938.0. "`89 Worcester Expo" by RAINBO::MACINTYRE (Fish are rising up like birds) Tue Jan 03 1989 15:08

Time again for the Eastern Fishing and Outdoor Expo at the Worcester
    Centrum - Febuary 1-5.

DEC discount ticket order forms are available at personnel.
(regular $6 - advance $4) Ordering the tickets in advance saves
you the long wait at the booth at the centrum, as well at the $2
    discount.

We've had a good time meeting there the last couple of years, look
forward to getting together again this year.

Maybe TBDW will take us to one of his favorite bars again!

    See ya there,

I'd like to propose Friday 2/3 late afternoon/evening to meet.
(of course as in years past this will probably run into early Saturday
morning in some poor excuse for a bar that TBDW had dragged us into...)

See note 570 for last years excursion.

And as soon as someone sees the schedule of seminars, please post
    them here. thanx, donmac

I thought that was BassBuster Fletch's watering hole. He seemed
to know the hooker at the bar ;-). Too bad he can't defend himself
    here :-(.

I'm on for friday night. Any chance Coonass will join us again?

Ok....I'm up for Friday nite. Fish Factory Fletcher will probably be with
me as we've already marked our calendars. I just hope TBDW does a little
better in his choice of bars to take us. Fletcher was really getting
nervous when that hoo... ah.... barmaid started roaming her hands all over
his body! The funny part of it all was that Ranger Ron was getting jealous!

Looking forward to this annual event. Time to start stashing away some
mileage money!

BB, the highlight of the evening is between YOU and ME and seeing who's BASS
TALES are the BIGGEST and BESTEST!

Just make sure that your beer hall has enough room for us all. That
hole-in-the-wall joint we went to last year prompted me to take a dose of

Last year there was a guy selling (among other things) books from
"The Hunting and Fishing Library" that is advertised in all the
magazines for $16.95. He was selling them for $12.95. Not bad! I
bought the one on Largemouth Bass, and found it very informative.
If he's got them again this year I'll definitely add another one
    to my library.

It seemed to me that there weren't too many deals on stuff like
rods and reels, but lots and lots of hype - "The new BEASTBUSTER
reel with all the CRANKIN' POWER to keep on pullin' when the wimpy
reels fall to pieces!!" "The NEW IMPROVED *WHIPSNORT* ball-bus...
er, that is BASS-BUSTIN' HYPER-GRAF-FIGHT with all the BACKBONE
YOU NEED for HAULIN' IN those PESKY LUNKERS!!!" (yuck, I just want
to go fishing, not turn into a brainless idiot) Anyway, there did
seem to be a few good bargains in lures, especially quantity stuff
    like worms and grubs.

What sort of deals have you guys found there? I'll be going with
my brother on Thurs night, and want to be prepared!

Tell us more about the Jerry McInnis show last night. I was planning
on going to his show tonight but can't make it.:-( I watch his
show on TV all the time. It's my favorite fishing show. It's kind
of a laid back, country type show with a good variety of fish species
    being taken.

I saw Jerry last night....in fact I was the lucky recipient
of his "guaranteed to catch fish" bait. Jerry spoke mostly of tackle
and that the "feel" of a rod was more important than the strength.
He discussed how he chooses a rod, the stiffness near the handle,
the "whip" at the end and the need for balance when the reel is
on. He also spoke about the need for line changing and how 4# line
is a whole different ball game. He went through a technique for
casting with a bait caster, keeping the handles to the side and
getting your wrist involved with the cast.

The man is great, he made everyone feel that they were his friend.
    Good stuff.

The most interesting part of the expo was watching Lefty Kreh. I followed some
of his pointers, and as I promised, I went out Saturday in the ice with my
fly rod and made some of the longest, most accurate casts of my life. I think
that it would be better on water as there is more resistence to get the leader
moving against but I impressed myself. I could even get the mends out in the
line in the (more or less) spot I wanted them. A hint: Practice casting with
one of those wrist-thingyies that bowlers use (I used an ace bandage) to keep
the wrist from moving very much, that way there is less to concentrate on. The
other single best thing I learned from him is wherever you stop the rod tip for
the first time (on either back cast or forward cast) is where the line is
going to go. That was a big part of my problem--I was casting into the ground!

It was great to meet all you who attended. Fish Factory Fletcher was
disappointed as TBDW forgot to invite his "friend".

Looking forward to fishing with y'all in the spring.

Tim

    Tim,

I was there for all three shows of Lefty (3:30,5:00 and 8:00) and
the man is one great fisherman!! If you haven't read any of his
books you should pick one up. He makes casting look too easy.

