outside of work are: Noting. Although, like many
here, my noting has decreased from the "old days". I'm mainly
read-only now. Cats. We have seven. Most came from the shelter.
a few were strays. One is a Siamese that we bought from the breeder.
When a cat needs a home, we can't seem to say no.... Crafts. Mainly
needlework of various kinds (knitting, cross stitch, sewing, etc.
ad nausea) but occasionally I foray into woodworking. (I just looked
up "foray" to make sure that I really could use that as a verb. The
entry says: "to ravage in search of spoils:PILLAGE vi: to make a
raid or brief invasion <forayed into enemy territory>" Given my
love-hate relationship with it and skill level, this word was more
appropriate than I knew when I chose to use it. :-) ) Reading. Mainly
SF and Fantasy. It's a rare week that I don't read at least two books.
When I get into a real reading mode, I can down 1 or more a day.
Aikido. Currently a Blue belt, was about to test for Green (about
halfway to Black in our school) when I found out I'd be taking a
several month "leave of absence". (Obstetricians do not look kindly
upon a woman being slammed to the mat in a legsweep when she is
    pregnant. :-) )

Which brings me to personal life. I'm married to Gary, whom
I met in college. This Jan (89) will be our 4th anniversary.
Gary and I are currently expecting a child. The due date is May
    8th.

I guess that's it. Is anybody still awake out there?

    Trace
    (aka tlh)

Hi wimyn! This is my first attempt at a reply - I've been
a read-only noter until now. But this great file really made me
    want to get involved.

As you may be able to guess by my username, I'm a DECtemp
(are we allowed to note?), so my address won't always be the same.
I've only been with DEC a few months, but I really like the atmosphere
here. As a temp, the only way to describe what I do here at DEC
is "a little bitta this, a little bitta that". So far, I've been
fortunate to have two excellent assignments.

I and my spouse are currently finishing up a brand new house
in Bow, NH, and can't wait to move in (hopefully by Thanksgiving).
We have two "kids" with fur coats and wagging tails - Manco, a
lab-shepherd cross-breed, and Saiga, a greyhound adopted from the
Seabrook racetrack (a plug for REGAP - they make great pets!).

I enjoy: reading (esp. historical fiction), good music (esp.
blues, e.g. Koko Taylor, Stevie Ray Vaughan), Jazzercise, playing
with my dogs, hiking, camping, the beach, and fun friendships.
I just read that paragraph and yuk!! it sounds like a singles ad.
Well, this is my first reply - guess I need more practice.

Hope to be noting regularly, this file is great!

Ok, Ok, so I procrastinate when it comes to talking about myself.
When was the last vote? That's the last time I introduced myself --
    back in V1.

I've been reading this conference (and V1) almost since their creation.
I've learned a lot, cried a lot, rejoiced and hollered a lot. Who
ever said that growing is easy?

I'm a Principal Software Engineer with the VMS group now. Just
getting my feet wet -- this is my fourth week.

Prior to this I spent a short stint in AITG before the great-budget-
cutters-in-the-sky canceled the project. And before that, I spent six
years in SEG/CAD working on DECSIM. And before that, (yes, I've been
with DEC eight years), I worked in the Microcomputer Product Line as a
Product Planning Specialist. The group merged with the Tech OEM group
and became Tech Volume Group; who knows what they're called now, but
    they're over in MR03.

And there was even life before Digital. I worked as a programmer,
trainer, installer, pre-sales support, post-sales support for a small
company in Vermont before I finished school. I had taken a year off
from school, and worked at this job and others. After finding out
what burnout really is and paying my entire salary in taxes for our
household, I decided it was time to finish school, get my degree and
earn a real wage. Sure am glad Digital was hiring when I was ready.

Outside of work I'm an avid bicyclist. During the warmer months I try
to commute to work or ride during lunch. You may have spotted me.
    I'm the weird person who rides a Linear -- a semi-recumbent. As I get
older [where's my cane? ;-) ] the standard touring saddle just
doesn't make it any more. The recumbent is a very different way to
deal with this, but it works for me. You should see how traffic stops
    to stare!!

I also enjoy model railroading. My hubby and I belong to Northeast
NTRAK; its a modular club in N-Scale (1/160th of the real thing). We
bring our 2x4 foot modules to train shows, set them up with others in
our club, and run trains all day long and talk with viewers. Great
fun. I specialize in building the structures and doing the scenery.
Right now I'm building a model of the house we live in.

We also belong to Northeast Live Steamers. This is a club that
promotes steam engines. We own two live steamers. One is a model of
    the Woodstock Railway engine that ran in the 1890's in Woodstock, Vt;
it runs on 7 1/4" track. The other is a Boston and Maine. It runs on
3 1/2" track. Both run outdoors and burn real coal; operating
pressure is around 100 PSI. The larger one allows the engineer to sit
on the tender and pull cars with people behind. The smaller one
requires the engineer to sit on a flat car behind the tender and can
    pull significantly less passengers.

Both hobbies are great fun, accept I'm the only woman in both clubs.
Its not bad in the Ntrak club because the fellows range in age. But
the Live Steamers are typically around the retirement age due to cost
of entry and time needed to build an engine. Old impressions die
hard. They love to see me operate the engine though, so maybe there's
    hope.

So am I off the hook for an introduction yet? Cheers....
					-Leslie

I changed careers at that time and now work in Marketing. I
do research work for our collection of emerging industries in the
    General Services Industry Marketing organization.

Hi - my name is Susan Moore, and I've been a little remiss in introducing
myself promptly in =wn=. I began working at Digital in August of this
year, and starting reading =wn= a little while ago. I was about to
introduce myself and start noting more here when I was distracted by the
realization that they would like me to *work* here, too. So I felt I
should take a short break from notes rather than jeopardize my mortgage!

I work as a sr. consultant in Management Sciences in Stow. We are
essentially a planning and operations management consulting group of about
70 who work for Digital and consult only to Digital organizations. I've
been working as a consultant for about 8 years, but in the health care
field before now. So this industry is new to me, but being here has felt
like a good change for me from the beginning.

Actually this has been only the latest in a lot of major life changes. Over
the years I've been a sleep researcher, social worker, pilot, potter,
cellist, and hospital operations analyst. I've earned at least some of my
living at most of those at some point. I think I'm driven by a fear that I
won't think my life has been interesting enough as I look back on it when
I'm 90. Or maybe it's that I can't decide what I want to be when I
grow up! :^)

I'm particularly enjoying the people I've been connecting with since I came
to Digital, especially those I've met through this and other notesfiles.
Community is very important to me, and I'm delighted at the additions to my
own community that I've been making since I came here.

I look forwokard to getting to know you all more.

Hi,

My real name is Margaret, but all my friends call me Muggsie. I have been
at DEC for 1 year 9 mo. I am in the CASE marketing group in ESG, focusing
on product strategies for CASE. I now really like my job, but it took
awhile - coming to DEC was a real adjustment.

Before coming to DEC, I worked for Tektronix, for 9 years in both engineering
and in sales support.

I grew up in LA, and then lived in Oregon for 10 years, before moving to
New England 6 years ago. I love New England and feel very at home here.

I have been married for 3 1/2 years to a wonderful man who also believes that
marriage is an equal partnership. We don't have any kids, but would like to
sometime in the near future. I am 32 and am feeling that biological clock
ticking ... For right now we put all of our parenting instincts into our
dog Scoobie.

