979.0. "Notesfile hats, etc..." by RAINBO::MACINTYRE (Terminal Angler) Thu Feb 09 1989 17:17

Since we seem to have interest in the notesfile hat idea,
    let's go for it.

And since I'm kinda busy and it was Ed's idea to begin with I asked
him if he'd mind coordinating things and he's agreed.

    So, take it away Ed...

Well, since I now have responsibility for the "notesfile hat project"
(in keeping with the Digital tradition of your idea = your project),
I will gladly accept any suggestions or ideas from other noters,
especially on the design, color selection, and vendor.

Let's try to get an idea of just how many people are interested, so we
can factor in quantity when getting a price from the vendor.

So far we are looking at a high quality, mesh type billed cap, possibly
in an nice shade of blue, with a design of a bass-type fish leaping from
a computer terminal (for my money that says it all!)

This is the official hat note, so anyone who said they wanted one in the
Worchester Expo note should repeat here - thanks.

   So, who's interested?

   Ed

Like I said over in the other NOTE, count me in. Prefer BLUE
since that blends better with the sky out here for camoflage
purposes. :-) Will finalize deal at watering hole next Friday
    evening.

Put me down for two. Blue is OK, but Coonass' suggestion of gray
sounds better to me. Any chance of getting the "digital" logo (prefer
    small and discreet) included?
979.5If chew kin wait...DPDMAI::BEAZLEYFri Feb 10 1989 00:3016

    Ed,
I'd go for a hat also and a patch as well. Do you think they'll
be available in hunter orange? That's kind of a standard here in
    Maine for all outdoor activities.

Might I suggest that when you get a feel for quantity and select
a vender, you post the available options/costs etc. We could make
a final selection based on that list.

Out here in the Great Northwest, only people from Boeing and
Digital (not many deccies) know that Digital no longer makes watches.
I wouldn't mind seeing the DEC logo.

Also, instead of BASS, can we get salmonoid shaped fish on the logo?

Anyway, we can probably muster an order for 2-6. I'd have to ask
around. Fishing is popular at this office. You can't imagine how
many woods meetings take place over a mooching session at Point
    No Point.

is a LIGHT color (light blue or grey etc.) that way it'll be
a little cooler regardless of style. As for the DEC logo, I'd
prefer it only to distinguish ourselves ABOVE the rest of the
    fishing crowd.

    Some comments from the Harbormaster

Corduroy hats don't silk-screen well. I'll look into the cost of
a quality cotton duct hat and also get costs for embroidering the
logo. If the quantities are high enough embroidering may not be
that much and we could investigate producing one hat size 2-color
embroidered patch (similar to the Bass Pro patch). If we produced
50 or more patches we could do have half sewn on hats and offer
    a cloth/embroidered patch too.

I got ideas, just not much extra time these days.

Hey Coonass, I've been back and forth to Fort Worth a bunch of
times over the past 3 months working on the Tandy SHACKmates, but have
been way too busy to even consider a side trip. When things
(if ever) level off and a can squeeze and extra day or two I'll

979.38So far...CASPRO::PRESTONBetter AI than none at allMon Feb 13 1989 15:1628

Thanks for all the input so far - it helps. I hope everyone realizes
that we can only have ONE kind of hat, in ONE color, with ONE design
(logo), and that's what we're getting input for. The resons for
this include cost (cheaper if they're all the same) and lessening
the risk that anyone will be stuck holding orphan caps (green and
purple with jumping catfish, etc). It does look like we might be able
to offer a package deal of a hat and a patch, if we go embroidered
vs silkscreened. It will only add a dollar or two to the price,
and make the patch guys happy.

While this notes conference includes all types of fishing, we are
going to have to settle on one type of fish for the design, *however*,
the fish will have to be somewhat "generic" anyway, because it's only
on a small patch anyway. It seems that there's an awful lot of bass
fishermen in here, so the fish on the design probably will *resemble*
a bass, and the rest of us can pretend it's whatever we like.

So far it seems we've got good response. I'll tally up the preliminary
"orders" to get an idea of how many we're talking about. I've gotten
info from several people on places to have this done, and hope to
have several to choose from soon.

    Did I say I want a hat?

