253.0. "Looking for independent Baptist church" by CASDOC::MEAGHER (In folly ripe, in reason rotten) Tue Aug 31 1993 13:17

Hello everyone:

My 18-year-old nephew from Tennessee is going to be living with me in Groton,
Mass. while he studies music composition at New England Conservatory in Boston.

He wants to find a church somewhere in the area (he's willing to drive).
Preferably, the church would be an independent Baptist fundamentalist church.

He's very fundamentalist in his beliefs, but is politically liberal. I'm not
sure exactly what he wants, and maybe he's not, either. For example, he might
find a non-Baptist church that suits him more than a Baptist church. He's been
a devout Christian for 8 or 10 years, and was the organist in his church in
Tennessee.

I think he'll just have to go visit various churches to find out one he likes
best, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks for any help.

Does anyone know anything about the West Acton Baptist Church?

I believe the American Baptist church is a break off from the Southern
Baptists and has a rather liberal slant.

I have sent mail to the author of .0 with an offer to check our church
directory for an independant baptist church in the Groton area.

    He might try --

Park Street Church -- downtown Boston, active student groups and
some from New England Conservatory participate

Grace Chapel -- in Lexington, closer to Groton

I thought Park Street was 4Cs, not Baptist.

Grace Chapel gets all the singles. %^) I understand their young people's
group is "happening" or at leats have not heard of any changes. :-)
I should check these people out one of these days when I'm not so
tied to my own church family. Oh forget I even suggested it; I'll
never have that opportunity.

    Grace Chapel is nondenominational.

And the single groups (there are several) at GC are thriving.

I thought there was an Independent Baptist Church right in Groton.
American Baptist Church are part of a convention.

How about Grace Baptist Church in Marlboro.

I attended the First Baptist Church of Groton back in the late 80's.
It is located right on Rt. 119 in Groton. Pastor Wendell Mullen and
his son are co ministering at the church.

I would say it is quite family oriented and they believe in the
sovereignty of the Word. The are independent Bible Baptists so the
King James is IT!! (I always brought in my NASB anyway).

I believe rather than looking at this as Church shopping, we should all
pose this type of question. "Pastor, I am new in the area and am
looking for a bible believing church that preaches the Word. What
opportunities do I have to minister in this church and minister in the
    area?"

    God's Best,

Thanks to everyone who tried to help my nephew find a church (especially
Jim Henderson).

He went one time to the Tyngsboro Baptist Church, which he liked fine.

Then he tried Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Ayer, Mass. ("the church by
the side of the road"), which he also liked.

It looks as if he's going to continue going to Emmanuel (it's only five minutes
or so from home).