I have just starting reading this conference and have some catching up to do.
I will keep reading, and will respond some of the time also.

Muggsie

I've really enjoyed reading this note and look forward to somehow
keeping up with it. Now that I've introduced myself, I'll have
    to participate.

Referring back to 2.21, I have actually managed to keep
up with WOMANNOTES. I have grown to appreciate more the gentle,
irrestible pathos of woman's plight in this world from some very
outspoken, brave, and touching notes I've seen.

I have transferred from the field to NAC Engineering,
where I am the DECnet Phase V Migration Field Test coordinator.
I'll be planning and coordinating DECnet/OSI testing for customers
on both sides of the Atlantic.

I still follow network technology. though I've also
expanded my quest to "humanet" technology, how people network
to each other, to see the web of interconnections. "Towards
a New Woman's Psychology" by Jean Miller from the Stone Center
in Wellesley has given me a boost along those lines. I have
discovered yoga, and am a more relaxed and vital person
than previously.

I still live in town, in Brookline, MA and I have become
increasingly active in local political action. I am concerned
about local and global environmental issues, town greenspace
and recycling efforts, and day care and schools. I have been
to the state house to lobby for toxic waste reduction in Mass.
I urge others to get out of their armchairs, and join effective
organizations that work towards a closer, greener world. It's
fun and rewarding!

As I have been away from this Notefile for about 3 month, and hadn't introduced
myself since somewhere back in V1, I thought I'd better do something about the
situation before starting to note again...

Joana Bize, 33, married, 1 stepdaughter (15), 1 daughter (9), 2 cats, 1 dog,
1 rabbit. Main interests: books, animals, food.

I have been with DEC 11 years, in European HQ, Geneva, Switzerland and recently
followed an intensive 3 months training to become a Network Support Specialist.
The training was quite fascinating, and I am very happy I got this opportunity.
I came back from vacation, and have been ON THE JOB - which seems incredible
after all this preparation ... - since January 3rd. I don't have the title yet,
just the job, but I'd rather prove my worth and get the title after, than get
the title before I am ready to handle the responsibilities, and be disappointed
because I can't! (I known I'll be able to, I am just desperately trying to
sound modest and not feeling it in the least!)

While on the training I have more or less followed what was happening in WN by
extracting batches of notes and reading them when I found a little time, but
even that way it was hard keeping up with all the traffic! I hope I'll be able
to read and note regularly ... at least now I can say I am testing our network
connection with the US!

Warmest regards to you all, it's nice to be back!

Joana

    Hello!
I have enjoyed =wn= immensely for the past two months and will

Massachusetts. This is my first professional job after TEN years
of college. I am very glad to be at Digital and am *delighted*
to work with/for so many women. (An aside: in my field of chemistry,
the number of female professors at PhD-granting institutions is
0.6%; there are fewer in administration.)

I have been married for six years to a wonderful man; we have
no children. My husband and I both grew up in (different) small
towns in Montana. We spent the last six years in Arizona, and now
we are really enjoying New England.

I didn't have a lot of time for hobbies in graduate school,
but I have always been an avid reader. My husband introduced me
to science fiction and fantasy. My favorite books are about Real
people who have done good or difficult or wonderful things. I
like to read history. I also like to hike gently (see more; hurry
less) and go camping. I can't wait to see what the spring flowers
look like in this part of the country.

    	Glad to be here.

Hi,

I started my post-college life with a degree in fine arts, a new husband, and
very little idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I spent the
next 5 years tinkering around with painting, pottery, drawing, woodworking...
until I finally realized that I did not want to be an artist. So, three
years later I had another degree, this time in computer science and a new job
as a software engineer in VMS. That was almost 2 years ago, and it was a
good move.

I enjoy playing fantasy role playing games and am currently in several GURPS
campaigns - one is a medieval Chinese setting, and the other group alternates
between fantasy and post-holocaust campaigns. I also enjoy hiking, Jazzercise
(when the music's good), music, good friends, and especially, animals. I
share a house in the woods with my husband Ed, two dogs and two cats. Ed is
also a software engineer at at Digital. He recently joined VMS, making us one
of seven married couples in the VMS engineering group. The cats are Tristan
who's a deaf, white, blue-eyed bozo, and Tenzing, a tabby who's purrs could
wake the dead. Our dogs are both Borzois (otherwise known as Russian
Wolfhounds) named Aisha and Zowie. They're tri colored females about 6 years
old.

I've enjoyed reading this file for several months and hope to become more
activelly involved in it.

Karen.

Hi, I'm back (as much as I can). I was fairly active in V1
of the file, but changed jobs at about the same time as this
	version was created.

I've worked for DEC for almost 9 years, the first 8 of
which I worked in the VLSI CAD group in Hudson, Ma. Last
June I transfered to the DECtrade project in FIE (Financial
Industries Engineering). I'm project leader of the Management
piece of the project. My piece allows the sytem manager to
monitor and set characteristics of the DECtrade components
as well as user-written applications anywhere on the network.

It's been a very high-stress project, but I'm loving the
	challenge.

I've recently joined the women's barbershop group in DEC, since
I love to sing and haven't been part of any choral group since
I joined this company. Also, this will keep me from working
late every night now that I have another commitment.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone who has
joined this since I stopped reading, and re-aquaint myself
	with the older members.

...Karen (currently in LM04, but soon to be in PDM)

My name is Peg Petagna. I am an Administrative Secretary in USM
IM (U.S. Manufacturing Information Management). I have been at
DEC 10 years. I have a family (son, age 26 yrs and daughters, age
17 and 23, and my husband). I am enrolled in a Compensation and
Benefits certificate program at Northeastern University. When I
complete this program, I hope to get a certificate in Human Resource
Management, also. At some point, before I retire, I would like to
    work in Human Resource Management.

	OK, I'll finally sign-in.

I've been with DEC for 4 years, 7 months and I've been reading
Womannotes since Jan '88. Why have I never written? Just a
	coward I guess.

I'm a Senior Software Specialist recently having finished working
on an OLTP project for GE. The project is over but unfortunately
	it was never "done".

Outside DEC I work with the Senior High Youth Group at my church
and have traveled all around the U.S with twenty-some high schoolers
( they are the best! ). I sing in the choir, play co-ed volleyball
and have spend the better part of a year making baby quilts for
my six friends having their first babies.

I've considered myself a feminist since college ( much to the
dismay of my friends who didn't want to be associated with such
a strong label ) however I think I've been intellectually soft
when it comes to all "human" issues in the last five years. I
love Womannotes because it has me thinking again. I recently read
Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaiden's Tale" after seeing it mentioned
here. I lent it to a friend ( who happens to be married to a minister )
and I can't wait to discuss it with her when she's finished.

	Well, back to read-only ( maybe ).

    It's about time I finally signed-in - I've been reading =wn= for
a very long time. I've often wished the noters were together, in
person - it seems so much *easier* to talk in person!

I work in PKO for Field OMS - I'm called a "Post Delivery Manager".
(Sounds like I work in a maternity ward!) I've been with DEC for
twelve years; thanks to Digital, I have a BS in Business and a
Masters in Business Management...almost. Still haven't finished
    the dam*ed thesis!