If we're only voting for colors, I want chartreuse or white. Those
    are my most productive colors.

Design: Bass is fine, I don't care if it's jumping out of a terminal
or a lake. I really like the patch on the hat idea (it was mine)
cause I would like a spare patch for the jacket that I'm going to
buy so I can be just like Bassin' Bob, my ideal (as Lil Abner would
    say).

DEC Logo: If it's a hassle, let's leave it alone. This is so we can
identify each other at the mall or movie theatre, right? So, if
the hats are identical, we'll know we're one of us, ok? We'll know
we work for DEC. I don't need a bunch of strangers asking what
    time it is.

Hummmm....lot's of decisions to be made here.

Some folks want a bass with or without strikes. Some folks want a salmon,
or trout, or catfish, or even a kivver!

I vote for a GENERIC fish (whatever that is) leaping out of a GENERIC
terminal. Then we include a small set of colored magic markers and YOU
color in your favorite fish pattern.

Simple, huh?

I would like three, blue or red.

I'm a reunion committee member (for the USS BOSTON Shipmates). We did a
lot of shopping for (1)price and (2)quality. We've dealt with Corporate
Image Apparel in Fall River, Mass. for the past three years. We have
them make hats and embroidered patches for us. This year they're making us
350 hats for our initial order; we may expand the order.

They do direct embroidery in their plant. I provide them with
camera-ready artwork, they produce a tape which programs their machines.
I've had good results by scanning in various images, then printing the
graphics on an LN03. That's the camera-ready artwork I bring them.

They charge us $2.42 per hat plus $2.00 per hat for the direct
embroidery. There is NO COMPARISON between silk screening and direct
embroidery. Silk screening is $1 per hat (vice $2) in quantities <145,
.75 over 145. Embroidered scrambled eggs on the visor are (I think) .25
extra per hat in quantity.

Their hats are made in the US, high quality twill, rubber visor
internals; that means it doesn't collapse when you get caught in the
rain. You can have mesh back or solid.

Outside Mass. call 800-527-2261, inside Mass. 800-834-3269. Ask for
Gilbert Lloyd (company co-owner and VP). This is a moderate sized
business, not a garage operation. They don't deal directly with
the consumer market. Places that take hat orders do business with
Corporate Image.

It may be that the final number of hats that are bought will
directly reflect the choice made as to what they look like

Whoever is doing the planning might find it usefull to propose

Quick figurin' says 76 replies, three-quarters want 2, we're approaching
quantity 100? I didn't compile all the requests so far; someone should do
that.

If the count is high enough to go to the pro (Corporate Image Apparel)
and if that price is okay, I'll deal with them if you want me to. I don't
have time to handle the individual orders, though. Like, counting,
collecting, chasing...

They require a 50% deposit.

I'm no good at drawing; I heard someone else volunteer, right? Like I
said, I have access to a scanner and a laser printer; but no artistic
talent.

So it's going to be a generic fish jumping out of a terminal; any legend?
Like,

        "KO's Bass Busters"

	Update:

So far we have requests for about 95 hats, but I'm sure this
	will go up.

The overwhelming color preference is blue.

About 1 in 10 said they would like a patch to go with the hat.

Mesh seems to be a bit more popular than cord. If we can get
a good quality cotton poplin, we may go with that, since
it's not as hot as corduroy, but classier than mesh.

I have looked at one design sent by Moe Beauchesne, and some
other possibilities. Moe is sending along another one (what
a creative guy!) Dave, if you have a design, go ahead and send
it. We're still open to any and all suggestions.

Also, I'm sure we can work in some reference to Digital in
our own little design, without borrowing any company logos
(don't worry, no clock towers!) You know, something like
"DEC Terminal Anglers". There have been some other very good
    	suggestions made, too (in .78?)

I expect to be meeting with a rep from Corporate Image to have
a look at what they offer and get prices. I'll report afterwards.

How will we do this? Good question! I will get an idea of the
final cost of these items, and post it here. In order to insure
that no one (me) gets caught with a bunch of hats and a depleted
bank account, I may have to ask for payment in advance, prior to
my putting in the order to the vendor. I may set up some kind
of simple order form that you can copy from my personal account,
print out, fill in, and send w. money to me. It may be a bit
more tedious that way, but I'm open to suggestions.

