250.1Will any one ADMIT it???MR4DEC::FBUTLERWed Jan 20 1993 11:509
    I don't know anyone who's tried one. Seems like whenever you talk to
    someone about them, it's the kind of thing that everyone wants to try,
    but no one wants to admit it...If I could buy ONE, I would probably
    give it a try (I need all the help I can get...) but in the States,
    $30 for the kit the advertise on the shows is a bit rich for me...

250.2Might try the bass conferenceGERBIL::DUPONTWed Jan 20 1993 11:528

     As I recall there was a discussion in the
    Bass fishing notes file about these. As I
    recall the comments weren't very positive.
    Apparently a very difficult lure to use...

250.3Where's the Bass.....conferenceAYOV11::ATODMANWed Jan 20 1993 12:3314

    They said in the half hour long advert that it could be used in any
    kind of water but when I saw it in use, it was always in static
    water. I don't think it would do well in flowing water (i.e river), but
    if you were in a boat on a Loch, I think it would be easy enough to use.

    I would be using it for trout (Brown, Rainbow and Sea) and salmon. My
    most productive lure last year was a No. 2 Gold Mepp with Red Spots.
    Do you get Mepps in the States..?

    Do you know what Node the Bass conference is situated ?

    The lure does work, but don't waste your money on the kits rather buy
    what you think you would like to use. My brother fished with me last
    year using this lure. It does drop with a very interesting motion and
    you can lift it and make it drop back to the same place. He used it to
    nudge a bass we could see on the edge of a weed bank. He cast it to it
    and kept lifting and dropping it back until the bass got pissed enough
    to hit it. it was a small bass. After trying it for three days he
    said it was an interesting lure, but very specialized, but not good
    enough to keep it tied to a rod. In other words he would attach it
    only as a desperate measure to catch a fish he could see thats not
    hitting anything else.

250.6Tried & discardedRUNTUF::HUTCHINSONWed Jan 20 1993 15:0810
    Never seen the ad, but my father did, was impressed, and, knowing I fish
    so much, bought a kit that he gave to me. I did catch fish with the
    lures, but didn't find them particularly productive - more of a gimmick
    kind of fishing, not for general use. I do not usually carry them with
    me in the canoe. Guess I'm in accord with the other replies in this
    string. I'd say stick with the Mepps. Yes, we do use them here also.
    Do you use "swimmers" in those fiords (e.g. Rapala)? Chrome/bronze
    spoons?  What's the forage?

250.7Not worth $5/lureKOLFAX::WHITMANAcid Rain Burns my BassWed Jan 20 1993 19:2531
  I've had the "FLYING LURE" for about 4 years. I believe that if someone were
to practice with it enough you might be able to get it to handle like the Ad
claims. I wouldn't waste tackle box space with more than one or 2 of the
things. 16 lures is a waste of money. 35 pounds is what about $70 or so, that's
almost $5/lure (pretty steep by US standards.) I noticed BPS Spring Catalog
had them advertised.

It's just a big tube lure like a Fat Gitzit or a Tora Tube with a flat profile
and the eyelet where you tie on a little aft of center (i.e. the tenticles
point toward you, not away from you).

   The lure seems behave as advertised in that once thrown it angles in the
direction the weighted end of the lure is pointing. The difficulty lies in
getting the lure to hit the water with the weighted end pointing away from you.
When I pitch or flip the lure out invariably it is spinning a little which
means it could be pointed in any direction when it contacts the water. If it's
pointing back at me, then the lure works its way back to me, when my reason for
using it in the first place was to work its way under the dock, or branches, or
boats, or whatever was the target structure. Once it's on the bottom, I could
pick it up and the lure would work away from me but once the angle of the lift
is small enough (the closer lure is and the longer your rod is the greater the
angle of lift) I couldn't get the lure to actually take line off the spool. It
would take up most of the slack created during the lift, but would not work
itself farther away than where it started.

  As has been said in the previous 2 or three replies, it's a cute little lure
to be used in desparation or when sight hunting, but not worth having one tied
to a rod all the time.

Also, the flying lure will cause considerable line twist if retrieved at
moderate speeds. I've tried them and have yet to catch anything with it.
I know others that have, but it is a specialized lure and must be worked
properly. As Walt said, it's difficult to control the direction it will
"fly" when it hits the water. I've managed to learn how to control that
by tightening up on the line a little just as it enters the water. That
makes the lure straighten out such that it will glide directly away from
you.

Nice concept ... needs improvement. BTW...they also make a spinner bait
that does the same thing.

