1012.0. "Northern Bass" by BOSHOG::VARLEY () Fri Mar 03 1989 14:29

I ordered some spinnerbaits from BassPro the other day, and was
told that several that I wanted (mostly "Vibra-Shafts and the single
diamond willow) were discontinued. So I decided to give Northern
bass a try. What a nice bunch of guys, and their prices aren't bad
    as well.
The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me to encourage
the growth of a place here in New England that stocks what we need
for our kind of fishing and that understands what works here, and
what doesn't. The guy I talked to (Billy) is a Bass fisherman, and
was real knowledgeable, so I did something I never have done before-
I told him to send me 6 spinnerbaits and pick out the colors that
his experience showed to be the best for around here. After all,
although bass 're bass, the best color for Rodman pool or Sam Rayburn
or Toledo Bend might not do squat around here. I also figgered he'd
appreciate my trust and give this some thought, where a larger
operation might just send me 6 baits they were havin' trouble sellin'
    - we'll see. To make a long story short, they were havin' a sale
on "All Star" rods, so there is a "Tennessee handle" spinning rod
    enroute along with the spinnerbaits....
Anyone else use these guys ? Am I sick, or what ?

Nope, your not sick at all...

I too like NBS, but do tend to use BPS some of the time becasue
    they are still often cheaper.

The fact that they are fisherman really helps. You call up Bass
Pro and it often appears your not talking to a fisherman. Barry
Hunt is the founder of NBS and Gary Clark (author of Clark's NH
Fishing Guide) recently became part owner. Both real nice guys.

A sale on all-stars huh? Hmmmm maybe I'll be taking a ride to
    Brentwood over the weekend...

At the expo they mentioned they were expanding their showroom, anyone
    know if it's done yet?

I know Billy personally, he is exactly what you mentioned. And he
will send you their "Most Productive" lures. The facility itself
is not all that big but there is 1 of everything they carry on the
wall to look at. I'm going up on Saturday 3/4 to see him and get
    some things I need.

I have been buying from them for the past two years. I visit the
showroom a couple a times a year. Great group of people, knowledgable
and make me feel they want to help answer any questions. I shop
around, but there prices are competitive on most items; especially
when you consider shipping. They have some good buys in the showroom
    too.

DONT be telling the Bandit this stuff. He is a sick person.
    He currently;
     - is on the denied parties list for furture catalogs from Cabelas
and BassPro, and a geat number of other places. NBS sent him a catalog.
     - is a charter member of Shoppers Anoymous - they have asked me
    to tell you.

Plus I think he may have passed this diease off to me. Ive been
6-7 times to the $2 lure table at Zylas. (like today at noon fer
instance.) Bomber lures....... all you want. If you aint been there
    yet, get there.

How far is NBS from Mass, say, from rt 495? I'd like to check the
place out sometime if it isn't too far away.

Northern Bass is located on Rte. 125 Brentwood,NH. You would get
off at the Plastow exit from 495 and follow 125 for quite a ways.
Just before NB is an intersection that has a flashing light, and
on your right hand side is a place called "Rivers Edge". About
100 yards further you take a right and then a quick left into the
driveway that has a chain of buildings. NB is the first one on the
left side, you will see a picture window and a doorway.

I was in Northern Bass yesterday pm and entrusted myself to Billy
for some new technology in lures. One portable shopping basket later
I was through. I didn't even look at the total on the slip... Lavender
Jack found the all time great chartreuse "Little N", my all time
favorite bass plug (No big deal, but probably 10 fish over 4lbs).
After a brief consultation, they took me out back, where the lures
go to spawn - it was like a candy store (which by now has considerably
less candy...). Time for a new box. This will be the year of new
lures for me, so I might as well start right. Anyone have a
recommendation on a Jig 'N Pig box also? The NB guys like the 5/16
blue/black Stanley jig with a #11 black pork frog.

Billy explained to me that the "pig meat" slows the jig's fall.
The 5/16 with pig falls just fast enough to suit the fishin' he
    does in NH, i expect.

Out of staters call 1 800 227-7032 (in case the "phone Police"
at your facility are on the prowl). Right now Northern Bass has
loads of Bill Norman Little N's on sale in bins in the front of
the shop. They are doubling their showroom size...
