In 55.7 Ken Pappas asked about local fishing magazines.

I haven't found any local ones, besides fin and feather which seems to
    come and go.

The subscriptions that I maintain, listed by preference, are:

    In-Fisherman
    BASSmasters
    Bassin' Times (the BASS Newspaper)

In the past I've had bassin, fishing facts, outdoor life, field and
stream, fin and feathers - and probably a couple others that I've
    forgotten...

BASSmasters magazine subscription comes with your membership to BASS.
Bassin' Times comes with your membership in a BASS affiliated club,
    but is available separately.

The last year or so I haven't even been able to keep up with the 3 that
I recieve. But I catalog the articles online, which makes a great
    reference library.

I have multi-year subscriptions to SaltWater Sportsman, Sportfishing and
the NAFC Magazine.

Of the three, SWS is probably my favorite. It has the most articles and
includes a section of "local" stuff every month. My biggest criticism of
the magazine is that it tends to do the advertisement coverage maximizing
scheme of chopping up articles so you have to go looking for the rest of it.
Other than that it's a great magazine.

Sportfishing is a great magazine. The articles are fewer but often go into
more detail. My complaint with this magazine is the fact that they focus almost
entirely on glamour species (which is out of the price range of most of us
working stiffs.) But the articles are excellent.

The NAFC magazine is reasonably good. It is more varied than these other two
since it deals with both salt and fresh water. The articles are too short
for my tastes; usually only a single page long (the regular columns, at least.)
They do have feature articles that are longer (in all fairness.)

I just recently started a subscription to The Fisherman.

Great magazine if your into saltwater fishing, either surfcasting or
from a small boat. They publish local versions in different parts of the
country. The only complaint with the New England version is that it is
published in Conneticut and so tends to concentrate on Conn., R.I. and
Long Island Sound - not exclusively, but enough to be annoying to a
    Mass. fisherman like myself.

The Fisherman is published weekly - I haven't checked the accuracy of
    thier fishfinder yet!

    				Robert.

I also subscribe to The Fisherman (NE edition) for the past 4 years. I
like the magazine a lot and look forward to it every week. It is easy
to read and has short articles 1-2 pgs. A lot of info on how to do it,
surf, boat, make your own rigs, etc.

At mentioned in another note, take the fishing reports with a grain of
salt. Remember the report are entered by local tackle shops whose
interest is selling stuff. Good reports get you in there and buying
bait or the latest 'killer' lure. However, I have compared the local
reports to my experiences in the same period of time and have found
them to be pretty accurate. With bluefish it's a here today gone
    tommorow situation anyways.

The only problem that I have is the reports are from the previous
weekend (Sunday) and I don't get the mag until weds or thursday.

The fishing reports encompass the entire NE coast so you can see a
picture forming in the spring and fall and try and predict when the
fish will be in your area. Follow the migrations up and down the
    coast.

Would it be possible for someone to enter the magazines by name and how
to order information here, it would be helpful

Sure, I'll post the info on In-Fisherman and BASSmasters this evening
or tomorrow (unless someone else does it first).

59.7Order the FishermanELWOOD::CARLINno victims; only volunteersThu Sep 12 1991 16:5916
Easiest way to order the Fisherman is to use the 800
number. 1-800-826-3727 I've even used this to change
my address.

I find the Fisherman to be a decent magazine. I've been
subscribing to it for over 10 years and am surprised at
how little the cost has gone up. Some of the reports, as
has been mentioned, seem to be a bit exagerated, but
nobody's perfect. The thing I don't like is the (obvious)
ads in a couple of them. For instance, it seems like
the Martha's Vineyard reports are just an ad for "Spof'"
Other than that, the articles are great. I have a custom
rod I built using their series of articles from a few
years back.

59.8pointer to IN-Fisherman and BASSmastersDONMAC::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerFri Sep 13 1991 14:3111
    In-Fisherman: $13.97 for 1 year.
    1-800-228-1505 or In-Fisherman PO Box 999, Brainerd, MN, 56401-9989

BASSmasters: $15 for 1 year (membership in BASS)
BASS, PO Box 17900, Montgomery, AL, 36141
BASS has an 800 number as well, but I couldn't locate it in the mag.
If you watch TNN on Sundays at 1pm or 10pm you'll see the show with the
    ad and 800 number.

59.9Infisherman is more general fishing than BassDELNI::OTAFri Sep 13 1991 15:3011
I used to suscribe to In-Fiherman but chose not renew it this year.
The reason is two fold: I found more articles on Walleye, Trout etc
and less on Bass. The ones on Bass such as the indepth reviews on
Plastic Worms, Frogs etc were more like advertisements rather than how
to effectively use them. If your a dedicated Bass fisherman, I would
recommend you buy a couple of the magazines off the stands to see if
the material is what you want first before suscribing to the magazine.
Bassmasters on the other hand is an excellant mag and I endorse that
    one whole heartedly.

59.10MLTVAX::LUCIAHere, fishy, fishy...Mon Sep 16 1991 20:0416
I've been having doubts about the usefulness of BASSmaster lately. It
seems that all their articles have about the same contents. Creek
Channels, road beds, etc. That's great for the reservoir country
anglers, but I find them seriously lacking in natural lake (i.e., what
we all fish) techniques and tips. Maybe it's the fact that I've
more-or-less gone exclusively saltwater. Maybe not. At least
In-Fisherman is a north-country publication. They have real scientific
information to hand out. I don't know if there references to all
tackle companies who make the lures they talk about is "a giant add" or
just their way of contributing thorough information.

I just got my new issue of Tackle Test in, which reminds me that I didn't
mention that before. Tackle test is simply awesome; real live fishermen with
no axe to grind trying out tackle and giving their impressions. They take
NO commercial advertising. Very worthwhile, but costly! $48/year (I got mine
for $24/yr in a special offer.)

I keep forgetting to put in the stuff for my other mags, but here is the
information for SWS:

do you think so ray? i was thinking of getting some rings made up
from the underground?? could i interest you in a 900.00 ring for
    only 14.95?

Also, i'm wondering what there lifetime membership means, who's
lifetime? fishing with some of you guys could cut me short? and maybe
i should stick with the annual renewal.

sounds like thats one thumbs down to me on the lifetime membership.
thanx for the feedback, i believe the belt buckle can also be used
    as a dipsy diver.

In the mail the other day, I got a membership ("SEND NO MONEY, JUST MAIL YOUR
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT...") from North American Fishing Club. They offer "field test"
benefits in which you can keep the equipment you test, etc.

Anyone know anything about this organization? Where did they get my name?

Curious,
Tim

Yep. Probably got you name from any fishing mailing list, Field
and Stream, Pro Bass, Sports A Field, etc.

	>>"SEND NO MONEY, JUST MAIL YOUR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT...")

Costs $14-$16 a year. Get a magazine, etc.

What's with the "field test" business? They are not likely to send me Penn

they send out for "field test"?

Thanks,

I am looking for an article in 'The Fisherman'. It goes way back to
1988. The article is called "The Merrimack PROFILE of a River" I was
given a copy of Part I last year by someone. I would like to get a copy
of Part II. Part I was in the volume published on May 12,1988. If
anyone has back issues of this magazine I would appreciate it if you
could find part II of this article for me. It was written by Pete
    Koutrakis.

March........

I called F&S 2 Park Ave. New York N.Y. (1-800-227-2224) and spoke with Aldora

me a courtesy copy of Eastern F&S for March but she took my change of address

It was nice - all the people I spoke with - receptionist etc. - were courteous
and efficient - no run-a-round....... This is "Times Mirror" publishing.....
