398.0. "NOW" by DINER::SHUBIN (Time for a little something...) Mon Jul 20 1987 17:44

    Someone asked for addresses for NOW (National Organization for Women)
    recently. I just got the monthly newsletter, but can't find the earlier
    note. Here's a new topic for NOW; let's see what's going on in chapters
    around the country.

    The Acton (Mass) Area NOW chapter is at
    	NOW
	PO Box 642
	West Acton, MA  01720
	617/264-4NOW

    To join, send $35 ($20 to national, 5 to state and 10 to the chapter).
    If you cannot afford $35, send less. The form offers a check-off
    labeled "I can't afford the $35, so am taking advantage of the reduced
    rate offered by National NOW ($16-34)." They want your name, address
    and home and work phone numbers. Make checks payable to Acton Area NOW.

    Note that this is no longer the National Organization *OF* Women, but
    *FOR* Women. Not only are there male members (e.g., me), but there are
    officers who are men, and I think that one chapter just elected a male
    chair. The Acton chapter has at least 2 men in offices.

    The current newsletter offers a calendar of events, information about a
    fundraiser in August, information on the upcoming National NOW
    conference (which was held last week), news of previous meetings, board
    meetings, issues that you should write to your representatives about,
    information on the march for gay and lesbian civil rights, meetings on
    pay equity awareness, checking prices on haircuts for women vs men
    (hey, we discussed that here, too!), and some small ads.

    What's going on in other chapters?

    There's LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of things going on all over the country.
     The national convention was FANTASTIC!!!

    HIGHLIGHTS: Molly Yard "& co." were elected by a 2-1 margin over
                 Noreen Connell "& co.".

                 The March for Equality was a tremendous success. Over
                 2,000 people marched. The speakers were DYNAMIC!!

    	         Congresswoman Patricia Schoeder gave a TREMENDOUS speech
                 to the delegates on running for President of the
                 United States. NOW pledged to raise $350,000.00 for
                 her campaign immediately following her address.
                 Massachusetts alone, has pledged to raise at least
                 $12,000.00

    Did anyone else go to the conference?? What were your impressions?
398.2Boston NOWWITNES::DOUGHERTYDOUGHERTYMon Jul 20 1987 18:1914
    I should have explained in my reply that I'm a semi-active member
    of Boston NOW. For those of you closer into the city,
    the address is:

    971 Commonwealth Avenue
    Boston, MA
    617-782-1056

    The Massachusetts NOW (state level) offices are also at the same
    street address.

398.3Older People Are Years Ahead!DISHQ::FULLERWed Jul 22 1987 14:105
    Heard very complimentary remarks on a "talk show" concerning Molly's
    Dynamic speech at the NOW convention. Also heard that she's 70
    yrs. of age!! Is that true? - Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw
    - Older people are Years Ahead! Maybe NOW things will start moving
    again.
398.4I was there, too...USMRM3::CGILLARDTue Jul 28 1987 20:0415

    I was a delegate at the Conference also. It felt very empowering
    to be a participant - the decisions made there were taken seriously
    not only by the women (and men) at the Conference, but by the
    national media as well.

    I learned a little, too, about the dissention within the NOW
    organization from some of the delegates from several other states.
    (I'm a member of the South Middlesex (MA) Chapter.)

    It was a wonderful experience to have been there. (Wasn't Linda
    Ellerbee GREAT??) I'd like to hear some more of your experiences
    at the Conference...and share mine. Send MAIL?

:-) How will those who are angry, but don't know they are, know they
     should attend?
