1397.0. "Trolling Motor Shaft Length" by SALEM::JUNG () Tue May 01 1990 14:31

Does anybody out there kmow which shaft size
(length) for a minn-kota electric that I would
need for my 14' deep v grumman. My choices are
    36", 42", or 48". Thanks in advance!

I would go with the 48". Most bow mounted trolling motors can be
adjusted to move the shaft either up or down depending on conditions. I
believe your talking about a v hull style of boat that sits higher in the water
than say a Ranger or Johnboat style. So you'll probably want the longest length
shaft to ensure your prop gets down to the water and stays submerged.

1397.2go with the 42" shaftABACUS::TOMASJoeTue May 01 1990 15:4810
I would recommend the 42". I have a 14' Princecraft with the 42" and
there's at least 4-5" of shaft that I have not put into the water. If you
get the 48", the damn thing will stick way up in the air as you won't need
all that shaft down in the water.

If I run into rough water where the prop is coming out of the water a lot, I
just drop it down the extra 4-5" and it helps a lot. Otherwise, I run with
it shallower so I don't hit a lot of submerged obstacles.

I have to agree with Joe, 42" works great on my 16' alum. I get into
trouble when in 2.5' - 3' waves, but the electric is pretty much useless
in that kind of wind anyway. I don't know what or where the floor in
your boat is, but be sure your control cable is long enough. The
standard is 4' I believe. I needed at least a 6' to reach my floor.
I have a flat floor that is not raised, plus a small storage area
in the front that the cable had to go around.

you could always call a grunman dealer and ask what the actual bow height
is and what size they suggest........

Thanks everybody for the quick replies. .4- The grumman dealer
was "clueless". Taht's Derry Marine for you. I ordered the
Minn Kota 765MX Powerdrive. I was going to buy it at K-Mart,
but the new BPS spring catalog (which I just got yesterday)
has it for the same price plus includes $65 worth of asst.
lures. Sounds good to me. BTW...I went with the 42".
    Thank's again!

    	Gee Ray That's It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All this time Les told me to leave the trolling motor down and run it
at top speed with the main motor, and I get at least another 5 MPH top
end. What would I do without you to show me the error of my ways. It
    wasn't the transducer after all.
Let me see now, if I put a big spoiler on the back of the
boat, streamline my reels for less air resistance, don't buy those
transducers from Sully, hey now we're cooking. This will add at least
another 10 lbs of Bass in the livewell every tourny.