Also, please suggest how they can be delivered. Is interoffice
    	mail a possibility or a no-no?

So far so good. Keep the input coming.

	Thanks,

    	Ed

Sounds like we have enough interest here to hire a professional
artist to do the design. From the quantity of hats committed, a

I (for one) would be willing to chip in that amount now, as a deposit

We've shipped about a hundred hats through the mail. We use a bubble-pack
kraft envelope and the US mail. We get the envelopes from:

        RELIABLE
        1001 W. Van Buren Street
        Chicago, IL 60607
        800-621-4344

The envelopes are (latest catalog):

        40AK2S 8-1/2 X 12 SHIP WT 8lbs 100 Envelopes $29.99
        40AK20025 8-1/2 X 12 SHIP WT 2lbs 25 Envelopes $8.69

So, if you buy them by the hundred they cost about 30 cents each. We mail
them first class for $1.

We use bubble-pack because the hats we had made this year are full foam
lined, and the foam can compress or crease and that's not nice. I've
contacted people across the country after they received our hat, and they
all arrived in perfect shape. A buck thirty ain't cheap, though.

I had some additional thoughts. The wife tells me that we only paid $1
to mail the envelopes when we mail a hat plus a patch or two. A hat alone
goes for .95.

But the discussion of patches made me think; if the design on the hat is
going to be the same as the patch design, don't have direct embroidery on
the hat; have 200 patches made, and have 100 of those patches sewn on the
hats. It's a bit cheaper than direct embroidery, I think. And, the
quantity price break will be better on the patches.

I'm glad we have this hat thing to keep us occupied.

My thoughts on inter-office mail: I don't like the idea of bringing
seventy-odd manila envelopes to the mail office stuffed with hats.
I don't know company policy on use of inter-office mail for these
kind of things, and don't want to find out the hard way that I did
a no-no. I'm glad someone pointed out that inter-office mail can
be just a bit unreliable, too. The last thing I want is for someone
to order a hat, pay for it, then not get it. So far the best idea
seems to be U.S. Mail. Moe Beauchesne told me he sent a new design
for the hat-logo a while back, and I'm still waiting for it...

I still haven't heard from the guy from Corporate Image. I'll try
to get hold of him today.

I'll start composing an order form, but I will not post it until
we know what and how much...

I hate to digress here, but somebody back about 50 or so
notes suggested a "generic fish" rather than a bass, salmon,
or trout. Is that a requirement?

I must say that I would prefer an OSF standard generic fish
to a bass. No offense to the bass fishing community for which I have
always held high praise, but I don't think the bass fishing community
would be tickled to death over a salmon either.

I guess it really doesn't matter but I had an extra $.02.

    Generic fish?!? GENERIC FISH??!!??

No way! Generic fish is unidentified frozen packages that you get
at the grocery store or certain "mystery meat" in the cafeteria
-- not suitable subjects for high quality, certain to be collectors
items, badges of identification for the Digital fishing fraternity!

Let it be known that I respectfully disagree with this blasphemous
    proposal.

  HATS UPDATE:

The hat project continues to move along after a few minor delays.
I have finally heard from Corporate Image Apparel in Fall River, and
will be meeting with one of their reps next week to see what they have
and arrive at a price. In the interest of economy and simplicity, we must
keep things as basic as possible, so I have to ask some questions:

We can have our logo done on a large number of patches, have
a patch sewn on each hat, and include an extra patch with each hat.
This means that if you order 3 hats you get 3 patches, too.

			OR

Direct embroidery on the hats (a little fancier) and NO patches.
It's too expensive to do both.

I don't have any firm prices, but it looks like we can do them for less
than $7 apiece, not including packaging or shipping. I'll ask them
whether or not they can do that as well. It may add some to the price of

the hats, but might well be worth the convenience.

Corporate Image offers a professional artist service for a reasonable
fee. I will give then what we have and a good idea of what we want,
and they will try to come up with something nice...

Please, comment before Thursday on your preference: hat and patch as
package deal for everyone, or direct embroidery with no extra patch.

