42.0. "(Responses to Introductions)" by RAINBO::TARBET (Margaret Mairhi) Fri Jul 11 1986 17:08

It's hard to know how to allow responses to something in an "introductions"
string. It doesn't seem like a good idea to let the material stay (since
then the introductive nature is quickly lost), but it seems unfair and
improper simply to summarily delete it. Maybe this is a reasonable
compromise?

This is a reply to note 2.78 by Janice Fernetta asking about non career
parts of this notesfile.

Hi Janice,

Welcome aboard! Despite assertions other where, I don't think this notes
file is just for career questions. This just below is from the welcoming
note.

Welcome to =WOMANNOTES=, the notefile dedicated to topics of interest
  to women.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A directory (DIR at the notes prompt) revealed the following topics that
might interest you. This is just a few I've picked out from remembering
the discussions they contain. I'm sure I've missed some very informative
and interesting notes (found another one just now checking a name). By
all means read through the whole notesfile. If there are issues that
haven't been addressed or just things you're thinking about that you'd like
to hear what other folks have to say, start a new note!

The notes. . .

Definitely not work related. . .

Note 36 Co-ed education. Not much use to you right now, but what about your
kids? or you if you go after a graduate degree (o.k. work intrudes. . .)

Note 58 Bugsy Taber traded her very own S.O. to another softball team.
Note and replies talk about what issues that raised at home and how they
could be dealt with.

Note 74 Experiences with Girl Scouts. Useful, if you want to help the
kids you have decide on the scouts.

Note 75 Medical Issues for women. Hysterectomies, IUDs ect.

Note 77,78 Deal with establishing a woman's credit rating. This is vital
for a woman who chooses to stay home with her children.

Note 89 How spouses deal with different levels of social energy. Good
discussion of dealing with different life styles (not quite the word I
want) in one home.

Note 90 Etiquette of birth control, talking about it to your kids (next
note actually).

Note 95 Appropriate gifts for kids. What do you want you kids to have?
What impact might their toys have on their psyche. New note not much
discussion but seems like an interesting topic. . .

Two that I didn't think about till here, are the topic on keeping your own
name (8?) titled something like When is a Rose . . .

and

The note requesting ideas for the Non-Sexist wedding (how is that going
anyway?).

Work Related but also home related. . .

29 Having it all. A long impassioned discussion on the "New" super women.

73 Opportunities/experiences for working part time at DEC. Several with
comments from people like you (did I really say that? Send before
midnight. . . sigh. To much TBS late night) who want to be close to their
kids while they're growing up. These folks also wanted/needed to keep some
money coming in the door.

Well, that doesn't cover nearly all

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well if you went back to the beginnings of both notes you could
    tell by their origins....

The note for women was started first and is titled "What do Women
do at Dec?" It has kind of evolved into an introduction note.
Then a few notes later Jym Dyer started a note, rather tongue
in cheek, I believe, saying to in effect that the note was in
"keeping with the separate but equal nature of the conference".
His note was introductions from men.

I guess it just stayed that way because nobody had any problem
    with it.

Congratulations. I would suggest, however, that you think of it
as a "Direct" position. The only permanent things are death and
taxes. As a contract Technical Writer at Raytheon, I worked alongside
some who jumped at the chance to become "permanent", only to see
them laid off at the end of the project.

I suppose this is a reponse to my own introduction.

Now that Jon and I have the same last name, we have decided to live in the
same country. To this end, I will be leaving european headquarters as of
15-May and Geneva as of 27-May to join him in England.

As you can see this gives me just two more weeks on the net ... ack, withdrawal.

With any luck I will resurface either in DEC in the UK or the US this summer.
As soon as we've picked the country I can start the job hunt.
(Maybe I should start a topic on moving for love before I go ;-).

I'm sure Martin can translate Zoziau (or Z. can pull in Mac from the French
notefile?).

I'd just like to say "au revoir" to everyone. Thank you for your all you've
shared. I've enjoyed "meeting" you all.

the excellent translation service. Well, thanks for
all you've done, hope there is happiness at the end
of your trip. Wish I'd paid attention in all those
years of French classes, though. Au revoir, Dana.

This seems to be the best place to put this....

Today at lunch time a blond young man with a package under his
arm walked into my office and said "Hi, I'm Jym Dyer." We had
corresponded off and on but never met. Jym is leaving DEC as of
tomorrow. I have an address for him so that he can find out
about the time and place for the next womannotes party in July.

Jym began note 7 - introductions from men, and must have been
one of the first men to join this file.

He was very pleasant person finally meet and talk to in person.

I'm putting this in here now, while things are relatively calm,
so that if my leaving happens to correspond to an upheaval in the
file, people won't think I left with hard feelings.

My contract ends when the month ends, so after 31-July I won't be
noting for . . . who knows how long? I'll be going back to full-time
novelling (and I am looking forward to that!)

My present plans call for me to come back some time next year, but if I
hit the best-seller list, it won't be necessary. And if I do hit the
best-seller list (lots of smiley faces here) I will put on the biggest
autograph party Nashua has ever seen -- and you'll all be invited!
