554.0. "Who's Who II" by COLORS::MACINTYRE (In search of the Largemouth Bass...) Tue Dec 22 1987 21:24

Since it's been close to two years and 500 notes since the

Hi Don, Glad to meet you.

    Joe Amato, Manchester NH
    UEG ZK3, Nashua, NH
    S/W Engineer

Primarily salt water fishing, concentrating on tuna, in the summer
and cod the rest of the year. At ice out I can be found with fly
rod in hand looking for salmon. And after work in the summer, I'll
try and pick up some trout (all catch and release), or surfcast for
blues. Although the surfcasting and flyfishing has taken a back seat
since we got our 24' Grady White.

Best fish to date is a 120lb Yellowfin on 50lb stand up tackle.
Hoping to up this next year, if I can get a slip up in NH.

Best non-fish: 1/2 dozen star fish, or 1 crab (take your pick)

Fish almost exclusively for bass. Have a seasonal cottage on
Quaddik lake in Thompson, Ct. Fish out of a 16' MonArk Fish-n-Ski
fiberglass boat with a 75hp Mariner engine. The only ones I keep
are the ones that aren't going to survive. Love that spinnerbait.
	You can't fish it wrong.

I have 2 main pastimes, hunting and fishing. Now that the hunting
season is winding down it's time to start looking at getting out
for some ice fishing. I go every year for smelt and white perch.
This usually runs between mid Jan. to late Mar. depending on how
the ice holds up. After ice out it's up to Winni for a shot at some
salmon/trout. This usually brings me into smallmouth time which
then carries into largemouth time. I then go from largemouth fishing
to archery season for deer. Next it's duck season, more archery,
then finally rifle/shotgun season for deer. This lasts from Sept. till
now. Oh yea, I do get out on occaision (less than I'd like) for salt
water (jettys and party boats). Last year I went out on an all nighter
and had a good time with a decent catch of cod, cusk, and pollack. I
think my father and I are going to make this a yearly event. Hmmm,
let's see, I think I can squeeze that in for May :-)

Fish mostly salt water in my 21 ft Chris Craft (with paper and loran),
but do have a 4 lb 19" largemouth to my name. I trailer so anywhere
in New England is open for me, but I mostly fish Cod in inshore
off Salem, Marblehead or Isle of Shoals. Offshore spots are Jeffries
and Stellewagen. When the Cod dry up in July and August I do Blues.
Also this August will be devoted to standup fishing for yellow fin
off Block Island. Largest Cod 44lbs, pollock 35lbs, blue 17lbs. Still
    waiting for a Halibut.

Also, I am now wrapping my own rods, have a custom 8 ft jigging
stick underway that is looking great. Anyone interested in having a
custom Cod, Tuna or Spinning stick made for them should drop me
    a line.

BOAT: 14' PrinceCraft (customized) w/25HP Merc & Minn Kota 565 bow-mounted
      electric motor.

Most of my fishing is in pursuit of ole bucketmouth in NH waters. Although
I didn't catch any hawgs this year, I certainly did catch a lot more than in
past years thanks to tips I learned from guys like Rick "R/O" Palmer. Last
year, however, I caught two bass that tipped the scales at 7+ lbs, and
several over 5 lbs.

Earlier this year, I customized my 14' aluminum PrinceCraft by installing
carpeted floorboards, a forward casting deck with swivel seat, and a storage
compartment. I really am proud of the way it turned out and it has
certainly made the boat into much more of a "fishing machine"! Next spring
I'm planning to build-in an aerated live-well.

I've thoroughly enjoyed getting together with a lot of you fellow bassers by
way of the tourneys we've had. I enjoyed coordinating several of them and
although it's a lot of work and I took some abuse, it was worth the effort.
I know a lot of us had fun (even in the rain!).

I look forward to bassin next year, but I think I'll try some salmon fishing
early in the season now that I've got a boat. I also look forward to
meeting more of you...hopefully some of you at DonMac's house in January!

Happy New Year!

New to the notes file but not to fishing. I've been fishing ever
since I could hold a rod. My fishing starts at ice out for trout
until around Memorial weekend or until the water warms up to much
for the trout. After that its bass for the rest of the year. Some
of the spring trout I keep for the frying pan. All the bass I get
are released. I fish out of a canoe with an electric motor. Its
great for hard to get at places. My best bass this year was a 7
lber. 23". It was an exceptional bass year for me with many in
the 3-4 lb range. I'm always looking for someone to go fishing
with as all my neighbors are into hitting alittle white ball around
a golf course all summer and are not into fishing. I'd love to
have someone come along with me and share the enjoyment I get.

My wife gave me a bumper sticker recently that read:
My wife says she'll leave me if I go fishing one more time----
Boy am I going to miss her!