Ordering will begin soon after we get a price and a final logo design.

  Thanks,

  Ed

I would suggest going with the embroidered patches rather than directly
    on the cap.

    	1. It will simplify satisfying those who want both.

    	2. I would guess it would cost less to have it done this way
(it seems easier to fit a patch into the machine rather
    		than a whole hat)
    	3. A patch sewn to the crown of the cap helps it retain its
    		shape a lot longer.

Much as I like direct embroidery, in this case I vote for patches. One plus is
that we buy just one hat design; you want a clone hat for clone fisherpersons,
you find a hat for little'uns, have the wife sew the patch on...

Had another idea for the design.

	Status update: OK! OK! OK!

Someone at Corporate Image dropped the ball a while back, and
a couple of calls had to be made to get their attention. I got
a call from the pres of the company apologizing profusely for
the delay (he hinted that somebody's backside was going to get
scorched for it), but a rep called and we met last week. I've
been out sick for a few days, so this update is a little late...

Good news is: progress is being made!

	BUT...

I need VOLUNTEERS! This thing is starting to come together,
but to pull it off we will need some help. A hat has been
chosen (see below) and the logo is being designed (see below),
and I will have a price soon. But one large problem remains:
How can these hats be distributed? Most of the orders are
from MA/NH, but the rest are from all over the country, and
we have to decide how they will be delivered. The best idea
so far is to send the MA/NH hats to key people at the larger
facilities, and let them handle distribution for people near
them, and UPS the rest (to WA, LA, OK, wherever...)

We have requests for well over 100 hats, but I don't know
exactly how many. Would someone out there be willing to
extract the replies from this note and count the number of
hats wanted? You don't have to go into detail - just a total
for now will be fine. Also, I need a distribution list of all
people requesting hats so far, so I can Vaxmail an order form
to everyone who has expressed an interest. This would help a
	lot. Thanks.

ALSO, if someone can do it, it would be VERY helpful if we
can know how many orders might have to be shipped UPS vs.
hand distributed at the larger sites - not the number of hats
to be shipped, but the number of orders. I think that including
the cost of shipping a few hats with the total cost will keep
the price down for everyone. Shipping costs will have to be
	estimated in advance.

I met with a rep from Corporate Image, and our hats will be
royal blue cotton poplin, with a patch sewn on the crown,
and include an extra patch for whatever you want. Everybody
	gets the extra patch.

I gave him everything I had for design suggestions, including
several designs sent by Moe Beauchesne, and a few clippings from
magazines, etc. that suggest what we want. The only wording
will be "Terminal Angler", since there isn't be room on the
patch for anything more. Their artist will create a design based
on what we have given them, then send me a copy on approval.
Changes can be made until we get what we want.

Once a design is finalized, the order can be placed. A 50%
	deposit will be necessary.

If there are any suggestions, objections, etc, please make them
known, while changes can be made. Once the order is placed,
	that's it.

979.186What do you think Ed?????SALEM::EASTERThu Mar 16 1989 15:3621
Ed, I have a suggeston!! The individuals that agree or volunteer
to be the rep for each facility will collect the order forms that
you put out and collect the money. They then send all orders and
monies to you for the main order. Question!!! If, lets say, we have
twenty hats coming to NIO (Salem), will the manufacturer send just
those twenty hats to this facility or will they all be sent to you
or will someone have to pick them up and then be sent to each rep
    for whatever facility??????

Also, should the rep's be the ones to attempt to get the head count
for their own facility????? Mabey we should put a pointer at the
end of this file, write lock it and start a new one that will be
just for collecting inital order data. It might be easer for the
    rep's.

    What do you think?????

You've done a great job, thanks.

    Regards, John.

John, thanks for your input. We won't need people to act as reps
until after all the orders are in and the hats have arrived at
my doorstep. The order forms will be sent out via Vaxmail, and a
copy of the order form will also be posted in this note, so we
should be covered. Once anyone has received their order form, it
will be their responsibility to send the order via U.S. Mail to
me, with a check for the full amount. Once I have a check from every
serious buyer, I will place the order. I can't afford to do it any
    other way.