Much of my spare time is devoted to women's issues...I've been a
member of South Middlesex NOW for years, co-facilitate a "Women
and Aging" group, and spend lots of energy working on pro-choice
issues. I'm also interested in antiques, and have been taking
    classes this year.

I've been divorced for so long (23 years) that marriage is a dim
memory. I'm 46; have one son (that I'm embarrassingly proud of)
who is 28. I'm pretty proud of Harmony, my cat, too!

Perhaps I'll be brave enough to participate in =wn=, now that I've
    introduced myself...

My name is Julie Palmason and I work in WAO for Field Service Sales

    of vacation!!

I have been keeping up-to-date with Womannotes for several months,
and also keep tabs on notes in Gardening, Environmental Issues and
Home_work. I love getting into heated discussions with my mother
about her feelings that women's liberation has destroyed men.

I live in Littleton with husband Rob, and I can't wait for our current
remodelling project to be completed. We are doing alot of the work
ourselves and it is quite a task!

Looking forward to becoming more active here.

I'm Clare Baggott. I've been with Digital in Reading, UK, for
    exactly 2 years (I joined on March 2nd 1987). I did a variety
of things before joining DIGITAL, including translations, writing
and editing, research into medieval Florentine social and political
history, university lecturing, adult training. Since I've been
with the company I have worked as a user information engineer
with IED (International Engineering Development), and am currently
an engineering specialist with the UK Local Engineering Group.
We provide localised products for the UK market.

I have two children (aged 4 and 5), a husband, a cat and, currently,
    a French au pair.

Though mainly a silent (but not passive!) reader of =wn= I feel
strongly linked in to and supported by this community. It's good
to read the discussions of like-minded people, even if the Atlantic
    usually separates us.

My name is Deborah Grahn. I've been at Digital for nine years and
have had basically three/four different jobs, the common thread is
that they have all been in Manufacturing or in support of it. I
started my career at the MLO in Corporate Quality as an Information
Specialist, moved on to the Boston plant as a Vendor Quality Liaison,
after that I became a Customer Satisfaction representative and now I'm
a Project Manager in an organization that has seen many re-organizations
and name changes, we are now known as the U.S Business Center located
    in MRO/HYO/MKO/WJO....

I am a Gemini and for the most part I am more comfortable and prefer
human contact verses electronic contact, I have been reading the
womannotes file for sometime and feel I have remained on the sidelines
    of silence long enough.

I consider myself a holistic, spiritual feminist, who's very curious
    about everything!

I'm grateful there is support within DEC for women.

I'm happily single, I love all animals, I think it's the little

My main goal in life right now is to discover who *I* really am.
It hasn't been an easy task, but it has had major rewards!

I've been a read-only member of this notes conference for quite
a few months now, but have decided that it was time to at least
	introduce myself.

I've really enjoyed reading everything that goes on in here, but
I've especially enjoyed seeing all of the warmth and support that is

I'm not sure how much I will contribute, but I hope I can in some
small way so that I can give back what I have taken.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm Debbie Redmond, but known as DREDMONDS in these circles. I'm
in Security at Cupertino, California and will be leaving DEC in
about a week. Nothing against DEC, everything against SECURITY.
I am one of the zillions of people in this universe who is not
living up to my potential - lots of skills and aptitudes and no
where to put them - this will soon change.

I spent the first 10 years of my adult life in the U.S. Army
and have been out another 10 - having babies and getting an AA
degree, which I am not using, which is why I am working in
Security for $6.48 an hour, when I am capable of so much more.
(At least that is what my friends keep telling me!)

After looking at the walls and trying to look busy, one of the
other guards (known as AngieBaby) finally cued me into this
form of communication. What a God-send! The only problem is that
I'm one of 'those people who are intimidated by computers' and it
takes me three days to do what others do in three minutes. I just
can't remember what button to push to do what I want to do!

Anyway, thanks for being here. There is no way I can read even
a fraction of the info. here in a week's time; but I will do as
much as I can and I hope that I can add some insights as well.
My loves are psychology, holistic practices, and of course, Women
    in the Military.

Keep up the great work - professionally and privately. It truely
makes me proud to be a woman in these times. As so many of you
already know - I CHOSE TO BE A WOMAN THIS LIFETIME because there
are so many exciting things going on. I also chose an alcoholic
father, a martyr for a mother, and OMAHA, NEBRASKA (?) to be born
in. Why would I chose Omaha, Nebraska to be born in? Of course,
I had to wake up one day, look around and ask 'Is this all there
is?' And of course, being born right smack dab in the middle of
the good ol' USA, I knew there was more. And more. And more.
    AND MORE.

I've seen most of this country and some of Europe. I'm almost 38
now and I figure I have at least 50 years left, so I plan to see
    more. And more. AND MORE.

I just remembered - this is supposed to be an intro., not a book.
Please forgive me - I just discovered I was a writer not long ago.

Again, I say thank you and God bless.

Well, life has changed somewhat for me since I first introduced
myself in here (reply 2.105). Most of the change has been, thankfully,
    for the better.

I am now working in Marlboro (MR4, to be exact) in ESG - Applications
Technical Support. I have been here for 2 months, almost, and I
love it. I am still going to grad school at night (Babson College)
aiming toward an MBA. I work on the weekends as a volunteer at Emerson
hospital in Concord, MA. If you come in the main entrace Saturday
mornings, my smiling face will most likely be one of the first things
    you see.

This new job keeps me very busy, but I still try to keep up with
=wn= as best as I can.

    Happy SPRING!!!

I've been a reader of =wn= for quite a while, often silently,
    but I enjoy it tremendously.

I work in Stow, in the Software Products Group, lately involved
in the implementation of License PAKs and VMS V5. It's quite
    chaotic, to put it mildly.

Outside of work I have a great life that includes an active 8-month

on. He definitely keeps me busy.

I have been read-only in womannotes since the day I started at Digital, and
finally am going to introduce myself.

My name is Lynn Yaeger and I am a technical writer who has a 3-month contract
with Digital in Mtn. View, CA. I'll be leaving May 12 to go to work for a
start-up company, but I really want to participate until then - even if I don't
say much. My guess is, however, that now that I've introduced myself, I'll put
my two cents in quite a bit - being the vocal sort that I am.

I am 42-years old and in a wonderful relationship (4+ years) with a woman
named Donna. I have been married; I have three *neat* kids: a son 23 who is in
his second year of graduate school at Harvard, a daughter 21 who is graduating
from UC Davis in June and a daughter 19 who is a junior at UC Santa Cruz. All
are math majors, fun folks to spend time with and good friends with each other
and with Donna and me.

In my non-work hours I help Donna with remodeling the home we bought in San
Jose two years ago (a fixer-upper in every sense of the word), serve as
Treasurer of a group called High Tech Gays and help organize a group called the
Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Awareness Program (LGBAP) that goes to high schools
and jr. college classes (when invited) to talk about our lifestyles. I adore
teenagers (actually people of any age) and try to do volunteer work in schools
whenever I can.

That's it for now. I feel like I already know so many of you, I'm glad I
finally gave you a little info about me.

almost 16 years, starting in Software Support in Sweden and, after moving to

Hi, I'm Lyn. I started work as a software writer at DEC exactly 3
years ago at the age of 40, and this is the first notes conference I
have participated in, mainly because I just don't have time. I squeeze
in 30 hours a week, and am glad I can work part time even while it
frustrates me that I can't seem to move forward very fast.

