1003.0. "'89 Terminal Angler's Invitational" by STOWMA::LANGE (Insanity!) Mon Feb 27 1989 19:45

    O"FISH"AL organizational "volunteer"(?)

Heck,I'll give it a shot...but with Don Mac as last years fall tourney
organizer,it'll be a tough act to follow...

1st off...how about if everyone that thinks they might want to
participate in this years tourney suggest some places, and dates that
    would be good.

I,for one, would rather it be on a Saturday mid to late may.

My first choice would be at Hopkinton Lake,a.k.a. Stumpfield Marsh in
    N.H.

Another vote for Stumpfield, a Saturday in May would be fine.

Maybe the 20th? (Winni Derby weekend for salmonoiders)

May 7th is the NH Open and May 13th kicks off our ABC season.

The 20th of May sounds good but, hey, not in NH. Anyone care to
organize an alternative competition in Mass (not me) ? Les, the
mighty Quin sounds attractive ... your organizational skills have
already been demonstrated ... whaddaya say?

Anytime is fine with me. I suggest Pawtaukaway (sp) in N.H. as a
location. This lake is large enough for everyone, but the ramp area
in Fundee Bay is close to weedy fishing spots that would be within
easy access of canoes or smaller boats in the tournament.

The 20th of May sounds like a good day... but I have to agree with
.3 about not in NH. They are they only one of 49 states that don't
accept out of state boat registrations.

Quin..d sounds good, A1 has some spring hawgs and is good even earlier
like May 6 or April 29. Quabog including the river. Whitehall
    Reservoir.

I have to reconsider my replyin .4. First I was agreeing with .2
not.3. Second how much is the NH boat registration. Third how much
is the NH licence. Fourth where do you get NH pond and lake depth
maps. I guess if the cost isn't prohibitive I can fish NH also.

    re: A1 in Wes'bro...

all you Ranger/Big Boaters....charge your trolling motor to it's
fullest...and hook a few batteries in series, cause if you start your
big motor here you WILL lose your lower end. This is without a doubt my
favorite fishing spot in central mass, but unless you run an elec.
    motor(close to the surface),or paddle...you won't have a fun day

Those of you who have been to Stumpfield, picture the furthest section
of the lake from the ramp (all the stumps)...
    Now A1,except for about a 10-15 acre section,is ALL trees,and stumps.
the lake is a "Forest with a lake floor" I've run into problems with
manuevering my 17' canoe in some spots....I love this place...but I
can't see holding a tourney there with so many noters having big boats.

I don't know what a non-resident fishing liscence goes for in NH
but its around $12 for a 3-day and $25 for a season. The boat
registration is $10 for a 14' tiller. Console models are higher. A
nice feature is they don't want to collect a sales tax from you
like some other states we know of. :-)

May 20th @ Hopkington sounds good to me.

How about Maine ? Get some of new blood in this thing .Not that
any of us in Maine know anything about bass fishin , but we would
be glad to learn and to do all of the preliminary work. I have offer
this in the past with no interest but thought that I would offer
it again just in case any of you are interested . There are plenty
of lakes available with permits open , there are a lot of open
tournaments that any of you could elect to participate in if you
    desire .

Great idea Al! How about Great East Lake. It is on the ME, NH
border so any boat registration should work. An ME non-resident
1-day fishing liscence is $6 for the MA people.

Al, would you like to see if we would require a permit?

Great East Lake isn't a bad idea. Never been there but I've heard
it's good fishing. And it does avoid the boat registration problem.
Any campgrounds on the lake? It's not *too* far away either.

I'd certainly be up for Stumpfield or Pawtuckaway in late May. Great East
Lake even sounds interesting especially considering that few of us have ever
fished it. Almost no one would have an unfair advantage of being intimately
familiar with the waters.

During our annual get-together after the Centrum, we all agreed that
Monomonac has seen the last of DEC bassers. It was also (generally) agreed
that more NH fisherman would venture south into MA for a tourney or two as
the MA boys would (and have in the past) reciprocate by coming north to
"God's Country" for a couple of tourneys.

In any event, let's get something going. I'd even be willing to organize a
Stumpfield Tourney again seeing as I did the last few up there.

The state laws in ME. would require that we did obtain a permit
, this would allow us the right to use our live wells and hold the
tournament , the laws sta<te that each lake can have a max of 4
tournaments per year, there are some superior lakes here that wouldnot
be filled up , the permit fee for an open tournament would be 30$
I will check into some of the possabilities and report back asap
    as to campgrounds , etc.

The folks there talked about having two spring tournaments. One
in N.H and one in MASS. That mud hole you call a lake with all
the stumps in it up north is great but too far for most mass people,
plus the good old boat registration problem your state has!!

We can have one in Mass (should be warmer first) then one in N.H.

I would like to point out that if the tournament is held at Quinsig, May 20th
would be the last weekend you can fish without paying a ramp fee.
Memorial weekend, the following week, there starts a launching fee at the
state ramp off route 290. The state did this last year, charging for ramp
fees only on Saturdays and Sundays. I believe the cost was $5.00.

re .21 - Les, yes there is a 2 fish limit in NH during the spawn
(apr/may). And, no, NH boat tags are not legal in Mass.

I don't mind going to Mass for a tourny, but I could only fit one
DEC tourny into May (and even that would not be definite). If I tried
to make two notesfile tournaments say, May 20th & 27th, that would
make 5 tournament weekends in a row for me, with the NH Open and
    our ABC tournies.

I'm kinda in the same boat as Don as I would not be able to fish in two
tourneys on back-to-back weekends. I'm doing the May 7th NH Open at
Pawtuckaway, then another one tentatively on the 20th (in MA or NH). If I
tried to do another one on the 27th, my wife would go thru the roof and
probably take an ice pick to my aluminum boat! Not to mention that you'd
probably never see me for the rest of the year!

	*** NEWS FLASH ***

Unidentified body found floating in Merrimack River. Face was
totally mutilated and all body orifices were stuffed with plastic
worms. Several fishing rods were also found protruding from
rectum of the corpse. Although an autopsy has yet to be performed,
piscatorialcide has not been ruled out.

So someone make a decision quick. Although NH does have a 2-fish limit during
May and June, I expect that we'll have a NH tourney anyway. At least a team
event brings the total to 4 fish.

    >> How tough is it to put a Mass boat in Maine? <<

Bart, it depends on the access road and ramp. ;-)

Your mass registration is good for anywhere except NH and Alaska. If you
fish a boarder lake, a fishing liscence should be good from either state.
The exception is the Connecticut River where a Vermont non-resident
    liscence is no good.

The reason I mentioned Great East is that a Maine or NH fishing liscence is
acceptable. Maine sells a non-resident 1 day liscence for $6. Any
registered boat is acceptable (except Alaska registration).

    I agree with .33 .31 .29 .27 .44 .6 .42, Quinsig. But it sounds like
the 20th of May might be a bad time for a lot of folks, can we have

on registering a boat, now this year the state is going to go to BOW

Now remember that I DIDN"T say this....but there are no patrols

Sounds like May 20 is a good date, but, Quinsig as the location
has conflicts. How about some alternative locations? I can think
    of a few:

Whithall Res. in Westboro has a nice ramp, lots of parking
and alot of islands and shallows on the east shore.

Bare Hill Pond in Harvard has a town beach with a nice ramp
and plenty of parking. It is closed to the public when
swimming opens up, but, I don't think that is til
Memorial day. The owner of the bait shop I frequent
goes there and has gotten some 6 lber's.

Buffimville Res in Charlton has a good ramp with lots of parking.
It also has some nice standing timber at the south end
of the lake and plenty of bassy shoreline.

I have Mass F&G depth maps of these and more that tell about
ramps species etc. So where it gonna be...???

1003.73Rules for the TournementFOOZLE::SCHOLZRon....and thanks for all the fishMon Mar 20 1989 18:5864
These are the rules for the tourney. I have just taken them from
the original DEC Bassmaster Classic. They are basically the same
ones we have used for the last three years.

THE RULES: as far as we see them now.

First Rule: Keep all the other rules simple. This is for fun not
    profit.

Second Rule: Remember First Rule at all times.

Okay, now that I got my attempt at humor out of the way, lets list
    some of the basic rules.

We won't punish for dead fish, but all contestants must have some
form of live well. This can be a cooler which you change the water
in as needed, or anyother form of "resonable" container. The "intent"
here is to keep as many fish alive as possible, so we can "catch
and release." Dead fish can be taken home for dinner by those wishing
to. I suggest you all use some form of live-well enhancer..Catch
and Release is one brand name and only costs about the price of
a six-pack. Since it relaxes the fish, it also can turn a "short"
    into a keeper ;^)

This is not a "sponsered" event, by DEC or anyother agency. We are
    on our own.

It will be an 8 hr. tournement. Starting time 7:00 (AM) and check
in at 3:00 (PM). You can check in when ever you want to if you wish
to leave early. (if there is nobody there to check you in, you will
have to wait.....the checkers are going to be fishing too) Be there
by about 6:00 (AM) for drawing and launching.

Nets are allowed and you can use any bait on a rod EXCEPT live bait.
No hand lines and such. Rod and Reel only.

Starting position will be determined by draw and the last draw will be
the "offical" starter. The intent here is give the smaller boats enough
time to clear the area before the next one goes off. Any kind of boat
is allowed, and you are responsible for your own safety. We won't check
for life vests, etc.. Insurance and such is the fishermans'
responsiblity. Conoes go last and don't have to draw a number.

First boat on a position has the right of way. If the boat is moving
in a direction you can't jump in front of it, but may go in behind
it. Distance of control is an "estimated" 100 yds in front and 50
yds behind. The idea is to not crowd other boats, like we do all
the time when we fish regularly. Remember that there will be other
non-tourney fisherman out there, so watch who you yell at. If you
want to come in and talk to your friends in other boats, stand off
    and ask first. BE POLITE.....

That is about it. If any of you have any other ideas or comments
on these rules, please input them.

The entry fees will be the same as the last tournies. 10 bucks per
man (20 per team) and 5 for the lunker pool (optional). We will
pay out the first five places or the first three places, depending
    on the number of entries.