	Greetings:

	Ed Preston
	CHM, Chelmsford MA
	CAS/MRS, Programmer/Analyst

I just re-discovered fishing this year while vacationing
at the in-law's condo on Paugus Bay, Lake Winnepesaukee.
At first I caught perch on nightcrawlers, and wondered why
I didn't get any attention from bass (you can see them right
off the dock). Well, I did get "hooked" enough to keep at it,
and after a little time in this file I began to learn about
all this mysterious stuff like "spinner bait", "hula poppers",
"jitterbugs" and the venerable rubber worm.

I went out and got myself a 5 1/2' South Bend Boron/Graphite rod
and a Johnson Century 225 closed-face reel (okay, I know, not
sexy but it's worked so far), a little tackle box (that's already
too full), and I was ready for action!

	So far I've caught 2 smallmouths, (13" and 18"), a 21" pickrel,
a 12" land-locked salmon, a fair sized catfish, and more than
enough perch. All went back but the smaller bass - I got talked
into cooking that one, and now I'm a confirmed catch/release guy.
I could bring myself to fillet perch, an occasional trout, maybe
a salmon, but for some reason I the bass seem different. Maybe
it's because they fight so well, or because they don't stock them,
or because all the fun seems to be in catching them. I'd rather
let them go to keep the population high, and wait for a lunker
for the wall. Somebody who knows a lot more about fishing than I
do said I should have kept that 18" Smallmouth - trophy size. Oh
	well, he's still out there...

I live right on the Merrimac River in N. Chelmsford, and have
spent several hours fishing it but have so far been skunked,
which is embarrasing, since I can see them jumping out of the
	water sometimes.

In NH I fish off the dock or from a 17' canoe. I'd like to add an
electric motor, and maybe upgrade the reel to a baitcaster. I plan
to try some ice fishing, too.

	Ed

    I fish out of a Lund Tyee 4.9 (4.9 meters = 16'3") with a 70 horse
Evinrude on the back and assorted accesories (aereated livewell,
trolling motor, casting platform w/pedestal seat up front and Eagle
Z6100 courtesy of Bassin' Bob). Bass are tops but I fish to relax
and anything that's stupid enough to swallow a hook is ok by me.
I throw 'em all back anyways (except one shad which was a mistake
    and one trout which wasn't).

I primarily fish Western Mass (the western side of the Connecticut
River and beyond) including Hampton Ponds, the Oxbow, Onota and
Pontoosuc in Pittsfield. When I don't have the time to haul the
tub and launch, I strap on the hipboots and look for bass in the
    rivers (Conn., Westfield and Housatonic).

I salute the ladies and gentlemen of this conference and thank you
for the help you've provided in making my fishing time more productive,
if less relaxing (how do you relax with an 18" smallmouth on the
    other end of the line?)

    	There's only one thing that stops me from fishing;
    			When the ice's too thin.

It's fresh water all the way for me. I live in the heart of
the Berkshire hill towns ... where the Westfield meets the Westfield
by the Westfield ... (The Middle Branch meets the East Branch just
north of my house and the West Branch joins them just south of my
    house).

I fly fish, spin fish, bait fish, troll lead core, and ice fish.
My favorite waters run from the smallest of brooks (in Montgomery)
to 'big' ponds such as Otis.

My favorite pond for any season is Goose Pond (primarily Upper
    Goose) in Lee MA.

My favorite streach of river is the catch and release section
of the Westfield River north of Huntington MA on Rt. 112.

I own a 13' 64# glass canoe and electric motor and spend an
average of 16 hours a week fishing from it durring the season.

I've been fishing since I was a little kid, off piers and docks,
lately its been either in my Boston Whaler, or my fathers' boat.
Salt water fishing has always been my favorite.

I like to cruise up and down the Annisquam River, when I know the
oceans' going to be relatively calm I'll make the run around Cape
Ann. When I fish I don't really have anything in mind, the bigger
the better. I like fishing without bait, seaworms are nasty to put
on the hook. Mostly I fish for cod, mackerel, blues, and of course,
tuna when they are running.

My Dad and I fought a tuna for 18 hours once, thats when I
decided I should have my own boat. I'm not that much of a fanatic
that I need to fish in the winter time, but I will fish when the
opportunity arises, whether its New England or down the Florida
Keys.

Happy Holidays to All!

I think my first love is Steelhead fishing in the Salmon River in
NY. Either early winter or early spring. (Only serious fisherpersons
are there - means no crowds) Two years agao I bought a scanoe. That
really didnt do it. After pouting for 20 years every time I went
by a Marina my wife said to stop it and go buy a boat. I started
out at a 14 ft aluminum. I ended up with a 16 ft glass bass boat,
all the bells. 70 HP trim and tilt, electric. Sold HER car for the
4X4 king cab to pull it.
I get 5 weeks vacation - been with DEC too long. Do you know how
many Bass trips you can get in with 5 weeks vacation? (Wife gets

4 years ago I didnt really fish. Thank you Jack Varley. See what

As of this year, I am at the low end of the learning curve and loving
every minute. I will catch anything that wants to bite (as long
as I have someone who can remove the hooks!!), but I like the bass
most and don't tend to get anything else on the line excepting perch
    and pikerel.

