1431.0. "Atl.Salmon unloaded in mass sm.town?" by LUDWIG::KERSWELL () Sat Jun 09 1990 16:39

has anyone heard?? of this or is it a rumor??

I was talking to some when i was camping out in Rutland/hubbardston.
and some guy was telling me that in some lake around here in mass,
that a stocking truck was loaded with salmon and for some reason
bein a machanical problem or what ever that they had to unload the
salmon in an undesignated lake other wise they would die, so they
unloaded the salmon in that place, the town was possibly Concord
    Ma.

has any heard or know of this place.

If it was Concord, my guess would be Whites Pond. Someone told
me that they put Smelt in Whites for the Brown Trout, never heard
    of that before either....

I will try and take a ride to the the fish and game in Acton this
week and see if they confirm that report of dumping salmon in the
town of Concord. I work in Littleton so its a short ride. Will update
    when I find out..
1431.3out of the woodworkLUDWIG::KERSWELLTue Jun 12 1990 15:5114
after talking with a few people about the rumor. I heard
even a bit more. whats new that i heard was that 2 guys in the stocking
truck just decided by themselves to dump the salmon in the water,
and it wasnt a must life or death for the fish, anyway, the people
that fish that place regular starting pulling in these fish wondering
excactly what species they were catching, because i guess they do
stock trout in that particulate water, and they took one of the
fish down to have it checked out by the F&G. after that they checked
all the stocking reports and i think from what i heard they are going
to hold a crimanal action against the 2 drivers.

the family geans, when it does slow down i slap on a grub, or some

1431.14I've caught smelt bigger than thisVICKI::DODIERFood for thought makes me hungryFri Jun 22 1990 18:0214
This is not a rumor. I heard this on WGIR AM a couple days ago. I think
they said it was at Snows pond but don't quote me on that. They also said
that the 2 people that did it took it upon themselves and are up on charges.

The way they got caught was someone went to the Fish and Game to
find out what kind of TROUT they were catching and it turned out they
were salmon. The folks at F+G put 2 and 2 together and I guess these two
admitted what they did when questioned. According to the report they were
small salmon (around 9") and a bunch of kids were having a field day
catching them. I also thought I remembered hearing something about
these not being of legal size to keep ???

SHHHH! Every one KEEP QUIET! (we could have a great fall/ice
fishin' tourney down there..IF Y'AL WIL KEEP THIS QUIET!!!

I know where wear is, and I can find rte 9. I think it time for me
and the kids to take a Toyota LandCruiser Road trip.(That means it will
take us an extra hour, and we'll be deaf when we get there, but if it's
on top of a mountainn, we'll be able!)

I would de<rly love it if these animals were placed in an
"undesignated" area. Fapit. Natural areas for them have been
eliminated. MABEY, they will adapt.*(BTW the idea of their 'accidental
establishment' makes me sing. Since we all have polluted them out of
existance around here, it seems only fair that they have a shot ..only
    ifthey ain't fished out!)

I hope that the area that they were SUPPOSED to be dropped in GOT
    its consignment!

HAS ANYONE CHECKED OUT THAT SIDE OF THE RUMOR???

It would be great to find A.S. in a stream or pond... but not at
the expense of aprogram that is trying to RE-introduce the animal back
    into it's native range.
KNOWING THIS STATE,.. THEY WON'T PUT OUT ANY MORE!

I would like to )Someday) see A.S swimmin up the tributary to the
Assebett that runs through my back yard..If we all jumpm down there
and catch-and-eat ..... we can see the Dictator of Mass. eliminating
the stocking program. (this is MHO)

A mistake was made. (I repeat, I would dearly love to catch one)
but let's just , either leave 'em. OR COMPLETELY break the laws,
Catch 'em,....put 'em in a live well or ariated bait bucket,.
and say fap it and dump 'em out in some other pond that has a
tributary!!! The way THIS state is headed, the only stocking
that will be sensible will be private-AS LONG AS IT'S NATIVE FISH THAT
    WERE ELIMINATED BY PAST POLLUTION/DEVELOPMENT!

THAT IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL, AND THAT IS MY OWN OPINION.

1431.17LANDLOCKED SALMON ...WFOV11::WHITTEMORE_JOut for TroutMon Jun 25 1990 18:0839

Well here it is - I just got off the phone with Mark Tisa at the
Westborough Department of inland fisheries (508-366-4470)
                                        or (508-366-4479).

He confirmed the release of 500 - 1000 LANDLOCKED SALMON smolts
(6" - 9"), from the Roger Reed Hatchery in Palmer, into Snows pond
in Ware MA. The salmon were destined for Quabbin and were from brood
stock from Winnipa_however_you_spell_it and somewhere in Maine. He feels
there is no chance that the smolts will survive long/well enough to
found a reproductive population.

