    		Fundamental Beliefs of Seventh-day Adventists
		---------------------------------------------

(Taken from the Seventh-day Adventist Church Manual, revised 1990, Review and
  Herald, Chapter 2, pages 23-31)

Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold
certain fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.
These beliefs, as set forth here, constitute the church's understanding
and expression of the teaching of the Scripture. Revision of these
statements may be expected at a General Conference session when the
church is led by the Holy Spirit to a fuller understanding of Bible
truth or finds better language in which to express the teachings of
    God's Holy Word.

1. The Holy Scriptures
-----------------------
The Holy Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God,
given by divine inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as
they were moved by the Holy Spirit. In this Word, God has committed to man
the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are the infallible
revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the test of
experience, the authoritative revealer of doctrines, and the trustworthy
record of God's acts in history.  (2Peter 1:20,21; 2Tim. 3:16,17; Ps 119:105;
Prov. 30:5,6; Isa. 8:20; John 17:17; 1Thess. 2:13; Heb. 4:12)

2. The Trinity
---------------
There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three
co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all,
and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known
through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration,
and service by the whole creation.  (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; 2Cor. 13:14;
Eph. 4:4-6; 1Peter 1:2; 1Tim. 1:17; Rev. 14:7)

3. The Father
--------------
God the Eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of
all creation. He is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and
abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. The qualities and powers
exhibited in the Son and the Holy Spirit are also revelations of the Father.
(Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; 1Cor 15:28; John 3:16; 1John 4:8; 1Tim. 1:17; Ex. 34:6,7;
John 14:9)

4. The Son
-----------
God the eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ. Through Him all
things were created, the character of God is revealed, the salvation of
humanity is accomplished, and the world is judged. Forever truly God, He
became also truly man, Jesus the Christ. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary. He lived and experienced temptation as a human
being, but perfectly exemplified the righteousness and love of God. By His
miracles He manifested God's power and was attested as God's promised Messiah.
He suffered and died voluntarily on the cross for our sins and in our place,
was raised from the dead, and ascended to minister in the heavenly sanctuary
in our behalf. He will come again in glory for the final deliverance of His
people and the restoration of all things.  (John 1:1-3,14; Col. 1:15-19;
John 10:30; 14:9; Rom. 6:23; 2Cor. 5:17-19; John 5:22; Luke 1:35; Phil. 2:5-11;
Heb. 2:9-18; 1Cor. 15:3,4; Heb. 8:1,2; John 14:1-3)

5. The Holy Spirit
-------------------
God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation,
incarnation, and redemption. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled
Christ's life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who
respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father
and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the
church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the
Scriptures leads it into all truth.  (Gen. 1:1,2; Luke 1:35; 4:18; Acts 10:38;
2Peter 1:21; 2Cor. 3:18; Eph. 4:11,12; Acts 1:8; John 14:16-18,26; 15:26,27;
16:7-13)

6. Creation
------------
God is Creator of all things, and has revealed in Scripture the authentic
account of His creative activity. In six days the Lord made "the heaven and
the earth" and all living things upon the earth, and rested on the seventh day
of that first week. Thus He established the Sabbath as a perpetual memorial
of His completed creative work. The first man and woman were made in the
image of God as the crowning work of Creation, given dominion over the world,
and charged with responsibility to care for it. When the world was finished
it was "very good," declaring the glory of God.  (Gen. 1; 2; Ex. 20:8-11;
Ps. 19:1-6, 33:6-9; 104; Heb. 11:3)

7. The Nature of Man
---------------------
Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power
and freedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an
indivisible unity of body, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life
and breath and all else. When our first parents disobeyed God, they denied
their dependence upon Him and fell from their high position under God. The
image of God in them was marred and they became subject to death. Their
descendants share this fallen nature and its consequences. They are born
with weaknesses and tendencies to evil. But God in Christ reconciled the
world to Himself and by His Spirit restores in penitent mortals the image
of their Maker. Created for the glory of God, they are called to love Him
and one another, and to care for their environment.  (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:7;
Ps. 8:4-8; Acts 17:24-28; Gen. 3; Ps. 51:5; Rom. 5:12-17; 2Cor. 5:19,20;
Ps. 51:10; 1John 4:7,8,11,20; Gen. 2:15)

8. The Great Controversy
-------------------------
All humanity is now involved in a great controversy between Christ and
Satan regarding the character of God, His law, and His sovereignty over the
universe. This conflict originated in heaven when a created being, endowed
with the freedom of choice, in self-exaltation became Satan, God's adversary,
and led into rebellion a portion of the angels. He introduced the spirit of
rebellion into this world when he led Adam and Eve into sin. This human sin
resulted in the distortion of the image of God in humanity, the disordering of
the created world, and its eventual devastation at the time of the worldwide
flood. Observed by the whole creation, this world became the arena of the
universal conflict, out of which the God of love will ultimately be vindicated.
To assist His people in this controversy, Christ sends the Holy Spirit and the
loyal angels to guide, protect, and sustain them in the way of salvation.
(Rev. 12:4-9; Isa. 14:12-14; Eze. 28:12-18; Gen. 3; Rom. 1:19-32; 5:12-21;
8:19-22; Gen. 6-8; 2Peter 3:6; 1Cor. 4:9; Heb. 1:14)

9. The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Christ
-----------------------------------------------
In Christ's life of perfect obedience to God's will, His suffering, death,
and resurrection, God provided the only means of atonement for human sin, so
that those who by faith accept this atonement may have eternal life, and the
whole creation may better understand the infinite and holy love of the Creator.
This perfect atonement vindicates the righteousness of God's law and the
graciousness of His character; for it both condemns our sin and provides
for our forgiveness. The death of Christ is substitutionary and expiatory,
reconciling and transforming. The resurrection of Christ proclaims God's
triumph over the forces of evil, and for those who accept the atonement
assures their final victory over sin and death. It declares the Lordship
of Jesus Christ, before whom every knee in heaven and on earth will bow.
(John 3:16; Isa. 53:1; 1Peter 2:21,22; 1Cor. 15:3,4,20-22; 2Cor. 5:14,15,19-21;
Rom. 1:4; 3:25; 4:25; 8:3,4; 1John 2:2; 4:10; Col. 2:15; Phil. 2:6-11)