The largest bass I caught was in the 3-4 lb range and I got 3 of
those. I am a 100% catch and release (cause I don't much like eating
fish), but someday I am going to want to learn how to clean a fish
so I can camp and fish without too much supply. I am sure the
fish taste better when you need them for sustenance! I won't mind
    eating perch for that.

I love to camp and have some adequate equipment. I also have a young
family and voluntarilly limit my fishing to late nights and early
mornings. I will be taking an overnight or two (more if I can)
this summer. Lastly, I love to spend money on lures and such and
    trying it all out!

Sure like to fish and sometimes even catch some even though as we all
now that catching them just adds to the fun. I really only work to support
the boating and fishing habits. But since all fisher-persons(don't want
Jeanne D. to feel left out. Maybe she will bring her Whaler to the
Cape this year) spend more money than they have my wife also works.

Normally when the weather is warmer take a run out in one of the boats
after I get home from work. Unfortunately the Alura is on blocks for
the winter but the work skiff is always ready. Had the engine on her
running the day before Christmas but could'nt find anyone that wanted
to go out. This time of year I don't go out alone cause the water temp
is below 50 degrees.

    I re-discovered surf fishing about 6 years after I bought a Dodge
4X4 Ramcharger and went looking for things to do with it.
Since then surf-fishing has become my main diversion from the real
world. I usually "go fishing" rather than "go to catch fish".
My wife sometimes has a difficult time understanding the difference.
I finally caught my first Striper (~18") on Dec 10. Like the Beach
Bagel I'm looking for the 50 pounder.

I usually make 2 or 3 trips a year for tuna or shark, but I usually
would rather be on a beach or jetty.

In the winter I build rods and make wooden lures. The striper I
mentioned above was caught on a lure and rod I made last winter.
    Nice feeling of satisfaction.

I am a member of the New Jersey Beach Buggy Assoc. A great

Just signed on with DEC about a month ago, and it didn't take me
long to find out about this conference. My wife, also a DECCY (sp?),
and I moved up from Raliegh, North Caroplina, and have just settled
into an old victorian up in Leominster.mass. I am a fishing fanatic
(except for ice) and would probably try trolling in a toilet bowl
if there were fish there! I enjoy all types of fishing, but especially
flyfishing for trout, worming for bass, and surfcasting for blues
and strippers. I even have a 761# giant bluefin to my credit (prince
edward island ,1974) Thus far I've found a stream up in pepperal
with some nice brookies in the 12-15 inch range-fly fishing only
i think, and got my truck registered out on plum island in time
to chase some nice blue fish (one was 18#+) and some schoolie stripers
on a fly rod. Don't have a boat right now,as we sold our 20' I/O
in raleigh-great for water skiing and lakes, but wouldn't want to
run out to block in it. Am thinking about a small canoe in the spring
time and would appreciate any leads. Hope to start doing some more
poking around in the spring time and usually carry licences for
Ct,NY,Mass, and sometimes R.I.. Look forward to reading along and

meeting a few of you along the way.

This is the introduction file. So let me enter my fishing
resume'.

Richard Gath Nickname : Bear
Merrimack N.H.

Work: Merrimack N.H.

Boat: 22 ft Angler Walk around with 200 hp Merk.

Fishing experience:

Spent my early years in the pursuit of trout in Pa. When I was
hired at Dec. I worked and lived in Westfield Mass. For about
ten years I spent my time fly fishing the Westfield River, all
branches and some limited access areas.

I also spent about 5 years traveling out to the Salmon River
in New York and "FISHING" for salmon and steelhead. We made
about 5 trips a year. We nearly always caught fish and I remember
one trip in particular where I landed over 30 steelhead in one
day over 5 pds.

Also I was beginning to acquire an interest in salt water. So I
would make a few trips fishing to Block Island, Charestown
Breachway, and the mouth of the Merrimack River. We would fish
for flounder and Cod fish. In the summer we would fish for
Blues and a occasional striper.

Later I really got bit by the striper bug and rented a camp on
Plum Island for two years and started fishing regularly at night
for stripers. As all of you should know these were the lean years
for stripers and catching one cow a season was perhaps the Ave.

Well because of this decline I started fishing Jeffries for Cod
and Haddock. I have made about 50 or so trips. Some good some
lean.

I have fished Cape Cod Bay, Races point, The race, Pleasant Bay
Quincy bay, Salem, Boston Harbor, Halibut Point, Southern
Jeffries, Northern Jeffries, Wells Maine, Mouth of the Conn.
River, Naragansit Bay, Charestown Breachway, Block Island.
But my specialty is Mouth of the Merrimack and all brackish
water in a 7 miles of the Merrimack.

