769.0. "Party Boat/Overnighters" by MERLAN::NSOSTORES () Wed Jun 15 1988 16:25

    Is there anyone who could give me some information about
    saltwater marathons, and overnighters? I would like to know
    what to expect, the boat i am going on is out of Smith & Gilmour
    at Hampton beach. I have been on the all day boat with them
    and it was a good trip.

    Expect anything and prepare for the worst. Not to sound glomy but
    the weather 100 miles out can change fast, be prepared for cold
    and rain and rough sea's. You may have nice weather but it is best
    to be ready in case you don't...it would be tough to have sit inside
    if it gets cold and wet and you don't have rain gear, remember most
    of these boats go out into the gulf of maine.

    got to run...more later.

769.3A poor outingSA1794::CUZZONESGod, I love this place!!!!Mon Jun 27 1988 16:5444

    I went out saturday on my first disappointing party-boat trip ever.

    The boat was the MIJOY 747 out of Niantic, Ct.

    Bad points:

    1. Dirty boat, no toilet paper or paper towels in the head.

    2. Long trip to the fishing grounds. We traveled over 3 hours from
    Niantic to somewhere off Block Island.

    3. Not enough mates. 2 mates on a 60 footer with 30-40 passengers.

    4. No PA system. I like to hear from the Captain from time to time.
    I would have liked to know why he spent 15 minutes circling before
    anchoring every time and why he moved 100 feet every half hour.

    5. Too many puppies, not enough cod. Final tally was 13 cod on
    the boat. Must have been 100 dogfish.

    6. No choice between bait or jigs. Everyone got a bucket of clams.
    There probably would have been fewer sharks if some/most of us had
    been jigging.

    The funny thing was that most people were regulars and not
    disappointed. I guess because this was the last weekend for cod
    (bluefishing begins this week) they were happy to take what they
    could get. But $30 + $5 for rod rental is a high price for one or
    two fish with most people (me included) getting skunked.
    And with competition across the harbor, they ought to have been
    trying harder.

    Next time:

    1/2 day fluke trip or

    back to the Yankee Fleet. The longer carride is worth a shorter
    boatride. I think I better appreciate the Yankee class, amenities
    and professionalism now that I have seen a more average operation.

    Don, if there's a better place for this, please move it.
769.4Not too bad at Hampton Beach...CLYPSO::GOODYThe answer is ...... 42.Mon Jun 27 1988 19:2516
    Sorry to hear about your trip. Although I haven't been on many,
    it sounds like I would never go there.

    We (a group of DECcies) went out of Hampton Beach last Friday.
    It was an all day trip for Cod on Al Gauron's "THUMPER".
    There were 35 of us and everyone on board caught something.
    I think there were a total of 40-45 fish caught (Cod - 3-6 lbs.)
    The price was $25.00 each (including rod and bait.)
    We had two mates and the captain. They did a very good job, I thought.
    We plan to go out for Blues in a month or so.

    I'm not trying to rub it in, just relaying info in case you want
    to try a different place.

769.5GOOD FISHING FLEETMERLAN::NSOSTORESI don't know...Thu Aug 11 1988 13:0616

         I agree that Al Gaurons is the best fleet around, i go
    on the all day boat the Northern star its a 90ft boat with
    3 engines, it has 4 mates and the captain is allways around
    to inform people whats going on down under. The boat offers
    2 baits or jigging and runs 7-4 all week, reservations are
    a must for Fridays thru Sundays 1-603-926-2469.

        good luck