My checkered past includes 3 years at Yale School of Drama as a
set painter which I gave up to get married, 3 years in England with
my British husband, many years off and on as a children's librarian
which I loved but could not afford to continue, 15 years as a parent
of two energetic kids, Alison and Geoff. They are the reason I
    work part-time.

My life changed drastically when I came to New England, discovered
nature, joined the peace movement, became a political activist, and
stopped reading gothic novels. I have had very gentle contact with
feminism through a loving women and religion group. I'm a feminist
as long as there is room there for our sons as well as our daughters.

Things I rarely have time for are hiking, nature photography, playing
the oboe, singing, drawing and painting, swimming and tennis. I
do play a lot of soccer with my daughter and a lot of baseball with my
    son.

I've been reading Womannotes for quite awhile but have been reluctant
to reply very often. I get so worked up about subjects I care about
(children's issues, free speech at the top of the list) that I feared
spending all my time being agitated.

I started at DEC in 1980 as a technical writer. I work in both
Littleton and Maynard. I consider myself a radical feminist (because
I would like to see some systemic changes in our society)
bleeding-heart liberal. I'm married to another computer type and
    we have two great kids.

    Just discovered this interesting notesfile!

I'm a software specialist in Utrecht, Holland and working for 5
years with Digital now (starting in the PC-business).
At the moment I'm in the Office Automation unit.

Since about a year now I'm in the workers council of Digital.
This council has 15 members in Holland, of which 3 women.

I'm interested about the position of women in Digital, and trying
to find out as much information as I can get about this subject.
In Holland these subjects are not as much discussed as I've seen
it is in the US. Therefor we can learn from you I think!

Outside Digital I like reading (SF is a favourit), gardening, going
    out for dinner/shopping.

                              -< Nancy Ferrer >-

Hi, I'm Nancy. I've been with DEC for almost two years and
work in Merrimack as an administrative secretary for NHAS
Telecommunications. It's boring, and I'm looking to move
    on soon.

I'm from NYC and now living in Nashua, NH, though I plan
to move to Boston someday, which isn't as big or as busy
as NY, but it's not as dull as Nashua. I just wouldn't be
able to afford the luxury of living alone.

I'm single right now and like to go out dancing. I love
going to Boston, trying out different ethnic restaurants,
hiking, and hanging out with friends. My only addiction
is reading. Favorite authors are James Kirkwood and
    Marge Piercy.

I've met some great people and hope to meet more. I enjoy
making new friends and I've already made a few through the
    notes conferences.

Finally, I'm real and I'm in ELF, so now I can sign-in (though that
hasn't kept me from entering replies in this conference):

Married to Ron, who works for GIA in Acton and introduced me to
    this conference (he's a read-only member).
Two children, teenagers, one entering college in the Fall.
Started with DEC as a contractor last September; delighted to be
    a real, full-time, permanent employee.

    Hi,

My name is Lynn Harpham (my VAXnode says "Murray" -I was married
recently, and have changed my name).

I am a sales rep in the Santa Clara office, and have been with DEC
for 7 years. The first five years were in the F&A organization.

I'm 30 years old, born and raised in NH, but living here in Northern
California for the last 7 years. No children yet, unless you count
my two cats, Molly and Iago, who are 8 years old, and members of

My name is Peggy Leedberg, I am a Software Engineer in NaC Technical
Support in LKG (Yeah! I really have done it).

I have worked for DEC for almost 8 years and this is my first job
outside of Software Services. I have been the Toolmeisterin
a system mangler and a friend to creatures with scales.

I am the mother of two grown children, a son 20 (junior in college
PolySi major) and a daughter 19 (completed 3 semesters of college
EE major). They both kinda live with me.

In another guise I am a proponent of Feminism - but I am by no
means a radical feminist. I am interested in Feminist Thealogy,
the Goddess and what it means to be a witch in 1990's America.
That is where my sign-off tag comes from.

                           --< Susan Holmes >--

Will the mystery noter sign in please... My name is Susan Holmes and I've
been at DEC for almost 9 years. I'm currently working in Corp. Internal
Audit as an Information Systems Consultant (supporting automated audit
tools, assisting with 'systems' audits, and consulting for the finance
audit staff when they audit an I.S. group).

I don't get a chance to spend alot of time in Notes, (not nearly enough
as I'd like that is), but I ocassionally browse through this conference
so I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm currently enrolled in an independent-study degree program (at Vermont
College of Norwich University). This is my first semester and the study
I've chosen is "Women and Self-Esteem; Transitions in Women's Lives".
Consequently, I may pose questions within this conference from time-to-time
to get your input.

I'd also be interested in any reading (book references) that conference members
feel are central to this topic. (I'll be looking at several aspects of the
Self-Esteem issue such as body image, fear of success/failure, and the various
transitions a woman might experience -- marriage, divorce, motherhood, death of
a spouse/child, abortion, etc., so feel free to recommend reading in any of
these areas. Obviously I won't be able to do justice to any of them in full,
but I'd like to scratch the surface on quite of few of them.)

When I'm not working at either of these, (which seems like almost never lately),
I have a multitude of personal interests such as: gardening (flowers and veg-
gies), cooking, many of the 'old time' crafts (quilting, counted thread/embroid-
ery), reading, shopping (okay, so I'm a complusive shopper!!), and local history
(currently working on/chair of the local Historical Commission and the Central
Mass Postcard Club). You name it, I'm interested in it... (almost) anything
that is other than housecleaning or ironing!

I'm 34, married (a little over 12 years), and have no children currently (other
than my two 'babies' -- Tanya, a 75-pound female German Shephard - 10 yrs old,
and Fred, a 4 yr old black cat.) Am contemplating motherhood within the next
few years but would like to lose some weight first; (have been significantly
overweight since puberty/adolescence).

That's it for now. Looking forward to the many insights and new persepectives
I'll gain from association with this conference.

    HI!
I'm Andrea and have been at DEC for 2yrs.9mths. and 8mths temporary.
I work in Colorado Springs at the Forge Rd. R&D facility. I really
like it here. Previously I worked at the main plant on Rockrimmon as
an assembler on the RA80/81/82 lines. Now I operate the Sputter system
and hope that I will be able to work on our new sputter machine. I'm
22 years old and unmarried but am CURRENTLY living with someone of the
opposite sex; that soon may be changing. I bought a house in October
so this Spring/Summer has been somewhat busy putting in a fence and
yard. I love the outdoors and sunshine. I wish I lived somewhere with
water!!! I'm a Colorado Native; 4 generations of Natives in my family!
My family owns a restaurant here in the Springs thats been around for
48 years. I love to travel and was lucky enough to have a mother work
for a MAJOR airline company so I got to travel a lot!! My father was a
school teacher for 27 years and retired two years ago. I've love
animals especially cats. I have 2 Mele and Alli. They are sooooo
neat!! Talk about a PERSONality!!! Besides all that I love to read
this and other notes and appreciate all the info. I get out of it. Not
    to mention the support.

My name is Veronica M. Stanley. Just call me Vicki. I've been
with DEC at Maynard (PKO3) in the Corporate Photo Library for
exactly 6 months. I do picture research for brochures, magazines,
slide shows. I graduated college two years ago with a BS in Media
Communications and a minor in fine art. To do my own photography
full time is my ultimate goal. But for now...

