1040.0. "Bass in Mass "Already"" by GIAMEM::GRIFFIN () Mon Mar 20 1989 12:02

I have not had a chance to get out fishing for the last three
weeks due to trips. I managed to get out Saturday morning this past
weekend. Me and my buddy started at 6:30 in the river. He got a
5" yellow perch on a worm and I got a 8" bass on a crankbait. He
said I was lucky cause only live bait would work this time of year.
Not being satisfied with this action I convinced him to try a
pond I had scouted earlier. By 7:30 we were there and we tried a
spot he had picked...nothing...then around 8:00 we tried a spot
I had picked out. I got a good bass 15" and I would guess just
under three pounds. My buddy still said I was lucky... two more
fish later of 16" and 15 1/2" he decide he would try one of those
crankbaits. He caught bottom and lost the lure..so I told him
to grab another and tie it on he did and proceeded to loose that
one. In the mean time I had pulled in 2 more bass 15" and 15"
as he lost the second and last lure of that type in my box as I
pulled in my 6th bass 16" . By now he was ripping and
rather than loose a good fishing buddy for the season I reeled in
and we went directly to the bait store where I had purchased these
crankbaits . He bought 5 of them and put some new line on his reel
and we returned. Together we pulled in 7 more bass ranging from
15" to 16" He got 3 and I got 4. about 10:30 the clouds rolled in
and the temperature dropped and the fantasy ended.

Some technical info to share. Air temp was about 45 and sunny with
almost no wind. Water temp at 1' was 46. We were fishing from shore
using a rattling crankbait. I would cast it as far out as possible
and let it sink, then lift it off the bottom and and reel in
verrryyy sloooowwwwwllllyyyy and usually by the third reel I could
feel a good bang like the fish was bumping the lure I would count
a 1001 and set the hook, 80% of the time the hook found home
and I had a hell of a fight on my hands, one of the fish even broke
water completely on the way in. We released all the fish, so we
can go back next year and catch them as 5 lbers.

Well, this isn't Mass. However, I have fished 3 different seasons
in the last 3 weeks. Three weeks ago, ice was forming on the edges
of the belly-boat. Only 1 little 16" bass. Two weeks ago, water
temperature was in the lower 50 degree range in the shallows, and
bass and pike were exploding out of the moss for shallow running
crankbaits and rattle-traps. Largest was a 4 1/2# bass but FAST
ACTION. Some even came up and hit buzzbaits. Last weekend, the
surface water temperature was back down into the 40s in the shallows
and fishing action had slowed considerably. Only 13 fish in 6 hours
of fishing with the largest being a 5 1/2# bass. Since she was
only a little over 19 1/2 inches, she wasn't even a keeper. Minimum
in that lake is 20". Now, it's snowing, blowing, and COLD. Where's
    summer?

Sounds like you guy's had a ball, I dont imagine you would tell
anyone where you were fishing, right????
Just thought i'd ask, I wouldn't blame anyone for keeping that
    place a secret!

         Keep up the good work,

Re .2 Yup, you are right I won't
Re .3 Nope, you are wrong
Re .4 I think you got his number Wayne

Stopped by this morning for 45 minutes before work. Air temp
was about 28 cold! I hooked a small one on the first cast
about 13 1/2 inches, still a good fight. The action was a little
slower so I tried rippin the lure for a footor two the letting it
sink. This got me 4 more bass (3) 13-14 and one 15. I missed another
small one and also one that I didn't get a good hooket on and could'nt
try to set it again cause he was rippin line off the reel, the it
went limp... I cast a few more times after that and caught one more
13 1/2. Not as good as Saturday but still a great way to start the
morning. One draw back my fingers tips are still stinging from
getting my hands wet releasing the 6 Bass I landed.

Hmmmm...On the way into work ay?...

I'll continue with the process of elemination...

My guess is that there's a stream that exists the pond/lake
in the NE corner. If it's the one I'm thinking of, I use
to fish it during lunch a bunch of years ago. I've always
wanted to put a canoe on the pond but never have.