I went to the beer stand at 8:00 to say hello to the rest of the
fishing boys but I didn't know who to look for. I stood around
for about 5 minutes and went back to the show.

I'll catch up with you'all at the next outing.

Jerry ran a little over and we didn't get to the beer booth until
about 8:15 or so. I didn't see you wandering around afterwards.
Did you stop by Les's booth and tell him Donmac sent you?

I saw Lefty last year and he made flycasting look so easy and fun
    I almost started up myself.

    You were there FRIDAY night?

    Sorry we missed you.

Seems like a lot of us passed in the night, so to speak. Maybe we
should form a loosely structured organization, maybe the DFCC (Digital
Fishing Conference Club) or some such thing, and have customized
fishing hats made up with our very own logo. That way we could spot
one another at the fishing show, at the opera, at the statehouse,
in four-star restuarants, at church... anywhere we go! Think of
it: the convenience; the prestige; the respect and envy of non-members.
    I think it's a tremendous idea!

I like the idea of a hat so we can identify each other. Does
anybody have an idea where we can get some made up? I was at the
expo on staurday and am sure I could have meet a couple of fishing
noters there if there had been a way to identify them.

I know of a place to get them made up in Marlboro, if yo want.
What we need is some one to make up the art work and I will go down
there to see how much. Last time we used that place for hats it
came to about 6 bucks apiece for the hats including set up charges.
That was for 16 hats. I am sure the more we get the cheaper it
    gets.

So we need a C.A.D. guy to put Don Macs idea on file and make it
    hat size.

Maybe we should look for a graphic artist in our midst. CAD may
be great for circuit boards, but may look a little clumsy trying
    to do a leaping fish...

I ought to send you guys copies of the birth announcement for our
    son: Dad, Mom and baby are in a canoe; and Mom are getting skunked;
baby Sam, with a grin on his face, has a giant, fighting bass on
the line..! I did it on a Macintosh, copying (loosely) the leaping
bass from the Bass Pro catalogs.

I like the idea of the hats - I should, I thought of it! One thing,
if we do go for it, we shouldn't be cheapskates and get cheapo hats,
(like the ones Bass Pro gives out for nothing in their special deals)
rather, we should get good quality, comfortable ones we'd actually
like to wear fishing. One possibility is the corduroy type I've
seen a few times - usually a step or two in quality above the cheap
    stuff...

Don Mac, I really like your design concept - says it all!

I did up some shirts awhile back for my white water tube race team
and had good luck with a place in Nashua. I gave them a call and
asked what 25 hats would go for and they quoted $3.25 per hat.
The setup charge would be between $10-$25, so from this place we're
looking at around $4/per. I haven't gotten as far as asking about
different quality of hats, we can see what's offered. Cordoroy hats
are nice, but in the summer I think they're too hot.

A few people have already told they really like the logo/name that I
posted - by the way, the crude drawing there wis supposed to be
a bass leaping out of a terminal... (someone asked... 8^)

Go for it, guys. Whatever you do, don't involve Joe. He has terrible
taste in hats. TBDW confided that the only reason he took us to
that sleazy bar last year was he knew Joe's hat would get us turned
away at the door of any place respectable.

Hey Don ... you could design the logo but does it have to go on
a hat ? How about T-shirts ... how about fishing towels ... how
about jacket patches. Strike the towel idea. I'm not going to
acknowledge some idiot waving a towel over his head in the Centrum.

I could go for a mesh hat vs corduroy, provided it is of high quality,
has a good seatband inside, and FITS! I'm very leary about the kind
of hats normally provided by t-shirt and novelty companies, because
I feel that they are more likely to be interested in profit margin
and low price. The Cabela's hat I have is fine, but the Bass Pro
one is awful! I can hardly get it to fit, the sweatband digs
into my forehead - I can't stand it. So, if we get hats made up,
lets do it right and spring for better quality ones that we'll want
to wear for more than just the novelty of it.

    DonMac,

I've gotten a lot of useful information from this file, so I'd like
to "pay" you guys back by helping out with the design. I've put
together a very simple logo based on your idea. The fish is the
tough part, so for now I've substituted a fishing rod. I'll mail
you a copy of it. I don't work in CAD or Graphics Design, so feel
free to hack away at it. It's done on a Vaxmate using Freelance
Plus so its easy to change colors, fonts, etc.

Let me know what you think. If it looks good I'll try to get a
few copies to some centrally located people.