My outside, nonDEC activities tend to be my psychological salvation.
    I'm a non-meat eater, I'll do fish if it's fresh, so I'm not really
a lacto-ovo in the pure sense. I'm engaged to the man I've been
dating the last 8 years and we'll be married eventually. I do
historical reenacting, which entails camping, role playing, costume
design, historical research, cooking and anything else involving
the 17th and 18th Centuries, WWII, and sometimes the American Civil
War. I've been to England to photograph cathedrals and visited
all the Arthurian haunts. I'd love to know more about Wicca and/or
any other pagan religions as I've fallen away from Roman Catholicism
due to its belief system and mine coming into constant conflict.

I enjoy playing my tin-whistle. I adore cats but am presently feline-
less, due to a landlord who is animal less himself. I've started
growing herbs in my kitchen with mediocre success. Burning incense
in my apartment keeps the moths from entering, but the upstairs
tenants tend to raise a wary eyebrow.

I'd enjoy hearing from anyone else who can associate with the above.
    It's lonely out here...

I haven't entered an intro since =wn= V2 started, and my V1 intro is
much out of date. I'm still working in Spitbrook and am in my 8th year
full time with DEC. These days I work in the Compund Document
Architecture (CDA) program developing and fixing various utilities -
the CDA Viewer, the DDIF->PS converter, DECwindows PrintScreen, and
    coming soon, the ASN.1/DDIS compiler.

There have been several milestones in my life in the past few months,
I'm halfway through my masters in Enginering Management, I was promoted
to Software Engineer Senior, I joined in the exhilarating April 9
March on Washington, a new kitten picked me out (one of Sarah Kahn's
barn kittys!), and I became engaged to Marty Jack, a sometimes
womannoter, and always warm and sensitive human bean.

I've been a long time member of this conference, but I haven't always
been able to keep up. I write when I have something to say and the
time to type it in. This conference is a source of enlightenment
and entertainment. When I have time for only one non-work file this
    is it.

Hi all! I, too, am a new reader! Already, I feel that this notes
file is something I was destined to link up with! I am a sales
rep in the Prime Contractor District in the Washington, DC area.
My husband Ben is a Software Specialist here, and we live nearby
with our three children; Candace 16 1/2, Ryan 15, and Chase 11 months
and three weeks. (Call me crazy, but we're also trying for #4!)

I've been with DEC for almost eight years and feel like we really do
have a family here. It's great to take a break from the work and
read/share notes which remind us that we're human and not just a badge
number. Basically I've found that in just a few minutes a day you can
get to know someone a little better, and have your own life enriched in
    the process!!

I'm looking forward to reading this entire file!

I've been reading =wn= for a while, writing for a short while, and even
made a proposal of marriage (8.24) to someone in this conference :-),
and I have not introduced myself here or in any of the conferences I
     note in.

I'll start here, in =wn=, my favorite conference, because it was suddenly
just made painfully obvious to me that most (all?) of you only know me
in terms of the subject I've written most about in this conference.
I hope to give you a more complete picture of who I am...

     Basic info:
     -----------

o Born & raised in Orlando, Florida, as youngest of 3
(except for 1982 in high school when I lived with a family
        in Shinagawa-Ku, Tokyo, Japan.)

o I had a great family - my parents and siblings were extremely loving.
Their love has molded my entire existence. My father was a quiet
mathematician masquerading as an engineer. My mother was/is *very*
politically active and influential in the Republican party in the
state of Florida. A major personal accomplishment of mine in '88 was
getting this staunch conservative to solidly back a woman's right to
choice. My mom would be called by a state senator or house rep with an
issue to work or a constituent's problem, and she'd have the job done
within 4 phone calls or less. And heaven help the legislator she
campaigned for that voted in a manner she strongly disagreed with!
She would have party officials all over her or him within minutes
of reading the incriminating information in any of the 3-4 papers
she reads daily or political newsletters she receives. My friends in
high school would come over and debate her for hours at a time in the
family room. I'd be studying in an adjacent room and would
inevitably hear her say at least twice in the evening, "You kids just
don't read your history books!" I'd smile, and continue studying.

If my mom were a =wn=er, half her notes would get "set hidden" :-) !!

o As a teenager my life included work as a character at Walt Disney
World on a temporary seasonal basis (summers and all holidays; yes, the
'tunnels' are for real!), and as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at
the Orlando YMCA in the summer. Was into all sorts of water sports
that Florida has to offer, and was captain of the women's swim team
in high school [and am currently trying to figure out what to do
in these FRIGID natural bodies of water in New England :-)]. I swam
the 100 butterfly and 200IM in most swim meets.

o Graduated from Duke University in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
with a BSE in Electrical Engineering; was 1 class short of getting
a second major in Biomedical Engineering. Learned how to read
for comprehension, write analytically with somewhat acceptable style
and grammar, and solve technical problems. Played club water polo &
intramural basketball. Am an ACC basketball fanatic; tutored some of
Duke's basketball players in math and (believe it or not) EE classes
and therefore always got the inside scoop on the offense and defense for
the next game. Am still disgruntled with Johnny Dawkins for blowing
a double-pump turnaround backwards dunk in the final 2 minutes of the
NCAA Final Championship game in Dallas where Duke ultimately lost to
Louisville after being ahead for 38 minutes.

        First witnessed this white stuff falling from the sky freshman year;
woke up everyone in my dorm hall to let them know we were in for
a blizzard (turned out to be a 'dusting'). All the Northerner-types
yawned and went back to sleep; only a guy from Phoenix was interested
enough to brave the elements and attempt a snowball fight.

In summers I interned in a couple different places - at the electrical
systems division of the Saturn Corp. of General Motors, Martin Marietta
Aerospace, a small engineering firm, and a beach!

o Currently am hardware engineer in the Low End Systems division
in the Mill. The project occupying most (110%) of my time at the moment
is the (just announced!) DECsystem 5400 (MIPSfair). Am getting into
the software somewhat, since I'll soon need to understand device drivers
        written in C.

I really am enjoying Digital - it is by far the best technical
environment I've been in, and everyone I work with is really bright.
Still looking for a technical mentor-type who's familiar with LES.
I've been criticized for having a "hard edge" professionally, so I am
working on trying to understand the standards of acceptable
behavior and levels of aggression in women.

     o Am 23 (wishing I were 28), single, and leading a very
independent, active, and fun life in and around the Boston area.
Spend a lot of my spare time in Cambridge, with a non-profit
organization started by women I graduated with at Duke to publish a
newsletter that focuses on the issues facing female adolescents.
Currently in the middle of debates over the layout (I'm using Pagemaker
on my PC-AT w/a hand scanner) logos, pictures, etc...

My views on women have been influenced by the following:

In grade school and junior high school, I thought other girls were silly
and couldn't be trusted to keep a secret. My brother was my idol. I was
very much a tomboy and hung around him and his friends as much as they
     would let me.

In high school I felt somewhat better about other females and developed a
     few strong friendships.

But it wasn't till I went to Duke Univ. when I really began to be totally
impressed by women. The women I encountered there were incredible! I was
continually in awe of their individual strength, confidence, intelligence,
academic ability, political awareness, feminism, and diversity. Imagine
what a product like VAXnotes could have contributed to our collective
     strength and unity!