As for Atlantic Salmon in the state of Mass - there is a no kill
regulation in effect for the entire Conneticut river watershed. There
were over 450,000 Atlantic Salmon smolts from the Roger Reed Hatchery
stocked into the Westfield River Watershed - Part of the Conneticut
river watershed - this past spring.

It IS legal to catch & kill Atlantic Salmon (18'' minimum length)
taken in the Merrimac(sp) river ABOVE Essix(sp) Damn in Laurence
MA - above the Rt28 bridge - but F&W removes 100% of the Atlantic Salmon
from the Essix Damn fish way so there's little chance of catching any
anyway (although of the six that got past the fish way last year two
were caught in N.H.).

I live for the day that Atlantic Salmon once again run up into
the hills of Massachusetts to spawn - I hope I see the day.

Joe Whittemore - From where the Westfield
                                                Meets the Westfield
                                                   By the Westfield
                                                      In Huntington (MA)

Post Script - The rule of thumb for distinguising Salmon from Trouts
is that trouts have black spots (or mottling) on there
dorsal fins while salmon do not.
1431.18Let's build the population BEFORE we decimate itMSDOA::CUZZONEWarning! Aliens approaching!Tue Jun 26 1990 13:0013
I have accidently caught atlantic salmon placed in the Westfield. They
were 6-9" and looked like little silver brown trout but fought like
sonsabitches. I finally had to leave one spot after I caught 3 on 3
successive casts including one I gill-hooked. I look forward to the
day when I can catch an adult A S legally without traveling to some
    remote, inhospitable place.

Considering that the return rate is so low ... last week the Conn.
river count was around 300 (118 for the week, though) out of what, Joe,
450,000?, I'd say they were best unmolested and shame on these idiots
who wasted a load in a body of water where they will not survive.

Re: .17

Don't miss the main point of .17 - the fish discharged into
Snows pond in Ware were

			LANDLOCKED Salmon

                    not

			ATLANTIC Salmon

Re: .18

That's right - fourhundredfifty THOUSAND Atlantic Salmon smolts
released into the Westfield river watershead this past spring! These fish,
however, should not be heading out to sea untill next spring. They should
return as two or three year old adults in 1992 - if I understand the cycle
correctly. There are some major efforts ongoing to get fishways lifts
etc. installed at the three damn dams that impede the return of androminous(sp)
fishes.

There's a great artical on Pacific Salmon in this months National
Geographic. I'm sure the fundimentals of the life cycle would apply to
Atlantic Salmon as well.

It's tough to be selective on just what you catch when you have
legal fish and protected fish in the same body of water as is the case
with the Westfield. The best that can be hoped for is that the majority
of sportsmen are ware of the differences between Atlantic Salmon and
the trouts and give a damn! I hate to think of the numbers of juvenile
Atlantic Salmon at risk due to illegal harvest! Thanks, from all of
us, for moving on!

I've been following this note with interest. For some reason I can't let
the word "salmon" go by my terminal without reading the body of the
text. I have to agree with Joe. The article in National Geo is quite
good. The pictures are great. I thought they did a nice job of
capturing the controversy over the fish. Most of the people you meet
on the water blame the Indians for netting too many. The Indians blame
the new generation of urban settlers for building on the rivers etc and
wiping out breeding grounds. It really is a mess. But everyone shares
an honest respect for the great fish. The salmon truly is one hell of
a fish. The way Washington is being built up, we can only hope we can
keep the species going here with responsible management programs.

I have an anecdote regarding salmon smelt that I'd like to share. When
Joe said he caught that little smolt and it fought like hell, it
reminded me of a similar case. It was a very hot sunny afternoon last
August and my wife and I decided to put the boat on Lake Washington
just to putt putt around and maybe take a swim. Of course, I brought a
light rod and some trout gear. We stopped the boat to drift across a
nice trout hole. I let down a tasty looking salmon egg and put the rod
in the rod holder. I was playing with the dog and looked out about 50
feet across the water and I see this little fish jumping out of the
water with such ferocity! In-out-in-out....2 maybe 3 feet in the air.
Then I realized it was on my line. I grabbed the rod and reeled the
little sucker in. Sure enough it was about a 6 inch coho smolt. I
gently released him and ZOOOMM!! off he went toward the locks and Puget
Sound. Maybe I'll catch him again next fall.

Those beautiful fish are born fighters!

it would've been a lot nicer had everyone not squealed about the
planting until the fish gained 3+ pounds...then everyone would have
real fighters on the end of their lines........not just something
    to reel in.
