1321.0. "winter trout" by KYOA::WOODS () Tue Feb 06 1990 19:19

I've heard that winter trout stream fishing is highly productive
when usin aan artificial lure made to resemble a maggot. What is the
correct name for it and how do you present this lure using a
    spincaster?

Just but real maggots on real hooks. They are also called "meal worms". Fish
like you would a nightcrawler. Let me (us) know how this works out!

Any of you fisherpersons have any luck fishing for trout
in open water on a partially frozen lake? For those of you
famailiar with lake Quinsig. in Worc. the end where most
people fish for trout in the spring is now open water.

I've been thinking of giving it a try. any suggestions?

Stan,

I take a shot... maggots, and meal worms are good bait for trout in streams or
through the ice. Bait stores also have mousies, a maggot with a small white
tail, these work very well. For stream fishing them I would use an ultra light
rod and reel w/ 4 lb line and a 10 hoook and open the gap of the hook slightly
add split shot and drift the bait into the pools. You cam also jig this bait
when ice fishing. As far as artifical, I think you would be reffering to a
weighted nymph. It can be fished with with a fly rod or a ultralight set up.

I have been getting some nice trout thru the ice this winter, all on shiners
and mant of them on large shiners.