The company will send all hats to me, and I will then distribute
the hats to the various "reps" at the larger facilities within
driving distance of Chelmsford (where I am). The remaining hats
will be UPS'd to the people far away.

    Ed

P.S. John has offered to put together the Vaxmail distribution list
    	 for me - thanks John...

979.188exBTO::MORONGThu Mar 16 1989 16:4820

Since I am at one of the "far away" sites, I have a question.
How will the payments be decided??? I assume that you will have
to send the hats to me (BTW, I am volunteering to be the site
"distribution" person for Burlington VT) via UPS. Who pays for
the UPS charge??? If you find out how much it will cost to UPS
me the hats, the cost of the hats, and the number of hats coming
to VT, we (at BTO) should divide the cost of shipping between us,
and include that in the payment that we send to you. Or does it
come COD??? You may have already stated this, but I don't recall
    seeing it mentioned.

BTW, I still want one hat (and patch). I assume that they will
be the standard adjustable hats (big enough to fit a 7-5/8 hat size).

Would it be possible to publish the distribution list for the
hats in this note when it is finalized??? That way everybody could
be sure that their order was remembered/received.

Price will be finalized when the best estimate can be made on
how many we will have to ship UPS. Rather than try to charge those
in "far away" places seperately, the cost of shipping to them will
be factored in to the unit price for all hats. That way everybody
pays the same, and nobody misses out. I don't want to over or under
estimate the cost of shipping (*esp* under), so I'm waiting until
    I have that information.

979.231Order formes in the mail!!!SALEM::EASTERTue Mar 28 1989 17:425
Latest info is $7.50 per hat with extra patch! Ed Preston is putting
the order forms together now and they should be out in the next
    few days.

    Regards, John.
979.232UPDATECASV02::PRESTONBetter AI than none at allTue Mar 28 1989 17:4647
This little project has turned out to be not so little! I'm not
sure I knew what I was getting into when I agreed to do this, but
    it's mine now!

This is where we are at: the hats will all be ROYAL BLUE, with an
insignia on the front, and an identical patch included with each
hat. The reason for this is to accomodate those who want patches
as well as hats. The additional cost for the extra patch is
trivial, so it was decided to include one with each hat. It would
be too complicated to have people order X number of hats and Y number
of patches, since we have to specify the full amount in advance
to the hat company, then somehow deliver the hats to each person
who has ordered. It's *much* simpler to just include a patch with
each hat - in fact, it's the only way to do it, since we're not
*selling* them, we're *ordering* them as a group. Capiche?

The price will probably be $7.50 per hat..

Anyway... Everyone who has entered a reply in this note will be
receiving Vax mail containing an order form. The order form will
also be posted here for your convenience. Make a hard copy of the
order form, fill it out, and send it, with FULL PAYMENT to the address
on the order form. I must have money in hand before the hats can
be ordered, because I can't run the risk of having to personally
pay for ten or twenty extra hats, and I haven't factored in an
allowance for unwanted hats into the price, to keep it low. While
I don't want to have a bunch of extra hats, I also don't want a
bunch of extra $$ left over, either, because this is not a profit
    making venture.

Anyhow, my apologies to anyone who thinks this is taking too long.
If anyone has any ideas for speeding things up, I'm open, If anyone
wants to provide capital to finance 200+ hats up front, send it in!
    ..or if anyone wants to take over for me, I'm even open to that!! 8-}

Ok. This has taken a while, and it will take a while longer, because
of the way we have to do it, but, the price will be lowest this
way. Besides, I *do* have a few other priorities as well, not the
least of which is our beloved company and the tasks they have
so graciously seen fit to entrust me with! (and family and school
and...) Be patient! The hats will come! And they'll be worth the
    wait!!

    Your humble servant,

    Ed

Make it out to Edmund Preston (or Ed, but not Edward...)

Also, the order form has been slightly changed, due to a gracious
offer of help from John Easter. He will be receiving and compiling
the orders, so the "send to" address in the order form will be changed
to his home address. Once he has received the orders, logged them
and compiled them, he will forward the checks to me, so that I can
pay the hat company. This will help things to flow more smoothly,
and we will have our hats that much sooner. Thanks, John!!

