69.0. "Ideas Needed" by 7195::GORSKI () Tue Aug 19 1986 20:27

I am a college summer hire and will be returning to school shortly
and I face a rather large challenge. I am in charge of running a fund
raising campaign for women's crew (rowing). I have been a member of
the 'varsity' women's team for 3 years and will be returning for my
4th year. I put varsity in quotes as we are not recognized or funded
by the college. Therefore we rely on donations and fund raisers. This
works fine for the men's team as they have a large alumni network and
have had two boats donated in the past two years. The women's team
however is relatively new and has no such luck. What we really need
for our spring season is a new boat if we hope to be truly
competitive. The problem, it costs $8,000.00 and the oars are another
$1,600.00. Anyone have any great fund raising ideas? The one's we've
come up with so far are raffles, selling T-shirts, and of course
bothering wealthy alum. Does anybody have any ideas for things to
raffle off? (Better yet, does anybody know George Steinbrenner's
address? He's the wealthiest alum we know of and rumor has it that
he's just dying to get things named after him!) Any input would be
appreciated!!

    Try looking in the ADS::FUNDRAIS notesfile. I saw one good idea
    in there on selling birdseed. Press KP7 or SELECT to add it to
    your NOTE DIRECTORY.

    Where are you located? A neighbor of mine in West Acton makes the
    oars for a number of Olympic teams. His name's Piantadosi (sp?),
    maybe you can hit him up for a discount.

    Try writing to the women who have graduated to see if any of them
    can donate items for a raffle or silent auction, or raise money
    for you where they live. Having graduated from a woman's college
    I know the alums are very loyal to the school. Maybe the women
    who went before you may be more interested in helping their
    younger sisters out.

	    One of the things we did when present new ideas to our coll-

69.6As long as they're writing checks anyway...BACH::SHUBINGo ahead - make my lunch!Fri Aug 22 1986 02:2015
When I was an undergrad, I was on the college ambulance corps. We faced a
similar problem -- too little money and too little respect. Someone had the
bright idea of getting a line on the tuition bill. Right there along with
"Do you want to give $1 for NYPIRG?", "Do you want to give $$$ for
tuition?" was "Do you want to give $1 for 5-Quad Volunteer Ambulance
Service?" (There were 5 living quadrangles, hence the name).

It worked like a charm. Within a year or so, we had a new ambulance (*not*
cheap) and a nice bank balance.

Now, your school might not put the women's rowing team on the bill, but they
might put women's sports generally. It probably took a lot of convincing,
so I don't imagine it would happen too quickly, but it's a good idea. For
the record, this was at SUNY Albany.

69.7Gary has all his oars in the water!RSTS32::TABERFri Aug 22 1986 15:3812
    Gary Piantedosi lives at 257 Arlington Street, West Acton. His
    workshop is on Central Street and easy to get to. We used to live
    next to Gary and Diana on Arlington Street.... He charges VERY
    reasonable prices and his oars are legendary.

    Fundraising dinners were a big hit for us, especially if we could
    line up the right speakers... but then, this approach takes money
    to make money...

    Good luck --