10. The Experience of Salvation
--------------------------------
In infinite love and mercy God made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin
for us, so that in Him we might be made the righteousness of God. Led by the
Holy Spirit we sense our need, acknowledge our sinfulness, repent of our
transgressions, and exercise faith in Jesus as Lord and Christ, as Substitute
and Example. This faith which receives salvation comes through the divine
power of the Word and is the gift of God's grace. Through Christ we are
justified, adopted as God's sons and daughters, and delivered from the
lordship of sin. Through the Spirit we are born again and sanctified; the
Spirit renews our minds, writes God's law of love in our hearts, and we
are given the power to live a holy life. Abiding in Him we become partakers
of the divine nature and have the assurance of salvation now and in the
judgment.  (2Cor. 5:17-21; John 3:16; Gal. 1:4; 4:4-7; Titus 3:3-7; John 16:8;
Gal. 3:13,14; 1Peter 2:21,22; Rom. 10:17; Luke 17:5; Mark 9:23,24; Eph. 2:5-10;
Rom. 3:21-26; Col. 1:13,14; Rom. 8:14-17; Gal. 3:26; John 3:3-8; 1Peter 1:23;
Rom. 12:2; Heb. 8:7-12; Eze. 36:25-27; 2Peter 1:3,4; Rom. 8:1-4; 5:6-10)

11. The Church
---------------
The church is the community of believers who confess Jesus Christ as
Lord and Saviour. In continuity with the people of God in Old Testament
times, we are called out from the world; and we join together for worship,
for fellowship, for instruction in the Word, for the celebration of the
Lord's Supper, for service to all mankind, and for the worldwide proclamation
of the gospel. The church derives its authority from Christ, who is the
incarnate Word, and from the Scriptures which are the written Word. The
church is God's family; adopted by Him as children, its members live on the
basis of the new covenant. The church is the body of Christ, a community
of faith of which Christ Himself is the Head. The church is the bride for
whom Christ died that He might sanctify and cleanse her. At His return in
triumph, He will present her to Himself a glorious church, the faithful of
all ages, the purchase of His blood, not having spot or wrinkle, but holy
and without blemish. (Gen. 12:3; Acts 7:38; Eph. 4:11-15; 3:8-11; Matt 28:19,
20; 16:13-20; 18:18; Eph. 2:19-22; 1:22,23; 5:23-27; Col. 1:17,18)

12. The Remnant and Its Mission
--------------------------------
The universal church is composed of all who truly believe in Christ, but
in the last days, a time of widespread apostasy, a remnant has been called out
to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. This remnant announces
the arrival of the judgment hour, proclaim salvation through Christ, and
heralds the approach of His second advent. This proclamation is symbolized by
the three angels of Revelation 14; it coincides with the work of judgment in
heaven and results in a work of repentance and reform on earth. Every believer
is called to have a personal part in this worldwide witness.  (Rev. 12:17;
14:6-12; 18:1-4; 2Cor. 5:10; Jude 3,14; 1Peter 1:16-19; 2Peter 3:10-14; Rev.
21:1-14)

13. Unity in the Body of Christ
--------------------------------
The church is one body with many members, called from every nation,
kindred, tongue, and people. In Christ we are a new creation; distinctions
of race, culture, learning, and nationality, and differences between high
and low, rich and poor, male and female, must not be divisive among us. We
are all equal in Christ, who by one Spirit has bonded us into one fellowship
with Him and with one another; we are to serve and be served without
partiality or reservation. Through the revelation of Jesus Christ in the
Scriptures we share the same faith and hope, and reach out in one witness to
all. This unity has its source in the oneness of the triune God, who has
adopted us as His children.  (Rom. 12:4,5; 1Cor. 12:12-14; Matt. 28:19,20;
Ps. 133:1; 2Cor. 5:16,17; Acts 17:26,27; Gal. 3:27,29; Col. 3:10-15; Eph.
4:14-16; 4:1-6; John 17:20-23)

14. Baptism
------------
By baptism we confess our faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ, and testify of our death to sin and of our purpose to walk in newness
of life. Thus we acknowledge Christ as Lord and Saviour, become His people,
and are received as members of His church. Baptism is a symbol of our union
with Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, and our reception of the Holy Spirit.
It is by immersion in water and is contingent on an affirmation of faith in
Jesus and evidence of repentance of sin. It follows instruction in the Holy
Scriptures and acceptance of their teachings.  (Rom. 6:1-6; Col. 2:12,13;
Acts 16:30-33; 22:16; 2:38; Matt. 28:19,20)

15. The Lord's Supper
----------------------
The Lord's Supper is a participation in the emblems of the body and
blood of Jesus as an expression of faith in Him, our Lord and Saviour. In
this experience of Communion Christ is present to meet and strengthen His
people. As we partake, we joyfully proclaim the Lord's death until He comes
again. Preparation for the Supper includes self-examination, repentance, and
confession. The Master ordained the service of foot washing to signify
renewed cleansing, to express a willingness to serve one another in Christlike
humility, and to unite our hearts in love. The Communion service is open to
all believing Christians. (1Cor. 10:16,17; 11:23-30; Matt. 26:17-30; Rev.
3:20; John 6:48-63; 13:1-17)