The members of =wn= have continued to enrich my understanding of women and
feminism, as well as providing positive female role models for me at a time
when I am searching for them. I'm happy to be here.

=WN= also permits me to discuss painful experiences as logically and
rationally as I can, with an emotional detachment not possible for me
(yet) when talking to another person. And when I'm not always emotionally
detached ... terminals don't mind tears.

                                                            nancy b.

My name's Diana Carroll, and I have returned to Digital after a year's
abscense (see note 2.76 for my original introduction.)

I just graduated from RPI with a degree in Computer Science, and just
started working here (for real this time) last Monday. (See, didn't
take me long to re-note :-). I am working on the LSE project for TLE
up in Nashua (ZKO). (That was one thing I didn't miss about DEC, all
the TLA's.)

Anyway, I love getting mail, so don't hesitate to write. I don't know
if any of you remember me from last summer, but I did make it to one of
the =wn= parties. Just don't ask me to remember which names go with
which faces!

Hi! Just a note to introduce myself. My name is Lisa and I am
currently working in the Advanced Technology Center Lab in Greenville,
S.C. I love my job and hope that it will soon be permanent. I am
interested in womens issues as far as being strongly pro-choice,
and hope to hear from others with similiar feelings. My husband
and I are currently undergoing studies for infertility(he already
had the boom lowered that he is sterile) so most of it centers on
me. We are hoping that with Artificial Insemination by Donor (AID)
will get us pregnant and we'll have a little bambino soon! I'll
try to keep everyone *abreast* of the situation, pun intended!

Hi, I work at HLO2 as a technical writer for SEG/CAD (CAD tools for
chip design and layout). I've been at DEC for 2 years and like it.

One of the best things is NOTES! And from what I've read over the last
two months, this is a great notesfile! Kudos to the moderators and
writers -- together, you've created an environment where almost
anything can be discussed without hurtful heat. Wide-ranging variety
of topics, too, like the wide-ranging variety of women's interests...

... Well, enough of that, back to me ... :-)

I graduated (oh, excuse me so much, *was* graduated...(!)) from Mount
Holyoke College, one of the five? colleges left from the original Seven
Sisters Schools (MHC, Bryn Mawr, Smith, Wellesley; Radcliffe, Vassar,
and one other I can't remember, sorry.) I got a degree in English and
Psychology. Spending four years in an all-female environment was, on
the whole, enriching. I missed some aspects of the typical college
social experience, but found that I developed a strong "sense of me".
I'm infinitely more confident than I was in high school -- thanks, MHC!

I love my mom dearly -- she's an old MHT (Mount Holyoke Type) herself.

Home for the last five years has been a rent-controlled apartment in
Brookline. I've worked at MIT, a management consulting firm, and a
    high-tech publicity agency; studied to be a technical writer at night;
and am a *big* fan of public transportation. Until she got married
last year (and took our cat!!), my roommate was a friend from college.
(Clarification: she's still my friend from college but she's no longer
my roommate. Slight joke here. Haha.)

I now have a slightly neurotic (aren't they all?!) black glossy cat
named Sheba and a tropical fish tank. (All fish from the relatively
friendly tetra family -- no fin-rippers allowed in *my* tank.)

My main hobby is to sing in a semi-professional acappella group called
the "Copley Cats" -- 12 women, and we've sung together for about four
years. We all call our weekly rehearsal night our "mental health"! I
guess I've always kept a part of my social life women-only, which adds
variety. I also volunteer as an exhibit interpretor for the Museum of
    Science. I *love* movies.

One sad thing is that my best friend is moving to Amherst next month to
study at Umass. I'll miss her terribly. Oh, well, I'll visit. Often...

I'm a fairly cheerful person. No, scratch that. I'm a cheerful
person. Currently single, but who knows -- my friends always predicted
I'd be the last to go, and so it is...and so far I'm enjoying life as
    it is!

You may have noticed that I like to write. A LOT. See you in the
    notesfile!

Hi everyone. I just realized I never introduced myself. My name
is Phyllis Koyner. I am a Corporate Account Administrator in the
New York Office. I've read Womannotes here and there over the past
couple of years but have only recently started to really keep up
and actually respond now and then. I've always considered myself
a feminist but have never really been active in the woman's movement.
(Other than monetarily). Lately I've been spurred on to action by
a group of robed individuals playing G-D and have become very involved
    with both NOW and NARAL.

I look forward to becoming an active member of this notesfile..

Hi Maggie and all other females participating,

My name is also Margaret but I am known as Mags. This has been
my fist ever nickname and was manufactured in Digital. However
I am 23 years of age, single but will be married to a great guy,
Ronnie in November of this year. I have been employed by Digital
for 2.5 years and until recently have been very happy. My previous
employments have ranged from a Hotel Receptionist to a Documentation
Specialist. I guess I should tell my present position in Digital.
I am a Buyer for the Operational Purchasing group, a job which I
    enjoy very much.

I have a brother of 10 years, 2 sisters, one 16 and the other 24.
My father was a oil rigger for most of his life and my mother, like
myself had various jobs. We are a close family and although I have
been living away from home for the past 2 years we still keep in
tough. (Maybe not as often as I should).

	Thats all for now...........................Regards Mags

As I made Mags aware ( .203 ) of the existence of this and other

My name is Frances Barron, I work as a purchasing specialist in
the Ayr manf Plant, Scotland. I have been with Digital for nearly
4 years now, but just discovered the existence Notes myself, about
2 mths ago and have been reading this file on and off for about
    3 weeks.

I am 31 years young, married to Alex, no children as yet.

I enjoy swimming, keep fit, hillwalking, cycling and numerous other
    hobbies/pastimes.

Look forward to contributing now and then..........

I've been a read/seldom write member of Womannotes for approximately two
years. I've been with Digital for 2 3/4 years. Currenty, I'm happily
working as a CUP tech writer in Marlboro, MA.

Outside of work, I'm:

- Happily "married"! :-)

- Involved with a feminist talk radio program that broadcasts out of WMBR
88.1 FM on the beautiful campus of MIT in Cambridge, MA (see note
661). It's really challenged me to grow as a feminist and womyn -- to
examine and address my biases, prejudices, and other "stuff" as well
as learning how to work collectively. It's also been an incredible
source of support and personal gratification.

- An avid reader of smut novels (Curious Wine), mysteries (Murder at the
Nightwood Bar) and an occasional "real" book (The Philosopher's Pupil)

- A closet jock who likes biking, swimming, waterskiing, tennis, volleyball,
   softball, basketball...

Here's to another great year of noting,

I guess it's about time I introduced myself... I've been a read-only noter for
almost a year now. I'm usually not shy, but I sometimes feel it would be
difficult to live up to all the eloquently written notes I find in this
conference!

Well anyway, I'm Sue, I've worked for DEC up in Nashua for a little over a year.
I came here right out of school (UConn) as a software engineer in database
languages. Up until a few weeks ago I was living with my old college roommie
and commuting from Maynard. Now I'm in Nude Hampster and paying no taxes!

I'm in a long distance relationship (Mark lives and works in CT) and dealing
with the unique problems and opportunies which arise. All in all, I *love*
living by myself but would like to see more of the man I love....

