468.0. "Internal Job Openings" by VIKING::TARBET (Margaret Mairhi) Thu Sep 03 1987 14:56

There has been some interest in posting job openings in this
conference as an internal equivalent of Affirmative Action
    advertising in minority newspapers.

This of course would only apply to jobs in fields or organisations
in which an AA motivation is clear, and we request that anyone
wishing to post such a notice clear it with a moderator first.

Please post the job title and salary grade as part of the response
title and, when the job has been filled, change the title to
    "filled".

We have an internal opening for an Engineer I in NRO5. This person's
responsibilities would be to: interface with (internal) customers and
provide technical consultatin on problems brought to the lab; perform
analyses using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Ion Chromatography, X-Ray
Flourescence, and Electro-Chemistry; prepare technical reports which
summarize the results of the experimental findings; use data analysis
packages to evaluate data and prepare graphical and tabular
presentations.

Requirements: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Materials or a closely
related field, two years industrial laboratory experience Engineering
or Manufacturing groups.

We need this person ASAP, and are willing to relocate. It has thus
far been very difficult finding anybody internally, which is why we
are trying here. Needless to say, both women and men (and any other
genders you happen to know of) are welcome to apply.

Contact Stan at GCANYN::JACKSON.

From the mail Bonnie and I have received on this subject, it's
evident that I should have made it clear in .0 that

    a) we would expect that any postings made here be made also in the
general jobs file *and* in the other minority notefiles (e.g.,
=blacknotes=, =gde= ). Any exception would need to be *well*
    justified.

    b) corporate policy 2.05 supports ...indeed requires!... that AA
goals be considered in internal recruiting.

The req has been in the job book two weeks, and I just got it into
COOKIE::JOBS (#1497.0). While I understand they are particularly
interested in minority/women, the number of candidates (of any
race, gender, sexual orientation, whatever) has been underwhelming
    to say the least.

As maggie says this is well within the realm of AA and valuing
differences. I have heard so many stories about people working
as secretaries when they have excellent technical skills -- the
people hiring seem unwilling to disassociate their skills and
background from the fact that they aren't CURRENTLY using those
particular skills. I can assure you all that is NOT the situation
in this lab or with this manager; people have joined our group from
working in a bookstore (me), in security, etc.

This is a win-win situation: _we_ need better resources for finding
internal candidates, and a large number of _you_ are unhappy in
    your present jobs.

    I am building a new, *high*-visibility systems-engineering group from
scratch here in PCSG, and I have the following openings, all of which
    are described in OASS::JOBS 493.*:

1 Documentation Manager (L23 Principal Technical Writer)
1 Architecture Manager (J07 Engineering Supervisor)
1 Evaluation Manager (J07 Engineering Supervisor)
3 Systems Architects (J09 Principal Engineers)
2 Tools Developers (J11 Senior Engineer)
1 Performance Engineer (J11 Senior Engineer)
3 Systems Evaluators (J11 Senior Engineer)
1 Lab Manager (E73 Engineering Tech IV)
1 Software Tech (J95 Diagnostic Engineering Aide)

Please note that I made a mistake in .0 in saying that Russ Whyte
is on node VIKING. He's really on SPCTRM, and the copy should be
sent to him on that node.

As I hope you all know already, I would welcome applications from
    the members of this community.

I have been trying to fill this req for some time. Acoustics experts
are hard to come by however, and I am now open to bringing in someone
at the Engineer I level and training him/her.

Requirements: BA/BS or equivalent, good learner, some knowledge of any
of the following: Materials, Physics, Failure Analysis, Wave
Propagation, Electronic Components. Will work with minimal supervision
once trained, technical writing and presentations will be required.

This could be filled internally by someone looking for a change
in fields and a variety of different problems to solve, or by a
    "new-college hire".

(FWIW: this is in OASS::JOBS and will be going in blacknotes once
    I get permission).

The following page contains a posting from the Jobs Notes Conference
for a Principal/Consulting Engineer. We are looking for a database
    expert.

I have recently joined this team as the Project Leader, Beth Kernan is
the Engineering Supervisor, David Hartzband is the Development Manager
and Consulting Engineer. David reports to Norma Abel.

All the people in the AI Technology Group work very hard at creating
an environment where the gifts of all individuals are welcomed and
rewarded. Our team is moving on an aggressive schedule where there is
plenty of room for people to grow and shine.

Beth and I look forward to discussing this position with interested
    candidates.