16. Spiritual Gifts and Ministries
-----------------------------------
God Bestows upon all members of His church in every age spiritual gifts
which each member is to employ in loving ministry for the common good of the
church and of humanity. Given by the agency of the Holy Spirit, who apportions
to each member as He wills, the gifts provide all abilities and ministries
needed by the church to fulfill its divinely ordained functions. According
to the Scriptures, these gifts include such ministries as faith, healing,
prophecy, proclamation, teaching, administration, reconciliation, compassion,
and self-sacrificing service and charity for the help and encouragement of
people. Some members are called of God and endowed by the Spirit for functions
recognized by the church in pastoral, evangelistic, apostolic, and teaching
ministries particularly needed to equip the members for service, to build up
the church to spiritual maturity, and to foster unity of the faith and
knowledge of God. When members employ these spiritual gifts as faithful
stewards of God's varied grace, the church us protected from the destructive
influence of false doctrine, grows with a growth that is from God, and is
built up in faith and love.  (Rom. 12:4-8; 1Cor. 12:9-11,27,28; Eph. 4:8,11-16;
Acts 6:1-7; 1Tim. 2:1-3; 1Peter 4:10,11)

17. The Gift of Prophecy
-------------------------
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gifts is an
identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry
of Ellen G. White. As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing
and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort,
guidance, instruction, and correction. They also make clear that the Bible
is the standard by which all teachings and experience must be tested.
(Joel 2:28,29; Acts 2:14-21; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 12:17; 19:10)

18. The Law of God
-------------------
The great principles of God's law are embodied in the Ten Commandments
and exemplified in the life of Christ. They express God's love, will, and
purposes concerning human conduct and relationships and are binding upon
all people in every age. These precepts are the basis of God's covenant
with His people and the standard in God's judgment. Through the agency of
the Holy Spirit they point out sin and awaken a sense of need for a Saviour.
Salvation is all of grace and not works, but its fruitage is obedience to
the Commandments. This obedience develops Christian character and results
in a sense of well-being. It is an evidence of our love for the Lord and
our concern for our fellow men. The obedience of faith demonstrates the
power of Christ to transform lives, and therefore strengthens Christian
witness. (Ex. 20:1-17; Ps. 40:7,8; Matt. 22:36-40; Deut. 28:1-14; Matt.
5:17-20; Heb. 8:8-10; John 16:7-10; Eph. 2:8-10; 1John 5:3; Rom, 8:3,4;
Ps. 19:7-14)

19. The Sabbath
----------------
The beneficent Creator, after the six days of Creation, rested on the
seventh day and instituted the Sabbath for all people as a memorial of
Creation. The fourth commandment of God's unchangeable law requires the
observance of this seventh-day Sabbath as the day of rest, worship, and
ministry in harmony with the teaching and practice of Jesus, the Lord of
the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day of delightful communion with God and
one another. it is a symbol of our redemption in Christ, a sign of our
sanctification, a token of our allegiance, and a foretaste of our eternal
future in God's kingdom. The Sabbath is God's perpetual sign of His
eternal covenant between Him and His people. Joyful observance of this
holy time from evening to evening, sunset to sunset, is a celebration of
God's creative and redemptive acts.  (Gen. 2:1-3; Ex. 20:8-11; Luke 4:16;
Is. 56:5,6; 58:13,14; Matt. 12:1-12; Ex. 31:13-17; Eze. 20:12,20; Deut.
5:12-15; Heb. 4:1-11; Lev. 23:32; Mark 1:32)

20. Stewardship
----------------
We are God's stewards, entrusted by Him with time and opportunities,
abilities and possessions, and the blessings of the earth and its resources.
We are responsible to Him for their proper use. We acknowledge God's
ownership by faithful service to Him and our fellow men, and by returning
tithes and giving offerings for the proclamation of His gospel and the
support and growth of His church. Stewardship is a privilege given to us
by God for nurture in love and the victory over selfishness and covetousness.
The steward rejoices in the blessings that come to others as a result of his
faithfulness.  (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:15; 1Chron. 29:14; Haggai 1:3-11; Mal. 3:8-12;
1Cor. 9:9-14; Matt. 23:23; Rom. 15:26,27)

21. Christian Behavior
-----------------------
We are called to be a godly people who think, feel, and act in harmony
with the principles of heaven. For the Spirit to recreate in us the
character of our Lord we involve ourselves only in those things which will
produce Christlike purity, health, and joy in our lives. This means that our
amusement and entertainment should meet the highest standards of Christian
taste and beauty. While recognizing cultural differences, our dress is to be
simple, modest, and neat, befitting those whose true beauty does not consist
of outward adornment but in the imperishable ornament of a gentle and quiet
spirit. It also means that because our bodies are the temples of the Holy
Spirit, we are to care for them intelligently. Along with adequate exercise
and rest, we are to adopt the most healthful diet possible and abstain from
the unclean foods identified in the Scriptures. Since alcoholic beverages,
tobacco, and the irresponsible use of drugs and narcotics are harmful to our
bodies, we are to abstain from them as well. Instead, we are to engage in
whatever brings our thoughts and bodies into the discipline of Christ, who
desires our wholesomeness, joy, and goodness.  (Rom. 12:1,2; 1John 2:6;
Eph. 5:1-21; Phil. 4:8; 2Cor. 10:5; 6:14-7:1; 1Peter 3:1-4; 1Cor. 6:19,20;
10:31; Lev. 11:1-47; 3John 2)

22. Marriage and the Family
----------------------------
Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a
lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the
Christian a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and
should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith.
Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this
relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and
permanence of the relationship between Christ and His church. Regarding
divorce, Jesus taught that the person who divorces a spouse, except for
fornication, and marries another, commits adultery. Although some family
relationships may fall short of ideal, marriage partners who fully commit
themselves to each other in Christ may achieve loving unity through the
guidance of the Spirit and the nurture of the church. God blesses the family
and intends that its members shall assist each other toward complete maturity.
Parents are to bring up their children to love and obey the Lord. By their
example and their words they are to teach them that Christ is a loving
disciplinarian, ever tender and caring, who wants them to become members of
His body, the family of God. Increasing family closeness is one of the
earmarks of the final gospel message. (Gen. 2:18-25; Matt. 19:3-9; John
2:1-11; 2Cor. 6:14; Eph. 5:21-33; Matt. 5:31,32; Mark 10:11,12; Luke 16:18;
1Cor. 7:10,11; Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:1-4; Deut. 6:5-9; Prov. 22:6; Mal. 4:5-6)