Memorable Fish: 49 pd striper live lining Herring at Pleasant bay
49 pd striper on a sea worm at Merrimack River

		14 pound steelhead

Memorable Trips: Mouth of the Merrimack; 4 fish 128 pds total
		  weight.
About three trips when I went out a alone
and scored big with stripers. One was on the
4th of July and another was at Cranes Beach
They set off the nicest display of fire
works I ever saw. It didn't bother the fishing
                  either.
And of course the two or three really good
                  trips steelhead fishing mentioned earlier.

I do not recommend that any one go out alone . However for
those that do there is a special feeling that you get. It
is why I LOVE fishing the ocean. This feeling is also stronger
when you fish at night alone. The mouth of the Merrimack is
a dangerous place in the daytime so please don't do anything
as foolish as me at least until you are intimately familiar
with every rock, sand bar, jetty, and rip. It takes years of
experiences to develop confidence.

There is one song By the Little River Band that I really like
called "Cool Change".( It talks about being out on the sea alone)

I have also fished for tuna but I must admit that my experience
is real limited. I think I went out on a grand total of three
trips.... I did see a few though.

Last year I retired temporary from fishing and followed other
pursuits. My wife so far has tolerated my absence. I hope to
get back into it soon.

I have also spent long days ice fishing for trout on many
of the large New Hampshire Lakes. Oh yea love them smelt
and white Perch.

I would also like to say that I really enjoy eating fish.
I do not eat fish from Lake Ontario. I do not eat fish
from Salem or Quincy Bay. I detest the waste of fish and this
includes the sole called "BAD" species. I have no qualms
about turning in any law breakers. I am strongly apposed
to destroying suckers,pickerel,bass,dace,or any species
of fish that might be left on the ice or just thrown on
the stream or pond bank. I am also saddened when I see
people over harvesting the blue fish when I know that they
will eventually be thrown out.

It isn't going to last for ever.....

Bear.

P.S. also there is a fine on my boat for anyone who litters.

Well its good to see so many new fishermen coming in on this note.
Along with the "oldies" this is becoming a good source of very
diversified fishing forms. Keep them coming.

Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Bob Beazley. I am a Software
Consultant located in Dallas and have been at DEC for almost eighteen
years now. The "oldies" know me as "COONASS". This is the local
(Louisiana) term for Cajuns. Yes, I was born and raised in Louisiana,
even have the swamp stripes around my legs to prove it!!! I have
been fishing for the better part of my 50+ years. I can't remember
exactly when I started, but it was when I was very young because
it is very important in our culture to start children fishing early.
For many their livelihood depends upon it.

For three years I worked for DEC in Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada. During this time I had a 26' Bayliner and went after the
salmon damn near every weekend!! Beautiful country, beautiful fishing.
Probably the biggest was 25-30 lbs, with MANY 200 lb weekends.

Recently though it has been a return to my roots. Both parents have
passed away leaving me and my sister the family fishing camp. It
is located 25 miles east of Shreveport, Louisiana on Lake Bistineau.
It is a nice place for weekends with a comfortable cabin, a bass
boat, a powerboat, and a piroque(thats a one man boat used in tree
congested, shallow water). Last spring Joe Tomas was in Dallas and
    we spent some time there.
as you "oldies" already know, there is a standing invitation if
any of you have occassion to be in this "neck of the woods", just
give me a call and we can plan on going. As Joe can testify we do
have fun as well. Joe particularly liked my pet alligator,
Phideaux(pronounced Fido), but hes grown a bit now and I'm afraid
if I tried to flush him down the toilet it would just make him mad
and he would probably eat the toilet.

We fish for sac-a-lait(white perch or crappies), bream, blue gills,
Mason perch, catfish, and especially bass!! I would guess the largest
one I ever caught was 6-7 lbs. Recently they caught a catfish a
couple of camps over that weighed 15 lbs.

I go down to the camp 4-5 times a year usually staying a weekend
    and an extra day.

Occasionally I enter Cajun fishing or hunting stories in dialect.
Their choice and placement of English words is perculiar, but if
you understood Cajun French, you would realize what they are doing
is placing English words in the exact place as the French words.
Maybe some of you have seen Justin Wilson or Doug Kershaw on TV.
This is the way I heard the stories and I think it is a tribute
to their beautiful wit(nothing is sacred to them, least of all
themselves). They will go to great lenghts to see that you are both
comfortable and amused. I have watched them outdistance each other
with fish stories that border the supernatural. Most all my relatives
and many of my lifelong friends are among their numbers. If my dialect
gets too difficult to understand, just let me know and I'll explain
    it.

