918.0. "Abu Spinnerens anybody??" by CHIRPA::PARR (PSCAN-F-TOOUGLY, Scanned Image Too Ugly to Process) Wed Nov 23 1988 10:49

I'm down to my last coupla these lures so maybe someone out there
in notesland can help me. Way back when I used to fish the St.
Lawrence River I used various color/sizes of Abu Spinners. (Pike
seem to go crazy for these so. . .) Anyway, I haven't been able
to find them anywhere around the northern Mass/Southern NH area,
nor are they in the Bass Pro or Cabela catalog. There are many
imitations around but none seem to work as well. Has anyone seen
these anywhere recently or is Abu just making reels now??

    Thanx for any leads.
    Brian

918.1I'll check! Try C.P. Swing?USRCV1::FRASCHMon Nov 28 1988 17:2412
    Brian,

Let me check the local "Canandaigua Fishing Tackle" catalogue. The
ABU is/was a popular lure here in UNY for as long as I can remember.
Have you ever tried a "C.P.SWING" spinner? I find they will take
anything from Perch to Pike. They are somewhat like an ABU, but
    not as heavy.

Let me take a look and I'll get back to you.

    Don,

Appreciate your checking this out for me. Yes, I have tried the
C.P. Swing, but the Pickeral here in New Hamster prefer the Abu.
(Orange body with Black/Brass spinner for those interested)

918.3Arcane Lures Are My Life...BOSHOG::VARLEYTue Nov 29 1988 11:4115
I Used to live outside Syracuse, ansd I remember how tough it was
to get the ABU's (especially the white bodies with black spots),
or the "Little Wonder" spinners when Oneida Lake got hot in June.
Luhr Jensen makes a "Shyster" spinner which is as close to the
Spinnaren as you can get. I believe they purchased the rights for
it from the parent company that originally produced it - Glen L.
Evans. Anyway, only the line tie loop looks any different, and since
Jensen makes it, it should be easy to find. I've seen 'em everywhere.
You could also make them - Netcraft and Reed Tackle sell all the
    components, as do others.

    Ed,

I've gotten pickeral using the Abu both cast and retreive, and troll,
but trolling seems to work the best (at least at Monomonac). If
only I could convince them not to try and take my fingers off before
    I release them :^)

918.6ABU to GARCIA?MITCHELUSRCV1::FRASCHMon Dec 05 1988 13:4915
    Brian,

I checked at the Canandaigua Fishinf Tackle store over the weekend
and they don't carry ABU spinners anymore. The guy said they dropped
them about 4 years ago. He told me that ABU is owned by Garcia/Mitchel
and that if you got a Garcia catalogue, you could find the spinners.
He said they did still make them, but with the increase of Salmon
and Trout locally, demand for the ABU died off.

I'll keep my eyes open for them when I'm in the various tackle shops
locally, but it sounds like the Garcia catalogue is your best bet.

    Regards

    Don

Just happend to find your cry for help. It's no problem at all
getting them here in Sweden. Being a Pike ficher myself I know what
you are talking about. I have got my own boat in Stockholm archipelago
so I do quite a lot of fishing during summers (my wife loves it!??).
You can find ABU everywere here in Sweden and i will go to my dealer
this lunch and see if we can arrange something for you. Hang on
    out there.

Count me in if there's any chance of a group purchase.

I must be a real fisherman now: "Something new? Where??"

My wife: "You don't NEED any more FISHING STUFF!! You've got ENOUGH
    	     fishing stuff!"

    Me: "No such thing..!"

(I've already outgrown the Plano 727 tackle box I got for Christmas
    last year...)

Sorry, but my dealer was not interested to sell 'low walue' items
abroad - to much trouble whit customs and so on and on.

But i called ABU HQ here in Sweden and got the adresses they got
in the US. Most of them seems to me like sevicecenter so I'll give
you the HQ and salesoffice adress. If anybody is interested in the
other adresses pls let me know.

Seems like the same building to me. Nobody at ABU could tell me
if the had the spinners there or not, but I will give it another
try later and see if i can find that out. If anybody of you gets
    lucky, pls let me know.

This probably isn't appropriate as a reply here, but if anyone
needs to send me mail, send it to BHBVAX::PARR or GREEDO::PARR.
My disk (BHBVAX$DUA0:) is not mounted cluster-wide, hence the
problems if you send me mail using the cluster alias.

    Sorry for any inconvenience