23. Christ's Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary
------------------------------------------------
There is a sanctuary in heaven, the true tabernacle which the Lord set
up and not man. In it Christ ministers on our behalf, making available to
believers the benefits of His atoning sacrifice offered once for all on the
cross. He was inaugurated as our great High Priest and began His intercessory
ministry at the time of His ascension. In 1844, at the end of the prophetic
period of 2300 days, He entered the second and last phase of His atoning
ministry. It is a work of investigative judgment which is part of the ultimate
disposition of all sin, typified by the cleansing of the ancient Hebrew
sanctuary on the Day of Atonement. In that typical service the sanctuary was
cleansed with the blood of animal sacrifices, but the heavenly things are
purified with the perfect sacrifice of the blood of Jesus. The investigative
judgment reveals to heavenly intelligences who among the dead are asleep in
Christ and therefore, in Him, are deemed worthy to have part in the first
resurrection. It also makes manifest who among the living are abiding in
Christ, keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and in Him,
therefore, are ready for translation into His everlasting kingdom. This
judgment vindicates the justice of God in saving those who believe in Jesus.
It declares that those who have remained loyal to God shall receive the
kingdom. The completion of this ministry of Christ will mark the close of
human probation before the Second Advent.  (Heb. 8:1-5; 4:14-16; 9:11-28;
10:19-22; 1:3; 2:16,17; Dan. 7:9-27; 8:13,14; 9:24-27; Num. 14:34; Eze. 4:6;
Lev. 16; Rev. 14:6,7; 20:12; 14:12; 22:12)

24. The Second Coming of Christ
--------------------------------
The second coming of Christ is the blessed hope of the church, the grand
climax of the gospel. The Saviour's coming will be literal, personal, visible,
and worldwide. When He returns, the righteous dead will be resurrected, and
together with the righteous living will be glorified and taken to heaven, but
the unrighteous will die. The almost complete fulfillment of most lines of
prophecy, together with the present condition of the world, indicates that
Christ's coming is imminent. The time of that event has not been revealed,
and we are therefore exhorted to be ready at all times.  (Titus 2:13;
Heb. 9:28; John 14:1-3; Acts 1:9-11; Matt. 24:14; Rev. 1:7; Matt. 26:43,44;
1Thess. 4:13-18; 1Cor. 15:51-54; 2Thess. 1:7-10; 2:8; Rev. 14:14-20; 19:11-21;

25. Death and Resurrection
---------------------------
The wages of sin is death. But God, who alone is immortal, will grant
eternal life to His redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state
for all people. When Christ, who is our life, appears, the resurrected
righteous and the living righteous will be glorified and caught up to meet
their Lord. The second resurrection, the resurrection of the unrighteous,
will take place a thousand years later. (Rom. 6:23; 1Tim. 6:15,16; Eccl.
9:5,6; Ps. 146:3,4; John 11:11-14; Col. 3:4; 1Cor. 15:51-54; 1Thess. 4:13-17;
John 5:28,29; Rev. 20:1-10)

26. The Millennium and the End of Sin
-------------------------------------
The millennium is the thousand-year reign of Christ with His saints in
heaven between the first and second resurrections. During this time the
wicked dead will be judged; the earth will be utterly desolate, without living
human inhabitants, but occupied by Satan and his angels. At its close Christ
with His saints and the Holy City will descend from heaven to earth. The
unrighteous dead will then be resurrected, and with Satan and his angels will
surround the city; but fire from God will consume them and cleanse the earth.
The universe will thus be freed of sin and sinners forever.  (Rev. 20;
1Cor. 6:2,3; Jer. 4:23-26; Rev. 21:1-5; Mal. 4:1; Eze 28:18,19)

27. The New Earth
------------------
On the new earth, in which righteousness dwells, God will provide an
eternal home for the redeemed and a perfect environment for everlasting life,
love, joy, and learning in His presence. For here God Himself will dwell
with His people, and suffering and death will have passed away. The great
controversy will be ended, and sin will be no more. All things, animate and
inanimate, will declare that God is love; and He shall reign forever. Amen.

 * * Seventh-day Adventist beliefs in relation to other Christian beliefs * *
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Practically all Seventh-day Adventist beliefs are held by one or
more Christian groups. A few are distinctive with us. Our beliefs
could be classified in relation to the beliefs of other Christians
	under the following headings:

SECTION I. In common with conservative Christians and the historic
	    Protestant Creeds:

WE BELIEVE:

	- That God is the Sovereign Creator, upholder, and ruler of the
universe, and that He is eternal, omnipotent, omniscient, and
	   omnipresent.

	- That the Godhead, the Trinity, comprises God the Father, Christ
the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

	-  That the Scriptures are the inspired revelation of God to men;
and that the Bible is the sole rule of faith and practice.

	- That Jesus Christ is very God, and that He has existed with the
	   Father from all eternity.

	- That the Holy Spirit is a personal being, sharing the attributes
of deity with the Father and the Son.

	- The Christ, the Word of God, became incarnate through the
miraculous conception and the virgin birth; and that He lived
an absolutely sinless life here on earth.

	- That the vicarious, atoning death of Jesus Christ, once for all,
is all-sufficient for the redemption of a lost race.

	- That Jesus Christ arose literally and bodily from the grave.

	- That He ascended literally and bodily into heaven.

	- The He now serves as our advocate in priestly ministry and
	   mediation before the Father.

	- That He will return in a premillennial, personal, imminent
	   second advent.

	- That man was created sinless, but by his subsequent fall
entered a state of alienation and depravity.

	- That salvation through Christ is by Grace alone, through
	   faith in His blood.

	- That entrance upon the new life in Christ is by regeneration,
	   or the new birth.

	- That man is justified by faith.

	- That man is sanctified by the indwelling Christ through the
	   Holy Spirit.

	- That man will be glorified at the resurrection or translation
of the saints, when the Lord returns.

	- That there will be a judgment of all men.