250.9It will work, but it ain't easyDEMING::MATTSONThu Jan 21 1993 11:2015
    	I second what Joe and Al already said. It's not the type of lure
    that you buy, tie on, cast it out, and work it back however you feel.
    The thing will twist like you read about.

    	You've got to play with this lure and watch it for a while to
    appreciate what it can do and how it does what it does. I tend to
    agree with others in that it's a specialty bait used best in short
    casting situations. I did catch a decent size bass the 1st time I
    tried it though, but I think it was the location not the lure. I
    can't wait to try it on site fishing for bedding bass, in my opinion
    this is where it will really shine.

    Spag's has them for about $5.00 a pack of around 5 I think. Didn't pay
    too much attention to it. I'll check on the details soon. I quess when
    you buy from the TV advert, you're paying for the ad and the video to
    show you how to fish.

    I saw them at the FAIR last night (see note 58) and surprisingly,
    the were $34.95, which surprised me based on their prices of other
    things...

    at $5, i might give 'em a try, but i wouldn't go over that...

250.141 outlet in Scotland...?AYOV11::ATODMANThu Jan 21 1993 13:5312

    In Scotland, I don't think we can purchase these lures anywhere apart
    from these TV adverts. I have never saw them in any of the fishing
    magazines or in any of my local fishing tackle shops.

    In other words, they have us by the short and curlies...If we don't pay
    the price they are asking, we will have to do without....

250.15I can relate to that.MPGS::MASSICOTTEThu Jan 21 1993 14:5311

    While on vacation this past summer we were in Edinbrough and we passed
    a sporting goods store which was closed but looking at the displays
    in the window kind of shocked me. If memory serves, a Rapala #7CDS
    was 7 pounds+. Remarked to the wife "No wonder most everyone here
    is into fly fishing. They can make thier own." :^) But then again
    if the exchange rate was $1.00 = 2 pounds, I probably wouldn't have
    said a thing. All relative.. Right?

    when the 30 min commercial came out, all the local store's sold out
    and they we're almost irreplacable , they said they had them on there
    shelves for yrs until that commercial came out, then they became one of
    the hottest seller's,

    I seen them at the fair for 24.99 or so, but for that cash, i can load
    up on thing's i use/loose on a regular basis, MMatt had a good point
    though on the bedding bass, i think thats when they could be critical,
    but I dont think i'll be running out looking for them, the fair on rte 20
    has a good stockpile of them the last i saw, I do like however BP sells
    them seperate so you dont have to PAY for the fancy case either,

    well my 1Cent anyway.

250.18Every lure has it's applicatonSOFBAS::SULLIVANThu Jan 21 1993 16:3221
 Most of us that fish with artificials, and escpecially
some of us that make money fishing know that every lure
has it's own application and time for use.
 I have them in my box. I don't use them much but, they
are great in the spring under docks looking for those
spawning fish. They are also good in rivers where there
are undercutting banks.
 Although I have not caught that many fish with them,
they do have a use. And in those times when $$$ is on
the line we like to have all the options. It all goes
into time of use. I very rarely through a crankbait
therfore I don't catch many fish on crankbaits... does
this mean crankbaits are ineffective, don't tell the 150
that are in my box that...

250.19BPS International salesKOLFAX::WHITMANAcid Rain Burns my BassThu Jan 21 1993 18:4018
Arnie,

      Bass Pro Shops International Phone # is 417-883-4960. I just spoke with
a lady named Cindy. The woman who handles the international sales (not Cindy)
is there from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm in the Central timezone (6 hours behind GMT, I
think).

      Cindy said they can accept VISA or MasterCard credit cards if you have
one. There are other means of payment, but Credit Cards were the easiest to
explain, I guess. They will provide language translation if neccessary (not in
this case.) Shipping can be handled a couple ways and will depend on cost and
weight of the product. Parcel post takes 6 - 12 weeks (don't ask me why) and
DHL takes 10 working days.

      The shipping charges may make your TV offer look better and better, but
give them a call and see what they have to say...

    Thanks for the info Al, I'll give them a try later on...!

    Has anyone tried the lure when fishing for Salmon or Wild Trout ? In
    the advert (saw it again last night), they are using the lure in stocked
    waters. Is this why it looks so productive ?

    		I have a few of them in green and blue. I can't say I have
    	ever caught anything on one but the action is as advertised. You
    	can get them "under 5 bucks" at any "MVP SPORTS" store in large
    	and small sizes.. We will moste likely try them in still
    	ponds this year. Last year we only used e'm on stained lakes and