The deadline hasn't been decided yet. If you send your order soon,
you will have no problem. We are waiting to finalize the artwork
for the emblem/patch. When that is done, the hats can be ordered.
We'll keep everyone informed, especially those who were sent order
forms but haven't responded by the time things begin to come together.

Remember, you haven't really ordered until you have sent the order
form by mail, WITH A CHECK. Anyone who sends an order, even if it's
in the mail when we place the order with the supplier, will get
    a hat.

When a deadline is necessary, it will be posted here, and probably
    mailed to everyone, too.

approval, order writing, advertisement, money collection, frustration with
now-less-responsive vendors (they've got you now, and they're all alike),
blown promises ("we're shipping tomorrow - well, the truck/machine/computer...
broke down, we'll ship tomorrow"), anxiety communicated from anxious recipients
("what? not ready YET?"), A..holes ("you call these hats? I coulda got these for

You earned MY respect and admiration. Thanks.

well i finaly got to do some fishing in alabama and it was pretty
good. i put my brand new hat on and off i went. took four fish in
an hour. the smallest one was 2 lbs and the largest one was four
lbs. the fishing down here is really different the water is always
brown and the depris is just real bad. i have been reading how lucky
everyone was getting buy wearing the hat so i took time off and
it really works. thanks alot guys for doing a great job on the hats.

I got mine on Friday. We went fishing on saturday. My friends both
caught fish and I didn't. I was depressed because after reading
all of these positive responses on the power of "the hat", I expected
to end my long dryspell (so long I'd be embarrassed to tell you
    how long).

I went out on Sunday. Nobody was hooking. As soon as the tide turned
around, wham! I hooked (and landed) a 13 lbs. humpy! Finally. I
was actualy considering going to the store to buy some salmon before
    that.

Thanks a lot! Great hat guys!

My father and brother are staying in our summer place on Lake
Champlain. A week or so ago they were going through a severe
dry spell and were unable to catch anything. As soon as they
got their hats they started pulling in fish including a 6+ pound
Northern (my brothers personal best)! I'm going to be trying
my hat out this weekend :-).

Thanks for all the work that went into designing/procuring the hats,
    Rich

Last sunday, my brother-in-law and I made our annual futile trek
to Pontoosuc for Tiger Muskie. I was sure the hat would cut down
the number of casts to follow ratio from 1000 to 1 and maybe even
result in a hookup and maybe, god forbid, put a legal one in the
    boat.

Yes, we got a follow without 1000 casts. Yes, my brother-in-law
hooked one. But, nooooooooooooo. The power of the hat was insufficent
when it came to landing that !@$%^&(*&%@$#. I guess the aura from
my head to his hands was too weak. But if the Muskie was responding
to the power of the hat, why was I not the one to hook the fish
and what exactly is the power of a leather cap with Harley Davidson
insignia. Perhaps Muskies are more soulmates of outlaw bikers than
    terminal anglers?!

On a more positive note, when I got tired of throwing big Daredevls
and Mepps and decided to let a shiner do some work for me, I caught
two of the biggest yellow perch I've ever seen on a jig & grub.
They were each 12" and fat.

So, who the Muskie hat? I'll trade you my yellow perch hat and
    a box full of grubs.

P.S. I still like the hat.

Just got back from holidays to find that my hats had been delivered
    the day after I left.

My son confirms the good luck. He says fishing at the camp has been
    great.

I'll test mine out this weekend.

    Great work and great hats.

When I placed the order with the hat company, I picked up some
extras, figuring there would be some stragglers and late-comers.
It turned out to be a good idea, since a few people did contact
    me wanting hats.

I still have a few left if anybody wants one. Contact me at
    KAHALA::PRESTON.

Due to the response to the previous note, I feel that I have to
say that the fairest method for handling this is first-come-first-
served, as in the first checks get the hats. Mail delays will not
    be counted.

A while back I was contacted by a few people who wanted hats but
never followed through. While I don't want anyone to be disappointed,
I feel that I have to handle it this way, since the number of
    remaining hats is very limited.

At the moment, most, if not all, of the remaining hats are spoken
for. Anyone else who wants one can let me know and I will hold their
name in case an order falls through.