	- That the gospel is to be preached as a witness to all the world.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION II. On certain doctrines among conservative Christians where room for
theological debate is assumed, (i.e. not necessary for the
salvation of an individual) we hold one of two or more alternate
	    views:

WE BELIEVE:

	- That man is free to choose or reject the offer of salvation
through Christ; we do not believe that God has predetermined
that some men shall be saved and others lost.

	- That the moral law of ten commandments, or the Decalogue is
the standard of life and conduct for men of all ages; we do not
believe that the Decalogue has been either changed or abolished.

	- That baptism is to be administered by single immersion; we do
not believe that it may be administered by sprinkling, pouring,
	   or trine immersion.

	-  That man was endowed at creation with conditional immortality;
we do not believe that man has innate immortality or an immortal
	   soul.

	- That the wicked will be punished by suffering and complete
destruction in the lake of fire; we do not believe in an
eternally burning hell in which souls are tormented without end.

	- That the seventh day of the week is the Sabbath; we do not
believe that the Sabbath has been abolished, changed to the
first day, or is merely a seventh part of time.

	- That the principle of tithing is God's plan for the support
of His church; we do not believe that tithing was only for
	   the Jews.

	- That God created the world in six literal days; we do not
believe that creation was accomplished by long eons of
	   evolutionary processes.

	- That the correct view of prophetic interpretation is best set
forth by what is known as the historical school; we do not
accept the systems followed by either the preterists or the
	   futurists.

	- That church and state should operate in entirely separate
spheres; we do not believe that in an attempt to control
men's religion or religious activities the church should
dominate the state, or that the state should govern the
	   church.

	- That the ordinance instituted by Christ - that of washing
one another's feet at the time of the Lord's Supper - is to
be practiced; we do not believe that this was merely an
accommodation to the customs and necessities of those times.

	- That we should abstain from such practices as the use of
alcohol and tobacco; we do not believe that indulgence in
these things is fully representative of the character of
	   our Lord.

(My own personal feelings about SECTION II: These should cause no serious
division among Christians since they do not affect the foundational doctrines
of the Christian faith or the salvation of the soul. These are merely areas of
theological debate and have no direct bearing upon any of the great doctrines
of the Bible.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION III. In a few areas of Christian thought, our doctrines are
	      distinctive with us:

WE BELIEVE:

*- That there is a sanctuary in heaven where Christ, our High
Priest, ministers in two distinct phases of His mediatorial
	   work.

*- That there is to be an investigative judgment in which the
destinies of all men are decided before Christ comes in the
	   clouds of glory.

**- That the Spirit of prophecy, or the prophetic gift, is one
of the gifts of the Spirit promised to the church in the last
days, and that that gift was manifested to the Seventh-day
Adventist Church in the work and writings of Ellen G. White.

	- That the seal of God and the mark of the beast, mentioned in
Revelation, are symbols of the opposing forces of good and evil
in the last great conflict before Christ comes the second time.

	- That the three angels of Revelation 14 represent the proclamation
of God's last message to the world in preparation for the
	   coming of our Lord.

These were taken from the book "Questions on Doctrine", 1957(?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ATTENTION: The following is my own personal opinion about these beliefs and
has nothing whatsoever to do with the Seventh-day Adventist church
itself or any of it's members except me:

* Personally, I do not believe in the idea of the 'investigative judgment'
simply because I can find no basis in Scripture for it. I believe that there
is a sanctuary in heaven and I believe that there will be a judgment, and
Daniel 8:14 does say "And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred
days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed". But I don't see that these are
all necessarily connected. My meager research shows me that theory of the
'investigative judgment' came about from the shambles of the Millerite movement
and the faulty prediction that Christ's Second Coming would be on Oct 22, 1844.
The 'investigative judgment' makes no sense biblically and yet Ellen G. White
is often quoted as saying "The correct understanding of the ministration in the
heavenly sanctuary is the foundation of our faith." (EV 221:2)

It is MY firm belief that Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, is now and has
always been, the foundation of our faith! Anything else is not Christian.

I believe that this is one of those areas of endless debate that I refuse to
enter into with other SDA's. According to our Church Manual I can be censured
or even disfellowshipped for writing these opinions here and explaining them
to others, and yet I know there are loads of SDA's who don't believe this
doctrine either and are just being a bit more quiet about it than I am. In
fact, I believe this feeling is more prevalent than the church is willing to
admit. One popular SDA theologian even included a chapter about it in his
book "More Adventist Hot Potatoes". (The author is Martin Weber and he holds a
different view of this than I do, but the chapter is enlightening nonetheless.)

I have no wish to insult the intelligence or sincerity of my brothers and
sisters in the Seventh-day Adventist church who hold this doctrine very dear.
This argument is pretty simple for me: there is no basis in Scripture for this
idea/belief and I do not hold it to be true. This is how we are supposed to
judge all of our beliefs. On the other hand, I freely admit that I don't know
everything and I may be mistaken here. With that in mind, I am willing to
listen if anyone feels the need to explain their point of view to me on this
doctrine.

** In an effort to bolster the opinion that Ellen G. White was a prophet of
God, many Seventh-day Adventists tend to focus on the gift of prophecy only,
forgetting all of the other gifts of the Holy Spirit. This, to me, is not
a balanced view.

Ellen G. White never claimed to be a prophet and refused to take the title. It
is my belief, based on my meager research, that she was certainly a Christian,
and I don't believe she knowingly tried to deceive anyone. It is my belief
that, if she were alive today, she would have had this belief removed from the
list immediately, although, for the sake of harmony, I am willing to admit that
I may be wrong about that. Only God knows.

I believe she was inspired by the Holy Spirit, but I do not believe that EVERY
word that she said or EVERY word that she wrote was inspired. She was, after
all a human being, and it would be inconsistent with what the Bible teaches us
about prophets.