    Tight lines, Ranger Ron

1003.82Quinsig the 20th Alive and wellLUDWIG::MATTSONWed Mar 22 1989 11:1825
    Folks,

Look, I hate to sound one sided on this issue but here goes.
This is a very low key tournament that is basicaly to have fun with
your fellow DEC employess. When this file was created a good deal
of the votes where for Quinsigamond on the 20th. That's where a
stake was put into the ground planning started taking place.
It seems some of you are involved with a lot of other tournaments
that have strict rules. It appears that we could go on for months
trying to find the time and place that fits for everyone. I really
believe that the 20th of May is an ideal time for most folks and
after Memorial day it's going to be harder with increased boater
traffic and other things coming up. I know there's a great deal
of folks who live close to the Worcester area that will be there.
So you need to make the choice,if your involved with other
organizations that won't allow you to fish that day so be it. This
tournament is small potatoes compared to the federation trails.
Please don't take this the wrong way I wish everyone could be there
and the more the merrier. But there will be other DEC tournaments
that anyone in this notes file can plan.
So Far we have 8 teams already signed up and I know there are
a lot more folks out there close to Quinsig who haven't signed up
yet. Full steam ahead for the 20th at Quinsig.

Johnny, m'man, I don't think we need to recreate the rules. There
is a set somewhere in here that has been in force for the last couple
of years and they seem to have served well. A team is made up of
2 fisherpeople - the combined weight of the fish caught by each
2-person team (10 fish if you're fortunate) is what counts towards
the gold/silver/bronze medals. To be fair, each team should be
2 people; no more, no less. Those without boats can often find
boat-owners without partners and vice-versa. This may be an informal
event but there's $ and pride at stake all the same.

The date the 20th is fine. But keep it on Quinsig is not fair
to all the active readers of this file.

As you said this is not a big buck tournament, its for a bunch of
guys who work together, but by keeping it there 1/2 of all the active
people who have run most of these tournaments in the past can't
    fish.

This tournament is suppose to be fun for all of us. Most of us
would be there even if there was no money. There are many lakes
with in 1/2 hour of Quinsig. Why can't we just move the site.
WEBSTER LAKE is nice that time of year and it's 1/2 hour more on
    290!! with a better ramp!

So what do you say RR lets move the site. One question who will
not fish this tournament if the site is moved, to lets say Webster?

No one right!! So lets just move the site.

1003.99What do you want to Do?LUDWIG::MATTSONThu Mar 23 1989 11:0326
    Gang,

Don't take me wrong I'm not a bad guy. The reason I stuck by
Quinsig is because it's real easy to get to from the highway(Hell
if you miss the exit ramp you drive right over it),and this was
the one place that the majority seemed to agree on. I don't have
any problem on where to fish. But I feel we need to decide now so
the folks that want to pre fish the area for whatever reason can.
Seems that out of the 12 plus teams and additional folks that
have signed up to fish this tournament, most are real close to the
Worcester area. It also seems that the NH folks aren't going to
be strong in attendance for reasons Don Mac stated. So now I think
we can look into a different place to fish if thats what the majoriy
wants. If not then we stay with Quinsig.
The two alternate choices I like is first Singletary Lake in
Millbury. It's only 15 minutes away from Quinsig and most of the
local folks in the tourney have probobly fished there. To my knowledge
I haven't seen a boat ramp fee there. Or Webster Lake,I've never
fished it but here it's pretty nice. Again since most of the folks
signing up appear to want to stay close to the Worcester area I
don't feel we should move very far from it.
Guys you need to get back and decide where we want to fish so
we can get this thing resolved.

    						thanks,
    							Gary

1003.118Directions to SingletaryLUDWIG::MATTSONThu Mar 30 1989 12:2227
    Gang,

Here's the basic directions on getting to Singletary Lake. No
matter where your coming from get on RT 146 going to Millbury. Get
off at the Millbury exit marked West Main Street. If you where coming
in from Worcester you would go right at the end of the exit ramp.
If you where coming in from the opposite direction which is from
Sutton, then you go left at the end of the exit ramp. Either way
you need to be heading away from the center of Millbury.
You proceed on West main street away from Millbury and towards
Sutton. About a mile up the road from where you got off of the exit
ramp, you'll come to a slight fork in the road. Right at that fork
is the Royal house of Pizza. You want to bear right. This is still
West Main Street, don't bear left this is Sutton Road. After you go
by the fork in the road the boat Ramp for Singletary is about a
1/2 mile up the road on the right hand side. A good land mark is
when you pass the Fire Station the ramp is the next thing coming
    up on your right.
There are some short cuts to getting there for more local people
but the route I just described is the easist and shouldn't get you
    lost.
YO BASSIN BOB do you have a map for this lake. Even though I've
fished it the most I don't have one and would like to get one. If
anybody needs anymore info drop me a line.

Oh B.B., you just don't like Singletary.........The ramp is real
good and even with the low water, which should be higher by May
20th you can launch a PT. boat there. The parking is a little on
the short side, but you can park up on the street....just don't
get over on to the sidewalk.....they like to ticket people who do
that......There is room at the ramp for about 12 trailers and the
street can hold another 15 or so......I don't think anyone will
have a problem. Just get there around 6'ish and we will have plenty
of time to do everything we need to.

Gary, thanks again for the offer to help.....keep up keeping track

I stopped by the boat ramp for Singletary last night on the way
home from work. Yes the water is a little low but boats can still
launch in it fine. With the amount of rain happening lately the
water will be up to normal before you know it. So unless you have
a 50ft cabin cruiser, I doubt you'll have any problems launching
at Singletary. For you first timers there if you go to prefish, when
your launching your boat and standing on your trailer looking out
over the water, about 10-15ft out on the right of the ramp, there are
some big rocks sitting there under the water. So the trick is to
stay left untill you get by them. The water is pretty clear and
    I'm sure you'll notice them.

Money will collected the morning of the tourney and a draw will
be held for starting positions. As of now, and based on the enteries
we will be paying out the top FIVE places. Something on the order
of 40% for first, 30 for second, then 15, 10 & 5% for fifth. The
lunker pool is usually a winner take all, but with this many in
the field, I think that it maybe a 75% for the top dog and 25% for
    the runner up. Comments welcome.....

    Hi all,

I'm thinking about heading down to Singletary tommorrow to prepare
for this most prestigious DEC tourney. I'm looking for any information
that I should be aware of in terms of Navigational hazards. I
have never been on the lake before and therefore would like to know
if there are any particularly hazardous sections that are not readily
apparent. I'll keep my eyes open for the rocks near the Boat Ramp.

    Any help will be appreciated.

P.S. Anyone in the area that's interested, there will be plenty

Eh Yo Buschmaster...I am not the most knowledgable on that lake
but there is a couple of "humps" along the east side of the
lake that depending on the water level may present some problems.
Keep an eye on the water depth as you work that shore.

There is only one other place on the lake to watch out for. It is
at the south end of the lake. There is one huge rock that sticks
way out of the water. There are other rocks below the water in that
area. Outside the rest of the lake is fine. NO rock piles or bars
that would cause any trouble. It is a deep lake also and that is
why there are a lot of trout fishermen on the lake. You'll see them
    trolling around.

    Tight lines, Ranger Ron

ps. I still am not sure about the lunker pool. If everyone that
is signed up for the tourney gets in it will be over $200 dollars.
That is alot of cash and the one thing I always worry about is making
this thing a money event instead of a FUN event. Usually the lunker
winner is also the tourney winner and that means he or she would
take in over $300. I don't know...what do the rest of you say?????

1003.151Directions addition to SingletaryLUDWIG::MATTSONFri Apr 14 1989 20:0323
    Gang,

When I first published directions to Singletary I noticed an
ERROR. When coming down 146 from the Worcester way(I believe thats
South)you get off of the West Main Street exit in Millbury. But
when you get to the end of the exit ramp and go right, you need to
cross over a street and 15 feet past that is West Main Street,
the one you want to be on.
There's a Y in the road right at the end of this exit ramp and
that's where Elm Street and West Main intersect. Again the very
1st right would be Elm Street(THE WRONG ROAD)cross over 15ft then
go right and your on West Main and the rest of the directions are
    fine.
Coming from the Sutton direction(North) you'll go left still
at the end of that ramp and your directly on West Main going in
the right direction. Again either way the Royal House of Pizza where
your next turn is is only a mile away from the exit ramps for RT
    146. So if you do go in the wrong direction after a mile and don't
see it,then my directions screwed you up. Ask anyone you see in
Town and I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction.

1003.155LUNKER is lunker, lower the pool if the money is the r problemHPSCAD::BPUISHYSBob PuishysSun Apr 16 1989 17:1211
Hey Ron and folks I have just a couple points. 1) a Big fish pool,
is just that. It is for the person or team who caughts the biggest
fish. We are not there for trash fish just BASS. It has always
    been winner take all.

    2) If you folks are worried about one team or person winning and
caughting big fish, Yes it can happen, but Singltary will be no
Momonac.. If the money is the problem, make it $1.00 a person for
lunker and leave it winner take all. There is no second or third
    LUNKER is LUNKER!!!

1003.156VAX4::TOMASJoeMon Apr 17 1989 12:1426
Although I'm not coming down to fish this tourney, I have to agree with BB.
A "LUNKER POOL" is intended to reward the ONE person (or team) that manages
to land the largest bass. I agree that often the winning person/team
usually also catches the largest bass, but then again, that's not always the
case. You've already decided that, due to the large turnout, rewards will
go to the top 5 places which will help to lower the individual payoffs.
This, by the way, also provides more incentive for more folks to enter as
their chances of winning something is greater.

I agree that the primary purpose for these events is to get together once in
a while and have FUN ... and NOT to be big money-making propositions. But
there's also no reason why a little $$$ at the end of the line (pun) can't
contribute to the spirit of competition.

Now ... if this tourney is on Singletary and, as someone previously
mentioned, it also has smallmouth, then why not split the pool for the
largest largemouth and smallmouth. For example, a 60/40 split with 60%
going to the larger of the two fish. If the smallie is bigger than the
largemouth, it takes the 60% cut. If only one legal-sized smallie is
registered ... all the more power to that lucky soul! If no smallie is
caught, then 100% payoff goes to the hawg-catcher!

Just my 2 cents worth...