Sorry bout the volume, but its becoming damn interesting reading
about all the different types of fishing, carp, tuna, mackeral,
    smelt, ice(whats an "ice" ;-)).

    Bonne chance, mes amis....

Thanks for the clarification of fisherman vs. fisherperson!.
I do hope to make it down the Cape some year, there is a

I only have a 13.5 Super Sport w/35 Merc. Losing sight of

I relocated back to the U.S. from a two year assignment in Australia

    I had ever seen.
Upon my arrival in the U.S. I discovered this notes conference and
was HOOKED. How hooked you ask? Within two months I bought a 16'
Grumann Challenger Bass Boat with all the "Toys". Last week I traded
my 1987 Fiero for a 1988 Chevy Blazer to haul the boat around to
my new found favorite fishing spots. I also have a 16' fiberglass
canoe that I use on the pond just outside my back door, great for
pickeral fishing in late April. I also do some trout fishing at
the Souhegan (sp) River in Wilton just after ice out.

I got started fishing at a rather young age of around 3 years.
Until last year, all of my fishing was limited to TROUT. (It seems
that there are not many other species of fish that can survive at
9000 feet above sea level and with 9 months of winter.) So, I learned
how to trout fish both with flies and with spinning gear. I spent
many years fishing mainly for German Browns, brook trout, and
cutthroats. (Rainbows usually tasted mushy!) The most enjoyable
fishing back then was to saddle up the horse, ride him up the middle
of the river, and fly fish off his back. I admit, I was a meat
fisherman back then, but that was quite a few years ago.
Now, I am thouroughly enjoying fishing for the warm water species
of fish that are available on the East slope of the Rockies. I
am a total rookie at most of these, but am learning fast from a
years experience and this notes file. The thing I like most about
the warm water fish vs. trout is that warm water fish can be made
angry enough to hit something. If trout aren't feeding, you might
as well throw rocks. Warm water fish will hit out of pure anger.
I have done some Salmon fishing in Alaska, some saltwater in
Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, and the East coast. I now have a dedicated
fisherman coming up in my son who is 11. (Might be the 4#+
largemouth I let him mount this summer.) I hope to be able to take
him somewhere that he can be able to catch some major fish within
the next couple years. (read greater than 25#ers).
I hope that all out there had a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and with
have a VERY MERRY AND PROSPOROUS NEW YEAR.

Hi out there in "Fishin' land"

    Jim Mercurio
Manufacturing Engineer at Salem (NIO) N.H.
Reside in Kingston, N.H. (on the banks of Powwow Pond)

I'm into fishing in a big way. About 99% of my fishing is for bass
and the remaining 1% is on other species, fresh and salt water. I
belong to the Border Bassmen of Salem N.H. and have been actively
bassin' for 11+ years. I began with the Raymond Bassmasters in 1976
and am proud to say that "I've come a long way baby". That first
year I didn't even weigh in one bass (not a very good start), how
    embarrassing. I fished out of a 16ft MFG run-about with a Silvertrol
electric motor on the transom which pulled the boat backwards when
I was fishing. I mounted a swivel seat to the top of a metal cooler
I found at the town dump this was my livewell/fighting chair. I
installed this behind the bench seat on some green carpeted, 2X12's,
within reach of the electric motor. I had the fastest boat because it
was powered by a 50 horse Evinrude. There I was, fishing with my Burke,
Worms, Mepps spinners, Dare Devils and a custom made ultra-light
4-1/2ft rod, Orvis reel, and 4 lb test Stren line... I remember in 1978
I saw my first spinnerbait, boy did I have a good laugh,(looked
and sounded like something you'd put on a Chistmas tree as a
decoration). Little did we know it was to change they way I would
fish in the future. The user of this spinnerbait was Gene Gallagher,
then the editor of The New Hampshire Outdoorsman, he lived on
Powwow Pond and was an avid fisherman, he got it from, I believe,
Whopper Stopper to field test. Well I'm here to tell ya, the laughing
quickly ceased when he held up a stinger of 5 bass in the 4 to 6lb
class. Momma didn't raise no fool, it wasn't long before I was
throwing spinnerbaits with similiar success. Unfortunately this
didn't happen until my second year in the club. Well, enough of
the rambling, I hope to meet more of you guys and maybe get to go
    fishing together sometime.

Fished many years fresh and salt water in Philadelphia and New Jersey area.
Moved to Mass. in 1972 and did not fish until 1985. Crazy right! To much travel,
heavy workload, kids etc. But now I have my priorities straight.

Fish moslty fresh water these days. Do make an annual trip to Nantucket for
blues, would like to spend more time at Cape Cod Canal and Plum Island for
blues and stripers.

Majority of fresh water fishing is in the Northern part of Middlesex county,
especially Pepperell and Groton. But I do enjoy fishing different locations,
one of the reasons I like the DEC tournements.