I believe that she has been MISQUOTED and taken OUT OF CONTEXT more times than
I care to think of, and a great deal of this has been done by people in our own
denomination. I have also come across the charge that certain of her writings
may have been 'edited' or 'slightly changed' or 'updated' or even 'suppressed'.
These may or may not be true, but it doesn't really matter. What matters is
that Ellen G. White ALWAYS pointed people back to the Bible, and not to any
of her writings. And that is where I believe we should be spending most of our
time, in the Holy Bible. We (the SDA church) are supposed to believe that the
Bible is God's inspired word, and is the full, sufficient, and the only basic
rule of faith and practice. We do not consider the writings of Ellen G. White
as either a substitute for or an addition to the Holy Bible. For Adventists,
the Bible stands unique and supreme as the test of Christian faith and practice,
while the writings of Ellen G. White serve, in her own words, as "a lesser
light to lead men and woman to the greater light". Her writings do not
present a new way of salvation, but are designed to lead men to understand
and appreciate the Bible, and to avail themselves of the fount of salvation
therein revealed. We must always remember this.

I do not believe that my disagreement with any of these beliefs as stated above
makes me any less a Seventh-day Adventist, although some may disagree:

-"Adventist" means we believe in the Advent (or Second Coming) of our Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ. If you believe Jesus is coming again as stated in
the Bible, then technically, you are an "Adventist".

-"Seventh-day" means that, unlike most of the Christian world today, we
observe the seventh day of the week (commonly known as Saturday) in
accordance with the 10 Commandments, as God's Sabbath.

I think I've made my feelings known as EGW in the role of a prophet.
According to the Biblical tests of a prophet, she fails (Deuteronomy
    13:1-5, Deuteronomy 18:20-22, Isaiah 8:20, Isaiah 9:15).

Hi Mike,

I don't know how I can honestly and accurately estimate that percentage.
I am basing my statements on many things I have read and heard and seen
over a period of time. And of course, I am basing my conclusions on my
own Bible study. Any ideas?

Hi Tony,

Perhaps you would like to represent the true believer of this doctrine
here? Tony, I really think you would be the perfect person to do this
since you have made your position very clear, and I think it would bring
a balance to this note.

>Janet, whats up??!!!

I'm sure you would like an explanation. Fair enough. Here it is:

Since May of this year I have been gently pulling apart all of my beliefs
and seeing if anything needs to be repaired or restored or dusted or
polished, checking the foundation, etc. What I had in mind was to be
able to know and understand every aspect of my beliefs in the Lord Jesus
Christ. I wanted to know them so well that I would be able to answer anyone
who asked about it and I might be able to share the good news of the gospel
with them. This was also a time to settle any questions I had, one way or
the other. This was also a time to check my growth rate, so to speak. I
think that as Christians we all need to take a look back and see if we have
grown and matured at all in our walk with the Lord. We all need to take a
careful look at what we have accumulated along the way and see if it stands
the test of time or not, is it built on rock or not. As we mature in Christ
we will probably have occasion to look back and see that what we once believed
might have had no real basis in Scripture, even though we thought it did at the
time. We then need to rearrange our thinking.

Let me give you an example: When I was a child I used to believe that Santa
Claus brought gifts to our house every Christmas. As I grew I began to learn
more about Christmas. My research showed me that my parents had supplied
these gifts, not Santa. In fact, Santa didn't even exist although there is
still plenty of 'evidence' to the contrary. I then had to rearrange my
thinking in this area. I could have chosen to go in either direction here:
I could have insisted that Santa was indeed real and I could have pointed to
all of the 'evidence' of books, movies, songs, people dressed up as Santa, etc.
He must exist! Or I could have chosen the more mature route, based on the new
information that I could only understand as an adult, and move on from there.

I never knew about the Sanctuary and the Investigative Judgment until I was
at a Revelation Seminar. I had been a Christian for years but I was willing
to admit that I didn't know everything. (If you know everything, there is
nothing left to learn.) And I was learning lots of wonderful things about
the Lord at this seminar, so I just began to juggle this info with all of the
other new things I was learning. I accepted it as a fact and concluded that
when I understood more, this would fall into place with all of the other
pieces. This piece never quite landed anywhere, not for me anyway, not even
after all these years. Acts 17:11 says, talking about the Bereans: "These were
more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all
readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things
were so." I can only assume that if the Bereans found something that they
didn't believe was correct after searching the Scriptures, they dropped it.

Until such time as more evidence comes to light for me I have no other choice
than to drop this doctrine. As I stated previously, I freely admit that I
don't know everything yet. With that in mind, I am willing to listen if
anyone feels the need to explain their point of view to me on this doctrine.

God Bless,
Janet
606.8Investigative JudgmentYIELD::BARBIERITue Oct 11 1994 16:0388
      Hi Janet,

Just a quick note cause I only have a few minutes before lunch
is over and also because I would like to support with scripture,
but I need a Concordance as I don't know well enough where some
        of the scriptures are.

The investigative judgment becomes easy to see when it is
realized that light makes manifest (as Ephesians 5:13,14 says).

I think a neat illustration I heard also really helps here.
I have heard it said that a perfectly white piece of paper,
when hit by a laser does not burn rather it fully reflects the
laser. Should a piece of paper have even a smidgeon of dirt
in it, a laser directed at it would destroy that paper.

The flavor of Hebrews 12 is judgment. Several illusions in that
text are consistent with Daniel 7's judgment texts. In Hebrews 12,
a people are pictured who are able to stand before God - who is
        a consuming fire (Heb. 12:29).

There is something that God did in these people that enabled them
to stand before Him and not be shaken. They could behold that
        consuming fire and live.

In short, the paper had been made white. Should there be a trace
of impurity in that paper, it could not behold the consuming fire.
        It must be made clean.

SEVERAL texts refer to judgment as DELIVERANCE. By this, I am not
implying that there are not other aspects of judgment, but I have
come to believe that judgment refers to God facilitating things
by removing the veil. Instead of a couple nuggets of light, He
        is the consuming fire.

God cannot remove the veil until He has a group that is made white,
a group that can survive seeing God as He is. A group that can
survive all that is manifested in them by LIGHT.