-HSJ- (who's thinking 'bout starting up a NH tourney for June)

1003.158TOURNY UPDATE 4/18 OVER 25 ENTRIESLUDWIG::MATTSONTue Apr 18 1989 12:1049
Well Fisher folks looks like we've broken the 25 entry
mark. This is going to be a good size tournament, maybe we can get ESPN to
come in. On the serious note,Singletary's ramp isn't built to get more than
1 boat at a time in and out. We need to start thinking how long we want the
tourney to run and keep in mind the time for getting boats in and out, weigh
in,ect, ect. On suggestion I have is start as early as possible to get the
most amount of time in for Fishing. Or maybe we should just make this a 6
hour tournament. Just some thoughts. We've got plenty of time to work this
out. I'd rather have these type of problems than worrying about if enough are
going to show up.
As a side note,to keep everthing friendly I vote to have more than
one pay off for the Lunker pool. Also for folks who have never been to
Singletary before, see my note before this update about a oversight in
directions to it.

I have a few points on this start stuff.
    1) the ramp as mention at this place is small. Ron and I have
organized a few of these in the past, and 25 boats is not a problem
    if the following is done.
Every one should plan on being there and ready by 6:30 am..
That does not mean showing up at 6:30, that means getting you boat
in the water and trailer parked.

Try to get there early but don't run you motors too long. Gets
the locals upset. If all the ramp parking is gone. Park on the road
or in the field below the fire station.
!!!!!!!!DO NOT PARK ON THE SIDEWALK!!!!!!!

2)Do the same when you get your boats out. Once you are out of
the water get out of the way to clean up. PARK IT SOMEWHERE!.

This should keep thing fast and clean. Don't be afraid to ask someone
for help. Most of the people going will help. (except don't let
TBDW back up your trailer!! We saw all his trailer activites at
    Manchuag a few years ago!!!!!)

    Hi all,

I spent two days out at Lake Singletary this weekend, and had less
    than optimum results.

On Saturday, Tim Lucia and I headed out in what seemed to be gale
force winds to attempt to entice a couple of bass into the boat.
After 45 minutes of fishing/exploring Tim hooked into a nice stocked
rainbow. It was quite the surprise, since he was fishing for bass
with a 4.5" floating rapala. I was tossing a white "Vibrashaft"
spinnerbait (my new-found personal favorite spinnerbait) and about
a half hour later I hooked and landed a nice largemouth, 16.5" and
I guess a couple of pounds. The rest of the day was spent fighting
the waves, wind, and rain, with no other stikes. There was a tournament
on the lake on Saturday, one of the local B.A.S.S. chapters, so
consequently the lake was pretty crowded.

I also headed down there yesterday with my brother. Unlike Saturday,
Monday was gorgeous. The sun shined all day with light to moderate
winds. The fish, however, were apparently on vacation. I spent
6+ hours throw everything I had (Spinnerbait, crankbaits, Jig-n-Pig,
Gitzits etc etc) around every type of structure I could find (Docks,
boulders, dropoffs fallen trees, in all depths) and never even raised
an eyebrow (do fish have eyebrows ???). Well at least I did catch
a few rays any ways and it was a nice day out. FWIW I talked to
several bass boats on Monday and only one boats had caught anything
(two small smallmouth). I also talked to one of the guys who fished
the club tourney on Saturday, and he said the winning team only
had 4 fish, but two of them were 3+ lbs.

I do have one question though (Gitzit are you listening). I decided
to try Gitzit Jigs for the first time (yeah I know I'm WAY behind
the times) around the rocky dropoffs that are so common around the
lake. I had a LOT of trouble getting hooked into the rocks etc.
I rigged it with a standard lead head with the hook exposed and
the jig head exposed as well. It seemed that if I let the jig hit
the bottom, the head would get caught (I don't think the hook is
getting caught because I have pulled hooks straight to get them
off other rocks). Any suggestions on rigging and techniques would
be appreciated, I lost 5 jigs/gitzits combination in a very short
    period of time.

    Sorry for being long-winded.....

    	Gus

Gus,

If your problem is getting hung up in the rocks on the bottom, try this.
Rig the gitzit with a 2/0 hook hooked Texas-style with a small 1/8 oz. worm
weight pegged about 12-18" about (Carolina-style). This set-up should allow
the gitzit to trail behind and above the weight off the bottom. If you're
still getting snagged, try inserting a small piece of styrofoam into the
gitzit body to add more bouyancy. When you feel the weight hit bottom, just
keep it moving lightly so that the weight doesn't fall between the rocks and
become snagged.

Also, because the water is still cold and the bass are lethargic, you might
give the "dead-Worming" technique a try. I had suggested this to someone
last fall (I can't remember who) and the technique paid off for them.

1003.163Determined to save face .....CECV03::SURRETTETue Apr 18 1989 20:0640

Thanks Holeshot, I'll certainly give both those methods a try.

The water at Singletary felt very cold still (I didn't have a
thermometer, but did slip off my trailer while launching ...
boy were my feet cold !!). Hopefully a month's worth of warm
weather will get them Bass to move.

A couple of comments about Singletary....

    - Very nice lake, although unlike many lakes I've fished before.
The structure of the lake is better hidden, i.e. lots of submerged
drop offs and boulders etc. The people who have lots of smallmouth
experience (I have none!!) should do very well.
    - Visible structure includes numerous docks and boulders near the
shoreline, and a couple of half submerged trees. I would imagine
as the water warms, some extensive weedbeds will form in the
shallower sections of the lake. I think the water was too cold
for the bass to be in the shallows, even though the sun was warm
      all day.
    - The water is stained, but not overly murky. Visibility was probably
about 6-8 feet in places. This may have been due to the high
amount of rain lately and how rough the water was on Saturday.
    - I'm amazed at the amount of fishing pressure that Singletary
receives. Saturday there was a tournament as well as numerous
other people. Monday had just as many people with probably a
dozen bass boats and a dozen pleasure/ trolling-for-trout boats.
By talking to a lot of the people on the lake, I guess a tournament
every other week is about average. Good thing MOST of the people
practice catch and release for bass anyhow.

I guess that's enough for now....

Thanks again Joe, will report on the results, as I plan to prefish
at least a couple more times (I REFUSE to get skunked this tourney,
I don't care if I win..... just as long as I have something other
than sorrow to weigh in :-) :-) )

1003.164Yo Gus way to Go.DEMING::MATTSONThu Apr 20 1989 11:4621
    Gus,
I was out on Singletary Saturday also and had the same luck
as Tim. My partner John and myself got there around 7:00am,I don't
think the mecury was above 35 degrees yet. We decided all the Bass
would do is laugh at us trying to catch them this cold. We trolled
for Trout for a couple of hours and didn't get a thing. We then
decided to try going for Bass in a few of the coves, hoping the water
was a little warmer there. About 1/2 hour into it I hooked into
something. It wasn't a Bass but a 14" Brown Trout.
I caught him on a medium depth crank bait in a rocky section.
We caught a small Yellow perch and that was it for the day. We got
in before the Rain came down. I'll give you credit of you stayed
out on the Lake with the wind and the rain, you deserve to catch
    Bass then.
Your the second person I talked to that has caught a Bass this
early using a spinner bait. I always though the Bass were to sluggish
to go after them with the water still this cold. I think this weekend
I'll give a couple of my lighter colored ones a try. Knowing my
luck I'll probobly catch a Horned Pout on them.

1003.165So much for the experts....CECV03::SURRETTEThu Apr 20 1989 16:3526
Gary, congrats on the brown trout !

I must confess however, that the reason I used a Spinnerbait on
that day was that I was too lazy to try something else that required
more work to fish !! My main objective for Saturday was to get
a good look at the lake and try to find some potential hot spots
("hot" being a figure of speech, of course....). I was fishing
the spinnerbait about as slow as I could without leaving it on the
bottom. I did throw a Jig-n-Pig as well, but had no luck there.

Interestingly though, the next day (Sunday) the Boston Herald started
up their weekly column "BASS BETS" for the season. And guess what,
Lake Singletary was the Featured local lake of week. The guy who
wrote the article recommended White single blade spinnerbaits and
Jig-n-pigs in black and brown. Sooooo with this information in
hand and a rough sketch of the lake with the Author's "Hot spots"
clearly labeled, I was ready to get a bunch of both smallies and
largemouths. The author also stated, "It's almost impossible to
get skunked at Singletary, with the large bass populations there,
even on a bad day you can still catch at least on decent fish"
Boy did I ever prove him wrong !! I'll keep trying though....

    See ya

Buschmaster, glad to see you out there tossing the 'ol namesake.
I do not rig mine Texas style, ie...I leave the hook exposed. I
compensate for that with a continuous retrival...slow but not letting
the gitzit settle too much. Needless to say that I have some hook
ups anyway. I was running gitzits last Monday through the rocks
at the Molesta's "personal lake" and had good success with them.

There will, I assume, be others in the notes that can tell you how
to rig them so the hook is not exposed.

Gang,
After reading Gus's comments about the tournament at Singletary, and
hearing myself from someone that Singletary has a tournament every weekend
right through the Summer. I think we have a problem here or maybe we don't?
Don't most tournaments run on Saturday? If that's the case, with todays update
we're up to 27 teams of our own. Add that in with another group of 20 teams on
the same day. What a MESS. This is going to make fishing real tight and in my
opinion takes alot of the Fun OUT OF IT. I don't know what the answer is or if
this is really a legit concern. What do you all think? One thought I have is do
this on Sunday instead of Saturday.

    DON'T MOVE IT TO SUNDAY!!!!!!

about 95% of all the B.A.S.S. Federation clubs have their tournaments
on Sundays. Very few have them on saturday. Lots of clubs have
memebers who work on saturday. All the state level events are
also on sunday so most of the clubs use sunday aswell.

We will most likly have more trout fisher persons and people out
just to fish on saturday, but should not have a club tournament.

I think he is giving you some &**&* the old timers get all bent
out of shape bucause they can't park to fish for trout. But if
you read the state ramp laws the ramps are for boat launches ONLY...
not for fishing or swimming from shore. Those shore people park
so you can't back your boat out of a parking spot, or they park
in the area you are suppose to use to line up with the ramp.

