889.0. "Salmon River Disaster ?" by PCCAD1::RICHARDJ (Bluegrass,Music Aged to Perfection) Thu Oct 06 1988 15:08

I heard from a guy here in Shrewsbury that the Salmon River in
Polaski N.Y. is in the middle of a disaster. The power company
in order to repair the Hydroelectric dam clossed of the water
flow, leaving the salmon river dry, right in the begining of the
salmon run. He said they showed dead salmon all over the place
and the N.Y. Fish and Game Department is outraged. The business
in the area is going to suffer enormously. The trying to catch
the salmon in the left over pools in an attempt to save the eggs
and fertilize them. Has anyone heard any news on this ? I hope
    its not true.

Thats not the word for it, I saw that news clip about a week or
2 ago they were showing hundreds of salmon just laying all over
the rocks, some looking for puddle to cool there faces,. it was
a sad sight to see. the most of the salmon they were showing were
3 to 4 ft. like they said there were disturbed people about this
screw up. the one who closed of the water supply should be hung
by his gill's, and forced to eat kiva suchee' i'm susprise chronical
or pm magazine didnt run a segment of it.

I'm wondering if the N.Y officials are trying to keep it quiet in
order to minimize the economic impact to the business community?

    Jim,
I talked with somebody up there a couple of weeks ago
and this is the story I got. The river wasn't actually the
salmon river, it was the Oswego river, which is near the
salmon river. The work on the damn was to install some kind
of ladder system for the salmon. The water was down for a limited
time and did kill off a substantial amount of fish in the river
at that time, but there is a steady stream of fish entering the
river from lake Ontario from late august to november. The fish
do not reproduce naturally in the river. They lay their eggs and
die, but the eggs never mature because of improper conditions.
All the fish in the area are raised in a hatchery, and the hatchery
doesn't even start the egg stripping operation until the middle
of october. The report I got was that the amount of Salmon in the
river was back to normal within several days, and now they have
a chance to make it much further up the river which opens up lots
of new oppurtunities for the anglers...so, as tragic as it was,
it really has had no detrimental effect, and in reallity will be
a big boost for the areas economy. I know somebody's going to say
why didn't they do it at another time of year, but there are
runs of steelhead and brown trout spaced out over other parts of
the year, each with there dedicated band of followers who would
be equally disturbed if it happened during that time of year, so
it just goes to show sometimes you just can't win...

889.4NO PROBLEM, MARTY IS RIGHT !!!USRCV1::FRASCHFri Oct 07 1988 14:2913
Marty is absolutly right!!! It was the Oswego River, NOT the Salmon
River. The shut down was actually timed to minimize the impact on
a fish kill that they knew would happen. It was done early in the
salmon run before the major part of the run. A friend of mine is a
DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) Marine Biologist for
the area and totally supported what Marty said. The only problem
was the smell and the utility company had to deal with that and
    do the clean up.
The project will actually result in a significantly larger number
of Salmon running and spawning in the Oswego River therefore increasing
    the Ontario Salmon population.

889.7I was there then.DR::HAIGHMon Oct 10 1988 19:3616
I was fishing there the day this happened.

I was with another guy from arround here and we were staying with
a friend near Osweago. There were dead fish all over the place.

The friend from up there was here this weekend and told us the story.

The electrictity company dumped thousands of dead fish into Ontario.,
    Most without saving the eggs.

The newspaper article on this can be obtained if requested.

(Yes we each did catch a salmon.)
