109.0. "Snowball cod trip" by LEVERS::SWEET () Tue Dec 31 1991 17:37

    A good friend, Jim Walsh, is Captain of the party boat "Sea Wife", it is
    a 64 foot twin diesel. He is going to run a couple of cod trips
    on Feb 2 and 16 from Lynn MA where he has the boat for the
    winter. Jimmy taught me most of what I know about cod fishing and
    works hard to keep folks happy.

    The trip will be $29 a head plus a couple of bucks for rod/reel
    if you don't have your own. If you think you are interested in
    a mid winter cod run post a reply here and as the time
    nears I will get the details.

    I'm interested - if the weather is reasonable. No experience with
    ocean bottom-fishing. Will need to rent equipment.

    It will help me get through these dark months until I can surf-cast
    again.

    Will watch this note for info.

109.6The PlanLEVERS::SWEETWed Jan 15 1992 14:4731

Ok, folks....I spoke with Jim and here's the story. I have had a very
positive response to the cod trip (on the order of 12-15 folks).
Jim has 28 confirmed reservations for his Feb 2nd trip so he
suggested we set a up trip for Feb 9th that would give us all more
room ect...

So here is the plan:

When: Feb 9th, 7AM-4PM.
Where: Lynn Mass. Boat leaves from Seaport Landing. This is on the Lynnway
       (RT 1A). It is right before the Nahant causeway as you head north.
Cost: $29 and a $3 rod rental. Clam bait is free.
Boat: Sea Wife 64 foot, wood hull, twin diesel , heated cabin, electronics....

Details: If the weather is good we will be fishing Stellwagon Bank. If the
         the weather is too bumpy we would fish inside (off the North shore).

         A $10 deposit is required. This is to really gaurentee people
         are going to wake up and actually go. If the trip is cancelled
         due to bad weather you get your $10 back or you can apply it
         towards a later trip with Jim. It's OK Jim if I act as
         middleman on the deposits so send me mail if you are ready
         to commit and we can work out the $ details.

So as they say...$$ talks and cow chips walks.

	I have a couple of questions regarding this fishing trip,
	and I'm sure some others may be thinking the same:

	Would the trip still happen with:
		High wind? Extreme cold? Rain? Snow?

	Just thought I'd ask because I've never fished on the ocean in
	the middle of winter.

	Thanks

109.8Common sense appliesLEVERS::SWEETMon Jan 20 1992 14:4111
    Ken,

       The trip will happen if the weather is reasonable. To mean
    that would mean not more than 2-4 foot seas and temps near
    freezing or above. Heavy rain or snow would be bad news this
    time of year. By friday that week we should have a good handle
    on whether any storms are due for Sunday. If the trip is called
    off due to weather the deposit is refundable or transferable to
    another trip.

Bruce,

It would help if there was some way of finding out if the trip was
cancelled before leaving the house. I don't know about others, but it will
take me an hour and a half to reach Lynn.

So if I could call someone before actually leaving the house to check on
the current the trip status, it could save me three hours of needless
travel time if it was cancelled.

Normally I wouldn't care, but this time of the year the weather is more
often bad anyway.

Will there be a number to call?

re: <<< Note 109.9 by LEDDEV::DEMBA >>>

	Not a bad idea, given the time of year. If I decide to go,
	and it's looking better with the conditions of "near freezing/
	no precipitation/bearable wind" ;-), it would take me 1.5 hours
	too. Sure would be a bummer to have it cancelled and not know
	it till you get there.

109.11We are on.....LEVERS::SWEETTue Jan 21 1992 11:5714
    Update:

    I have 16 deposits in hand. I spoke with Jim and trip is definitly
    on weather permiting. We talked weather and to him the biggest factor is
    wind (I agree). 10-20knots any direction we go. 15-25 southwest
    we go, out of the north or east we stay home. I will touch base
    with him friday before and saturday if necessary and pass the word
    based on the weather forcast. I have fished the ocean long enough
    to know that there are no gaurentees one way of the other, there
    are days when I went and should not have and days when I kicked
    my self all day for not going when the predicted winds never came.