1003.174Parking doesn't need a special PermitLUDWIG::MATTSONMon Apr 24 1989 14:5922
    Bob,
It looks fine if you haven't seen on your schedule a major
tournament the day of ours. I was there this Saturday(What a Fool
I was for that,I especialy liked how the white snow clashed with
my Red carpet)there was a Club tournament going on but they maybe
had 8 boats out. They were a small mouth club??????
What I was worried about was a major tournament conflicting with
ours. This doesn't look like the case, which is good. I still vote
to start this thing as early as possible though.
As far as the ramp goes,Bob is right. This old timer is giving
you a line. You don't need any special permit to park there. I've
also had run in's with cars parked in the line up area for the ramp.
I've calmly asked the person to move their car and they did without
any incident(As my fingers slowly lowered the hammer back on the
double barreled 12 Gauge, just kidding). I think most people are
ignorant to the fact that that's why that area is marked off for
no parking,so trailers can back up. Sometimes you got to educate
    them.

Allright fellows, lets get his thing straightened out.....there
is no other tourney on that lake on that date that anyone can find
out about.....so that should not be a problem. The trout fishermen
will be there, but it will be a little late in their trolling season
so we shouldn't have any problem with them either. The last thing
is the time we start......7:00AM is the offical starting time. The
sun will just be up and we won't run into anything (especially each
other). We end at 3:00PM. That is the time that everyone has to
be back at the ramp for the weigh-in. You do not have to have your
boat out of the water, but you must be there.

Yes, with all the people signed up for this tourney....more than
any other one we have ever had, the ramp there will cause us a little
problem. Solution.....get there early!!!!!!! and be prepared to
leave a little later than normal. I suggest that you try to be there
by about 6:00AM. That should give us plenty of time to get everyone
into the water with no strain on the resources. There is NOT enough
room at the ramp for 27 boats to dock, so be prepared to have to
park your boat out and around the cove that the ramp is in (and
watch out for the rocks there).

I will admit that with this type of turn out we are going to tax
the ramp and the lake....I had no idea there would be so many :^)
but its great...really great. If we get many more people in this
we may well have to think of moving the event to another lake that
is more suited for this many boats......lets wait and see!!!!!!!

    re: some earlier notes.
There are no weeds at Singletary except in the most southern pool
and across from the ramp. The rest of the lake is basically rock!!
Two areas to watch are in the most easterly cove on the south shore
and off the point of the ramp cove. Everything else can be seen
before it gets hit......Most of the time ;^)

This lake was picked to solve the federation problem. Thats

or 54 people. We have lots of lakes to pick from but are trying
to keep it close. Ron as tournament chairman will post something
    soon.

Just to answer some of the questions, Parking is not to much of
the problem, 27 boats is.. Starting earlier than 7:00 is a big
problem on that lake with the local people. There has been problems
in the past with the motor noise, and locals going after the fisherman.

Some people also mentioned Canoes and the wind on that lake. This
is all being looked at. I just hope that if ron changes the sight

Seems as though there are a lot of potential problems (locals going
after the fishermen , lack of space , etc .
The wide open spaces of Maine are still available , we don't have
an overcrowding problem up here and we have plenty of very good
lakes for the picking . Even the motels are not crowded early on
in the season as they will be later in the summer . May 20 or 21
would still allow plenty of time to arrange a nice trip north .
    Think about it .

Folks, let me try this again....(thanks Al, maybe someother time)
Our problem here is not the lake or the starting time. The lake
could hold 60 boats if needed and you might not see each other all
day.....the time is dictated by "normal" practices when fishing
on a 'lived on' lake. Most all the houses on the lake are year around
residences. People don't like being blown out of their beds on a
Sat morning.....so, no matter where, we will start the tourney at
    7:00AM.

Now let me restate the only problem we have.......PARKING for all
the guys who have entered this gala......the ramp can hold 12 boats
and cars.....the street can hold another 12 or so and there is some
room down the way near the old pump house, maybe 200-300 yards away.
NOW.......if nobody mines this and the fact that we can only get
one boat in/out at a time, we will stay at Singletary. If of the
28 entries we have alot of you do mind, then we will move the tourney
to Manchug where we don't have any of these problems and the lake
does not have year around houses (well maybe three). To settle this,
Bassin Bob has volunteered his workstation again to give us a chance
to express our opinion.......move or don't move, that is the question.

DO NOT ENTER YOUR REPLY IN THIS NOTE........PLEASE!!!!!!!!

the results then so anyone that wants to prefish will know where
    we are going to fish......

Before anyone gets upset......I don't like this anymore than you
do.....we are doing our best to try and come up with an answer to
a question we have never had before.....this is the biggest DEC
Bassmasters Classic we have had to date.....personally I think its
great that we have so many great fisherpersons around, but that
fact has caused this problem. Our last one had 10 or 12 entries.
so, lets make the best of it and please get to Bob with your reply.
And please, only those that know that they are going to be there!!!!

Thanks for your patience in this.

I don't think that all 27 of the boats being brought to this
tournament will be "bass extravaganzas". There will be a good number
pulled off the top of cars or dropped out the back of pick-up trucks.

Bottom line here is that true to Digital style we are working an
issue that probably isn't one. And if we don't get going at 7:00
am....so what? I am entering this because this is a good bunch

Gang,
Well it looks like we're starting to level out. This is the first week
that I haven't had any additional entries. The weather is starting to warm up
and hopefully the Bass are becoming a little more active. We should know later
on today if our traveling Fishing show is moving again or staying put.

Of the 28 teams signed up we had reponses from 22 (not bad). The
result (and I am sorry it didn't get in last friday) is that we
move the to Manchug to avoid the hassle of launching and parking.
Everything else stays the same (starting time etc.)

So the people have spoken...sorry about this whole thing, but we
now look to have 29 teams in this and the list may still grow. I
have to say that it seems to be the best idea (and I didn't vote,

    re directions

I am sure Ron will add some directions but here are a few fast ones.

If you are coming from the 295 - 395 (old rt 52) you would want
to take exit 4E off of 395, thats sutton ave Sutton. About 5 miles
or so you would go by Singltary Rod and Gun Club, you will go over
a little hill SLOW DOWN watch out for cop. You past Spains country
store and a white church on your right. about 1000 yards on your
right There are signs for camp grounds and such take that rt. Manchug
Rd. about 2 miles you will see the lake on your right (after one
pond and two campgrounds) The road goes around the lake, You will
pass a YMCA camp and will nolonger see the lake. You go down a
steap hill. At the bottom of the hill The ramp will be on your right.

If you miss it you come to the dam and lake again on your rt. Turn
around and go back it will be the first left after you turn around.
I don't know if there is a sign or not.

The lake has all kinds of ROCKS like singltary so use caution near
shore (don't go buzzing between Island and shore) after you launch
you are in a cove Go to your right to head out into the Big lake.
About 1000 yards or so Almost out of the cove is an old dam under
the water. Right in the middle is an opening IT IS ONLY MARKED
RIGHT NOW WITH TWO SODA BOTTLES. at this time. WATCH OUT GO SLOW.
After the dam you can open it up. Just to the rt and left of the
dam there are lots of rocks so go straight.

If you Know where the ramp is on singltary keep going past the ramp
and around the lake until the roads ends.(10mins heading away from millbury)
Take a left then first right that is MAnchuag RD follow directiosn
    above.

C'mon now...You work for digital, and "change" has gotten you upset?

Just because someone has an "advantage"...(Which IMO is trivial)
shouldn't scare you away from fishing this tourney. Maybe Bob has a lot
of fishing time/experience on Manchaug, and probably alot of other lakes
in the region, and he should...being somewhat of a professional
    fisherman...

I welcome the opportunity to fish with better fisherman than
    myself...it's a good confidence builder,and I keep in mind,
knowing someday I will be just as good,if not better. I have confidence
in myself, and in what I throw every cast...and just those two things will
make you better each time you go...

Can't wait for the 20th .... as for the lunker pool 100%, or

Ray I may have some more time on this lake , But it does not mean
much. I have been skunked 2 out four tournaments on this lake.
When you fish your home lake, it is for fun. When the weather is
bad you don't fish, when they are not hitting you go in and hit
the case of beer or something. I am still learning this lake.

There are also People fishing this like les and others who will
be fishing this this weekend, they have a better chance then me.
I have an important state one the day after and it will get most
if not of my pratice time.

I hope you don't think I forced this move. I will fish any lake.
This move was brought on because of all the notes about the ramp
and such. Note Ron and I keep saying no problem and every one
else said big problem. I hope you Still fish this.

The main idea is to get out and put faces with the names. I have
to admit that will be easier at manchug ramp witht he room.

I too support Ray Tadry on this issue and will probobly boycott
the Manchug tournament. I feel it's good that Ron took the initiative
and took a majority vote and went with that. But there are certain
principles involved here that have pissed me off.
Originally the tournament was planned at Quinsig. This would
have handled everything fine. But do to a conflict with Mass Bass
members it couldn't be fished by them due to a tournament on the
Lake the next Day,so we're told. Apon further investigation it was
found that it was only off limits to Mass Bass MEMEBERS that have
entered that tournament, other Mass Bass members that didn't enter
that Sunday tournament could still fish it. So this only effected
2 people out of all of us to my knowledge. Bob Pushiys was one of
those and the other doesn't matter.
Now all of a sudden we,re going to change,we make some suggestions
and pick a spot. Now Bob comes out of the woodwork and he's running
the tourny with Ron. A couple of folks volunteered including myself
to help Ron earlier. But Bob says him and Ron will run the tourny
    for old time sake.
Now we get into the Lunker pool issue,Bob say's Lunker is Lunker.
I raise a question about the size of our entries and conflicts with
another tourny. Turns out there is no other tourny so it's a mute
    issue.
Now we have a vote to change the tourny location,Manchug is
the choice. Or let me say Manchug was the given choice over Singletary.
Why was this place picked? I now fined out that this is Bob's home
    turf.
I don't know Bob personaly and he's probobly a heck of a guy.
But the writting is on the wall for me. I feel Bob has pushed his
views on everybody and everything being done is for his benefit.
I don't support something like this, and it takes all the FUN out
of it. I do believe that majority should rule and you either go
along with that or you don't play the game. Looks like I'll be watching
this one from the side. Ray I'll see you there, the worst I can do
    now is come in second.
Ron and Bob I'll still keep the roster updated for you. Good
    luck to everyone fishing.

What happened to the the fun in fishing? You guys make this sound
like a buisness rather then a sport. When I go fishing it is to
have fun rather then b*tch and moan about the experience. Who
really cares where the tournament is held provided you all have
a good time. You make this sound like a conspiracy to take all
your money. I don't think Bob could care where it is held.

    re .206!