Fish out of a 12'5" dory driven by a 3hp MinnKota. Not a bass boat but some
standards, but it meets my needs for now. Mounted a Hummingbird 1000 last
spring. Mrs. Santa gave me a color-selector this year, should be fun.

Mostly go after bass with an occassional trip for trout; but primarily, I just
like to fish.

When I started fishing I was into ultra-light. As I read this file I began to
spend more time fishing for bass. I began using a baitcaster last year and now
I am a beliver! This year I plan on learning to flip and pitch and make a few
trips to the Merrimack river for shad and smallmouths.

Have no hawg's to my credit(4lbs-19" best), but I think this may be my year.

I fish mainly for Bass but when ice first goes I give Trout and
Salmon a go on fly rod or ultra-lite rods. I believe in catch and
release of all Bass. I will take trout and salmon for the freezer
because I do love to eat fish. Do to the efforts of the stocking
program of trout in M.A. I feel this does not hurt the quality of
the trout fishing. My biggest BASS taken was on wild shinners during
my honeymoon in Florida. The BASS wieghed in at 9lbs 4oz. This was
on a guided trip on the Kissimee chain of lakes. Largest trout was
4lbs taken in Georgetown M.A. at Pantuckett Pond.

      Well, good luck to all.

At the present time I do not own a boat, so I spend alot of time
fishing with Jack Brickley. I spend most of my time fishing for
Bass and anything else I catch. I have not caught alot of big Bass
but I have caught quite a few in the 1-3 lbs. range. I also like
to Deep Sea fish. I have a 40lbs Cod credited to my name, as well
as alot of Taotog in the 15-25 lbs range. I am also the Treasuer
and Secretary of New England Bass Angling Association. So if you
are interested in some friendly competition you can contact me at
Dtn 248-4161 and maybe we can arrange something.

Always remember that those 1,2,and 3 puonders that you throw back
will someday be 8,9 and 10 pounders.

Catch and Release is a big part of my BASS vocabulary.

I've just gotten back into salt water fishing this past year after
a long absence. I fish primarily in Maine waters from my 22' Aquasport for
anything that swims. First Cod then Mackerel, Blues, and Shark. My best fish
this past year was an 11 ft Mako or Porbeagle shark (They both look very much
alike). I don't know what it weighed but it was a monster. I went sharking
primarily to gain offshore experience which I hope to put to good use on Tuna
next year.

In Winter I ice fish both locally and further north primarily for
Salmon . Smelt fishing through the ice on the Kennebec or Eastern Rivers is
another local Winter passtime which is a lot of fun.

My property borders Cobbosseecontee Stream which provides some excellent
Largemouth Bass fishing and an occational Brown Trout.

I moved to Maine 3 1/2 years ago to mix some of this good stuff into
life's overall equation: so far it's worked.

I recently moved to N.H. from Franklin Ma. When I was in Mass all
I fished for was bass. Now that I'm near some nice trout streams
I've been fishing for trout mostly but the bass in the Merrimack
have been catching me in the summer afternoons. I went on the advice
of a note in this file to the falls below the Hooksett dam. Lots
of smallmouths. I like fishing in rivers and streams because you
never know what you'll find. One day on the Merrimack I caught a
slimey eel, the next day a rainbow trout. Down in Mass i fished in
the Charles River on the Medway/Franklin line. Its been cleaned
up a lot in recent years but I still wouldn't eat any of the fish
    allthought they seem healthy enough.
I've been reading this file and getting a lot of good tips on
rivers to fish and I can't wait till spring (ice is for skateing):-).

Hi, I'm Mark Storm. I work in Spitbrook in Nashua NH and live nearby.

I also have a place in Moultonborough and ice fish on Winni and
love the spring and late summer salmon fishing there. I love spring
trout fishing with spinners in the streams. I also do a little
bass fishing with a 7 1/2 pounder as my largest.

Since a friend recently purchased a 20 foot Grady White, I'm doing
a little more in the salt for Blues and for Fluke.

I guess I'm saying if it swims, I fish for it.

    	Hi,

My name is Mike Robie (MWR), Londonderry, NH and I
Work at Spitbrook rd. with the VMS group.

I have been fishing in NH's back streams and ponds
all my life(26 years). But the best time I ever had
was last summer up in Pittsburg. Man! did we catch some
trout! 3 of us cought our limit in 2 hours. That was the
best fishing I have ever done. Already made plans to go back
       for 2 weeks this summer!

Picked up my license and a Hula popper last week at Petes gun
shop in Hudson, to try fishin' the biggins. Nothin' yet. But
soon, real soon I'm sure I land a hawg.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I need all I can get.