109.12Marine ForecastGEMVAX::JOHNHCTue Jan 21 1992 12:179
    FWIW
    You can always call the Marine Forecast just before leaving the house.
    If they say that there are Small Craft Warnings or Advisories, chances
    are good that the trip will be cancelled. That, at any rate, is my
    experience with lobstermen who have always had a really good economic
    incentive to take us out. The Marine Forecast will also tell you what
    the expected seas are. The boat captain will probably make his decision
    on the trip based on the forecast more than on what he or she sees
    looking out the window.
109.13MLTVAX::LUCIAHere, fishy, fishy...Tue Jan 21 1992 15:446
    The marine forecast is not always to be trusted, especially if you
    intend to fish inside. I've seen Salem Sound dead flat with small
    craft, 4-8' seas stated on the marine forecast.

109.16Update - looking goodLEVERS::SWEETMon Jan 27 1992 15:5315
    The turnout for this trip has been tremendous. I have something
    on the order of 30 deposits at this point. I talked with Jim last
    week and we are basically a charter (instead of an open boat) at this
    point. I will take an accurate head/cash count tonight. We can go
    up to about 32 folks. I will also post a list here of who's attending.

    There will be a galley on board serving burgers and dogs. Beer will
    be for sale. You can bring your own on the order of 2-3 beers
    a person, remember we are fishing not drinking.

    Keep your fingers crossed for good weather.

    Bruce....because we will be looking for the SEAPORT landing around
    6-6:30 am..it will still be pretty dark out. For those of us not
    familar with this area..can we have a few more descriptors on
    how to get to SEAPORT LANDING. Miles from major turn offs....land marks
    like Mc Donalds , gas stations...etc always helps....as well as
    what color the SEAWIFE is and where she is located....

    Here's how to find it:

    From the North:

    1A South into Lynn
    Go past the Nahant Causeway
    Make a U-turn at Pizza Hut & Robert Robert's Waterbed Warehouse, both
    on your right.  (continue below)

    From the South:

    1A North into Lynn
    Go past Pizza Hut & Robert Robter's Waterbed Warehouse

    Continued:

    Just past the Uhaul, bear right onto Caroll Parkway
    Turn right after Lynn Heritage State Park/Waterfront into
    SEAPORT LANDING

    I don't know about parking, but I think I'll park in the park.
    Go down the road that you turned into from Caroll Parkway to the end
    and hang a left. You'll see the Sea Wife. Its 65', wood, dark blue
    and offwhite/beige.

    Whats the best way to get from 128 North bound to RT 1A?
109.20UpdateLEVERS::SWEETMon Feb 03 1992 14:3513
    You take 128 to 129 to lynn. Eventually 129 will get you to the
    shoreline, can't remember the exact details.

    I talked with Jim friday, we are all set for Sunday. We agreed
    that it did not look he would be doing a trip yesterday (2/1).
    Lets keep our fingers crossed another storm does not camp out
    over the gulf of maine this weekend. I have a total of 31
    hardy souls ready to go if the weather cooperates.
    Jim will make a go/no go decision after the 3pm marine
    forcast on saturday. You can call me after 4pm to get the word
    if it looks questionable. I'll give my best guess on friday.

    They did not go last week.

    I am not optimistic about sunday for us. The low comming
    up the coast is going to build the seas tonight and tomorrow.
    My experience says it will still be rolling on sunday.

    If we get lucky it will turn east and get far enough away to let
    us get out.

109.25Reschedule....LEVERS::SWEETMon Feb 10 1992 14:3910
    The trip was called off sunday due to the high winds. We can
    reschedule the trip for either 2/23 or 3/1. My preference is the
    23rd but those that could not make the 23rd could go on the 1st if
    Jim runs an open boat trip (which he likely will). If you don't/can't
    make it either of those dates I will give you your $10 back.

    Please send me mail ASAP as to your intentions. I would like to get
    back to Jim mid week.

109.27Summary...let's go spring!LEVERS::SWEETMon Feb 24 1992 12:029
    We made it out yesterday. The weather was great, seas were flat
    calm in the morning a then a light breeze out of the n/w brought up
    a small chop, temp about 40 and some filtered sunshine. The fishing
    was somewhat disapointing but most folks had 2-4 fish and the pool
    was split between a couple of 10lbers.

    Overall a great way to break the winter dulldrooms.

    We did not go far, fished around the area where the DG buoy used to
    be off marble head and then out near the 101. I am not completly
    surprised by your report, I think the commercial fishing may really
    show the toll it has taken on the cod this year, I hope I am
    wrong.

    btw the water depths were from 70-140ft