Your dead wrong about the part when you stated 'only mass bass members
    fishing that tourney on Quinsig.

    This is the deal.

If you belong to a B.A.S.S. Chapter Fed. Club. you can not fish any
lake that is having a Federation Tourney on it,other than the
designated pre-fish time. This goes for ALL members whether you fish
the Fed. Trail or not. If you belong to a club, you must abide by it's
    guidelines at all times. Period.
1003.211Prize Breakout.....FOOZLE::SCHOLZRon....and thanks for all the fishTue May 02 1989 16:4143
My goodness.....to anyone that has become upset by the way this
tourney has come together.....my humblest apoligies.

Now to the way it is....for those coming in to the area from the
north east or east.....Rt 146 is a good way to get down to the lake.
Take it south to the Manchug Whitinsville exit and follow the sign
to Manchug. That would be west (or right). Follow this road all
the way though the center of Manchug (all four buildings;^) with
its flashing light and keep on going till you come to a fork in
the road. Bare left to the end and you are at the lake and damn.
Take a right and first left into the ramp. The sign at the ramp
is way back off the road and you can't see it unless you are right
in front of it. Just keep your eyes pealed and go slow. As you come
into the ramp/parking area bare to the right and stage for the ramp
at the lower right hand side of the parking area.

    Now the $$$$$$
We have somewhere around 27-30 entries. Lets say we have 25 show
up. At $10 per man ($20/team) that is $500. LOTS OF CASH HERE.
The prize fund would break out this way.....
    			1st.......$175 (35%)
    			2nd.......$125 (25%)
    			3rd....... $90 (18%)
    			4th....... $65 (13%)
    			5th....... $45 (9%)
    				_______ _______
    				  $500 (100%)

The lunker pool will break out this way...

Same 25 teams as above..... "$5 per TEAM", gives us $125.
That is to much to pay for one fish so we break it down this way.
60% for the largest Largemouth and 40% for the largest smallmouth
OR (if no one catches a smally) the second biggest largemouth. Now
since this is a team event.....one team could take both prizes...

    More to follow.....

    re 206

WOW Hay Gary if that is how you feel fine. But you are not going
to say things like that in this file and get a way without an answer.

    1) Quinsig NO BASS FEDERATION MEMBER COULD FISH THIS LAKE.
That leaves out more than just me.

    2) Running this tournament. Ron was the original starter. You
and others have been involved. I just gave some time and resources,
like my cpu for mail. The only reason I even got invloved in running
this was for the scale. (Not to mention the 4 or 5 other
tournaments that I ran for this file already)

    3) Lunker What I said about lunker is my opinion not the rules.
I gave past history and what other tournaments do but I have NEVER
said this is the way this tournament is going to run.

    4) The lake issue, So Manchug is my home lake BIG DEAL, Like
I said before many times I will fish this no matter where this
tournament is. The only reason this was moved from singltary was
the ramp. The goal in the lake selection was to keep it close to
the original spot ie worcester, Manchuag was suggested becasue
it is ten minutes from singltary. Look through the notes
I keep saying that just get there early. If you are so worried
move it MONOMNAC so NH guys can fish. The only reason we did not
have it there is because all you HOT SHOTS would not go!

    5) Money This sounds like it all comes down to the dam money again,
like RON said there is a lot. I have said it more than once, that
95% of all the poeple would fish this for the hell of it, Well I
am one of the 95% who would fish this even if there was no money.

I am sorry you feel that I am shoving this stuff at you. If you
feel that way then fine DON'T FISH but don't make me your escape
goat for not attending this event.

I would like to applogize to all who read this but It's different
when we give each other a slap for fun, but all dec can read this
It makes me look like the ass in all of this.

Hay gary read all 202 notes before you answer this and If you still
    feel this way I sorry...

OK, we'll settle this. To put the fun back in this tournament,
you can collect the entry fee, lunker pool fee, and then split the
total with COONASS Bob, Myself, and the other people who can't make
the tournament because we are too far away. I'm sure that we can
collect enough pictures of LUNKERS to take the lunker pool, also. (I'm
sure of that if you would include the Salmon from Washington.)

I wish I could make it. It wouldn't matter where I fished.
Even with a bunch of knowledge, on any given day, any angler can
beat anyone else. In fact, I'll probably think of you guys out
there jerking bass around on that day while I'm lunker hunting for
big Northerns (but NOT FOR LONG). EASE UP!

If you take 146 out of worcester It is a lot faster if you get off
the Central Trpk exit which is right at Pleasent Valley golf course.

This is also called sutton ave bug the highway sign calls it central
Tnpk. Go Right at the end of ramp. You will come to a 4 corners
with the blue Jay (pub) on your left. Go straight about 1 mile
a park or some kind of field is on your left then you start to go
up a hill, take 2 left after park It's the one with all the signs
for the campgrounds. Then follow directions from Manchuag Rd from
    and earlier note.

    Bassin Bob,

This is my last reply to you on this matter, this isn't what
the Notes file is intended for. First Off I apoligize if I've made
you look bad. I have nothing against you personally. I merely stating
my Opinion which you and many people in Notes have done in the past.
I also don't want to hurt this tournament. Everybody see's things
differently. Maybe most of the folks reading this think I'm the
bigger Jerk. That's their opinion and They're entitled to it. I
just pointed out things the way I saw them. Looks like I could be
wrong on the Mass Bass Federation piece, live and learn. I still
contend that the deck is stacked in your favor. I've seen your name
listed in the Mass Bass Federation Guide as one of the best Fisherman
in your club. I also noticed that you placed in the the top 5 in
2 of the Total 5 tournament on the trail last year. Your a heck
of a Fisherman and I applaud your success. But my opinion is the
flys are now coming to the Spider's den.
Bob please don't take my attitude the wrong way I'm just standing
up for my right to express my thoughts on a matter the way I see
it. Not who you are but what you represent in my mind right now
is what I'm against. Sorry, hopefully someday we can meet on better
terms and have a couple of brews over all of this.

Just have to get in on this one....with no intentions to anyone.

I believe that Bassin' Bob was helping us out with our concerns
of ramp space and lake size. I stopped at his office several
times during the "voting sessions" and he would show me the
results and from our conversations...he DIDN'T care where the
    	tourney was.

As for Singletary...I am sure that out of the entries that lake
has to be "home" turf for somebody. I guess that bottom line
here is if I got too concerned with the advantages that others
have...would I be entering my 12 ft electric trolling motor
powered tub vs. the Rangers and other gonzo bass boats????

I know, I know....my advantage is gitzit mastery...-)-)-)

Ron...nice work...Bob and Gary thanks for the assist.

    	See you at Manchuag.....

From reading the roster you guys already decided who was going to
win this tourney? Well knowing about beginers luck and this being
my first tourney the odds are in my favor. As far as my experience,
I perfected my fishing ability on the only all American Nashua river
in Fitchburg, the only river to flow RED,WHITE and BLUE depending
on what color the paper was going to be that day. We used geiger
counters instead of fish finders and still managed to catch a few.
I see the competition is going to be tough but I think the list
should read the Frenchman and Mick Rogers took first place.

For those of you that are not all that familar with the lake, here
is some information about it. I extracted this from the original
First New England DEC Bassmasters Classic note (146)
    Hope this helps...........

Manchaug Pond is located in Sutton/Douglas with the ramp located
off Manchuag Road/Torrey Road (right where they meet). Manchuag
can be accessed very easily from hwy 146 and I would suggest most
use this as the main way to get there. The exit is plainly marked
and the road you exit on is Manchaug Road.

The lake is 360 acres with a max depth of 30 feet. Primarily a
weedless body of water, it has abundant rocks and this has to be
watched for. There are serveral weed areas scattered around the
lake that offer good largemouth habitat, but the drop offs and holes
offer most of the best fishing. It's a clear water lake with visability
    to about 10 feet.

The lake is well developed and shore fishing is limited to just
two main areas. Around the launch area and on the northern shore
    line along Manchaug Road.

It has all the usual fish, bass, both large and small, prickrel,
and assorted pan fish and perch.

All in all, a good lake that has to be fished well, but will produce
some nice size fish in the 2-4 lb range.

    Enjoy tightlines, Ranger Ron

Greetings to all HALIEUTIC persons. The big day is almost upon us.

Saturday May 20th will be the Fourth Mass DEC Bass Masters Tournament.
It will be held at Lake Manchuag in Sutton Mass. Launching from the state
ramp only!. OFF LIMITS TO ALL ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY before.

The entry fee is: $10.00/person , and a optional $5.00/boat lunker pool.
All entry money goes to payback

It will be an 8 hr. tournament.

We will start from the old damn, by the markers. Starting position
will be determined by draw and the last draw will be the "official"
starter. The intent here is give the smaller boats enough time to
clear the damn area before the next one goes off. Any kind of boat
is allowed, and you are responsible for your own safety. We won't
check for life vests, etc.. Insurance and such is the fishermans'
    responsibility.

All Non-powered boats do not draw. They will all start after all powered
boats leave. The NON-powered boats will be allow an extra 15 to come in.
They will weight in at 3:15 sharp. This is a friendly tournament so this
    15 min grace is granted.

THE RULES: as far as we see them now.

First Rule: Keep all the other rules simple. This is for fun not
    profit.

Second Rule: Remember First Rule at all times.

    NO TROLLING :^(

We will use standard mass fishing and boating rules.
Large or small mouth BASS only. The size requirement is 12in closed
mouth to closed tail. Meaning you can pinch the tail closed and
get about a 10th of an inch more.

This is a catch and release tournament.
We won't punish for dead fish, but all contestants must have some
form of live well. This can be a cooler which you change the water
in as needed, or any other form of "reasonable" container.
You have to release all live fish.

This is not a "sponsored" event, by DEC or any other agency. We are
    on our own.

Nets are allowed and you can use any bait on a rod EXCEPT live bait.
No hand lines and such. Rod and Reel only.
No LIVE BAIT or PREPARED BAITS ie smelts or frogs.. PORK IS ALLOWED ie
pork rims or pork worms or strips.
NO MORE THAN ONE ROD AT A TIME/person

First boat on a position has the right of way. If the boat is moving
in a direction you can't jump in front of it, but may go in behind
it. Distance of control is an "estimated" 100 yds in front and 50
yds behind. The idea is to not crowd other boats, like we do all
the time when we fish regularly. Remember that there will be other
non-tourney fisherman out there, so watch who you yell at. If you
want to come in and talk to your friends in other boats, stand off
    and ask first. BE POLITE.....

