1579.0. "UK NEWS??." by VIVIAN::C_MIDGLEY () Wed May 01 1991 00:58

    Hello,
my name is Colin, I am based in London (c/s), unfortunately
there is no UK fishing conference (that I can find?), so I thought
I would give the good old USA the benefit of my very limited sea
    fishing knowledge???.

The winter season over here has been very poor, especially on the
east coast of Britain ie- Suffolk/Essex where I normally beach fish.
The winter run of cod we were hoping for never arrived, although some
boat fishing and the odd beach fishing did produce some sizeable fish.

A fair ammount of codling have been taken though, but nothing worth
taking home, this could be promising for next season (I hope?), still
bass are now starting to appear together with good sized flatties, lets
hope it makes up for the poor show of cod.

Reading through your conference so far, you all seem to be having a
good sea fishing season, I would like to hear some more updates if
some of you have the time.

    Best of luck to all,
                         Colin.

    Hi Colin
We fish out of Massachussets and have been out twice for cod this year.
From a boat. This species is making a good come back, and has a 19in.
minimum length. The bigger ones are usually out on the banks, but there
is enough around to get something in the freezer.
The flounder stock (or flatties as u call them) are in trouble. They
are really getting scarce and hard to find... they have a 12 inch
limit. The strippers are just starting to move in as well as the
mackeral...so there should be good fishing ahead in the next month.

Be interested in hearing more about what species you go after, as the
season changes..any size limits...how easy is it for you to get access
to shore fishing, pollution problems etc...

1579.2UK UPDATE?.VIVIAN::C_MIDGLEYSun May 05 1991 09:0325
    Hello Bob,
nice to hear from somebody on the other side of the
atlantic?. Well from your report you must have all the cod over there?,
over here the cod only started to show late season, big fish around
20+lb?, these are normally taken from boats wreck fishing where as you
know the bigger fish inhabit. As for us beach casters, the east coast as
I mentioned before had a poor show of cod, those caught on average
around 2-6lb?, the smaller ones are thrown back, although saying that,
there are a lot of codling about so come next winter things may look up
    for the better.
I think going by what you say, we have all the flatties over here??,
these normally consist of flounders, plaice, dabs, sole, good baits for
these are peeler crab, lug worm, or rag worm, some of these fish range
from 2-4lb for flounder, 2-6lb for plaice, sole and dabs are mixed?.
There have been some isolated cases of pollution, some heavy crude, and
marine diesel, these have occured in various places around the UK, one
in Poole harbour, Dorset, where a quite a bit of diesel escaped into
the harbour which in the past has produced good bags of flounders, we
will have to see the affect of this as it only happened recently?.
If you like Bob, I can forward some recent copies of the UK magazine
"Sea Angler" to you to give you a better idea of whats going on over
here, send me your internal mail address and I will send them to you.

    Keep in touch, best regards
                                Colin.
1579.3update the update?VIVIAN::C_MIDGLEYSun May 05 1991 15:5813
    Bob,
as an afterthought, do you know anybody who has used the wire cable
from RA80/1 disk drives as traces with any success, do they hold up to
good poundage?, I was thinking of making up some rigs for conger eel
    fishing over wrecks?.
These wires would save quite a bit of money, if you make your own
traces, as you loose quite alot of tackle fishing wrecks, I dont know
if you know conger over here, but the record is well in excess 100lb?.
Look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards
            Colin.
