560.0. "CPU's add-on problem from 3rd CPU." by DEKPS1::BYUNGHOONKAN (The laugh is the best medicine) Fri Apr 04 1997 08:54

Hi !

I've installed Alpha Server 4100 " Pedestal System " with 4 Cached CPU's.
 since last week.

But I have a suffering problem as descriped 93.23 in this note conference.

Actully two CPU's already shipped and two CPU's shipped separately for add-on.

It seems to work fine with 2 CPU's ,but illegal characters displayed on OCP
and hang-up the system after installing 3th CPU as soon as power on.

Also no display on the console terminal. And I checked the PCM module as
recommanded 93.23 but Power Control Module 54-24117 Rev is F03 .

And I replaced it with another one but same.

BIOS and Firmware version is the highest I have seen.

I tried to fix the problem , replacing CPU , but same.

Now I have installed successful dUNIX V4.0a without this problem.

Any ideas and hints ?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks & Best regards,

B.H.Kang

    thanks.

    What speed CPUs?

If 466 MHz, or possibly even if 400 MHz, you should make sure you're
using V4.8-5 (V3.9 FW Update CD) or V4.8-6 (FW Web pages) SRM console.
As noted elsewhere, V4.8-6 is required if using 466 MHz CPUs. Earlier
versions of console would occasionally exhibit problems re: IIC/OCP
writes/reads due to a subtle timing issue with the faster CPUs and
    corresponding faster I/O access times.

HI,

Can you please reverify the memory size/type. 64Mb memory was only available
during the prototype build and was never productized.

560.6Yes, you're right.DEKPS1::BYUNGHOONKANThe laugh is the best medicineThu Apr 10 1997 10:437
    Hello !

Yes,you're correct. The size of memory is 512Mb.

    Thanks & sorry for confusing.

So, where did the SHOW CONFIG display with a 128MB and a 64MB memory
pair come from? Is everything else correct in said display, including
    revisions of CPU, IODs, etc.?
560.8Main B'd problem.DEKPS1::BYUNGHOONKANThe laugh is the best medicineSun Apr 27 1997 09:2517
    Sorry for late answer.

Actully I only did'nt check the memory size because MEM does not cause
to happen this problem. So I only checked the firmware revision from
    console and H/W revision.

Except this I modified he list from manual.

Last week I replace main B'd and fixed it. Two of three big register was
bent when add-on the CPU's at first time so account engineer touched it
to insert last CPU and seems pin was brocken, I'm not sure this resters
    cause the problem ?

    Anyway thank you.
