528.0. "TILT CONFIGURATION" by JUNIOR::WLODYKA () Fri Nov 13 1987 12:18

I'm interested in how other people are configuring their tilts for
ice fishing. I have about fifteen tilts that I wanted to set up
for different situations. I think I'd like to have 5 for bass,
5 for Pick and pike and 5 for trout. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. If you could be specific about hook size and style,
leader length, mono or steel, bait preference, weights and how all
    are attached.

    I live for ice fishing.

    Thanks,
    Dave

15 tilts ? how many fisherman? I thought there was a limit per
person, at least down here in RI. Any comments?

As for setting up for bass, pike and trout, you usually catch what
you don't expect anyway; its not that scientific. If it was, it
    wouldn't be much fun. ;^)

Ma too. No more than 2 hooks per fisherman during regular fishing,
or 5 hooks per fisherman during ice fishing.

528.3MisunderstandingJUNIOR::WLODYKATue Nov 17 1987 11:5113
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I know it is five tilts per
person. What I wanted to do was to have five of each set up ahead
of time so what ever I decided to fish for that day I could just
grab them and go. I imagine that the configuration for bass, pick
and pike would be about the same but trout tend to be line shy so
I expect a lengthy piece of mono filiment would be required. I bring
the kids sometimes and have on occasion put out 10. I new those
kids would come in handy for something one day. With the new power
auger I bought no problem making holes.

Dave, since you aren't getting any direct answers from these
ladies,it is obvious that they are not true fisherman.I'll
         tell you what I'd do.

5 tilts I would use regular ice fishing line and FILL the spool
using a LARGE snapswivel with 6 to 8 inch steel leader and large
bait holder hook. This config I use for Pike,Pick, and bass as
sometimes you catch a wandering bass.

5 tilts I would use the same ice fishing line but I would use
         10 to 20 feet of 4 to 6 pound monofilament leader.This I would
use for trout as they tend to be "line shy".Use a small swivel
in case you need to change hook size, the smaller the better,.
FILL the spool because trout love to run with the bait before
stopping to eat, then when they take off the second time you
set the hook,so we are talking a half spool of line before
         you can set the hook.

The other 5 tilts I would use as backups, having a couple setup
for trout and a couple for Pike and pick or maybe so another
friend could use them.I even keep any that break for parts.

                                         Hope I helped

re-1 hit the nail on the head. The same setup I use.

I just remove the wire leader at the swivel and add 20" of 6lbs
for trout. I tie my trout hooks on to the mono. I like a gold
    plated hook for trout.

As for bait, shiners works good for all. Sound the bottom then
move up 2'. Now a trick some people use as well as myself, is to
put a small button on your line, I use a punch out from a piece
of rubber. When you sound the bottom then move the marker 2 feet
up. This saves you the trouble of re-sounding after every fish.

If you have no luck try moing up 4' or more. I will keep moving
until I find the right location. I have had trout on new ice hit
1 foot down from the ice!!

You can also put some eggs or corn on a small hoot and leave it
    on the bottom for trout.

    Good luck

Yo Lindsay,	You hoser, we forgot to ask the gentalmen what kind
of trout. If you be going for dem lakers ya hafta use the 10# test.
Ya remember??? I didnt think so, you were too cocked. As for the
hooks, Remember the locals were using the treble hooks for the lakers?
You should let the laker take almost all the line too.

20 ft of mono? I dont think you need that much, but to each his
    own, personaly I use 10ft.

another tip, take a section of cardboard, make up your mono set-ups
make some cuts along 2 oposite edges and wrap your mono set-up onto
the cardboard and finish it off by sticking the hook into the
cardboard. That way you are ready to do any kind of fishing with
    all your tilts.

BTW Lindsay, I am makin plans for another NY Ice Fishing adventure
    Interested?

528.11Bait size may be importantMTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAUWed Nov 18 1987 18:427
Another consideration is bait size and tilt (We call them traps)
location. I don't fish through the ice for trout too often but an
accomplished fishing friend always hand picks his shiners for them.
He goes for the small ones. He also set his traps in shallow coves.
I am usually fishing for salmon and set the traps offshore with
the bait not far below the ice. My friend uses short leaders in
all cases. I like to use 6 footers.

Tilts are nice but for fun you should try a short pole with a
spinning/casting reel with light line. Use a small bober rigged
to slip down the line and a small split shot to get the minnow
down. Back in Michigan, as a kid, I used this method and had 3x
more fish then on the tilts.

BTW...

The latest issue of In-Fisherman had a couple of articles about ice-fishing.
One discussed the use of a portable flasher (not LCR as the liquid crystal
display doesn't function well below 30 degrees). The other article give a
number of techniques to rig shiners. It made for interesting reading.

528.14TOURNY ANYONE??SCOMAN::BACZKOThu Nov 19 1987 15:338
    re .8
I agree with Lindsay on the set up. It's how mine are set up,
but I only use about 6'-8' of mono leader for trout.

What do you think about an ice-fishing tourny this year, anyone
    interested?????

I'm in on any ice fishing tourney that comes
about this winter as I won't do this kind of
thing in summer as I can't walk on water like
                    I hear the Legend can.

Re; .12

Such rigs are fine for warm weather area's, but up here tend
to turn into solid masses even under benign condishuns. Stick
with standard traps and avoid anything that has the spool above
the water level if coming "north" to icefish.
