851.0. "Why Knot?" by TOOK::SWEET (Capt Codfish...Looking for Mr. Tuna) Tue Aug 16 1988 17:13

The other day after I had bought my $60 squid bar I was trying to
figure out what knot to use to tie this rig onto my 50lb mono
without tying about a 20lb knot to catch a 500lb fish. It occured
to me that my knot tying skills were less than adequette and that
there was no note on this most important aspect of terminal tackle.
In other words what good is high quality line, high priced lures
    if you tie lousy knots?

So lets here what knots everyone uses for different applications.
Also what good books are available? I would like to know how to
tie a bimmini twist and offshore swival knot? Also what is
a good knot for tying mono leader to dacron line?

The Bible of fishing know books is "Fishing Knots" (or something
like that) by Mark Sosin and Lefty Kreh. There, they teach you all
sorts of interesting knots giving tips on how to tie them and how
strong they are relative to line strength.

Stren also has a small booklet with more useful knots than you would
    ever need.

I've been using the uni-knot for almost everything these days. It
is easy to tie and has pretty good knot strength. You can use the
same knot to attach terminal tackle to a line, add a shot leader,
join two lines together and to snell a hook.

For applications where the knot doesn't have to be cast (attaching
trolling rigs, kite flying) I usually use a Bimini twist with an
offshore swivel knot. With tests that I have done, the line breaks
before the knot does with this combination. These knots are relatively
easy to tie, but impossible to explain without pictures...

    Bruce.
I can help you on this for sure. I'll even tie the first one for
ya. The best thing for Dacron to Mono is the "Old China finger trick"

Just cut the mono leader end to a taper and insert it into the hollow
core of the braided dacron. ( You ca curse the first time you do
it) After a few times it's real easy!
Try to insert a couple of feet if you can. If not , allow the mono
to penatrate the the dacron and tie a stopper knot

For lines of different diameters, I tie a standard nail not. I
use this to attach leaders to fly lines. For lines of similar
diameters, I use a barrel knot. I use that when attaching the
dacron backing on the fly reel to the flyline. When properly tied
and trimmed, both knots hold extremely well and have never presented
problems for me at the rod tip or in the reel.