My bet is that this pond is no secret to those who have worked
and fished in the MRO area...

Re .9 Sounds good, lets work out a time. North brook is in my back
yard. I pulled some lunkers out of the pond by the holding dam,
but it's a pain carrying the canoe in, I am working on a cart to
    make it less painful.

Re .10 see .11 for warm weather, in winter I park in the restraunt
and skate to where I want to fish.

Re .12 Sounds good let's set up a time. What are we going after
Trout, Bass, others? I fish for almost anything. I have a 16'
Allagash and 28 # MinnKota and a couple of rods and reels.

1040.14hot dam..there's two dams.....STOWMA::LANGEThu Mar 23 1989 16:3321
Now ... there are two holding dams in Berlin....one is off Pleasant
St. ...and the other is off Linden Street. I used to fish the one off
Linden St. ALL the time.... At the far end where the steam come's in
from RT 62...there is a big rock out in the water...I laid some timber
down over a section of "swamp" to get to it... is it still there?...
Also during that ton of rain we had 2 years ago...I made a log bridge
to the island that's out there....

Now you have me going...I want to get down there....I know the people
who own the sand pit that has the gate locked on the entrance...maybe I
could ask them to let me in with the jon boat...

    re: canoe transport:
I have this old golf cart (pull type)...that can be strapped to my
canoe. It has 10" wheels...and one person can tote the canoe Anywhere
with this. You are welcome to "use" it if you would like...seeing how
we live in the same thriving metropolis....

Like you say....lets set up a time.

1040.15Where we gonna go ... When?GIAMEM::MROWKAMon Mar 27 1989 12:3833

Yeah That's the one, off Linden St. I come in from Rt. 62 in the
sand pit also. I think I even know the rock. The island looks
like there is a pathway out to it but I have never walked out there.
I (We) have almost always used a canoe. We used to drive in til
the police came down one day to chase out motocross and atv's and
asked us to leave also. I am friends with Henry so I won't drive
in again. The golf cart sounds like a good idea. I have tried to
go in with waders "Disaster". I think you need a canoe to fish
this pond and I kind of like the idea that you have to portage in
your boat and equipment to fish it, keeps the pressure down. I have
had some days when I was skunked and some days when I had fish
every 5 minutes. I have landed some 3 to 5 lb Bass and if they aren't
biting you can almost always get 24" Pickrel. I think there are
some Trout in there , but, I have not caught one yet. As far as
I know the pond is not named and I call it North Pond, for lack
of a more imaginative name. This pond does'nt show up on topo maps.
The other pond you refer to off Pleasant street is called Brewer
Brook Pond. I have only fished it from the shore. It has tons of
Yellow Perch some pretty big. We have brougt kids there for
    some consistient action.
Lets set up a time.... I have committments on April 1,2
8,9 and 15 and Friday evenings. Maybe some day after work or,
take the afternoon off and get out from say 12 to 6 or so...
I will fish almost anywhere, I not to keen on suggesting a place
cause it always seems you tell someone about a great spot and then
you bring them there and get skunked or catch 5" Johnny Roaches.
Have you ever fished the no name "Horseshoe Pond" I can't remember
the name of the street it is off. It's up the hill about 5-10 miles
south south west of North Pond.

Gee... I have some of those...Should of tried them yesterday...
Got skunked for the first time this year... over at A1. Tried
rattlin crankbaits, Mepps spinners/ brass willow leaf, Brown
and Orange spinnerbaits, Black tiny torpedo, Rebel silver tiny popper,
Black rubber worms, orange / gold and pearl white / silver
3" rubber grubs on slider jig, sinking and floating Rapala's 2"
and my partner tried shiners and worm's. He actually caught one
Johnny Roach, but in my book that's about equal to being skunked.
We tried deep water, meddium water, back water shallows...
Oh well guess that's what make the days when your catching
    them so exciting.