So, again, regarding the saved, judgment is deliverance. And
it is a deliverance that includes cleansing from sin.

Here is where the investigative part comes in. The work of
judgment is a work of God revealing His character to us. As He
reveals His character, He reveals to us our sin. He then offers
us a deepening repentance. The investigative aspect of judgment
is God's investigating our hearts so that He can reveal to us that
which would destroy us should we see Him as He is - our sin.

Several texts come to mind. Paraphrase: "SEARCH [investigate]
me O God and see if there is any evil thing in me!" Actually, I
am not even sure if this is a scripture or an expression I've
heard! A favorite scripture of mine is the mirror text in James
1:23-25. The mirror is a revelation of God's goodness. That
mirror shows us who we are. This is the investigative work. He
doesn't show us all of us at once for we couldn't handle it. He
does so gradually. That mirror INVESTIGATES our hearts by revealing
our sin so that we can repent of it.

Notice in the James verse that the unsaved man beholds the mirror,
but he turns away from it.

The day is coming when the mirror is fully revealed and in that
day the unsaved man will not be able to turn away from it and
bury any revelation of who he is in his subconscious. The veil
is rent and he sees God as he is. And in that seeing of God as
he is, he sees himself as he is. Light makes manifest.

In the last days, there will be two types of paper; black and
white. The time will come when all stand in Mount Zion and see
God fully unveiled. The white paper will survive the experience
and indeed will fully reflect His character. The unsaved will
        be destroyed.

To summarize, character perfection is required before one can
survive the Mount Zion experience. In order to deliver us from
who we are, God gradually shows us the mirror so that He can
investigate our hearts so that He can reveal to us our sin so
that we can let it go by receiving in greater measure the gift
        of repentence.

        This is the investigative judgment.

                                                    God Bless,

                                                    Tony

        Re: Investigative Judgment

I think the following, cross posted from 578.0, would be my comment
        on the Investigative Judgment:

"Again the method by which God accepts us is never performance
based, but Jesus based, and He grades pass-fail. But He will also
grade us pass-fail at the judgment seat of Christ. You must understand
that it's your WORKS which will be judged, not you who will be judged.
Many feel like God is going to subject them to public humiliation for
certain sins they've not overcome. Come on. Has God removed your sins
as far as east from west through Christ or not (Psalm 103:12)? God
only honors His own work. 1 Corinthians 3:6-17 reveals that only a
work of the Spirit can pass His judgment and that His grading system is
gold, silver, and precious stones versus wood, hay, and stubble; that's
pass-fail. It's whether you lived totally dependent or independent that
        will be judged."

I liked much of what you cited with one very fundamental

That being that what the person wrote suggests that no
        part of judgment is deliverance.

Scripture several times refers to a work of judgment as
being a work of deliverance. I have no problem with God
        judging (delivering) me.

I suggest an Isaiah 28 type study. Just pick up a concordance
and look up judge/judgment and see how it often means deliverance.

It truly is some kind of veil over the eyes that the scriptural
references to judgment = deliverance (sometimes) has not been
seen. I don't believe the person you quoted sees this.

    My Dear Tony,

It has ALREADY been accomplished! Romans 7:24 - 8:1 says:

"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself
serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,
who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

I would say that its a difference in interpretation, rather than a
    veil. From .8:

    >God cannot remove the veil until He has a group that is made white,
    >a group that can survive seeing God as He is.

I interpret scripture as saying that we've already been made white, by
Jesus' atoning work on the cross (some of the verses in the two lists
in 605 show what has already been done for us). Obviously we have a
difference of opinion here, in that you have stated in the past that
you don't believe the atonement was completed at the cross. Today's
scripture verse tells us that all of us who are His children SHALL
become like Him when He appears or RETURNS again:

See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be
called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world
does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are
children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We
know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see
Him just as He is. And every one who has this hope fixed on Him
purifies himself, just as He is pure.

                                    1 John 3:1-3

Jesus already dealt with our sin. We have been made righteous. We shall
be like Him in that we will no longer war against the flesh (we will leave
our earth suits behind). We will see Him just as He is--we won't have any
or our pre-existing filters to view Him through.

What you are all saying is perfectly in accordance with
        present-day evangelical thought.

It is NOT in accordance with the Adventism I believe in
and which I recognize is in stark contrast to what Janet
        believes.

Adventism has retreated toward Egypt (at least thats what
Ellen White said). And if it hadn't, Christ could've been
here over a hundred years ago (again, what Ellen White
said). I interject this for Janet and appreciate no one
else here giving Ellen White the same kind of significance.

Christ's faith pierced the veil and ours isn't yet ready to.
Give Hebrews a good read. We are NOT prepared to inhabit

      Hi,

The entire book of hebrews Mike.

Going on from milk to solid food. Resting perfectly in
Christ. Having our consciences purged from dead works to
serve the living God. Being made ready to inhabit Mount
Zion. The finishing of the covenant to write the law in
the heart...all future events not perfectly fulfilled.

I know that I am perhaps alone in this, but I think it is
a horrible perversion to speak of nothing more for Christ
to do should any of His followers sin by even a single thought.

The greatest work Christ can do is to perfectly convert someone
from being a 100% sinner to being 100% righteouss; serving God
perfectly in thought, word, and deed.

I have no use for a Christianity that waters down and makes
unimportant that work which Christ (I believe) longs to do.

All that I refer to has relevence only in the realm of Christ
molding my heart after His image. I am not talking about whether
or not any of us will get a piece of the heavenly real estate

I would not negate the possibility that what He preached was

It's not a question of watering anything down. I see scripture
teaching over and over and over again that we alread HAVE BEEN made
righteous. It teaches that we are dead to the old self, that our life
is hidden is Christ, that Christ is our life, that we are new creatures
in Christ. What determines who we are? Am I a sinner saved by grace,
or am I a saint who sometimes sins. Does my behavior determine who I
am, or does who I am drive my behavior? We have been given the power
to live godly lives-- RIGHT NOW! That's not watering down-- it's
seeing things from God's perspective, rather than with our human eyes.
Since we have been made righteous by our heavenly Father, we produce
righteousness by acting like who we are.