Gee, I don't usually like to get so personal with people I don't know, but I
feel like I already know a lot of you. Now let's see if I can become
read/write!

Ciao,
Sue

Hi -- I'm Mary Vaskas, a consultant in San Francisco SWS (PSS).

I've just begun reading this conference, since I have a little
more personal noting time free right now -- and having been
impressed by a number of woman-noters I've "met" over the
last few years, decided to drop in.

I'm a feminist and lesbian (not necessarily in that order),
and my primary personal noting to date has been in the
lesbian/gay/bi conference. "Lesbian issues", though, are
not usually distinct from "Women's issues", in my mind
(so, I may end up repeating myself in the two files, in
other words :-)).

Looking forward to good discussion...

This makes me feel like standing up in class the first day of school

I've been a temp(?) in the Peoria, Illinois office since April, 1988.
Currently I'm providing sales support on some of the desktop products
for demonstrations, presentations, etc. and being a technical writer/

    I'm single (again), 32, I have a 13 year old daughter (she's living
in Arizona with her father), bartend at a small neighborhood "tavern",
and love to read, play darts, garden and watch the seasons change.
The last one was the main reason I moved back to the midwest from
    Nevada/Arizona.

I'm very interested in making DECfriends through this file. There
seem to be so many interesting people noting in this conference,
I do sometimes wish I didn't live so far away.

But you can call me Dot.

I have worked for DEC for roughly 2 1/2 years if you include time
as a temp. I started out as a temp sr. secretary here at LMO2 when
I was pregnant with my daughter Aisha. I was hired permanently,
and went on maternity leave not long after! When I returned after
8 weeks of maternity leave, I found out that I was pregnant with
my son Jacob 2 weeks later! I am now a technical writer (edit/proof
specialist if you want to be technical about it) writing and
maintaining procedures for Quality Control. I have a B.A. in Secondary
English Ed (hated teaching though) and 1 year of grad school for
Teaching ESOL. I am hoping to get into software writing if I can
ever find out where that training prgram is offerred!!

I am interested in other cultures, theology and antiques. Mostly
I take care of my kids (now 21 mos. and 9 mos.) and my husband Arshad
(who is from Pakistan) and Abbey (the cat, my furry child).

    Thank God for Notes!

    Hello.
My name is Margaret Russell. I'm a technical writer and work in LJO2,
which is in Littleton, MA. I used to be in Nashua, NH at ZKO.
I've been with DEC over 2 1/2 years.

I've been a writer all of my working life. Sold my first free-lance
story at the age of 15 and was hooked -- probably forever -- on writing.
Besides technical writing (both hardware and software), I've done news-
papers, advertising, press relations, science writing, and statistical
interpretation. The last means turning numbers into words.

I put myself through college with free-lance writing, some
scholarships, some grants, and teaching writing. Teaching writing
was great fun. I've got my masters in communication theory.

My big love is reading. I also enjoy art, making art, going to
galleries, art history, and making my apartment aesthetically pleasing.
I like animals, the environment, good wine, and good company.

    Pleased to meet you all.

    Hello to Everyone;

My name is Vivian Rankin, I've been employed by Digital for the past
2.5 years. I currently work within the Design Engineering Group as
a Technical Administrator. I'm originally from California but fell

For all of you out there who still wonder I'll set the record
straight. A true Scotsman wears NOTHING under his kilt, (but prays
    for warm weather).

As my Scotsman is my second marriage 'we' have a big family, six
children in all. We enjoy the simple pleasures life has to offer and
by most peoples standards probably live a rather dull and boring life.

Reading and participating in the numerous notes files has become one
of the 'simple' pleasures I'm glad Digital offers it's employees.

    Bye for now; Viv

	Hi,

I suppose I should introduce myself. I have been one
of those 'read only' noters for a while but with the
possiblity of this becoming a members conference I
wanted to make sure that I was on the list. My name
is Connie Castine. I just completed 9 years with DEC
on February 23. I have 3 children, 2 daughters Christa,
who is 19 (with a new daughter of her own) and Brenda
who is 13. My son, Philip is 15. I live in Colorado
Springs and work in the Customer Support Center. I am
I am currently working for the DIS/SD development group
	as a Programmer/Analyst.

2.238Until later....maybe.SSDEVO::GALLUPthe passion of reasonFri Mar 02 1990 14:0645

Well, I started here in this note, so it's only right that I
	 end here.

When I first came here, I found this to be a wonderful
supportive place......but it's become a pit of vipers for me.

I am increasingly uncomfortable with the method of discussion
some members of this community use. And it's become apparent
to me in the last few months that my ideals and my opinions
are not those of certain prolific members here. And the
contention that has arisen because of my alternate opinions
has caused quite a bit of discomfort in this community.

At this time it has gotten to the point where I can no longer
respect these noters when they begin in on me. I have
tried to practice great restraint in responding, but it's
gotten too much for me and I can't handle it anymore.

Since disrespect of other noters is against PP&P 6.54, I
realize that I can no longer continue as a member of this
	 conference without exhibiting that disrespect.

This conference has given me a lot of things......deeper
understanding, more compassion, wonderful friends in addition
to some tremendous support. I'm going to miss that. So I
sit here, and I cry, but I know it's what I have to do for my
own sanity and my own well-being.

Some people say "it's just notes", but it's more than that to
me, it's a part of me. This conference hits a lot of
subjects that are very near and dear to my heart, and it's
gotten too much when I'm deliberately misunderstood, my
opinions are shot down as it they are not important and I'm
treated as if I'm not worthy of respect. I'm here to learn,
but I'm also here to express my views and to discuss
	 them....rationally.

So, I'm taking a leave of absence from Womannotes. For those
interesting in talking women's issues with me, I can be found
in soc.women and soc.feminism on the USENET.

Hello, I've been a read-only noter for several months now but have just

Hmm, I always thought I was registered

I've been with DEC for only 2 1/2 years, a lot of people are surprised
it hasn't been longer, I guess I just dug in from day one and got
    involved with things here.

I work at MKO (Merrimack, NH) on the Customer Assistance Hotline

I don't have the patience to contribute to a lot of the Hot topics
in here. I can't figure out how I got on the top 50 list, I guess
I must have my pet topics. I think arguing should be done off line.
I co-moderate the new close conference for the Adoption Triad.

Outside of work I participate in many sports. I am active in the Digital
Woman's basketball league. Joining the softball league this season.
Snow ski one night a week but that seasons over. Must be time to
dust off the tennis racket...pull out the water skis...pump up the

work for the blind and the Red Cross and am an avid reader of
    Non-Fiction mostly business oriented books.

And that is were I'm coming from...

    Hi all!

I just got into this conference, so I have a lot of catching up
to do. When I have the time(ha!!) you'll see me in here.

    Vitals:

Officially I have to sign my checks with Deborah, but only my mother
calls me that (thank god(ess) she's in Florida now)--- everyone
else calls me Debbi or Deb.

Been here at Westfield (Mass) all 15 1/2 years of working at DEC.

14 1/2 years of that I've spent as a Mfg Tech., both boards and
systems. Currently working on the Teammate II line as part of a
team. Our team pioneered the team concept here at Westfield and
we're still going strong. It seems that our product is going to
Kanata in a few months (hi to anyone from there!), thanks to politics.
Oh well, what's next?? we're ready!

