901.0. "Steelhead/Browns in Pulaski" by EBDBDA::GODFREY () Thu Oct 20 1988 21:32

                       < Steelhead Fishing >

I'm looking for some tips on steelhead fishing. I will be in the
Pulski area of NY the week before Thanksgiving. I plan on both
spin and flyfishing, and am looking for info on bait/lure/fly
selection/presentation, as well as the proper leader setup [for spinning
rod and flyrod]. Do the brown's run the same time as the steelhead,
and if the do, are the tactics the same?, any help would be appreciated.

    tight lines,
    Larry Godfrey

p.s. I just read an article in Flyfisherman about using the eggfly
[streamer nymph for any flyfishing purests] and was wondering if
    it was accurate.

There are a lot of notes on Steelhead, Browns and Pulaski scattered
throughout this file. The quickest way to find them is to use the
following format: DIR/TITLE=STEELHEAD (OR BROWN TROUT, OR PULASKI).
IT WILL TAKE AWHILE FOR THE SEARCH TO FINISH. If you'd like, give
me a call at DTN 234-4410; I'm a 7 year vet of the Pulaski fishery.
You might want to try Dan Castillo or Steve Valois - they're both
in the phone book. Dan is a Michigan Steelheader who's exceptionally
good and can help with tackle/techniques. Steve is a real hard core
Pulaski vet who probably has more success than anyone from Dec that
I've talked to, and has the pictures to prove it.
I'm always ready to talk fishing, and I know the area real well.
I can help you with what to bring, where to stay/eat etc. Jack Hagerty
on CGVAX2::Hagerty is also real knowledgeable on the area.

    Larry,
Another expert on Pulaski is Charlie Asay out of the Ithaca, NY
office. He introduced me to the Salmon River some 8 years ago and
he NEVER comes back empty. Steelies are his favorite!! I have never
fished for them this time of year. We usually go in late Feb, early
March. Be sure to check the local requirements for leader length,
location of split-shot, number and size of hooks, etc. The game
wardens are really tough on violators and you can't tell who is
and who isn't a warden. I'm sure Charlie is in the phone book!

    Larry,

I can't tell you much about the Pulaski area cuz I do all my
Steelheading in Michigan but any information you are looking for
in fishing them ironheads with I a fly I will be more than happy
to supply. As a matter of fact I will be in Michigan for Thanksgiving
and will be on my favorite steelhead stream (the Pere Marquette)
the day after for some explosive fall run Steelies. I have had good
success with the egg pattern you are referring to but must of my
steelies have been taken on a Spring Wiggler pattern. I tied a couple
up for the Bandit last year and am hoping he gives them a fair shake
this up and coming season. He won't be dissappointed. Drop me a
line. Always happy to talk Steelhead.