Hey, Coonass! Ever hear of C. C. Sandige's camp on Lake Bistineau?
I learned to water-ski there about 25 years ago and had the best
fish I ever ate in my life. Ole C.C. cooked up some Buffalo (Carp)
in a big old iron pot, and I (who couldn't even stand the sight
of suckers, much less eat one) almost made myself sick. Each piece
of the fish had a small piece of backbone sticking out of it for
a handle, and there were no other bones in it! Ahhhh, sweet memories.
Made me think of it when I saw your entry in this note.

My name is Gene Terrell. I have been with DEC for 5 years and
currently am at the FSL facility in Andover, MA (DAS).

I have been reading the file for months, but hadn't the slightest
idea how to make an entry. Finally did decide to get involved and
made my entry in note 84 (newest entry before mine was about two
years old so thought I'd best enter something here, too, even though
a couple of noters found me in the other one).

I have been out of fishing for about 15 years except for an occasional
trip to the local pond with the kids (don't know what happened to
me). I was raised in Texas and Louisiana around some mighty fine
bassin' holes, but never really got into the artificial bait sport.

Lately, I have had a natural craving for getting back into fishing
in a big way. I really appreciate all the valuable info I've been
able to pick up from this file. It will give me a headstart when
I hit the water. I have a boat ordered. Family compromise dictated
that I purchase a ski rig so ended up with a 15' Larson with a 70HP
Merc. Not the ideal fishing rig, but I'll make it work. Problem
is - it won't be in for another 3 weeks. Not sure if I can stand
    it!!!

Fishing is the great passion of my life. I fish fresh water for
trout and bass on a regular basis (ask my wife). I also *love* to
    fish in the salt.

I had a real lousy year last year for freshwater fish. I didn't
catch anything very big, and I got skunked alot. This year I seem
to be doing better. I did ok in the ocean last year as I caught
my first shark of consequence, a 200+ lb blue. That was a fight.

I don't have a boat yet, but I borrow my dad's canoe. My wife has
been served notice that we will, in fact, be purchasing a Grady-White
24 rigged up the wazoo as soon as we can swing it. This will be
at least a couple of years, however, as we have a creeper on the
way and may have to move from our condo to a house.

I am hell bent to catch a tuna. It's my goal for the summer. I'm
going sharking (weather permitting) on July 2nd out of Falmouth
on the Cygnet with Capt. Tony Tolentino. We'll be trying for Makos.
Then, on July 30, we'll be going out for white marlin (probably),
or tuna. Whatever is biting better. When it costs this much for
one day, you go after whatever is biting. At least I got my wife
involved in this type of fishing. She came with us last year, when
we went out for tuna. She really wasn't planning on fishing at all.
She was just going to watch us fish. And the fishing was slooooow.

In the afternoon, one of the live pogies started off on a trip
to Portugal. I had just taken the harness and gimbal off, but I
ran up to the bow where the mate was tending the rod. We thought
it was a tuna, but it turned out to be a blue shark. My wife taped
the whole thing. Then I was tending a rod on the bow, when the balloon
started swimming off by itself. After I set the hook on that one,
I let one of my buddies fight it in. This one was even bigger.

We killed that one. We all took home shark steaks and grilled them.
Nothing went to waste. Even the backbone was saved and sent to a
shark researcher. After we started cleaning the second shark, the
ocean came alive with sharks circling the boat. My wife was going
crazy. We put a belt on her, and a mako took her bait. She failed
to set the hook properly, and the mako jumped and spit the hook
after a 10 second fight. But at least my wife caught the bug.

This year we have three trips planned. The third trip, August 27,
(saturday) may have an opening or two so if anybody's interested,
send me some mail or respond to this note.

I have never caught a blue or a striper (not stripper), but I finally
got a surf rod this year. It's a 10 footer with a shimano bait runner
spinning reel spooled with 14 lb trilene. I figure I can probably
catch anything stupid enough to pick up my bait with that. I do
need a fishing partner, though, for these surf excursions. I prefer
to have somebody who's done it before so we don't have the blind
    leading the deaf and dumb.

I also like to fish for cod, pollock, haddock etc. That is when
I "meat fish." I don't waste anything so I don't feel bad about
keeping what I catch. In general, I keep what I can eat and toss
back the rest (freshwater). Deep sea fish like cod and pollock are
only released when they are undersize as they usually don't live
to make it back to the bottom. I have a big family, anyway, so it
all gets eaten. Freshwater fish are released except trout. Them's
    eaten'.

If anybody lives in the southern NH region and wants to go fishun'
I'd love the company. Drop me a line....

Loran, chart recorder, a couple of VHF radios and a ham rig keep

Narragansett Bay. Nice rig, 120 gallon gas tank, runs 30 knots in
1 to 3 seas, 20 knots in 3 to 5. I've been out by Block Island
when it kicked up to 8 to 11. Long ride back. Got to look at the

Boat #2 is an aluminum 14-1/2' Sea Nymph Fishing Machine with a

boat. Nice boat, by the way. Came with flat floor, carpeting,
swivel & pedestal seats, and a pumped live well. We trail it
around NH *only*, because of the $#@%$#$#% non-reciprocity of our
        boat registration.