The doctrine/beliefs that my dear brother Tony B. is presenting here

606.28Very General Perspective on Creeds]YIELD::BARBIERIWed Oct 12 1994 16:0873
  Hi,

I really appreciate the spirit of the replies especially
evident with Janet and Bing, but I'm sure in you others
    as well.

I accidentally digressed from the topic when I discussed
the investigative judgment. I am sorry.

My PERSONAL (read: mine) belief is that the full gospel is
going to be received within SDA, but that SDA presently is
in a confused state. Ellen White did say that had the church
not retreated toward Egypt, Jesus could have come back in
(~1853) as well as in 1893. But, we would not.

Personally, I am not high on having a 'tenets of the faith'
and I believe to have any such thing is not of the Lord. I'll
try to dig it up, and I'm pretty sure that Ellen White was
against having any written down 'tenets of the faith' and just
    proclaimed the Bible.

In 1888 in Minneapolis, Jones and Waggoner introduced fresh light
into the church. Had the church had 'tenets', Jones and Waggoner
would have been branded 'non-Adventists' regarding their theology.
They introduced many completely fresh gospel concepts.

The leadership of the church rejected their message. Ellen White
endorsed what they said and even said that they had a clearer
view of justification by faith than she herself had. Referring
back to the rejection in 1888, Ellen White said that the Holy
Spirit was insulted, that the leadership would have treated Christ
as did the Jews, and that the agony in the heart of Christ was
    beyond belief.

If I remember, I'll quote something by A.T. Jones in an 1893 sermon.
He referred to 1888 and said that the Lord will give much more
fresh truth above and beyond 1888 And he pondered the challenge of
    being exposed to fresh light.

I suppose the point I am trying to make is that from an SDA posture
(by SDA, I presume that Ellen White's counsels may be applied), SDA
has been 'in pretty deep' so far as apostasy is concerned. We rejeced
a message in 1888 and for that reason we delayed the coming of the
Lord. We professed to have really accepted the message for many years
    following 1888.

If applying the SDA (i.e. again applying counsel from White) notion
that we can delay the coming by rejecting light and if we observe
that the world basically doesn't even know who SDA is, there are
serious problems in the church. Its a replay of Israel to a 't'.

As far as I am concerned, one of the greatest impediments to receiving
fresh light is to have an 'official' creed. For if one comes to deeper
light, the tendency is there to 'scan the creed' and see if its there.
But, it can't be there! Its fresh light! And yet, the ability for
the light to be received is suppressed because its not in the 'creed.'
    What a catch-22!

But, I do believe that the full gospel will be received from within SDA.
And when that happens, the corresponding revival will be so great that
the world will be lit up with the angel of Revelation 18.

If history has shown us anything and if "all these things happened as
examples and were given to us and for our admonition unto whom the
ends of the earth are come", it would seem apparent that should any
group come to a vast amount of fresh light, the majority will do to
that light and to that group as Israel did to the Jews.

And that's what is going to happen.

                                                     In His Love,

                                                     Tony

    Hi Tony,

It's interesting that you mentioned Egypt twice. God was pretty
straightforward about the situation then, and I believe he feels the
same way now. He called the people out! God doesn't want us in
Egypt. Perhaps it's time we got out of Egypt and started walking
the way the Lord wants us to. The 'map' for our trip is included
in the Bible along with the invitation to leave:

    	Revelation 18:4
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her,
my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye
    	receive not of her plagues.

    	Jeremiah 31:3
The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved
thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have
    	I drawn thee.

    	Psalms 32:8
I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go:
I will guide thee with mine eye.

There are too many more to quote here.

        Yeah, but its a challenge!

When Elijah clarified to Israel where they were and where
God wanted them to be, "they answered him not a word." They
didn't even have a clue. They didn't see any difference in
        the two gospels.

And Elijah is coming in the last days. And his message must
be heeded for the rain to come.

But, most won't even know him when he comes. (By the way, I
believe Elijah is a message and not a real person so far as
        endtime fulfillment is concerned.)

      Hi,

I'm not sure this is appropriate here, but I just want to ask:

Is the change of heart something that takes place as a result
        of a salvation already received?

        Or

Is salvation THE change of heart?

I believe the latter. That the entire realm of salvation is
the conversion of the heart from enmity with God to reconciliation
        to God.

And I have a hard time with a gospel that says salvation is not
        the heart-change.

so, please point me there. If not, could this be discussed here?

IMHO, everyday should be a celebration of life, and worthy of Praising
God. Is God majorly concerned whether He gets worshipped more on
    Saturday, or Sunday?

    Thanks,

    Bob

try a DIR/TITLE=SABBATH and also look at the "New Winds" topic.

    Hello Bob,

Try looking in #574 (New Winds). That seems to be our latest
discussion. I agree, everyday should be a celebration of life. But
is every meal communion? Is every swim a baptism? Some things God
has set aside as holy, and He did give us a few examples.

    In Christ,
    Janet Brown

606.48Bob: Brief ExplanationYIELD::BARBIERIThu Oct 20 1994 16:3122
      Hi Bob,

Just a brief reply only so that you don't have a misconception.

I think all the people that are convicted regarding Sabbath-
keeping all believe in worshipping God every single moment of
our lives. I wouldn't want you to think that we support the
notion of serving God for a single 24 hour time period and living
as godless people the rest of the time.

We just happen to believe that God has asked His people to set
aside a specific one day time period in 7 (His Sabbath) to cease
from secular activity so much as possible so as to enjoy resting
in Him in a different way than one might rest in Him while doing
secular things such as job, housework, lawn, etc.

Anyway, we all have access to all the positions in this notesfile
and I just briefly wanted to explain a position consistent with
setting a day aside in a certain way while advocating resting in
Christ every moment of our lives.

                                                     God Bless,