	- If boat A is anchored and boat A has trolling motor up, and he
notifies to boat B that he is anchored, boat b must give a 50 foot
distance when passing or approaching boat A.

	- No one is allowed to leave there boats during the Tournament to
go up on shore or into the water after a fish. You may leave the water
if it is witnessed by another boat. No boat is allowed to get
within reaching distance of each other and passing objects between
boats is disallowed. (bring your own beer)

If I think of anything else to add or any of you'al come up with
any suggestions to add....let me know. As of now this is the way
    it is.

    Tight lines, Ranger Ron

would care to bring his camera to the EVENT and snap some shots
of the winners and others in the group???????????????

We had pictures from our first Classic and everyone got a copy.
Mine is still hanging up here in my office. This is just a thought
to go along with the fun part of things......

We might even be able to find someone to write it all up for the
DTW and a picture or two to go with the article would be nice.....

    Any takers??????????????????????

We will start from the old <damn>, by the markers. Starting position
will be determined by draw and the last draw will be the "official"
starter. The intent here is give the smaller boats enough time to
clear the <damn> area before the next one goes off. Any kind of boat
is allowed, and you are responsible for your own safety. We won't
check for life vests, etc.. Insurance and such is the fishermans'
    responsibility.

    Gitzit,

That's the Spirit, that's why the Greek rated you in the money.
He told me with the sucess you had at Les's lake earlier, combined
with that Gitzit Mastery, and the unvailing of the new Secret
Experimental Super Bass Gitzit at the tournament,Hell I told him
    he rated you to low.
He told me that he rated Les #1 because he's slipperyer than
Fish Slime and always has an ACE up his sleve. He rated Bassin Bob
high because Bob's been fishing that area ever since he was a Minnow.
He rated Ranger Ron high because you can never count out the Head
Man AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE HIM FEEL GOOD SO HE'LL INVITE THE GREEK
BACK NEXT TOURNY. He said with a name like Bassmaster Dave, and fishing
with his wife, heck this guy has to know what he's doing.
I don't know though, ever since the Greek got kicked off of NBC
he hasn't been playing with all his Bass in the live well. I heard
that at different Tourny he once mistaked a Northern Pike for a
Lake Trout. We'll have to wait and see if he sticks to his early
predictions or changes them be for Tourny day. I'll keep you all
    posted.

I fished our clubs tournament in Manchaugg this weekend.
We got blown all over he lake. I have never been on any small
lake that was that rough. 2 foot swells, 40MPH winds, and not many
BASS. A boat even flipped over in the afternoon. Some guy in
a rocket sled doing about 50MPH, Nobody hurt just some soiled pants.

Any ways only six bass were caught with the biggest being 2-10,
I caught that one. I didnt see any in the shallows yet but the
wind may of had something to do with that. Boy I tell you this
lake is ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS. Any one fishing exposed hooks like gitzits
or grubs bring a bunch of spares, I must of lost 25 and my partner
    out did me.

I fished our club tourney Saturday at Long Pond in Lakeville. I think
rough water in this area was re-defined. I only managed 1 fish, but,
the one fish meant alot. (It was enough to finish ahead of Greska)
Will that change th Greeks odd's?? Also my wife is a member of the
Green Water Wizards ( did I forget to tell you that)? She fishes all
the club events with me. ( Does this change the odds even more).

I welcome the chance to fish with all of you wherever. The way I look
at it, no-matter what lake you pick it's somebody's home lake. Believe
it or not I've never fished manchaug. I'll be down there alot over the
next few weeks. If any of you see the "Blue Shamrock' flying by,
    stop by and say HI!!

This past weekend was a nightmare....wind,and wave's on the Charles
River, for our club tourney, made fishing slow, and hard....I lost track
of how many times we crashed the shore.

The fish were up very tight on N/W bank.(we put in,in Waltham above the
waterfall). Chart/White spinner baits, tandem with a #6 Colo. blade was
all myself, and the guy I fished with used.....it worked. He took second, and
I took third. Not alot of fish were caught,we had two each.

Man, I hope the weather cooperates with us....this rain is getting
me down and down and down.....by the way....all the lakes are up
to the flooding stage and the rocks and other stuff that you might
have to worry about are getting pretty deep. That doesn't mean that
they still can't ding your prop, it just makes it harder to see
them......so a word of caution is inserted here......

    Bob, and others,

Here is the breakdown on the prizes for the event Sat. based on
$10 per person for entry and $5 per team for the lunker pool.

    			1st.......35%
    			2nd.......25%
    			3rd.......18%
    			4th.......13%
    			5th.......9%
				_______
    				  100%

The lunker pool will break out this way...

60% for the largest Largemouth and 40% for the largest smallmouth
OR (if no one catches a smally) the second biggest largemouth. Now
since this is a team event.....one team could take both prizes...

I got a question about the breakout on the Hawg Pool. Good question
too. What if the Smallmouth is larger than the Largemouth???? How
do we pay it out then?

Look at it this way. You are paying in $3.00 to the largemouth pool
and $2.00 into the smallmouth pool. If no one catches a smallmouth
the second largest largemouth will take second. If no one catches
a largemouth, the second largest smallmouth will take it. IF NO
ONE CATCHES ANYTHING.........I will take the money.....:^)))))))
No....the money all goes back....just in case.

    Clear????

you have too weigh everones big largmouth and big smallmouth then
the second biggest largemouth... It was bad enough when you had

    Keg,
Don"t worry about losing tacke to the Pike. Just use a 12"
length of 30# camo braided steel as tippet material. If you want,
I will send you details on how to tie my WEEDLESS splice knot for
the steel. Never lost a lure to one of those toothy critters due

1003.274A safety RecomendationCIMNET::DSULLIVANTue May 16 1989 17:3511

I won't tell you all how we slaughtered the fish last Saturday at
Manchaug. But, I would, for safety sake, like to make this recomendation.
I suggest the high speed bass boats stay no-wake till they go through
the 2 buoys into the main lake.
I would like to see a safe start. If you let us rev-up before the
channel markers we could have the risk of an accident. Let's make
this fun, safe and enjoyable for all.

Well, It looks as though all you guy don't have to worry about
me stealing your money, I was at Manchaug Saturday AND Sunday for
7+ hours each day, and the the total weight for BOTH days would
not have beat Mr "Blue Shamrock" Sullivan. I threw everything
I could think of at the water and came up with only one definite
keeper and a couple of close-to-the-limit bass, and a bunch of shorts.
I was so frustrated I wanted to pull the plug on the Boat and just
let her sink... tackle and all. It just goes to show how more
    there is to learn.....

1003.280Starting Position.....FOOZLE::SCHOLZRon....and thanks for all the fishWed May 17 1989 15:4921
    Dave,

Bob was right....in the rules I said that we would start this thing
from the marker bouys at the dam. We will pick for starting positions
and then go out to the dam sight. Canoes and other small boats that
don't want to pick for starting position will wait inside the dam
sight while the others take off. They get an extra 15 minutes to
get back. Those that pick will go to the outside of the dam bouys
and take off from there. The last to leave (ie #25 or so) will be
the starter and call off the numbers every 15 seconds or so.

Everyone just be careful and considerate and we won't have any
    problems.

Latest weather report puts the temps into the 70's and clear skies.
That will make the fishing VERY interesting..........bright skies,
spawning and prespawing fish make for a hard fishing day.....

    Jeff,

    Here's how I found it.

Rt 20 west to Rt 146 south. It's a right of rt 20 after you go over
    Rt 146, It's a tricky 270 degree exit/ entrance ramp, espically
with a big boat and oncoming two way traffic. If you see the Milbury
amusement center you went to far, pull in and go back fity yards
and take the right onto rt 146 south.

Once on rt 146 south, strait at the first light, past Milbury center
exit, drive a bit, strait at the sutton center light, then right
off Rt 146 at the Northwest cutoff exit about 100 yards after the
last light. Right off the ramp, drive a couple of miles (strait
thru a stop sign and a yellow blinking light) til you
come down a hill and there is an opening in the woods and a big
blue restraunt building on the left, stop at the stop sign and turn
left. Note pull out so you can see the cars speeding thru before
    you attempt to turn left.

head down this road til you come down a hill and see Manchaug center
then turh right at the blinking yellow light before the center.
Up this street til you see a sign for King's Campground and bear
left 100 yards to the end of the street and turn right. The entrance
to the ramp is up about twenty yards on the left.

I can meet you at the General Store if you want.. Drop me a line.

    Johnny Roach

at the bottom and turn right at the blinking yellow light
1003.289here goes.. from 395HPSCAD::BPUISHYSBob PuishysThu May 18 1989 18:5312
from rt 395 take exit 4E sutton ave sutton. The ramp puts you in
the right direction. About 5 miles or so you will pass singltary
rod and gun club then go down a hill pass SPAINS COUNTRY STORE then
it will be the second right with all the campground signs. The
ramp is on that road. Go all the way around the lake the ramp will
be on you right, down the hill after theYMCA Camp. (you can not
see the lake from the road.) If you come to the dam you just missed
the ramp. Turn around and it will be the first left after the dam.