Canoe #1 is a 17' Merrimack. We bought it because it was pretty.

My name is John Keyworth. I've been fishin for most of my life (39
years-I've still got two months to go before heading down the other
side of that big hill so don't rush me. :^)

Most of my fishing time has been spent on the south east shores
of Lake George, New York (bass, perch, lake trout, salmon, pike,
blue gills, pickerel) so if you have any questions please feel free
to ask. I take a couple of trips a year out to the cod grounds and
have been out stand up tuna fishing once (what a blast). In the
winter I make it out ice fishing a few times and in the fall I'm
in the woods and good for nothing according to my wife. I've got
one spoiled brat, Joshua age 13, that likes to go hunting and fishing
    with me.

Good luck to everyone in the coming years.

    Don Mac,

My wife came through with our first little fishing buddy, Sam, last
    Aug 23 - a long and lean 7lb 4oz. I bought him a Mickey Mouse Fishin' Kit
before he even came home from the hospital! Even though he's a lunker
already (17+lb) my wife won't let me take him ice fishing...
(Well, okay, maybe he *is* still a bit too young!)

Hey, maybe we can have notes on the singular joys and challenges
of raising a little fishermen! We could cover topics like: "How
to change a diaper while trolling for salmon" or "Toddler-proofing
your tackle box" or "Does Similac attract fish?" or "Baby's first
    lunker" or...

Anyhow, congratulations! Having a little one (your first, right?)
is a big change, a lot of work, and tiring (esp at first) but it's
    great! We've never looked back.

the little piscator turns out to be as low key as you are and has

Start the little ankle biter out right - no earring, no pony tail,

An 8lb 1oz baby girl was caught yesterday morning at Memorial Hospital
in Nashua by the Doctah and his wife. Mother and daughter are both doing
fine. She will be named Katherine Claire (nicknamed K.C.).

One thing though- she'll have to learn to be alot quieter or she'll scare

I wrote this many moons ago and just found out I never entered it.
So here goes...

WHO:	Kevin Phillips
WHERE:	CT SWS (based out of MDO, but always at customer sites)

I grew up on the Jersey Shore. When I was 14 when I worked as a mate
aboard a "party" boat for a couple of years. It was quite a bit of fun,
and a good deal of experience for a 14 year old. I learned a bit
about saltwater fishing in the process.

As a side affect of having 3 children in 4 years, I haven't done to much
fishing in the past few years. We just had our third (and final), this past
November. I hope that I'll get to do more fishing in the future (what an
optimist!).

When I do fish, the majority of my fishing time is spent going after
blues, tautog, fluke, and flounder. I also enjoy freshwater fishing, but
until I moved to Connecticut a few years ago, I wasn't around any decent
fresh water. There are some nice lakes and ponds for trout in this area.
I can't wait until I can bring my oldest out in a canoe!

As far as fishing in CT, I haven't done to much salt water fishing.
Long Island Sound isn't the cleanest stretch of water around, so I haven't
had to much motivation to fish here. There is also very limited access to the
water around here. Most of the fishing I do is in S.E. Mass and the Cape.

I've enjoyed following this conference over the past couple of years.
Keep up the good work.

Well we landed a 9lb 7oz baby girl July 7 @ 7:05am. We named her Lauren
Marie. My first child ,also a girl, was born April 24, 1987 and she
tipped the scales @ 10lbs 2oz. (Sarah Elizabeth) I've taken Sarah
fishing 3 times this year. I cast and set the hook for her (using a
lead head and grub) and she reels the fish in. 4 bass so far. She even
skunked me the last time out. She caught the only fish. She is a true
fisherman. When the fish jumps out of the water she gets all excited
and while she is reeling the fish in you'ld think sh e had a whale on
there the way the fishing rod is flying all over the place. I let her
hold the fish and release them after we unhook the fish. She gets
impatient when we aren't catching anything and manages to get soaked
everytime we go out. Of course when we get home she tells the best fish
stories. Hers was the biggest fish and stretches her arms apart to show
how big the fish was. I'm glad she enjoys it so much and I can't wait
to get the 2 of them out there fishing w/ me.

icefishing and wonder just how it works. (What happens when the
fish you catch is bigger than the hole you made? Don't the fish
get a little lethargic in the cold? What sort of fish does one

Work at ZKO, live in Concord, NH. It's a 10 minute walk from my back door
through woods and old granite cutting junk to the Merrimack and old cut-off
parts of the river.

Just started fishing again this year. It's been 12 years or so (high school).

Catching perch, pickerel, sunfish so far. Nothing fantastic, but
I'm having a great time! When the current in the Merrimack slows a bit I'll
take my canoe out and give that a try, but for now I'm thrashing around on
the banks.
