145.0. "Central Mass River Access" by MCIS5::GOODENOW () Fri Mar 20 1992 18:55

    I live in Northboro and have a canoe. Generally I fish local
    ponds in the Westboro, Boylston, Hopkinton, Marlboro area.

    I'd like to learn more about local rivers, where to get access to
    them for my boat and 'hot spots'. Say, within 15 miles of MRO.

    Thanks.

    Are any fish in the Assabet eatable? I understand trout are being
    dumped in.

    	no. really, dont eat anything from that river! I don't think they
    have stocked trout in the Assabet since the early 70s.

    I catch plenty of bass with open sores on them in the river - its a
    real mess.

    Directly from the mouth of an EPA contact:

    "I really don't understand why they don't post `no fishing' signs all
    along the SUASCO watershed. The whole thing is poisoned. There's no
    excuse except a lack of money, but newspaper articles don't cost
    anything."

    This was said to me last Saturday just before we entered the Concord
    River in a search for 55-gallon drums full of toxic waste. "SUASCO"
    stands for "Sudbury-Assabet-Concord."

    Scary...I see people catching and KEEPING TO EAT stuff out of the
    assabet in maynard near the stow golf course. (catfish..and they scrape
    the bottom.)

    Yeah, it's not a pretty thought. The cause of the disease they get will
    probably never be discovered, either.

    The amount of illegal dumping is truly mind boggling. In our survey of
    the Concord around Minuteman National Park, we came across 6 barrels
    that had long since leaked their contents. Five of the seven divers
    reported seeing huge beds of dead mussels. The EPA contact asked us to
    return later to mark the spots of the mussel kills so they can test the
    sediment in those areas.

    My serious suggestion to all of you regarding SUASCO is "don't drink
    the water, and don't eat the fish."

145.9Trout dump in Assabet [???]MCIS5::GOODENOWThu Mar 26 1992 01:013
    A couple of avid Northboro fishing friends swear they saw the state
    dumping trout in last year and I'm told that the Assabet is in
    the plan for this year as well.
145.10Most likelyGEMVAX::JOHNHCThu Mar 26 1992 01:2914
    Yeah, they drop trout in there. Keep in mind that F&W is a different
    organization from the EPA and that F&W is interested in keeping
    license-buying anglers happy rather than anything else. The trout that
    aren't caught will perish.

    I quit counting trout corpses on the bottom a long time ago, right
    after I mentioned a *lot* of trout corpses on the bottom of the
    Shawsheen River to one of the F&W guys in Acton. "Yeah, well, they
    can't catch them *all*" was the response I got.

    Put it in a new perspective for me.

    OK, much of this river system is a stinker. My concern is the
    Northboro/Hudson bit of the Assabet. What's its quality? Folks
    hereabouts tell me about dramatic improvement.
145.12There are some very pretty spots on the river, but...GNPIKE::NICOLAZZOSloan Valve Co.Wed Apr 01 1992 11:356

    	Yep. Where I fish is in Hudson (behind Lake Boone). There may be
    	a dramatic improvement, but its still a sewer.

      The area around Northboro and Berlin is a little cleaner than Hudson,
    but still nothing to write home about. Might be fun to fish as catch
    and release. I certainly woundn't eat anything out of there...not worth
    the chance you would be taking.
      Didn't they stop stocking some years back only because the PH levels
    had gone out of limits needed for Trout? While I'm asking questions,
    where can I get a listing of all stocked Mass. streams and lakes?

 I've not done it in several years but a call to these folks used to
 get me the annual stocking list for the state.

145.15If you catch and release, its a nice place to fish.GNPIKE::NICOLAZZOSloan Valve Co.Thu Apr 02 1992 12:3210
    I should point out that the bass fishing in the river is pretty good.

    I love drifting with the current on a windless spring morning casting
    to the weeds along the banks - theres some good fish in there!

    I sometimes think that the pollution is the only thing that has saved
    the river from overuse - I can usually fish for hours without
    encountering another boat.

    I've mentioned in here many times that yes indeed it is a nice place to
    fish. As was noted in the above note, very few fisherpersons fish the
    river and since its very slow moving you can drift easyly from spot to
    spot. The river has plenty of Bass and to many Pickeral!