Boyyyyyy thats a mouth full!!! Bassin Bob

    Gang,

Well I just talked to the Greek again today and he's staying
with his picks. He told me the water is still too cold and a lot
of folks are going to get skunked. The warming trend might help
out but he figuires 2 keepers will place in the money and 3 keepers
will probobly take it. There's a full moon coming that night but
the Fish can't read the Luner tables anyhow. That's why the front
runners aren't changing. His final statement was"Those in the Know
    will take the Dough".
Hey Ron what time we supposed to be there by? I'll be out there
tonight checking on you, checking on everyone else. Where'd I get
that bush in my boat you ask,Gee it was somewhere in the water out
there. Whad ya mean I pissed off Les's and Bob's pet Basses, hey
the bush was in my way and I didn't want some poor soul to hit it.
BOY you guys can't take a joke. So that's what the book means by
structure. And all this time I was looking for under water Skyscrapers.
That's what I thought Structure was called.
Sure am looking foward to Saturday and proving the Greek is
    really a Geek.

tournament are not as STUPID as you told me they were. You told everyone to
use a Jitterbug in 40', but we all know that the 16 oz Cod Jig at 35' is just
what you meant. You got to knock 'em on the head with the jig and snag 'em

    Gang,

    	We'll I got to meet a few folks,the day was nice,but unfortuately
I didn't have a day tournament dreams are made of. I'm sorry I missed
weigh in and couldn't meet more of you all. I didn't qualify for
    Rule 1 either.
A quick summary of how the day went. When we went to put the
boat in the water we noticed the motor came undone form the Transom
saver. Looks like the Tie down for it had the hook break loose on
the way to Manchug. We drew number 13 for the starting position.
We didn't get to the spot we wanted but fished another instead.
We had a boat that was on one side of us fish water we had just
gone by,and they hooked into a couple of nice Bass. Then we and
they kind of switched directions and they were on the other side
of us fishing water again we were just in, and they hooked into
    somemore keepers.
We figiured out what they were using and switched to it. We
got a lot of hits missed most, had a couple that came off real close
to the boat. We moved to another area and as I was casting my rod
broke at the handle. So I'm holding the handle in my hand and
the rest of the rod and reel is in the water. Fortunatley we were
shallow enough to retrieve it.( I'll never buy those Cheap rods to save
    money again)
Later we moved back to our original spot to try it again,no
luck. We went to fire up the engine to move and my partner said
the battery must be dead. The trolling motor was still functioning
and so where all the electronics. I told him to check the kill switch
and try again. He did and still nothing. Then we noticed this big
cloud of smoke coming from the rear storage compartment. The main
cabling coming from the battery up into the motor was on smoking. By
the time we got the wiring on done the fire went out by itself.
Because my partner got the Positive cable undone so fast we
saved the trolling motor wiring. We used this to bring it in.
Fortunately the battery didn't go into melt down with the wiring.
What A mess charcol broiled plastic melted wire all over the
place. We popped the cover off the motor and from what I can
surmise, the starting solinode or starting motor itself must have
    shorted to ground.
On a bright side you always here you got to pay your dues. If
that's the case I'm due for something big now I hope. What can happen
worse than this, the boat sink. Anyway the dealer is in the process
of working on it now. I'm kinda glad I bought a new boat and it's
under warraunty vrs a used you own it now boat.
IF LES WAS A NICE GUY HE'D GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK!!!!!!!! Just
kidding. I'm looking forward to the next DEC tourny and hanging
    around to meet folks.

1003.307another poem 'bout Saturday.STOWMA::LANGEToxic Waste PinataMon May 22 1989 15:1856
Saturday morning we were up at 4,
There wasn't a cloud in the sky
We wanted to hit the snooze once more,
But it was time to fish, for my partner, and I.

We tossed, and turned 'bout a quarter til 3
    Dreaming about catching a HAWG.
But it wasn't til after we drew boat number three
and with topwater,we started "Walkin the Dog"

    2 threw the spinner,and Rapala,
and one threw the Dying Flutter.
    With 3 fished missed,
We paniced 'bout no bread, and butter.

    By now it was 10
with no fish in the tub.
    Then we found the pattern,
And the Bass were hitting the Kalin Grub.

They were all in the shallows
    Protecting their Beds.
    The only way to nail'em,
was to drop it on their heads.

    We set hooks,and netted
for the rest of the day.
    With smiles on our faces,
    thinking about the pay.

    And the at the weigh-in
    as nervous as hell.
    Worrying 'bout what everyone
    had in their well.

    We talked to a few,
    and some news was good.
    We hoped about placing,
but something told me we would.

    As we sat,and waited
    for the final decision,
    Our tournement "Skunking"
    was finally in remission.

    With a lunker Smallie,
    and total of 13.3
    It was a grand day,
    for my partner,and me

Thanks to all who made this all happen.
    It was a fine tourney,
You can tell from the applause, and all of the clappin'

1003.308The Offical Results.....FOOZLE::SCHOLZRon....and thanks for all the fishMon May 22 1989 15:30163
The day was great and so were the people. It was nice to see some of
you again and meet the ones I haven't. All in all not a bad day for
    fishing.

The offical results are behind the form feed. Here is a brief summary
of what went down. The Greek had it right at the top. Les Baczko and
Craig Arcari took first place with a great catch of 20 lbs total
weight for 10 fish. They were culling after 11:00 and caught ten more
fish by the time it was over. That is great
fishing......Congratulations to Les and his "never to be allowed in a
    DEC tournament again" partner Craig....;^)

Second Place went to two of nicest people at the tourney. Jeff and
Lorene Lange not only took second, but they also took the lunker award
for the biggest Smallmouth with a fine 3.2 lb fish. They also had a
3.15 lb largemouth in the livewell along with six others for a total of
8 fish. Congrats to a couple that know how to fish.......

Third place went to Bob Puishys and Rick (Read/Only) Palmer with a
total of 10 fish weighing in at 13 lbs even. They had six smallies and
4 biggies...... My thanks to Bob for the great job he did at the
Weigh_In. Couldn't have done it without him..... Oh yea,
    congratulations too......

Forth Place went to the team of John Accica and George Phipps with a
fine catch of 6 fish totaling 11.4 lbs. John and George also teamed up
to win the Lunker Award for the biggest Largemouth with a fine 3.7 lb
fish. Great job by both of these nice guys.......

Fifth Place went to Rich Neal and the Keg.....now we know why he's
called the Keg....... They brought in 8 fish, all largemouths, for a
total of 10.55 lbs. Nice going.

Here are some of the totals for the day.
Total fish Caught......95 (105 if you count the culls)
Total Weight ..........143.2 lbs (not bad!!!!!!!)
    		Total Largemouths......81
    		Total Smallmouths......14

Total Entries..........27 (the largest turnout in history)
We had three no shows, buit picked up two late entries. So, of the 28
that signed up we ended up in real good shape.

Beats Monomonock all to heck and then some........:^)

My special thanks to Gary Mattson for keeping track of all the entries
and keeping us all in our collective toes......Thanks Gary!!!!

If you are thinking whats the payout(??????) figure it out for
yourself. I'm staying away from putting that info in here. It is
illegal to use the companies equipement for profit.........

My partner Mick and I would like to thank everybody for the
best tourney that I've ever been to (this was my first). We had a
great time,we caught some sun (outch my poor shoulders!), caught
some fish unfortunatly not all keepers, and tied for rule#1. We
met alot of great people and as I said it was a great tourney.

The only casulty was a borken radio antenna and a couple of
dings in the gel coat and prop, not bad for a day on a rocky lake.
One thing that I learn is that I will never go out again without
    a electric trolling motor.

PS.Thanks Bassing Bob for the intruction you gave us on the way
to go home, it was much faster and easier than the way to the lake.
We got home in about half the time.

PPS. When is the next tourney??

Post Tourney Thoughts:

1. Great time! My first tournament. Good lake, good fishing, great
weather, great choice.

2. Excessive fish mortality. Too many bass died -- pro tournaments
apparently have mortality rates around 2%-5%. We seemed to have in excess
of 10%. I lost 3 of 8 fish (delicious at dinner, but I still would have
liked to release them). Could the pro's supply guidelines and suggestions
for the next tournament? We were probably victims of our own success in
catching too many fish for the facilities. (Questions: How many fish can
you keep in a cooler? How often should you change water? What about
chemicals or ice?) Could we have a mid-tourney weigh in at the next event?

3. Should we consider shorter events? After about noon, the speedboats and
skiers were kicking up a lot of wakes. What about a 7:00-12:00 or 6:00-11:00
event?

4. We need a get-together after the tournament! I didn't meet enough
people and match enough names and faces. See next item:

5. Perhaps a bit too much money involved. Payout for first place
especially was a bit serious for a fun event. $10 entry fee is fine, but
if we are going to have that large a turnout, maybe some of the entry fees
could be used for a barbecue or something like that?

6. Rule #1 was followed, congratulations to the organizers for a great job,
and when is the next one?!?

    Fish Dying...

As long as you have an adiquit airation system, there shouldn't have
    been a problem.

I had eight fish in a 30 qt cooler with air circulating at 450 gal per
minute. It was fine for the fish...same water stayed cool all day.
I had one fish go belly up on me ONLY because it was hooked so
deeply, and also snagged a part of it's gill.

As far as the B-B-Q after the event...

Sounds like a good idea...now were talking two commitee's one for the
tourney, and one for the chow. If a Totally "Just FUN tourney" is sought
after, maybe someday one could be arranged where all entries are paid
up front...BB-Q commitee takes care of their end...and tourney commitee
takes the pay out...and goes and buy's prizes....and everyone who fishes
    gets "something" at the end.

    For instance 1st prize being a Delco Voyager,and a rod/reel set up...or
a nice takle box...or whatever....and so on down the line...?

What do the pro's do. Well for one they have pumps that will pump
fresh water and air into thier live wells. I had a ten fish limit
(not saying I am a pro) and did not loose a fish, but because of
the heat we had the pump with a timer on for a minute then off for
    a minute.

Last Sunday the federation tournament on quinsig had 51 boats.
8 boats or so had limits every boat but two had fish. There were
only 3 dead fish weighin. I saw them all since I ran the scale.

Coolers are not the greatest way to keep fish, but if it is all
you have fine. Invest in a pump, you can get some good rigs from
Bass Pro shop and other places cheap. Don Mac what did yours cost?
A fish tank air pump that runs on battaries is ok.

The only other comment is that people should get a ruler.
To many short fish were brought up to the scale and most
of them were dead. It was too bad.

Thanks Ron, Bob, Gary and everybody for a fun tourney.

So... what was the winning combination Les ?

We fished the north shore of the cove off to the left right after
you left the channel bouys. Caught 6 fish at 9.0 lbs and missed
3 each at the boat. We got them all on small Gitzit's and Pig and
Jig, casting to the edge of docks and shore.

I have a question on aerators... How much juice does one like the
$ 30.00 model in Bass Pro use? My sole power is a 85 amp Die hard
and a 28 lb Minn Kota.

I bought a 300g/h airator from BassPro for about $24.00 and
ran the pump from 8:30am till weight in on a regular car battery
that I borrowed from my other car. When back at home,I threw it in
the car and it started just fine. So I don't think that the draw
    is very high.

