I hope there is not already a topic on this!

Anyway I am not sure if anyone south of me have heard
this one yet but I am sure most of Canada has heard
this by now. Just the past weekend there was a fairly
big icefishing derby going on at Lake Simcoe just north
of Toronto. There was a major crack that developed through
the ice while the tournament was being held. The crack looked
more like a tanker went through. It was approximatly 100 metres
wide and about 16-19 kilometres long. Needles to say there were
several hundred people stranded on the ice along with there
vehicles. This is when the rescue was called in.
The thing is that the majority of the people that were fishing
did not want to leave. They told the rescue people that they
were staying till atleast Monday in there ice shacks. Reason
being that there was a fish tagged and worth 25,000 dollars
if caught. They figured that after the crack froze over again
that they would just drive back accross.
Now there was a few individuals that were rescued and after that
they headed back out on the ice. This is when there van went
through and they had to be rescued a second time. Now I don't
believe that there were any deaths, just a few injuries.
This rescue cost the taxpayers aproximatly just over a half of
a million dollars. Now the Goverment wants to add a additional
fee on to our hunting and fishing cards. Which would be a search
and rescue fee. I believe the Ministry is not behind the Gov.
on this one. I believe we pay enough in taxes for fishing and
hunting already plus the money we spend on the things we need
to just enjoy these sports. I am not trying to kill the search
and rescue, but I just believe that these kind of things should
be in place regadless. I am sure that the taxpayer pays out for
this service weather they are doing a rescue or not.

I read about the fishing derby in Canada, and the rescue, and the
refusals to leave, and the return of some who had been rescued before...
All, IMO, because of greed ($25,000); but that's just my opinion.

Here in Colorado, S&R fees have been imposed for quite sometime....25
cents on every license...IMO, well worth the dough....

Yeh I guess .25 cents is not much.
I've heard that ours could go to
$1 or so extra per licence.

In NH, there was some talk of the person being rescued being liable
for the rescue fees. Seeing as how this can run into the thousands of
dollars, it's probably not a realistic funds recovery strategy.

I for one would be in favor of a minimum fee on those rescued. Around
$500 per person. Reason being the people being rescued usually put
themselves in jeapordy either directly or indirectly. Either they are
inexperienced or risk takers. If you go hiking and know there is bad
weather coming or can't read a compass, then stay out of the woods.
I for one have gone out on Winni on some bad days and question my
decision. Generally speaking people rescued are at fault. Why should
all the money come from a general fund, and why should all
    sportsmen/women pay the till.

Hey, Don...

We question your decisions ALL THE TIME and WE KNOW that you
can't read a compass in ANY type of weather!

Anyone who goes out with you is really in jeapordy...BIG TIME! ;>)

that's why Colo has a .25 cent fee on every license...to offset the
cost of the rescue. I believe it used to be optional, but if you didn't
pay a quarter and got lost, you WERE respnsible for the rescue fee. I,
like most, don't like the continual increase in fees for outsdoorsmen,
but a quarter beats 5 bucks, IMO, for a fee.

socialism at its best... From each according to their ability. To each
according to their need.

Make the population as a whole pay for the lack of
responsibility of the few. If they are your relatives, then you can help them
pay for the rescue effort.

Everything is life is a choice. If you get your thrills by hiking in the
back country, then you must accept the responsibility for preparing for the
associated dangers AND the expense for any rescue effort that you may require.

< I take it you own no insurance of any kind?

On the contrary, insurance is an important part of being prepared and
taking responsibility. The insurance companies offer this service so they can
make a profit, not for the benefit of its policy holders. It's a business.

Where my beef comes is when the government taps everyone for the benefit
of a few. We all pay taxes for the benefit of the masses. That's fine I can
accept that, but when they pick my pocket, without my consent, for the benefit
of a few people who should be responsible for the consequences of their own,
voluntary actions, I draw the line. That's "Big Brother" at work.

yer right...and if you choose not to pay a extra quarter on your
fishing and hunting license for S-n-R efforts in
Colorado, you choose not to hunt or fish. And that's fine with me, too
many out-of-staters on the waters and in the woods anyways. %^)

I find that the 50 cents I pay in Colorado for S-N-R is just like
insurance, if they need to come drag me a@@ out of the woods its paid
for. If you get lost/hurt here without having gotten a license and
they have to fine and haul you out, by law they should be charging you
the full cost. Now weather they charge or not is another story.

Not to throw more logs on the fire but, it seems to me that the
sportsmen are picking up the SNR fee's for everyone. Do lost hikers
    have to pay these fee's? Skier's? Boater's? camper's? I realize people
get lost and I dont have a problem with an extra 50 cents or so but I
do have a problem with the sportsmen being left to pick up the tab
    for everyone.

Right on Walt, I agree with you 100%.
You sure hit the bullseye there.
These are definite issues that should
    be addressed.

There was an article in the paper here a couple of years ago that did
say sportmen were picking up the tab for everyone, I don't know if that
has changed or if remains the same. I'm not real happy about picking up
the charges, but on the other hand I don't want anyone to be left to
fend for themselves and not make it out of the woods alive or unhurt.
