572.0. "ARCNet" by HGOVC::STEPHENCHENG () Tue Apr 15 1997 11:57

    Not sure if this is the appropriate Notes to ask:
    If not, please point me to the right Notes file.

    A customer asked if we support ARCNet in any of our systems. Does
    the 4100 or any Alphaserver supports network cards for ARCnet?

    Thanks in advance.

    They must be kidding ...... I'm not even sure if Arcnet is supported in
    most Intel systems these days! You might check the Microsoft Hardware
    Compatibility List (HCL) to see if anyone provides an Arcnet card that
    has Alpha NT drivers. That would be your only hope. Clearly no VMS or
    UNIX support.

    Sounds like an opportunity to upgrade their network......

572.2What is the customer/application?USPS::FPRUSSFrank Pruss, 202-232-7347Sat May 31 1997 18:0313
    Just curious, who is the customer?

    ARCnet fans generally would not consider anything else an "upgrade".

    My customer insisted on it as they required the extremely low latency
    it could provide for their dedicated message passing using a homw-brew
    protocol. This was about three years ago, so maybe they could get what
    they need with 100 Mbit Ethernet today.

    Of course, we couldn't do it, on either Alpha or Intel NT, at the time,
    so they landed on QNX.