As for the next tourney, the idea of a 5 or 6 hour tourney and a
BB-Q at the end sounds like a great idea. Plus it would be a chance
    to meet more people.

Bob, I use the "Catch Saver" Livewell Aerator. $29.97 page 177 of the
BPS Spring catalog. It comes with the 400gph pump, hose and spray
tube. Works great. I've only lost fish at one real hot, long
tournament where lots of boats lost fish. I should have paid closer
attention to the water temp. (I was even using catch and release
    formula but that's another subject)

Since loosing the fish I pay closer attention to the water temp. Only
once, on a real hot day, have I had to replace the water.

I also run it off an 85am batter along with a 28lb Minnkota, no probs.
    (power drain is 1.5 amps)

1003.321Please Sir cna I have another....CECV03::SURRETTETue May 23 1989 16:3246
    Hi all,

I'd like to thank all the people involved woth organizing the best
ever DEC tourney, It took an aweful lot work, and I for one appreciate
    it.

I accomplished the four things that I really wanted to in this
    tourney:

    	1) HAVE FUN !! I had a great time, the weather, fish and people
    	   all contributed.

        2) I DIDN'T GET SKUNKED !!! After last years showing at
Hopkington, I knew I could never show my face again at another
DEC tourney if I got skunked at my only two tournies !!
(The fact that we caught 4 fish was gravy!)

        3) Learn something. Since I'm a new boat owner (Last year)
I'd never fished for spawning Bass or even knew what to
look for. If it weren't for Les and partner catching 5 bass
right in front of us, we'd still be fishing for pre-spawn
bass (which I'd never done before either!)

        4) Met some great people, in particular the Sullivans who
peaked just a week too early with that fine performance
while pre-fishing but never lost their sense of humor,
and Jeff "We'll see you on the National trail soon" and
Lorene Lange (Be honest, Jeff, Lorene caught ALL those
fish except that short smallie ;^) ), and all the others
that followed rule #1 (This is beginning to sound like
    	   some goofy acceptance speech !!)

Anyhow, One question about technique, did most people go for the
spawning fish, and use gitzits/grubs to git'em ? I took one bass
at 7:30 or so on my second cast of the day and a sloping rocky bank
in 5 ft of water with a jig-n-pig, otherwise the other were taken
    as stated above. Just wondering.

1003.322The 20LB. Break Down!!PACKER::BACZKOGone Fishin'Tue May 23 1989 17:0868
Well I had one of the best days fishing in a long time on
Saturday!! Winning was a bonus but 20 LBS was the most I or
Craig have ever weighed in at any team tournament. We estimated
that we had about 16 - 17 pound, but 20 blew us away. I cant
believe that Bassin Bob got the pole position in the launch on
his home lake, AMAZING, I think the hat size that we were pulling
out of was Size 1 and he yanked the tag out. 8>) 8>)
I really learned how to fish the spawn that day, Craig was a
bundle of info and I used methods that were bizarre but real pro-
ductive. We started out at the small island near the brush pile
and worked the shore line down in to Holebrook Cove. I picked up
2 on that shoreline on a Chart/pepper Gitzit right on the bank
next to a log about a foot of water, one was about 2.5 Lb and the
other about 12". We cruised into the cove, where Puishys tried to
push us out, Geez Bob we were behind you fishing used water, but
Bob insisted that we get 100' away or get diqualified (SEE RULE 1)
So we left the cove in short notice, no problem. 8>)
We then went down to the road and the rocks, nothing. Then we
went to the shoreline behind the two big islands. I caught a short
bass and Craig put his first in the boat again about a 2.5 Lb. both
right up tight on the shore in real shallow water. This triggered it,
the pattern was identified, MOVE IN CLOSE!!!!! We moved about 10-15
feet off the shore line and the water right behind us was about 9 feet
deep, We then saw LOTS OF BASS, from this point on all but 2 of our
fish we saw. Craig put the next 6 in the boat. His first fish to his
seventh fish took about 30 mins. This gave us 9 in the well. We
followed that shore line in and out of every cove using the same
technique. We would spot a bed or a bass sunning in the shallows, we
would both flip a gitzit (pumpkinseed) or grub behind it and one at a
time run it past the fish. If it didn't take notice we would change
colors, and use the same pattern. Some times they would just pick up the
bait and carry it out, you couldn't barely feel it, if it wasn't for
Polaroids we would of missed alot, If they did this to often we would
cut the tails off the lure right at the hook, this worked pretty good
when needed. But the trick was to keep running different lures by them
until you found the color that ticked him off. At eleven we had our
first cull. By 1 we had caught over 15 keepers. We did spend close
to two hours on one fish. It was about 4-5 lbs. Craig had it on once
but it snapped the line when it darted under the boat, she was about
8 feet from the boat when he hooked it and it came straight for us.
We saw fish on just about every shore line in the beds, smallies seemed
to be by the rock wall and the large mouth everywhere. But like I said
the main pattern us up close in 1 to 2 feet of water, near deep water,
using Gitzits, Grubs, and stingray grubs, the natural colors worked
best, but when nothing worked we would try chartuse and usually catch
    them.

I Had a BLAST!!!! It was good to meet everyone and I even got a few
recruits for our club. But the best part was beaten Bassin Bob on his

Haaha ahahah aha Real funny Gus..."National Trail"....I think I need
about 10 more years of "tournement fishing" before even attempting such
    a task.

    As for technique...

The day before I went fishing in Harvard @ Bare Hill Pond with a friend
    of mine...
We found them to be hitting topwater in the a.m. up tight in 1 - 2 feet
of water. then as the day went on we found them guarding beds in just a
little deeper water 3 feet "maybe"....and the Kalin Grub did well.

Both Friday, and Saturday were practically identical weather wise, and I
applied the same strategy. In the morning at Manchaug we hit that cove
by where you were Gus, and after missing 3,and getting one in about an
hour...we moved on to find the beds...

As you came through the two bouys to the right was an extremly rocky
shore that came out about fifty feet, with a sand/fine gravel bottom. if
you followed that shore line up to where there was a pubic type
swimming area..(had a sort of roped off area) was...that's where we
found 5 of our eight. if you kept going up the shore line there was a
snady/bushy island there.( Might have seen people beached there
boats, and were swimming), well in there it was loaded with beds. Picked
up another there, in about 2 feet of water....it was real shallow in an
area about 50 yards wide, and long. The big largemouth we caught in the
cove shraight across by that tiny little island with the little
house, and sunbathers were....then the last fish of the day was caught
about 100 yards from the tow bouy's on the left as you headed in to the
    ramp.

all except the first boated fish were caugh tin a Bronze/pepper 5"
    Kalin Grub....

dying to go back to Manchaug soon...

Hats off to you folks sharing your techniques for success!!

That's what these "rule #1" tournaments should be all about!

Just a quick note to thank all of the tourney organizers. It was by
far the best of the bunch. Great day, fishing and it even started on
    time!!

Les, That was one hell of a catch. I've never seen so may bass caught
by two guys!! A great job!

Concerning next time I agree we maybe should stop the tourney earlier
and get together for lunch and a few drinks. It would be nice to sit
and bull----t. with some of people.

Last but not least concerning the dead fish. Believe me noone felt as
badly as me fish me one dead fish. As most of you know by now I alwas
return my fish as soon as there caught. I used a cooler and changed
the water about every hour but still the fish died. Next time I will
break down and by a airratter.

    				See you all then,

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......

To all that had a hand in putting together this event STAND-UP....
What great time, this was my first tourney, and I hope it will not be my
last. It sure was good to meet some of you folks, what impressed me most was the
way everyone was willing to share there secrets on how/where they caught
there fish. I was told by some folks before the tourney, that this was the
way it happened, but I was still doubtful, boy was I WRONG......I can't
tell you what a GREAT TIME I had....

I would also like to thank my partner (Al Whitman) for putting up
with a newcomer, it was great day with a new friend.

I agree with the MASSMASTER, lets get something going for the summer,
with our family's, I would be glad to help in the organization of such an
event....

Thanks to all the" BROTHER'S OF THE FIN".

I don't know about my partner, but,I know I had good clean fun!
How come nobody showed for the noontime cookout on Captain Dick
Nemos cruze ship?? Coupla pops some nice steaks and Po salad,It
was a beautiful thing!!! We were the ones anchored by the yellow
house on the island. At least I got some fish or I would have had
to walk back to Natick from there,so I was told by the Captain.
I caught all my fish on a #1 Daredevil trolling near the hump
in the middle of the Lake. That was the first time I saw the Lake
and it has ALOT of bass in there, ewe could see them without a
problem, just wish I caught as many as I lost.Thanx to those that
           arranged the tourney!!!

Yo Keg, We had someone show up at our cookout, don't you remember
that bozo with the fire extinguisher that thought the boat was on fire?
I think we had a chance at placing a little higher in the ranks if you
didn't cook that 4# bass I caught on the Jenson Dodger with the 5/0
hook attached. But no you said "There are plenty more where that came
from." The best part of the whole tourney was when I reached into the
old hat for my number and came up with the big 24! Really made my day.

I did have a great time, it seems that anyone that had any luck was
fishing with plastic (grubs/worms/etc). I did pull the biggest fish
we saw of the day out from under a large rock in 6' of water.
Unfortunately the Keg knocked it of the hook with the net. I would guess
it was 4-5 lbs. most others were caught in the shallows. I had a great
time, except the comedian in the back of the boat wouldn't let up for a
    second.

    Lets do it again soon

Ya Rich I knocked it off cause ewe wouldn't let me harpoon
it "Like I told ya!".He said "thats not that big getem with
the net",so I hit the bass in the head with the net end and
caught Rich in the back of the head with the pole end ala
the three stooges.Hey "STUFF HAPPENS" ya know???

If you guys want I can check the price for renting the Marlboro
Fish & Game outside facilities. I am membership chairman down there
but I wouldn't be able to get it at a members rate because there
    is
no way I could claim all you as my family. There is only 2 rules,
you have to promise to stay away from the ponds(members only) and
you cannot bring booze in. You can get a bartender pretty cheap.
The club doesn't make that much on the rental so that's why they
sell their own liquor. Let me know If you are interested, I think
a cookout would be a lot of fun.
