430.0. "4000to4100" by HGOVC::NANDAN () Fri Jan 24 1997 03:10

    Suppose a customer buys an AlphaServer 4000, and then later wants
    to upgrade to an AlphaServer 4100, aside from the marketing
    issues, what exactly needs to be done.

    Since the drawer is the same, I guess it is a change of the
    backplane/motherboard/whatever. And all other parts should be
    reusable. But then, what exactly is involved ?

    This is an attractive option to the customer - moving from 4000 to
    4100 - something that would have meant a box-upgrade in the case
    of 2000 to 2100.

    Can someone please let me know the details on this.

    Thanks in advance.

430.1BOX UPGRADE FOR 4000 TO 4100VYGER::HENDERSONLFri Jan 24 1997 12:4015
    Sorry, but only a box upgrade is offered.

    Parts to order are;

    DA-51Z1J-AA  AS4000 TO AS4100 UNIX UPG
    DN-51Z1L-AA  AS4000 TO AS4100 WNT  UPG
    DY-51Z1K-AA  AS4000 TO AS4100 OVMS UPG

    The backplane and licences are the only difference but due to reason of
    ease of instalation and future 4000 Box strategy it was decided to only
    offer BOX swap upgrades with mandatory return of 4000 box.

430.2does this mean system drawerTROOA::MSCHNEIDERmartin.schneider@tro.mts.dec.comFri Jan 24 1997 18:273
    Sorry, but please interpret.... is this a system drawer complete swap?
    I still presume you keep the CPU and memory boards to move the new
    drawer?
430.3POBOXB::BAKFri Jan 24 1997 22:399
Yes this upgrade is a system drawer swap. You get new sheet metal + power supply
+ mother/IO boards. This way you get a tested base drawer.

You transfer your CPU/memory +IO options.

We determined that the probablity of doing damage by just shiping out a new
motherboard was too high since to replace it is a total system teardown.

430.4Thanks, and any comments ?HGOVC::NANDANSat Jan 25 1997 00:2024

    Les, Martin & Dennis,

    Thank you for your informative responses.

    I read about a 4000A in earlier notes (don't know the details
    though). I guess thats the reason its preferable to do a box
    upgrade. i.e a 4000 to 4100 upgrade may be slightly different from
    a 4000A to 4100 upgrade.

    (Incidentally is there also a 4100A somewhere in the works?)

    However, the user usually is scared off by the words "box upgrade"
    since they think there is a higher cost involved. In this case we
    will have to be careful in using the words "system drawer upgrade"
    to imply the rest of the box - the pedestal/cabinet, SW shelves,
    etc remain the same. This, ofcourse, is besides the CPU, memory,
    I/O controllers that are reused.

    Any comments ?

    It is a system box swap, the CPU, Memory and PCI options are retained
    and used in the BA30A-AA 4100 Box (comes with the upgrade), only the
    BA30C-AA 4000 (original) Box is returned.

    Re: .4

    What was planned to become the 4000A is now being called an AlphaServer
    4000 with an I/O upgrade. See note 351.* if you need more information.
    The I/O upgrade has not yet been announced.