I became a Technician back when there was very few women in the
field and it's been difficult at times. I took in house courses
and worked my way through all they had to offer, then applied for
anything technical that came up. I got a job as a Test Tech repairing
boards for LA36 (remember those?), and I felt the resentment from
the first minute. The guy that "trained" me barely showed me how
to opperate the tester and which prints to use before he walked
away. After struggling with the unfamiliar for about a week while
feeling stupid, (and going home to cry in frustration) everything
fell into place and I felt like a real Technician. (I found out
later that Techs don't know "everything", they just know where to
go to get the information.) Now I'm real carefull when I train someone
to sit and make sure that they understand the process and I answer
all questions--I don't want anyone to go through what I had to.

Enough about work--- home is a six room house that my SO Cindy
and I bought about 4 1/2 years ago. Our 5 cats and 1 dog allow
us to live there in relative chaos. I'll be 38 in June, and haven't
yet figured out where the time has gone! Along with the time spent
with the animals, I usually find time to read--SF(hello all you
SF readers, I noticed there are a lot of you out there!), New Age
books, bios, gardening, religion, science, magazines, newspapers,
the back of cereal boxes(oops, you wern't suppose to know that :-)
in other words anything I can get my little hands on. Conversely,
I enjoy writing but have little time for that.

I have been spending more time working out in the exercise room
here as well as finishing up my physical therepy after an operation
on my right knee in September. Now maybe I can lose some of this
extra weight!! Before my little accident (2 years ago), I played
softball, raquetball, rode my 10 speed and went bowling. Hopfully
I can get back to doing some of those things. My other sedetary
activities include cross stich, crossword puzzles, movies (vcr),
some TV shows (like Roseanne, and Alien Nation, and Star Trek:TNG)
    and Nintendo games.

I have been involved with the gay/lesbian group here at Westfield
for about 2 years and find it very rewarding. I enjoy doing VoD
work and would like to see more people become involved. I've been
interested and involved in women's issues for as long as I can
remember. Having grown up in the Sixties, I was influenced by all
that was going on around me. I think that growing up in the shadow
of a great woman's college didn't hurt either. I lived for most
of my younger years about 1 mile away from Mount Holyoke College,
I even worked there part time while going to high school--I guess
the atmosphere just rubbed off on me!!

If you look for me in other conferences you'll find me in the
gay/lesbian note(of course), Feline, Star Trek, SF, Canine and
occasionally in TV(only 'cause Alien Nation doesn't have it's own
    note!)

    Glad to be here...

    Talk to you soon.

    Debbi

At any rate: I'm Lauren Foster, reliability engineer for another month,
soon to be the proud new analyst of SEM/EDX data for our semiconductor
development group. I'm 26 for now, and after several months of
debating, I can say that I am a recognizable feminist. However, I am
also (of equal importance) a strong supporter of civil rights and
affirmative action, especially for African-Americans, which I am, and a
supporter of freedom of religion, to protect my choice to be Buddhist.

In most other areas, I run somewhat conservative. But the above ones
make the conservatism pretty hard to find! :-)

    Sooooo... can I vote now?
2.252PACKER::WHARTONSapodilla gal...Tue Mar 13 1990 17:3628
I almost never formally introduce myself in notes. It's no fun talking
about myself. But I'd like to vote. :-)

I'm Karen Wharton. I will continue to be a Package Engineer in Hudson
for one more month, then I will be moving to Minneapolis (MPO) to
assume a position in Sales Support. I like changes. I was born and
"raised" in Guyana. I and my family moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1981. I
then moved to Boston in 1982 and have been here since. I like
Massachusetts and New York. I would like explore some of the other
states in the Union. Minnesota here I come.

I'm one of three moderators of Blacknotes. My black awareness is much
more acute than my feminist awareness. Fear not, I am in tuned with
the feminine part of my being! :-) Most likely I'll continue to be a
    read-mostly/write-hardly member of Womannotes.

I'm 24, unmarried, no kids, no pets... I don't have any specific
hobbies; I do a little of everything. When I read I tend to read about
the black experience so naturally my favorite authors are James Baldwin
and Toni Morrison. I also read some Caribbean dialect. The most recent
one was a Sistren Collection. Musically speaking my taste runs from
reggae to calypso to rap to R&B to jazz. One of my favorite pastimes
is cooking - then eating what I cooked - quite a therapeutic
combination. I don't have recipes. I just cook as I go along.

Anyway, that's enough for now. See ya around.

to speak spanish so that I can communicate with my finance's family...

Right at this point in time my hobbies include spending time with my
fiance, playing with and watching my three (yes, you read right!!),
three cats (Dogger, Trouble, and Peppare [even the vet spells her name

I feel a little pretentious doing this, but...

Although I've rarely been a prolific writer in here, I've
been an avid reader for most of my 2+ years at DEC. However,
other commitments are claiming my time, and much as I dislike
dropping out of this community, I'm afraid reading =wn= is
taking time away from other activities which I've given

I have just completed a suitable course.

I find your conference very interesting.

    Hello.

I don't know if I have an old note in here, or not. I've been
in and out of this conference for quite some time, I think even
before it became "-v2". I have an affection for this file because
moderator ZURKO and I used to work together.

In '86-'87 I was a software engineer with Digital in Marlboro, Mass. Since
Sept '88 I have been a contract technical writer, sometimes at
Digital, sometimes not. I never know when I'm going to
be able to be part of this conference. But I just keep seeming
to end up back at Digital, so I've decided to join up (here).
Right now I bounce between Hudson NH and Maynard Mass. So far
I have survived the "death to contractors" :-) ruling of last January...
    so far so good.

I write manuals about software products, sometimes network design
tools, sometimes graphics-related packages. It depends, of course,
    on the job.

I am married, no children but I look forward to them "someday",
and in my (ha!) spare time play music and study martial arts
reasonably seriously, although still at a novice level. I think
it is fair to say that I spend most of my time in what some folks
would call "traditionally male" realms. Right now I am feeling
    comfortable with that.

Looking forward to learning a lot from experiences outside my own...

    Susan

    Hello!

I'm Linda Belliveau, a technical writer in LJO2. On Memeorial Day I'll
have been at DEC one year (I think I was one of the last few people
    hired from outside the company.

I've been a tech writer for three years. In my previous career, I
worked as a nutritionist (I'm still an R.D.).

I live in Woostah with my lover Yvonne, two dogs, two cats, and
    two birds.

I enjoy reading, films, touch football, biking, racquette ball, and
    running.

I'm mostly a read-only person, but if I have info or strong feelings
    around an issue I write.

Until recently, I've found this file to be very enjoyable, and
educational. There are some really elequent writers in WN!
My project is gearing up for a deadline so maybe the
pitbull noting that's occurred will have blown over when I have time
    to read again.

I am Ann Dillon and work in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in Customer
Services. My background is in contract administration and I am
presently working a pilot project for SOA with one of our focused
    accounts (RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co).

I am a single parent, my son is 10 years old. His father has been out
of the picture since several months prior to Matt's birth.

I have been reading this conference for about a week, at the suggestion
of my manager who is a very unique and visionary man. I have gained
some new insight into some old issues since I started reading.

I probably am not so gifted at words as some of the noters but promise
that I'm every bit as sincere.
